These are my tips as somebody who went 1:51 in 4th grade. (Obviously im kidding -- in 12th grade and go 1:56.) Ok -- think about the race as a 4x200m. So, first 200 meters: Get out strong. At the 200m mark, you should be feeling good. If you are already tired after 200m, slow it down a little. Like you should be pushing it, but you shouldn't feel yourself getting drained. 200-400: Maintain. Keep the pace going. At the 400 mark you are gonna start feeling tired -- thats fine. That's good. You are getting ready for the step for 400-600 -- push it. Push. That. Shit. You need to feel like you are speeding up, BUT STAY CONTROLLED. DO NOT SPRINT. DO. NOT. SPRINT. DON'T DO IT. Start to use your arms a little bit more and start to get into a rhythm. This is by far the most important part of the race. No doubt about it. No hate, but anybody who says something else is wrong. This is the part of the race where, if you got out too slow, you pick it up. If you got out too fast, you try your god-damned best to keep that pace going. Remember, you will naturally slow down at this part of the race, so you have to feel like you are speeding up just to stay anywhere near your previous pace. (There is a reason why this is the most painful race in T&F.) Ok, now, time for the hardest part. 600-800. I have to split this into two more parts. Sorry, I know I'm breaking my own rules. Ok, 600-700: Pick it up even more. Don't sprint yet, but you should be feeling like you are like 80% of a full sprint. Your arms should be pumping, high cadence (meaning fast legs), pretty much getting ready for 700-800, where you: Send it. Just send it. This is it. There is nothing to wait for now. Just go for it. If you die, you die. Just fucking go for it. Balls to the wall. This. Is. Fucking. It. You should either be sprinting or on the fucking ground by now. No matter how tired you are, no matter what happened 700 meters ago, this is it. Go for it. Ok, that's all I got for how to run the 800. Now just a few things to not worry about: 1) Don't overthink it. These are just some guidelines that are helpful for me, but if something else works for you, do that. 2) Don't worry about heel/toe striking. I heel strike and I got to state finals, so really, just do what is comfortable. 3) Don't think negative. Don't think "aaah i feel so tired," think "I only have one more minute to go." Think about the clout you will get when you're done with your race and you broke two.

This dude is the definition of hard work. No special gift for the 8 since he ran 1:57 in highschool (while Rudishas first 800 ever was 1:50), just an athlete who knows how to train and put 100%.
Today I ran a 3 sets of 800. And it took me 2.58, 2.59, 3.5 sec. Got really exausted in the end. I am an average runner and your video helps me to motivate myself more. Thank you pal. 👍
Very nice. The 800 was my event in Jr high and high school. Went from a high 2:20’s in 7th to a 2:15 (with no one pushing me.. usually won each race by 70+ yards) in 8th to a 2:07 in 9th and I didn’t break 2:10 my sophomore year. That’s around the time my knee started giving out (running on an asphalt track really sucks), so I gave up track to focus on basketball and to not completely ruin my knee before high school was over. I have great respect for anyone that can or has gone sub 2, it’s definitely not easy to do. I always wondered what I might have been able to do had I just focused on track and my joints stayed healthy.
Nice tip! And the big bonus is you went out and did it. I think I want to give the 800m another shot this spring. Only ran it once last year while prepping for my first sub 5 mile race as a 30+ year old. Went out a bit too hard and had about 4s differential and ran 2:20. It’s 5k time now so lots of time to think about it and keep this tip tucked away. Thanks for the awesome content!
This video was so satisfying to watch! Predicting each 200m split and then running it was simply amazing. I could probably hit each 200 split within a second for the first lap but after 600m predictions go out the window.
i know its a struggle, in 7th grade i was getting 2:40s then my 8th grade year ended because covid, so this year i was kinda cocky and felt like a god before and got like a 3:55 because i wasnt training well. That humbled me and im training better now and have already cut like a minute off of that lmao
Very happy to see Nick still there. I remember that iconic race. In my mind the greatest race of all time. Nick came out of nowhere in that last 200m. 🙌🙌
I feel like the differential should be slightly different depending on your ability. If you run a 1:40-1:41, 2 seconds is 2% of your race, but running 2:20+ means your differential would get over 3 seconds if you want to keep the percentage the same

I ran a 1:04 400 a couple days ago. I had more in me so I think I can get a sub 2:10 if I try hard enough at my meet on Saturday. I’m in the 4 x 8 relay.
I set out this goal to run a sub 2 800 two days ago. Did 4x200 tempos the last two days. Have zero endurance but I know I’ll get that back soon. It’s been 6 years since I ran track and my high school pr was 2:07 lol, but I know I can get this, all I have to do is the work
Hi! Great video! Question please.. my daughter 15 is an 800m runner at 2:17 , first lap at 67 seconds and second at 70, what lap should she aim to improve? And any tips? Thanks
From a coach’s perspective, what is a good training plan for 800m runners who are close to breaking 2:00 in high school? What are some good track workouts and the amount of weekly miles? As well as some strength exercises.
I'm a ninth grader my pr in 8th grade was a 2:17 I'm not going to sit here and brag but or say I'm the best but I am well versed in effective workouts If you have an indoor track facility near by that is a big recommend But for my workouts I prefer 3 long runs a week with 4x200 when I'm done at max effort and 4xmini hurdles or highknees Now interval work is big during the first part of your season run minutes with your main set up to 5x3 minutes with 1:30 recovery for an 800 this is great but sprinkle in some 1 and 2 minute intervals too now when it is about 2 meets into the season start doing ladders so do 2 4 6 6 8 8 6 4 2 with half or less recovery hope that helps good luck on your goal I'm shooting for 2:05 this year so I'm in your shoes
For a fitness test I do in the military, I have to run 880 yds, do you think your workouts would help me get my time down as well? Not as fast as I was in high school lol
+2 seconds is a good thing and the best way to run the 8 for most runners but it is not a necessary requirement to run a good race. Sometimes you got to go with the pack. Some people may be better at running +3 even +4 (more sprinter type guys) and some will run to close to even splits (distance guys) all you got to do is go out fast with the pack and hey if you’re 1 or 2sec faster than goal pace at the bell go for it!! Just race the people you are with! (You may just finish your last 200 in a very slow and painful way but still gonna run a good time. At U20 PanAms they went out in 51 and 4 or 5 guys ended up breaking 1:50. Keep going hard till 600 and let the last 2 take care of itself
100% agree that one should focus on competing first and foremost. But what if there is no pack? In a time trial you are out there by yourself. There was no pack at the 2012 Olympic Games and if I had gone out with Rudisha I prob would not have finished the race. Compete, but run within your own limits at the same time.
damn, that's more than perfect planning! I am in awe!!! I plan to run 2:30, with 1:14 in 1st lap, and 1:16 in 2nd lap. But instead, I got 1:25 in 1st lap, 1:45 in 2nd lap, for total of 3:10

It’s 5k time now so lots of time to think about it and keep this tip tucked away. Thanks for the awesome content!
cross country season coming to an end so hyped for track season!!!
It’s great how he’s still running, even when retired
My best is only a 2:22 but then again when I tell my coach I wanna run distance they put me in the 800 😂
running my first 800 this wednesday for high school track ! super nervous but this helped get those nerves away :)
Yeah it does
How’d it go?
@@TheeJanaeTV it’s been 3 years she don’t care 😂
@@Luvhoopinn well after four mabey she does!
@@jimhorton1271 Its 4 already
This video was so satisfying to watch!
Predicting each 200m split and then running it was simply amazing. I could probably hit each 200 split within a second for the first lap but after 600m predictions go out the window.
takes years of practice for sure!!
Everyone’s talking about breaking two while I’m out here and I haven’t broken 3😂😂
My best is 2:46 and I'm 16 in year 11. Running against other schools in 2 days😪
@@generald5036 you can definitely get that down to a 2:20 bro.
i know its a struggle, in 7th grade i was getting 2:40s then my 8th grade year ended because covid, so this year i was kinda cocky and felt like a god before and got like a 3:55 because i wasnt training well. That humbled me and im training better now and have already cut like a minute off of that lmao
Very happy to see Nick still there. I remember that iconic race. In my mind the greatest race of all time. Nick came out of nowhere in that last 200m. 🙌🙌
My best is 2:05...
On 600 meters ;-;
I just did 1 min 59 sec today! How old are you
@@shivangshusarma1840 I'm a long-distance and tried the 600m, I finish in 1:52.
@@felipebanuelos1143 Man, that's awesome. Sad to say tho, I'll be breaking it soon. Next time I'll try for 1:30
I run 1:28 in the 600 and I'm 14 years old. Looking to run sub 2 in the 800.
Techmo 90 omg that’s fast our country record in your age is 1.35 for girls . We don’t have that for boys.
Want to run a PB today in little athletics and this video came out 👍
I feel like the differential should be slightly different depending on your ability. If you run a 1:40-1:41, 2 seconds is 2% of your race, but running 2:20+ means your differential would get over 3 seconds if you want to keep the percentage the same
very good point! certainly something to consider
I’m gonna make thousands of accounts to like this video cuz I really want to see you in Tokyo !!
haha! share the vid with your friends might be easier
Nick Symmonds I got this! Thank you for reply I really like your videos! keep up the good work ; )
Lol Nick just burned you. ; ) Jks jks
Reg Dunn I guess I need some cool-down xD
Notch
This video would have been so helpful 3 years ago I never knew how to pace it cause I mainly ran the mile
My guy Nick still got it👌👌 getting better each and every week
Damn nice job, Nick!! Made that look easy.
didn't feel easy! Forgot how much the 800 hurts lol
i did 2:08 as a 16 yo ... now at 42 i wanna know as fast i can do it ... love your vids Nick, very pure and human .
So what's your time now?
I was talking about this earlier at a track meet and this was on my recommended
Wow that was super exciting. You are as solid on a track as you are with a camera. Great vibes.
I run a variety of 400m, 600m and 800m and this video really helped!
Who else was watching this before your track meet and coach put you in the 4x8 even though you a distance runner 💀
A better title would be : How to ruin your lungs in 6 minutes
Why?
If you have asthma... You basically die when you do this
@@becca_flx_133 I have asthma and am training for a marathon. Get better meds.
@@matthewclark8931 i take meds every morning and every evening... I already had like 10 different meds. And it doesnt help but im happy that you can do that. Never give up!
@Ada-Iba Agbu I do that with my albuterol inhaler but even still I feel like the inhaler doesn't do much
I have a Track meet tmmr where I'm in the 4x8. I'm gonna use this tmmr.
Started running a month ago 8:42 mile..
25 days later I was at 6:30 mile
Going for 6:00 at day 45..
Did 3 800s yesterday 2:49,2:59,3:07
So I feel good aBout where I am at and where I am headed !!
where are you now?
Wow that’s great!!
Amazing job man! Really impressive to see how you knew exactly what you should be capable of so you made a plan and stuck do it and dayyyyum breaking 2, that’s impressive...
thank you Cody!!!
Nick you break 2 superb bro soo happy ATHLETE ASKING TO COACH= HOW TO BREAK 2 COACH SAY =DO PROPER PACING. BUT NICK SAY= DO WHAT I DO YOU PROMISE IT U DILIVER IT ........ SO HAPPY
Thanks, Nick! I was waiting for this video!
Its really weird to watch this having ran a cross country meet there only a couple weeks ago.
Love your videos from Seattle WA, thanks for the tips my next meet is in a week, doing a 800, will help me alot!
From spain, a 3000m athlete and with all my respect. When I see you warming up doing the technique exercises, its quite obvious that you were olympic. Poetry in movement but when you actually run, your arms...the way they move...looks very incorrect lets say for someone who has ran in 1'42" which is absolutely incredible btw
I am 35 inspired by your 800m I ran a 1:56 in high school won 🏆in Alaska and your doing basically my time at 37 I ran the track the other day at 35 and I felt so old my split at 400m was 1:07 I was running 56 splits and age does a number to the body good work bro I subscribed and love your videos
Buy an adrenaline+endorphin pack in the black market.
Im amazed at the accuracy of your splits and pacing... great channel btw. subscribed
Thank you!!!
He needs 5000 likes guys... you heard his coach! ;D XD
wow. you paced that perfectly and just how you said you would before you started!
Im so scared i have my first 800 tmr and i am so scared of failing
Oh here it's me having that tmrw for the first time
I AM EXCITED TO SEE THE NEXT VIDEO WITH YOUR DIFFERENT SECRETES TO A TACTICAL 800M RACE !!!
I ran 800 metres without stopping and it was at a steady jog and almost threw tf up. I am hella unfit.
That was amazing.. Seriously. He ran a 2:10 or something above that against that high school team not too long ago. And with a plan, dropped ten seconds. He can't be in that much better shape that quickly.
Nevermind this is two years ago
Me trying to get running tips but not knowing any of the terms
Naim Dawson lol
I ran a 1:04 400 a couple days ago. I had more in me so I think I can get a sub 2:10 if I try hard enough at my meet on Saturday. I’m in the 4 x 8 relay.
The reason why im watching this cos at my athletics im doing 800m so i can finish 1 place
Nice bro i'll try that 2 Seconds Strategie next time in run , good Video btw
Instructions unclear: i tried running an 800 and ended up in another country
Tips plz?
try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth it will help
you must be on the border?
I set out this goal to run a sub 2 800 two days ago. Did 4x200 tempos the last two days. Have zero endurance but I know I’ll get that back soon. It’s been 6 years since I ran track and my high school pr was 2:07 lol, but I know I can get this, all I have to do is the work
hard work will give you the best chance possible! Love that you are setting new goals.
Sick man to hit exacly what you say each 200 that's really good and still sub2min shape probz to you gonna try to hit that time aswell in 2020.
Hi! Great video!
Question please.. my daughter 15 is an 800m runner at 2:17 , first lap at 67 seconds and second at 70, what lap should she aim to improve? And any tips? Thanks
This stuff about splits is mentaly complicated. I never was able to maintain even pace. :)
From a coach’s perspective, what is a good training plan for 800m runners who are close to breaking 2:00 in high school? What are some good track workouts and the amount of weekly miles? As well as some strength exercises.
I'm a ninth grader my pr in 8th grade was a 2:17 I'm not going to sit here and brag but or say I'm the best but I am well versed in effective workouts
If you have an indoor track facility near by that is a big recommend
But for my workouts I prefer 3 long runs a week with 4x200 when I'm done at max effort and 4xmini hurdles or highknees
Now interval work is big during the first part of your season run minutes with your main set up to 5x3 minutes with 1:30 recovery for an 800 this is great but sprinkle in some 1 and 2 minute intervals too now when it is about 2 meets into the season start doing ladders so do 2 4 6 6 8 8 6 4 2 with half or less recovery hope that helps good luck on your goal I'm shooting for 2:05 this year so I'm in your shoes
Hmmm..so i ran a pb of 1.52 with a 53 first lap..🤔🤔
How bad is that? 😂
not bad, it just tells me that with better pacing you can probably run a lot faster
You could probably do 1:49/1:50 with better pacing
atlethics RO you can slow down to about a 54.5, 56.5, that will give you a 1:51. 54 and 56 give you 1:50 try slowing down just a tad
Boss man no, it was a 53-59
Boss man I think you mean 6 seconds faster on his first lap. Try reworking your addition there.
LMAO speaking of splits, at my first track meet, I ran 1:23 for the first lap, then 1:33 for the second. Still a little embarrassed about that.
For a fitness test I do in the military, I have to run 880 yds, do you think your workouts would help me get my time down as well? Not as fast as I was in high school lol
I have no idea why some people dislike that amazing 800m run, love it 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏🐅🐅🐅👏👏thank you Sir
I want to see him in Tokyo
I tried this and it definitely paid off!!! Wasn’t quite 2 seconds(+3 second differential)
2:11 with 64, 67 splits
Come on guys, 2 more thousand likes to go.
Nick Symmonds 🙌
We have the 5000 likes. sooooooo start training nick😉
damn, that's more than perfect planning! I am in awe!!! I plan to run 2:30, with 1:14 in 1st lap, and 1:16 in 2nd lap. But instead, I got 1:25 in 1st lap, 1:45 in 2nd lap, for total of 3:10
lol
i did 515 meters in 2 mins without training or any sport activity
ImNotLonelyAtAll well he tried and didn’t do any training so i’d call it somewhat decent
I am big fan of you when i saw your final sprints on your US championship. I love that race😊
Thank you!!
How i run 2:10 in my school tournament any trick
go out in 64, come back in 66
Listen to sidhu moosewala's song ......bro beileve me it's a pro tip...🤣🤣
Bro 2:21 my personal best
I remember puking after every 800 meter race. I went from 2:30 in grade 9, to about 2:08 in grade 12. I loved the 800, and hated it so much!
Cool down time!!!
You make running a 400 in under a minute look so easy.
