In a quiet, isolated village in the Eastern Cape, nurses prepare for the day shift at a local clinic. Tholeni near Gcuwa in the Eastern Cape is one of the most impoverished villages in the area - unemployment is high and most families rely on grants for survival. But last year, even the government-sponsored social relief and food parcels couldn’t save seven children from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). The children died within three months of each other. Theirs are the tragic faces of an under-reported and existential crisis in the country’s poorest regions: kwashiorkor, a painful condition often affecting children starved of proper nutrition. In South Africa, among the two wealthiest countries on the continent, around 15 000 children required hospitalisation because of the condition. It’s a crisis of hunger that’s spread throughout the country and government seems powerless to respond. Carte Blanche investigates.

Sux to know,it's sad that in other countries like NZ you can go on a dole and they will help you buy a washing machine or vacuum cleaner, that is what taxes are used for. Govt should do more as that is what taxes should be used for. If a country of 5 million like NZ can do it,then a country of 60 million can do better.

I removed my lawn and planted a garden to feed my self. I have 3 hens for eggs. I have 3 female and 1 male rabbit to feed my self. The rabbits have between 4 to 9 babies. I let the male visit one female once a month. I never go hungry. I planted 200 banana plants, 200 patata plants, 200 amadumbe plants, 200 cassava plants, 2 passion frute vines, 2 grinadella vines, 4 pawpaw trees, small vegtable pach with green beens, carrots, spinich and beetroot. I have one peach tree. Then i also have 3 bee hives and a sall pach of shugar cane. My house is small and my land is 40x40 metres including my house, rainwater tanks and chicken run and rabetery. I have some solar power. I am now turning 76 years old and i still can survive living and working alone.

@@bozzibozziana5366 I think you take for granted that everyone thinks on the same level. During apartheid all our vegetables came from our garden. We also had a few fruit trees that our vegetables were grown around. I had my own little patch that I tended. All we did once a month was buy our dry staples. I can tell you that most of our neighbours did not do the same. Whenever our garden yielded more than we could consume (like potatoes, tomatoes and mielies) we shared these with our neighbour's. My father was forthright to the point of rudeness. He asked our neighbour's why they did not plant. All he got were excuses. Fortunately back then, everyone was working and no one was starving. Today when I go back home, most people are unemployed and they are making more of an effort at growing their own food gardens. It's been over 20 years since my father has passed but they all say that they learnt from him.
Perhaps we should get Afriforum to help these areas and teach them to plant, how to use save seeds from the current crops for replanting and how to harvest and store water. There's no point in berating people without teaching them. We therefore step in and help by whatever means we are able to.

@@bozzibozziana5366 Further to my comment above, it is ludicrous that you even attempt to absolve the ANC of their responsibility after 30 years of failures. They've killed our economy, driven away most of the investment which has resulted in the hunger problems our country faces. It's therefore disingenuous of you to accuse the creators of this piece that is highlighting a gross failure by government which is not only hurting but killing our people. Sadly, you miss the mark. Had government not interfered with their reverse racist laws, our country would be prosperous. It would have surpassed its potential. We would not have children dying of starvation. This should wound you deeply. It bothers me that it doesn't. It shows a complete lack of humanity and empathy.

People took to the streets waving pro Palestine flags and anti Israel flags. Apparently we as South Africans had to give our 2 bits worth regarding these matters. But, at home, for our fellow South Africans, we have no voice. Ramaphosa, was on TV standing in solidarity with Palestine but his very own people are dying of starvation. As hard as it is to say this, the truth is that the ANC government wants and needs people to be dependent on them. That is why they have ruined the education system so that people do not think for themselves anymore. The ANC thinks it is an achievement to have 27.3 mil + people on grants. It is a way for them to secure their vote. If people fear losing their grants they will keep voting ANC. Instead of teaching people new skills and empowering them so that they can look after themselves. But this causes people not to be dependent on the sate anymore and as they become more aware of what is going on they will see the African National Criminal organization for what they truly are.

There is no government that despises its own people more than the ANC. So many of the problems we confront in this country are the result of the state of our economy, and our leaders have repeatedly demonstrated that they are uninterested in establishing a safer and more stable environment in which their citizens can thrive. I agree with the assertion that "we can't waste time looking at what government does or doesn't do," but we can't ignore the fact that proper governance is critical to the development of a nation.

We need better long-term solutions. These villages need to learn how to farm, and self sustain themselves, and provide an income for their community. The child grant is also a mess. Too many children are being born, just for the purpose of acquiring a child grant. This is crippling the system and overwhelming the aid. 13 million children are on child grants. That is a ridiculous number. We need to educate our poor. This is so sad. I hope these children find a miracle, they came into this world fighting. They deserve a chance, but we need to be realistic about how we can create sustainable communities. These children are not only in need of food,... but also education, otherwise, we are setting them up for a worse fate than their parents.

If a proper supplier with the proper logistics were selected this would not have happened. But as always the choice was probably based on BEEE status and nothing else. I know what I am talking about - I have 5 black foster children in my household who have no contributing fathers - in fact they were abused and handed into my care by social services. This broke my heart, sad that our government lets this happen. Gift of the givers are awesome, I will definitely donate to them.
