It's refreshing to find an artist who knows how to prepare her canvas properly and who knows her colours. Great tutorial. I'm still amazed at how you are able to paint such detail in these flowers using acrylics. I know you said it was about layers but I have gone over to oils because I became frustrated at mixing colours in acrylics and having them dry on me before I could use them.
I just realised that I meant to comment on a previous video with peonies. It changed before I realised what I was commenting on. It's probably the same anyway.
Thank you so much for this comment! You’re right, it’s totally the same for both 🥰 I always prep my canvases and you’re right, the dry time on acrylics can be frustrating. That’s why I find myself uncommitted and usually drift over to the oil side if I get the choice, but I do love the durability of acrylic and how easy it is to set up and teach with.
Thank you for telling us how long it took. One thing I get frustrated with is how long I realize I start to take on my paintings. When watching others on TH-cam it seems like only a matter of hours but when I heard you say two months it made me feel better because that's probably how long it would take me
I feel the same way! Sometimes I see other artists able to produce work at what seems like an incredibly fast pace, and admittedly I’m a little jealous. I know I’m a little on the slow side, but I enjoy the process and like to take my time to get things right. I’m hoping that as the years go on, I’ll continue to get more efficient, but for now, I’m content with my pace. I hope you are too!
I love watching your tutorials. I currently paint florals with watercolour which are much smaller scale. I want to give acrylics a try soon and find your subjects so inspiring.

Your Dahlia speaks of its’s majesty in such a delicate way.. I just love the large prospective of flowers in paintings… Your Dahlia is gorgeous! What brand of canvasses do you paint on for the best success? Is the coats of gesso and sanding the trick to getting better transitions of colour?
Using gesso and sanding between the coats eliminates a lot of the canvas tooth, which is the name of the texture of the canvas cloth. I notice a huge difference between painting on a sanded canvas and one straight out of the package. It helps with blending in the sense that there is less friction on the brush. However, I still find working quickly and with mediums achieves the best blends. I usually use Canadian or US made pre-stretched canvases on a gallery profile frame. They usually already come with a layer of gesso on it, but I still dutifully go through my process of using gesso and sandpaper each time.
@@MarianneVanderDussen Thank You Marianne for your reply… I too use Canadian canvases as I’m Canadian…lol I’ve never gessoed and then sanded them before though before painting, what grit. Umber of sandpaper do you use? I suppose you have a video, that I should watch, that answers these questions! Lol
Your art is very beautiful. One question: do you use matte medium for your first coat of paint and for the second coat do you continue using the same medium or do you use another medium?🥰
Hi! I usually just use the same medium throughout. You can also use gloss medium if you prefer! I like the matte because it helps me read my highlights better, but if you were working with darker colours I’d probably be more inclined to use a gloss since the matte has a subtle milkiness in it that allows it to dry with a flat finish. That could unintentionally dull your darks. Happy painting!
It comes with practice! Until then, don’t be afraid to try using a grid or a tracing so that you can build your confidence as a painter. Your drawing abilities will improve if you’re able to see how the image works through a contour line tracing.
Beautiful work Marianne. Do you find your paints dry out in your brushes when using multiple brushes? It is a common practice for oil painters to use different brushes for different colors, but wasn't sure how that would work out in acrylics. Thanks!
Fantastic question, Chris! They don’t tend to dry out, because I dip them in a little bit of medium when I’m not using them, and I lay them to rest on the wet palette, which seems to do the trick of keeping them moist enough not to dry out. The only time I’ve noticed they dry out is when I am keeping them in my left hand and swapping between them quickly. In that case, I always try and make sure that I dip the ones that I’m not using in a little bit of medium, if I’m lucky enough to remember. Sometimes I don’t, and then they have to go sit in the water for a bit, and they quickly snap back.
very beautiful works!!!😍😍 acrylic paints dry very quickly. How do you blend from dark to light on 2 layers? on me, they dry out and rather cover each other, rather than mix. Need more water?
So I actually barely use any water! What I find is that if I add two semi-transparent, thin layers on top of each other, they do actually achieve an optical blend, and my darks become much less streaky. I have plenty of paint mixed and switch between brushes, which I find helps with the blend, instead of dipping between two colours with the same brush. Let me know if that helps!
Do you recommend acrylic over oil painting for big flower canvases like these? I am a beginner and have so many questions. It’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed. I wish you offer in person classes 😊
Hi Lynn! So you can paint in oil over acrylic, but not the other way around. The reason for that is because of acrylic’s accelerated dry time, if you were to use oil as a base the painting would likely crack. However, you can comfortably layer on top of the acrylic, and I often do. I do have a 23 video lesson, 7 1/2 hour course available online that you can complete at your leisure, and that gives you direct access to our community where you can ask any question you want.
