    They finally posted an opening here at the terminal close to my house. Fingers crossed I'll get to go back.

      hey donald, was this opening in your seniority district when you worked there originally?
      So a guy wants to work in "terminal A". but there are no openings. So, he hires on in "terminal D", to get his foot in the door and eventually inch his way to "terminal A". I would say use CAUTION when doing that.
      A good question to ask for a new hire PRIOR to accepting a railroad job offer, in this case, is to find out IF "terminal A" and "terminal D" are in the ***SAME SENIORITY DISTRICT***. If they are then you're good.
      If NOT then use caution. It's common to have separate seniority districts and it's pretty much a steel wall. Meaning you cannot cross over between districts. Now sometimes the company will ask for folks to transfer to a district from another district. If that happens then you're good. But that may be the only way a person can get to another district, in some cases.
      A place that has systemwide seniority eliminates this problem. But i'm not so certain that there is a class 1 with systemwide seniority.

      @@25mfd This was actually the problem that lead to me leaving before. I hired on at a terminal that I didn't want to stay at permanently, but figured since it and the terminal I wanted to ultimately end up at were in the same division and trains regularly ran between the locations, I'd be able to eventually get on a pool going back closer to home, or I'd be able to transfer when there was a spot available at the location I wanted to go to. These locations aren't in the same district, so it wasn't going to work out for me. I was having to make the choice to either pay to stay somewhere close to my yard and not be around to help my elderly parents while off on my rest, or driving 2 hours back to my house, sleep, and then constantly check the board so I could pack up and start driving once I was 2nd out so I wouldn't be late when I got my call.
      The job I put in for is at the exact location I need to be based out of. It's only 30 minutes from the house, so I can be around while I'm taking my rest and waiting for a call. I was told its not a great location in terms of job security, as they shut the hump down there in 2017 and don't do classification there anymore. Its basically just a storage yard now, and an oversized crew change point with 2 locals left. I'm not worried about getting furloughed though because I have a CDL and 6 years of large straight truck experience, so It wouldn't be hard for me to find a decent paying job in my area to tie me over while laid off.

      Videos coming on this but there are several things to watch on the channel. How to read switches, track authorizes would be good to know even if you don’t use them, how to uncouple and couple railcars. More videos on this as I plan to break out the rule book and break down some of the things you will go over in training.

    Is it worth getting into railroading later in life, 39-40 ish years old? Finishing 20 years of aircraft maintenance, retiring from military, looking at what I want to do next

    I do not think an AI could ever fully replace an experienced operator. I can tell if a railcar will have wheel slip before the alarm goes off. If I drive through a station and I see someone standing on the end of a platform crying you can bet i am calling that in. I will use the horn around certain areas because I know there a high risk of pedestrians making unsafe crossings. I have saved lives with my horn. I cannot see an AI doing all that. AI may work in a closed off tube network but not in an open suburban network.

      I think ai will definitely replace subway driver's but when we go to the more complex train terain the tram driver's drive in I don't think it's possible to replace yet

    I’m from the Track Maintenance and the Bridges and Buildings/Structures side. I can’t see trains ever FULLY being computerized, but the human labouring aspect for the track and structures will always be there. Same with the mechanical, maybe rail car mechanics and the Diesel Mechanics will have to adjust in the future to more electronics like our vehicle mechanics but, for the whole industry, railroads will always need people power.

    I agree with this instance of AI, but one thing is overlooked. These AI generators are only searching a pool of information and putting it into paragraph format. However, there is still no reason to take conductors off of trains.

    I doubt fully automated will be a thing. I would love to see AI find the big yellow wrench that you use to change an air hose. Would also love to see it change a knuckle. Dropped one them bad boys on my tootsies. Mother of god that got me dancing and cursing. Drop one on the arch of your foot when it’s raining out. You will hit those high notes.

    Allen Shaw has been a complete letdown. The expectations were high for him, but he has completely let us down at NS. One thing I have learned about working on the railroad is logic goes completely out of the window.

    • @Railroad_Talk
      @Railroad_Talk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know some AI can develop common sense so I have read I honestly have no idea lol, but I think where it lacks most is vision and feel. I think it will become an industry standard in the mechanical world first as a trouble shooter for PLCS and software issues in large factory’s and warehouses, steel mills. Me and my boss talk about this often and how we can use this technology to help aid our jobs but not replace it lol. Fine line there

    The future for AI may be similar to ATP. If you are doing everything right ATP will not bother you but the moment you are not ATP will warn/intervene. I can see a benefit of having an AI running in the background and only intervening when human error/emergency has occurred. If the AI worked just like ATP I would have no problem with it. AI could mean the end of SPADs on the worlds railways.

    Keep in mind AI is already a factor within the railroads. See the new implantation of TO (technically AI) as well as the new dispatching “tool” of Movement Planner…

    • @True_NOON
      @True_NOON ปีที่แล้ว

      And TO is barely doing TO , since it either saves fuel via slowing the train to a crawl, and/or just derailing it, outright with stringlining
