  • Welcome to the World Athletics Watch Party, join the conversation on Twitter with our hashtag #WatchWorldAthletics.
    22-year-old Donavan Brazier earned his first major 800m title in a time of 1:42.34 - breaking the 32-year-old Championship and 34-year-old United States records. He also became the first US 800m runner - male or female - to win the world title.
    After the field had reached the bell in 48.96, led through by Puerto Rico’s habitual front-runner Wesley Vazquez, Brazier moved decisively to the front halfway down the back straight and simply maintained his form all the way to the line to confirm his status as the favourite in the event.

      Joku heppu that’s the wrong assessment. If you know you don’t have the same 200m speed as the top three in the field then taking it out in the lead is the way to go. Vasquez May have ended up bottom 2 instead of top 5. And if he’s lucky top three

    It's just crazy to me that these guys can run 23.5 in the first 200 meters, and it doesn't even feel that fast for them. I coach at a smaller high school in Wisconsin. And granted, yes it's only the small school division in a single high school state, but still- 23.5 in my area for a high school boy would almost get you to the State Meet...and these guys are just loping at 23.5 pace.

    The 800m sucks. That's what makes it the best race. You go out in the first 200 and you say in your mind "I can't maintain this pace" and then the whole race is just saying "I'll relax in a second, I'll relax in a second, I'll relax in a second, I'll relax in a second".... and maintaining that pace. That's the 800m in a nutshell. Sure, there is a tiny bit of strategy as in "Don't go out as fast as Vasquez" but honestly, that's about it.

      And that was also the fasted 800m ever run. By comparison, Brazier was by himself here for the last 300m. A little different when someone is pushing you. Brazier coasted the last few strides not that he would have equaled the 2012 time.

    • @reeepingk
      @reeepingk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Track position. Honestly getting "trapped" behind and beside someone is a TERRIBLE place to be in one of these races. Every coach stresses "don't get boxed in" "don't get boxed in"... and also "don't get trapped way out in lane 3." The result of this is the fight for track position you see at that time. Cut across early and you get ahead of people and also get the inside line. In front and inside is the best place to be. Don't have to worry about running into someone, about getting spiked, about falls, just clear track ahead of you. If you take the optimum line you'll likely end up on the very outside in lane 3 somewhere, which results in n non-optimal turn.

    Sod pronunciations. By the way, there isn't a definitive - global - way to pronounce anything! For example, MOST of world can't seem to pronounce Paris ( as the French do ) correctly! BTW, Jenny is one of the best commentators you will ever find!

      I'm eagerly awaiting that. His 1500m speed is crazy right now. If he can have someone (Maybe Rudisha) Push the pace in the olympics next year, he could totally break 1:42. When he's older. I'll be expecting him to seriously threaten the WR, if not break it. Can't wait.

    He needs more plyometrics, hills and weights on his legs. Looks weak - Donovan could run sub 1.41 if he got stronger
