So, I was going to wait until Christmas to treat myself, then I saw the discount code and jumped in and bought this course. It's just so exciting to be getting started on a "real" painting! I am one of the people that have been wanting exactly this kind of instruction in a 'follow at your own pace' format. Thank you so much for offering this!!!
Did you draw the flowers with the pencil first, or how did you get the scetch of those flowers first before couring with acrylics. Beautiful, thank you.
Marianne, what happens if you do not prepare the canvas as you describe in your book? Is the gesso and sand papering worth the effort? Does it make the surface more smooth or less smooth? Thank you.
If you don’t do the gesso and the sanding, then the surface of the canvas will be much rougher and have something called tooth on it, which is just a bit of natural texture. I prefer for my brush to be able to glide smoothly across the canvas, so the sanding makes a significant difference. I also don’t like to paint on white surfaces anymore, because it impedes my ability to correctly read value. Compared to pure white, everything seems dark, but when you paint on a coloured surface, you’re able to much better see the highlights in the shadows. For me, this extra preparation is an invaluable part of the process, something that I would never skip. Everyone who I’ve taught who has started doing this absolutely loves it. It’s definitely worth it.
The colours used are titanium white, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, burnt umber, cadmium red medium, hansa yellow light, and quinacridone magenta. Happy painting!
