I can’t count how many times I stalled and started over on the painting I’m on (yes, flowers!) until I watched you explain and demonstrate working from value relations. Now almost done. “Better, faster” is real! Thank you.

Bonus tip: if you’re thinking about painting two peas, make it one instead. Nobody wants peepee on their wall. You’re welcome.

Your videos are so helpful! Their brevity forces you to get to the point and stick to it; to focus on one thing at a time; and they leave me feeling energized and ready to try what you just described. I just want to add an observation about photographs vs. painting from life, because you said you were having difficulty explaining the difference. Cameras can’t perceive the full range of values that we can see, they can record highlights and black out the shadows, or they can record detail in the shadows and white out the highlights. This is why photographers use light meters to figure out where they need to add lights so they don’t lose detail. Cameras also can’t see the range of colors we can perceive, so colors lose saturation and all of the little subtleties of warm and cool we can see. Painting from life will speed your progress faster.

This was a really good video. I use acrylics but I can use these tips. I’ve wanted to get more into Impressionism because I get so caught up on the details. I did that purposely at first because I wanted to make sure I could paint realism well so I could better know where and how to simplify shapes, lights and shadows, then transition into Impressionism.
Thank you for sharing these tips, they are going to greatly help me.

Interestingly, you have somehow drawn an abstract and very ancient flower vase. I think your creativity has contributed to a wonderful work, and your ingenuity has produced a work of art beyond all expectations.

i just don't know how much paint to put on... for example do i constantly use turpentine and linseed oil or do i not use that as much and how much is too much or too little?
Rose paintings are my favorite but i still at this age can't get it perfect or make it look perfect

    • @TessMArt
      @TessMArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hi, I understand how you feel. When I one the painting to last workable longer I use a mixture of oil medium and very little turpentine, and when I wish it to dry faster, I only use turpentine or any other fast drying medium. Say, if I intend to keep on painting on a painting day after day, I use the first, but if I wish to leave it aside and keep working on it only after the painting has dry up, like after every few days or weeks, I use the second mix.
By the way I mix three parts of oil with one part of turpentine, to keep deeping the brush in it before getting the paint.
And for the 'drying' mix I only use the turpentine to deep the brush in it. That and the self-oils of the paints are enough to be able to paint adequately.
Off course you can mix the paints with the mediums in the palette, but I usually only do this when the paints are very hard or I want them to be very smooth and soft, as when I want to paint grass strokes.
      Cheers and happy painting.

Hi Coach, is the same tips applicable to painting a vase of peonies (instead of three huge sunflower), I find that painting flowers is so challenging, bits of colour here and there and yet, the form still have to look right! Can you demonstrate how to paint a vase of smaller flowers💕- great tips as always!!!

I’ve been oil painting for 2 years and I’ve never heard of mixing my paint with paint thinner! I want to try it. Like gamsol? Just mix it with the paint on the palette? I’ve always just used liquin but it takes a bit to dry so usually have to wait a couple minutes to start painting over it.

This helps explain why flowers need to be different sizes. Look at a bouquet. Two flowers might be the exact same kind and identical in size laid down side by side. But in a vase one of them might be toward the back and one in front. The front flower needs to be larger because it might be bent toward you and is closer. The back flower has to be a bit smaller because it is farther away.

Question - I have the Artisan water mixable linseed oil - is this the same as any other bottle of linseed oil? I'm attempting to move to regular oils as opposed to water soluble oils and am wondering if this is right to use with the regular oils? Thank you!

I noticed that the paint brushes Chris recommends now are different than say a year ago. Now they are all long flats instead of the bigger ones being short flats. Im about to buy some, but am confused as to whether to go for all long flats across 0 2 4 6 8 sizes or not

I’ve been subscribing your channel for a while, your videos are really helpful. Thank you! And I’m wondering what photography books do you use for daily still life painting (like the photography in this video, it looks like from a book)? I can’t draw from real life everyday so I wish I could have a photography book that contains fruits, vases and flowers. Thank you!

You often say that it's easier to lighten a painting than to make it darker. Can you elaborate on that? I find that my darks absolutely dominate my light paints so I actually have trouble making things bright once I start adding in any darks at all. What makes it easier to lighten than darken?
