I started painting about 5 years ago. I'm 57 years old. I've learned a lot by watching people paint on TH-cam. I struggle every time I paint, but I find the journey amazing. It's never too late to start something you love. And I didn't even know I loved to paint until now. Life has so many chapters!
That’s amazing! I always see people my age (20s) saying it’s too late for this or that, but it’s NEVER too late! I even get caught up telling myself that, but I’m inspired by you, and I wanna start new things too. Keep it up and I’m sure you’re bound to make masterpieces. :)
That's so cool! And you are totally right, its never late to do anything. We should remember that anything could happen to us, so we should do what we like now! Enjoying and finding something to be happy its never late ( ◜‿◝ )♡

Good on you, Carol. I'm 76 (today actually) and I started taking an interest some months ago when my older sister was recommended to do colouring for adults to help relieve anxiety. I thought it would be a nice hobby for me while sitting listening to music. But I'm finding I'm not interested in painting patterns, which is mostly what these books contain. Flowers, butterflies, trees, etc, are much more interesting as well as more challenging.
One of the things i've learned recently that i wish knew before starting to draw is to simplify everything. No matter how complicated a artpiece may look like, simplifying it into shapes makes it easier to draw and leave the details for later. It won't matter how detailed your artpiece is when the structure isn't right. Using references is not copying/cheating
#4, "Being an Artist is Hard", really is pretty much true about anything you learn. I think ego plays a part here, too (as you mention right at the end of this section), as people assume it's going to be amazing before they start working on a project because they're excited about it. But when it doesn't measure up to their initial expectations, they become overly critical about what they created. Once they step away from it and give it more thought, only then they realize that what they created is better than they thought. We tend to be our own worst critics.

@@manamemajeff6283 I think she meant not going top to bottom, left to right or vise versa while painting. But instead choosing particular individual parts to paint first.

I've been feeling stuck lately. Making art can be very isolating, which makes it that much easier for me to get in my head and in my own way. This video definitely helped me realize that it's something each artist goes through at different stages and to push through it. Thank you Alpay

Whenever i mess up a painting, i would be discouraged and told myself ‘no more painting’ but whenever i see videos like this, insipiration comes and i start painting and i mess up again...
I think majority of painting is messing up, that's how you learn. Don't get discouraged! Just keep messing up and eventually you'll start messing up less and less, and you'll be in a place where you like your art. Keep trying, it's worth it!

i heard a mangaka say that ur eyes should always be better than ur hand.
so, if ur eyes r better than ur hand, ur always gonna see urself as bad. since ur eyes r more skilled than what u can do. n they said, if ur art looks perfect, thats bad cuz then ur eyes stopped leveling up. u stopped skilling up.
i mean, take everything with a grain of salt but its an interesting idea.
@@sedaaykut3920 When we're painting we're actually experimenting. And mistakes will always be there when where doing experiment.
Just don't consider it a loss. And actually it's we all learn things. We just have to look why we messed up and try to fix it next time and so on. Have a good day!
Don't stop painting or creating...I know how you feel, all artists feel that way sometimes...maybe your creativity is better for another style of painting than the one you do...there are so many painting styles....explore what you can do and find the right direction of art for You : )

Yeah, I go back and forth on that. I'm interested in a lot of different types of art too, but I know some successful full-time artists who say you won't get anywhere if you're not focused.
I am the same.. I can’t help but experiment with new mediums and techniques… but it leaves my art with no niche
yeah same i've only ever heard the opposite like become really really good in your niche because if you try several things at once, you'll never be as good as someone who's specialised in that specific medium but thats good old perfectionism coming at me again:)and people arent just one sided,they have many faces:)
True! I always hear the advice of just focusing on one two, or maximum three things to get really good at; HOWEVER, i've noticed i actually get better at most things when i'm trying many different activities and have the ability to shift my focus into different activities and projects, because you learn a lot from the crossover and your body and mind benefit from the rest and the space you give to each project.
How to paint with a long brush like this? My hand and arm is too shaky. I have to get closer to the paper and support my hand??

no. 5 made me so happy, me being adhd has made me jump around on hobby fixations and I've always been told I won't be good enough at anything by being this way and it's so nice to hear someone say that it's a good thing to be because I've always felt that it's part of what makes me an artist

ADHD here as well, and I relate to that! I haven't even limited myself to just visual arts--I work as a professional photographer (15 years and counting), but I used to write a lot when I was younger, and I've also done some singing and acting, a bit of filmmaking, and now I want to learn to draw and paint. It actually took me a long time to even recognise myself as someone who IS an artist even as I dabbled in creative pursuits my entire life--hello impostor syndrome!--but I like to think that my range of experiences all inform each other and make me a better artist all around
I love how this wasn't just an artist's advice to better understanding of creative work but also a psychotherapy.

I needed this video. I’m 48 and almost an empty nester and trying to find more things to put my energy in. I have no idea what I’m doing so I just go from the heart. I appreciate you putting some thinking into the mindset of an artist especially for beginners like myself.

I so felt the power in being a jack of all trains. My safe place is in the kitchen and collecting cookbooks from around the world, but my other safe place is a soft music a glass of wine and coloring lifelike coloring books with pencils.
Becoming a teen parent put such a stifle on my creative side because I had so much on my plate that had nothing to do with learning who I was or my worth. But now my last of two is 14yro and I’m determined to find my voice in this world. Your video just confirmed that I can do all things, just stay humble and believe in yourself.

May I encourage you? As an illustrator and commercial artist. A. Find a community College or university campus where you can audit weekend life model classes. U just show up and draw and nobody criticizes your efforts . B. Keep watching tutorials on you tube. C. Retain an art instructor who's not mean or critical. Meet with her or him once a week just to monitor your progress. If it's in your soul to paint . Draw. Or express yourself thru photography. Please. Do so. Repress it not. And. In October 2023...have a one person ART SHOW entitled: " AIN'T NOBODY'S BUSINESS IF I DREW."... and find the joy of creating your own studio and show room. This is a very relatable video, and definitely highlights things I am working on, like getting attached to an art piece and thinking it defines who I am, then riding the emotional rollercoaster. I have been drawing since I was really young but have taken years off between drawing because I get SO upset because I compare myself to other people. It is nice to have this video as just one more reminder to not give up and remember it's okay to struggle and to hurt, that is part of the process. What matters is to keep going and try everything. Thank you for making this video!
Point 4 is so true, and definitely not talked about enough! As artists, you will go through many rough stages while working on your project. Then you will finish it, maybe admire it or despise it and feel empty in a way (In my experience) You will show it to someone, but that person will only see the FINISHED product. And not every emotion behind the artwork. They will give you a reaction and that's all. As a beginner artist it is hard to commit to another painting. You will doubt yourself, compare yourself to others... and the only solution is to try again, improve, learn, and be easy on yourself 🌱
This video helped me realize a lot of things. Thank you so much for making this.
One tip for people that I realized from this video is to just draw! Just paint! Just do whatever art form you do! Stop worrying over "perfecting your craft" or whatever. Let it develop over time. Yes, If you want to spend time practicing, do it! Just don't center yourself around improvement. Do what makes you happy! Sometimes that's all it takes.

Depends if you want to become a professional artist. You cannot just make art when you feel like it if it’s a career goal. Of course if you do it as a hobby then just do it for fun though.

Bruhhh, I felt so called out
It was trying to paint an impressionistic weeping willow tree in watercolour for 3 months and failing. That was my rollercoaster ride. Stopped me picking up a brush for 5 years. Then recently looked at my efforts 5 years later and realised i was nearly there. Im painting again now. His comment was so true.
Being the best you can be at different trades is key to well being. It’s the one thing I teach to my children as it is what can get you out of depressing moments. When you feel you suck in one thing you just go to your other things in life. They could be anything as you well said, and they don’t have to be directly related with creating, it could be physical training, riding your bike or cooking. Everything requires skill and thought and everything is interrelated. Have a good one my friends.

I think it is important to have a number of strong interests which you constantly work on or go back to, interests so strong that you can get lost in them for hours. When things go bad, you can "escape" to them and/or work on perfecting your skills in your favorite interests. Over time you will not have lost valuable time in depression, etc. but still be growing and developing in spite of a bad mood. Later you will look back and realize how this philosophy makes you stronger and more confident because you have found constructive ways to work through issues and yet continue to develop. You will learn to rely on it to take you through most bad times and perhaps become excellent in many new areas as well. And I also think physical activity is one of most important areas to develop as it will help you be healthy into old age when you can continue to grow your skills and interests.

@Jasmine Corner you forgot something crucial: not just color choice, brush choice or stroke. Also a lot of practice at *Looking* and transferring what you are seeing (whether in your minds eye or from a reference photo ) onto the paper, canvas etc. Hand eye coordination doeesn't just come automatically to most of us, it does take a lot of practice. Most newbies aren't ready to hear this news. I don't know why. Especially since no other skill is instantaneous in life!

9:00 The "rollercoaster" makes things SO HARD... ALL THE TIME. I always hit a moment where I hate what I'm working on, but then I'm always glad I pushed through. My friends tell me the more I hate a piece while I'm working on it, the more they end up loving it in the end.

I'm a digital artist, and watching how you apply color has helped me in becoming a better digital artist, and approach my workflow differently.

Just love the jack of all trades thing you said, the first time I ever heard someone speak of this. I loooove to do realism, but also love abstract, but then also like pen and ink and watercolors. And each one teaches me something new. I can never do one thing for a long time

^ The fact that we only know the first line of that stymies a lot of us; it sounds like jacks of all trades are being insulted, when in fact the idiom insults those who only master a single craft or subject.

@@danwei3681 if u ask me it just depends on situation and what u prefer/enjoy more. that last tip from him sounds more like personal thing that he prefers. but in the end both ways have their upsides and downsides. i feel like jack of all trades cause i was longboarding/rollerblading for years. im very good at video games and im artists too. i can mix experience from all of these into my art and see some sides more clear but in the end i feel like total sht when i look at art masters that just do that one thing whole life. there was reverse saying that went something like: person that practiced one kick 1000 times is more scary than person who practiced 1000 versions of kicks 1 time. i feel like master of art would have no problem with drawing something with very good quality... but he would struggle with depth of meaning of the art or original ideas. while jack would suck with quality but have easier time with all the lore/ideas behind the art he does...
This video helped me feel more confident about my artwork. Thanks for helping me past a pretty big roadblock. I’m a mask maker, candy cooker, replica prop maker, hatmaker, musician, and am trying to branch out into as many mediums as possible. I’ve been so emotionally trapped in the “rollercoaster” you talked about, now I know I have to move past and finish my work with dedication. Thanks for this channel good sir

Just today i was thinking how grateful i am that i expanded my mediums. First i only used pencil, then ooonly digital, but then i moved to watercolor, oils, and i learnt a lot. Everything that i learnt from every medium can be used in all of them haha

I'm the same way, I love using different mediums and trying different styles, from cooking to sculpting, pencils, oil paint, water color, ink, murals. The possibilities are endless and my inspirations and taste widely vary. Take a look at Warhol, he did it all and had huge success. If someone comes to me and wants a business card, I want to be able to do it. If they want a 10 ft graffiti style mural I also wanna do it. Clay figurine of a horse? If they want a logo or someone to illustrate their book, I wanna do it !

I absolutely loved this video. I spent 40 years as a teacher and was always getting art supplies, doing art, teaching art, taking classes, to benefit others, and even though I got great benefit as well, over the years my basement studio filled up with materials to do almost anything. Glass, clay, watercolor, wirework, beading, ink pouring, paper cutting. I've never been able to focus long enough on what I want to do, until I retired two years ago. There is something to be said for being a master in one discipline, like Alpay. That's what I've always wanted. I'm a jack of all trades, but I want to be a master of one. I don't always feel like I have the discipline to do that. Alpay's video gave me a lot to think about. Thank you.
When you said "Being artist is hard" I thought you are going to say "because supplies are expensive."

while I would say I'm not anywhere near amazing at art (in a sense that I've made huge impacts with it), I literally just use a cheap pencil I picked up from school and an old mechanical pencil I stole from my sister and yet here I am still making art. I personally think a great artist is someone who can work with what they have, look at those people who do art with their feet and stuff despite lacking arms, and those who still do art despite being blind. If you really like art, good products is just a bonus to increase the quality, but you can't get good skill in pricey art materials. Dunno what logic you're having with being poor when my family is also basically poor.
Hi, a professional artist, Eliza Ivanova/eleeza on ig, mainly works with pencils and those tortellinis/blenders (yes I know I spelled it wrong) and an eraser. She does amazing work with just pencil and eraser. You can too!!

I used to draw alot in high school but stopped because, well you said it, I was my own worst critic. Every time I would start something if I messed up even a small bit I'd give up and quit. Its been 10 years since then and recently have been on a journey to re-find myself. I am trying my hand at painting with acrylics and your video truly inspired me. Especially when you said not to wait for inspiration. That is what I was doing this whole time, now I am just going to paint non stop and get better. Thank you.

as i am watching this video, i'm sat in front of my pencil drawn portrait on my canvas waiting for some courage to begin the oil painting. I was nervous to mess up and not make a great piece of art im proud of. So thank you for this video and advice, I need to put my ego aside and simply practice, and its ok if i mess up. If it turns out to be the most terrible thing i created, I can still have a great day :)

There are no mistakes in art
let me suggest this one thing: anytime you make anything you're happy with take a picture of it. if you have a good quality scanner, scan it. that way if the painting goes south, and mine often do, I can still go back and look at that drawing, or look at that point in the painting process that I was very pleased with, and still enjoy that. I haven't lost it physically.

Get cheap canvases or a canvas pad and make a mess! Then you feel like you have nothing to lose and can get into a flow state. When I feel this fear I just get a big brush and pick a colour and make marks without thought just to get started. It's so liberating! As a bonus those often end up becoming my favourite works.
I really love when artists like you can explain their philosophy with practical and logical answers. So relaxing and soothing to hear.
thank you! wonderful words and painting, I feel like I suck at art and keep practicing different techniques and like it is a flaw of mine that I keep jumping around instead on focusing on one medium and gtting better at it. I can't stick to one style, my soul calls for trying new things and feels like it won't get better over time. Your words were encouraging to just do and maybe it will all click one day.

5 caught my attention, I do traditional, digital drawing and I started painting a few months ago, having knowledge in these other two areas really helps me to paint now. The techniques, inspirations, studies and even creativity in the production of paintings, all of this made a difference to me!

I needed to hear this. I just started painting about 5 years ago and my passion is watercolor but I really have gotten into acrylic and I have an artist friend who's helped me with pastel's, but I though that I would be jack of all trades master of none. I also painted yesterday and the painting was horrible so I was depressed the rest of the day and discouraged. It was great hearing this

The roller coaster of emotion is so true..I'm a mom and have so much distractions working/painting from home. I just want to destroy a commissioned portrait in the middle of my child's tantrum. Just couldn't get the skin right because I'm already distracted by the noise and the crying. Wew

Thank you Alpay. That was an inspirational pep talk. I'm 63 years old and have dabbled with different mediums and styles. Then I stopped giving time to my art. I just kept on working and working, never giving myself time to ...create something for myself again. I stopped years ago.
6 months ago, out of the blue I bought 5 canvases , some brushes, and Acrylic tube palette. I never acted like that before. It's been sitting for 6 months. After watching this video ,You've inspired me sir. I just penciled on canvas my subject of learning again. Let the paint fly.
