- So you're thinking about working for the railroad and becoming a freight conductor? Today I am going to share 5 things you should consider before working for the railroad. It's not all sunshine and rainbows and it can take a toll on your mental health and family if you're not prepared. Have conversations with your family and make sure this is the right choice before taking the leap. Going on 16 years with csx, hired on when I was 22. Went to engineer school 10 years ago and I’ve been working back and forth between conductor and engineer since. I have good seniority as a conductor but not so much as an engineer. Every Thursday afternoon when the “bids” come out for the following week I find out what I’m working that next week. If you’re not able to adjust to change on a regular basis throughout your career the railroad isn’t for you
Would you choose Amtrak over freight?
@@Wbaez0797 As an Amtrak conductor the physical work is easier and you’re not in the elements near as much. As a freight conductor pay is better and you don’t have to deal with drunk or unruly passengers. As far as routine Amtrak would be more consistent, but maybe more time away from home depending on where you work
‘Quality of life,’ and what does this mean to you? Consider this; you can’t have pets, can’t go to a movie theater unless you’re prepared to leave immediately and be at the depot in under two-hours. You cannot venture out beyond the limits that allow you to return to work or face being pulled ‘out of service.’ If ‘quality of life’ means drunken partying and clubbing, or weekends camping, forget it, it will crush your soul. Conversely, if like myself, you can do without large groups of people, crowds, chaos and concrete, then you’ve found your calling and it can take you to a peaceful and prosperous place…
Don’t forget that “seniority” can be 15+ years away in some terminals. And even then, you don’t know know your “set”schedule for more than a week at a time when you bid on your job.
You’re absolutely right. Somehow I managed to hold a local for almost 3 months lol. After that I just went back to the extraboard
Been on the railroad about a year and a half now, Being on call is definitely the biggest change in life 100% never knowing when your coming or going. Holidays are nonexistent. Can barely ever plan anything with friends or family and if so it's very last minute on your part. If i had kids i probably would not have stayed, i can't imagine having a small child and missing all of the big steps my child/children would make while im out on the road. Im happy Where i am don't plan on going anywhere, It's definitely not a job for everyone, people should do their research before hand for sure.
Remember this: Railroading is a LIFESTYLE! Not a job
Just like trucking, trucking is more flexible. Definitely a lifestyle not a job.
I started 6 years ago as a hostler with plans to move up, either be a conductor or machinist. But after seeing the hours and how long youre away from home i decided against it. Obviously its more money but I’m having so much fun doing what I’m doing, i work 8 hours and go home. Great exercise but yeah working outside can suck sometimes. Road crew type job seems like a perfect job for someone in their 20s who is single and just has a apartment or still lives with their parents. No worries then

Working on a rail gang and got cut off a few weeks ago. Did a massive cut and slide project. Finished up in Whigum, GA. Heat index was around 115 degrees. Weather is miserable.
I was marked up a week and bid on a job and got it. More than likely nobody wanted due to the off days and we have to shuttle cars to a different railroad, but it’s not bad plus I haven’t gotten rolled yet. By the time PWS hits for conductors seniority is really going to be king at that point.

Do your research and make sure you and your family are on board. Also be careful just because you apply for one city and get the job doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll work there or “hold”. I got lucky to hold my home terminal for my first 6 months marked up and now forced; I’m chasing my seniority meaning I have to work away from home until a spot opens back up.

I had a question regarding the furloughs, if I may ask. Is there a certain number of years of service, after which you kind of become "practically immune" to furloughs?
The reasoning I'm trying to analyze is: "If I am able to prioritize employment with the railroad, and find a way to stay afloat when furloughed - then after an X number of years, I can sleep in peace with a 97% certainty that I'll have the job tomorrow."
I'm ngl, I enjoyed working on the railroad. Despite me working On-Call, I loved what I did. I'm an ex UP Freight and Passenger Conductor and I missed railroading badly. I live near Chicago and barely any jobs are being posted by the Class 1s. Ik I can't go back to UP because of "personal reasons." But, it's great that I've got experience and I have an idea on where I should go for my railraod career. I think for me, it would be either go with Amtrak or Metra. Passenger service, I liked. Freight wasn't my best subject in my opinion. If I were to go to Freight, I would go with BNSF, CSXT, CN, or CPKC.
Just to recap, my list on what Joey talked about:
1. Did enjoy working On-Call, working in all wheather conditions, and being away from home a lot even if it means staying away from my siblings and my mom who drives me crazy a lot.
2. Didn't have to worry about furloughs. Thank god.
3. I did like the hours.
4. Ngl when I was a railroader, I was desperate to go to work badly since I did not enjoy being at home a lot.Of course, I do understand the FRA hours of service Law.
5. For anyone that wants to consider working for the railroad, give it a shot. Also, have an idea on what railroad you want to work for whether it 1-3 years with a Class 1, 2, or 3 and then go work a for a Class 1, 2, or 3 as in the rest of your life. My example: I worked for UP and my life long railroad career goal is to work for Amtrak, which I've been despritely trying since 2021.
I'm about to go to this interview with Metro North Commuter Railroad here in NY for Railcar maintenance. I've expressed that I don't mind the long hours and time away from home! I don't mind being on the extra board. And I don't mind the factors of being at the bottom, I plan to put time in!

LOL last big one furlough I work as trackman MOW I started in April 2023 and haven’t worked in 6 weeks and not even furloughed yet well not that I know of
i watched my kids grow up from the other end of the road.
19 hours is my longest day.
I have been soaking wet, had to ride a 2 mile shove in single digit degree weather, 90% of my callouts are usually between 1 AM and 3 AM. This job is not for everybody. if you don’t mind missing birthdays, anniversaries holidays then go ahead and apply for the job . 32 hours is the longest time I have spent in a hotel. And I missed Thanksgiving with my family.
Yeah, that’s a topic for another video. Only day I have seen them shutdown is Christmas and that’s only for 12-16 hours then it’s dead heads back to AFT and calls to head out of town.
@@Railroad_Talk this past Christmas they shutdown for 24 hours, 8pm Christmas Eve till 8pm Christmas Day. Then deadhead madness lol
30 is mine. Died in a siding waited for a train to come by for almost 9 hours. Then 9 hour deadhead on the second motor. Was the weather bad you ask? Nope, just NS not wanting to call a cab. At least I got to spend all that mandatory rest time at the away from home.
I always told guy's thinking about working for the rr to get up at 3am , drive a few hours go back home sleep and wake up and everyone else is at work.
I’ve been trucking for almost 45 years but I’m interested in all modes of transportation in general,with a particular interest in the folks who actually make the machines move. I’m hoping I can learn about life on the railroad.
Life for a railroader seem to go 1 or 2 ways.
A. Single. No kids. Too boring outside work because of how the schedule goes. Making enough money to support yourself with the mandatory bills and always have a penny to blow when attending retail therapy.
B. Middle aged. Married. Have kids. Theyre in school and play sports. Youre just part of that household to keep a roof over their head and barely even remember you have a family because youre always gone while theyre always at home or theyre always out to eat or going to see a movie while youre at home getting your few hours of undisturbed rest. Attend a gathering in the family for the holiday and you get called in before you even walk through the door or they attend it and have fun while youre outside working day or night, rain or shine.
Knowing this along with the fact I still want to be working on the rails is gonna be a mystery that haunts my mind for the rest of my life.
Seniority rules and most are on extra boards for years, so don't think you'll be on a regular schedule any time soon. Due to job cuts most places only have a handful of regular jobs, so the chances of holding a job with weekends off are slim to none!

Being in the military helped me out with this. I’m also a welder by trade to fall back on. I’d like to try being a conductor. I applied yesterday, I believe that they’re going to start hiring in January.

Hi do you know anything about the Louisville and Indiana railroad, and how they do things?
So not like being the conductor on the 1300 Poole to London Waterloo or the 1245 Cardiff Central to Nottingham?
In the UK, at least for main passenger there is no "on-call", instead there are "spares". Charter and freight may well be more like as you say.
There's good jobs in other crafts on the RR. I spent 38 years in the signal department. Retired at 60 and definitely would do it again

Furloughed for 3 years. Dec 08 to Dec 11, then 6 months in 16, then 2 month in 20.

Currently in trucking school with my CDL permit and CSX just emailed me for an interview. Reading all these comments got me iffy about the RR. My brother is in ATL training as we speak and loves it. The money sounds good. My kids are 12 and 13 and my wife has a good job. I’m just trying to figure out if I should try it. I will have my
CDL to fall back on. Every comment is discouraging. Is it really that bad? Dang! It seems like everyone hates their job! I’m interviewing virtually tonight.
The railroad is what you make it out to be. I loved my job but I also understood where everyone was coming from and still do when they tell you to run and never work there lol.
However, this is just my opinion.. how the trucking market is doing worries me and how the rail industry is doing looks promising. BUT that can change very quickly is the federal reserve start to cut interest rates soon. I still encourage people to try it and you have a solid plan B if it’s not for you
I just made 1 year with Union Pacific in January. I really like what i do and take pride in it. The road is where the money is but i choose the yard jobs because i can be home everyday. Not sure if the NS yards are the same but at UP we have certain call times for morning, afternoon, and night jobs. On the road you will be away from home a lot , but if your seniority permits you can work in yard and be home everyday.
I have an offer for UP in LA Grande/Nampa. Can you explain more please how the job has treated you? Things to learn? What to expect? Have you had more Good days/bad days? I'm single no kids so ill hit the road at 2am it's all good I'll try it out and see how it goes.

And they are constantly cutting yard jobs and making 2 people do what 5 or 6 used to do.

When I was a ct and doing ojt I was on a coal train that goes to a very remote place no van or cars could get to us we had to go light power as far as we could but no van could get to us the had to send a local crew to come get use by the time the local crew got to us it took an hour to get the air hose together there was so much snow built up on the plows I was on duty 20 hours that day after that I make sure I have atleast a days worth of food and change of clothes with me
Do you have to live where the RR youre gonna work for HQ located?
I have a serious question, I’m 26 I have to see a pain management doc due to having sciatica and some other back issues. I passed everything they didn’t say much of why I was disqualified can I reapply or will they tell me why I didn’t get the job? Im just trying to get some answers from someone, I already work a harder job then this so I’m just a little upset with the way they didn’t give me a chance. If anyone can respond to this that would be great, I have glasses and some pre-existing conditions and just not sure why they didn’t hire me. Maybe it’s because I’m prescribed opioids for pain issues but that’s just for maitenece of the problems.
Sounds like the RxR and the LTL Trucking freight industry have A lot in common long hours away from home strict rules on call 2 hour window random drug testing dangerous work enviroment You have to accept all weather conditions both trades great pay & benefits the nature of both trades have a lot of similarities you must be in excellent physical condition very mentally focused a lot of patience ability to follow instructions impeccably
Nailed it. I would be willing to bet being a truck driver is more dangerous than being a conductor / engineer solely because car traffic and how dangerous some of these drivers are.

How would you rank every class 1 railroad as far as pay and the chances of being furloughed
Currently work for csx (2 years) avgerage about 3k after taxes each pay check and havent been furloughed and no signs of being furloughed anytime soon as it seems they still have a lot of people curently training
Hallcon Drivers, are under the same working conditions.
Without a Basic Day claim,if we don't work we don't get paid.
During those times that you have to wait for a replacement crew and they end up taking a long time to get to you, what are you doing/able to do while waiting. I'm assuming they are still paying you, but are you able to take a book and read while waiting? I'd imagine they wouldn't like us to use our phones at any point while on the train. Depends on the carrier. From my understanding CSX has a zero phone policy as where NS you can use your phone as long as the straight is stopped. A lot of people read, nap, talk whatever to pass the time. I had pizza delivered to me one day 🤣.
CSX conductor here. As long as your train is not moving, you can be on your phone. I suggest purchasing a mophie to keep in your grip.
Q. What health concerns will cause someone to be dismissed?
I’m currently a paramedic and have worked in EMS for 7yrs. I’m in the midwest and have worked in every element imaginable. Anyways, I’m feeling like a change and my friend pointed me in the railroad direction. It seems like it would be a very interesting and rewarding career with great benefits and pay. I assume it would be smart to stay a paramedic part time due to the possibility of furlough?

Working on year 6 now, and I'm here to tell you, shortline life is way better. I started on a Class 3, and now I'm on a Class 2 till I retire. Yes the extra board is still on call, extra trains are still running, and dog catching still happens, plus all the shitty weather. However! For all the important stuff, its significantly better. I'm home every single night, and if I need a day off for anything, you get them no problem. Hotels? Basically never. The only time youd be in one here is when your first hire out to learn jobs at an away terminal. Long days, you bet. I've done plenty of those too, getting to the destination and waiting for a multi-hour long cab ride back home. Plus the pay is still good. Besides being in medicine, my railroad is still the best paying job around. Forget the misery of Class 1 life, and find a short line

My daughter is applying to NS for Mechanical Supervising training. This is so helpful. She is just graduating in industrial engineering. Wondering if this is a really bad idea.
I don’t have any experience being in a leadership role for a class 1 railroad. However I’m sure she will learn a lot and make good money doing it and with the experience she learns there could catapult her into something much bigger. I wish her the best!

I have herd a lot of people say it reminds them of the military lol. Most carriers love military guys due to them use to being gone away from family for the most part. Some people love and some people hate it lol.

They will call you again a few mins later. If you don’t answer the second time they will move on to the next conductor and you have to answer for what happened. Most of the time you’re wrote up unless you have a great excuse

Man it’s hard to tell, sometimes it’s only a few weeks and it could be a few months.. all railroaders have a saying.. “hurry up and wait” 🤣

Typically longer runs that locals but you’re basically going to service customers that are further than normal then you should come back home. Things could be different at your terminal this is just my guess lol

Hey Ed! We have strict discrimination laws here in the states. An employer cant turn you down due to you being from the UK. As long as your background is good and whatever else may be needed you should be good to go. If anything else is needed BN or UP will reach out by email more than likely requesting whatever it is they’re after. Welcome to the states! I wish you the best and always here if you have questions.
I wouldn't worry about it. Where I'm at we have a bunch vietnamese and Korean guys, few of them don't speak good English and they got hired. No idea if there's any kinda requirements like having to live in country so many years or anything.

You'll be ok. The class 1 I work for recently began hiring degenerates and felons because they're so desperate for conductors.
Is furlough common at priority locations? I start class next Monday in Georgia, and my home terminal will be Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Ms Stephanee Brown: Furlough can be a possibility. Our industry is one of feast or famine - in fact you can get a feel for how the economy is doing just by how much freight is moving on the rails.

If you’re switching or working in the yard. If you’re on the road then you don’t stop unless a tornado warning and it’s going to cross the tracks.
I have passed the background check and drug screening for CSX my projected start date was the 20th of this month. What I am asking is has anyone herd of them stopping training for the time being as they revamp there training procedures and processes?
You never know what they will.tell you. They will tell you anything.
I just figured because of the was 4 weeks training now switching to 5 weeks and the current accidents with the new conductors if they have stopped training for the time being.

So if you are laid off for 6 months or let’s say for a year, does that time not count towards retirement?
No. That's why you will hear a lot of old heads say 26-27 is a good time to hire in. Gives you time to be fired, or furloughed but still have your 30 years in by the time you're 60.
I’m a heavy haul trucker I’ve been thinking about getting on with the railroad as a conductor. I have a serious question do they discriminate against truck drivers and is their any rigorous test I have to go through. I’m 29 trying to do a career change with a little bit of leg room.
No not that I’m aware of, I never herd anyone say anything bad about truck drivers. You all do the same thing and that’s move freight and you can’t have one without the other. As far as test, you will have test and training. Rules test, signals test, hazmat test are a few. But the company’s set you up to pass by giving you all the info that’s on the test but you have to want it in order to pass.

How long does it usually take them to give you a start date? Im currently waiting on a start date now
Depends on the demand at your terminal from my understanding. I would say the average time is somewhere between 4-8 weeks for a start date.

@@KobiZyn looks like Valdosta is a smaller yard compared to Macon and Atlanta of course. But you never know they may need you pretty quick. I wish their system was better and gave you a start date when medical and all of that clears.
I’ve been contemplating getting my CDL or going to work on the railroad, but my parents keep pushing me to get my bachelor’s degree in a field I don’t really want to go into. I’m 19 years old not a huge build physically but I can lift certain stuff, would I fit better as a railroad conductor or truck driver? The home life stuff doesn’t affect me since I’m not in a relationship
Fit? I have a MBA and I work in the RR as a track dog. My MBA will get me 50k a year maybe and cost me 9 years to get while serving in the USMC. I make double that. We don't lift a whole lot anymore. Just remember we have machines we are not the machine. Don't limit yourself to conductor apply for everything they got. I have my CDL and I driving truck now sucks IMHO. Gov has way too many hands in it now. It may take a year or more to get hired. If your parents are footing the bill go to school while you apply.
But I am just a random guy on the internet. You have to do what is best for you..
I have my CDL and I’m actually on the road as I send this message. I have a degree in culinary arts, but I love traveling. I’m actually going to conductor training on the 5th of September, if I don’t like it, I still have my CDL and my degree. Nothing wrong with having contingencies.
Depends what you plan on doing. Both jobs can be pretty physical. If you're just hook and haul on the RR you should be fine, but you might not be suited to yard jobs or road switchers where you're throwing switches, aligning drawbars, and throwing on handbrakes all day (with the upside of sleeping in your own bed every night). Lot's of guys start training and they are in for a miserable awakening. The important thing is you can always improve, if you're lacking physically you can always get stronger.
My opinion, don't join the railroad until you're 25-30, you have to have worked there 30 years and be 60 years old to retire so I'd suggest learning work in other fields before dedicating so much time to the railroad
Does anyone have any leads to what railroad skilled trades lifestyles are like? Electricians, signal… etc. Seems like railroad life and in depth videos are mainly on conductors, engineers, or track guys. I hear a lot of the other maintenance guys are set hours and a very predictable work life balance. Any truth and leads to that?
Yes, from my understanding signal maintainers do work on call sometimes but you’re home everyday, company vehicle.

I can walk the ballast, I can lace air hoses, I can throw switches, I can set hand brakes, I can ride the cars, I can pass all the written tests, I don’t care about being on call, I don’t care about missing holidays. But, I gotta get through the damn hang test.😢 I’ve been hanging on a pull up bar to try to train for it, but when I’m hanging with one arm and swinging the lantern, after about a minute my arm starts to burn, and my legs start shaking. I lift weights, I’ve done back breaking manual labor for most of my life, so I can’t figure out why I have so much trouble with this thing. Maybe it’s all in my head because I’m so worried about it.😊

24 years seniority on UP. Dont do it. Find a decent other job with less pay and regular days and holidays off, and at least have a home life with your family.

My channel is focused on class 1s only because that’s what I have experienced personally. There are a lot of guys and girls on here that speak highly of their short lines and this video wasn’t meant to come off as me bashing any short lines.
