This is insane considering it's an acrylic I mean they dry so fast! I thought this was an oil painting from the thumbnail! I love it, it inspires me to paint still life again. 😳
Marianne I'm not an artist but trying to be one .....love paintings ...watched your videos and absolutely fallen in love with the way you paint and teach .I'm 50 years old but its never too late I guess.
Tina, this comment made my day! I so hope you pick up that brush! This is YOUR life and it’s too short to spend your time waiting to try something that will bring you joy. Good luck as you begin your painting chapter!
Marianne..thank you for sharing. I love that you shared your struggle with the background. When I was teaching I always felt it helped students to see that even a seasoned professional artist still struggle and make mistakes and have to step back and rethink things out. They need to understand that painting is a forever evolving and learning process….we should all be continuing to push ourselves to grow as artist no matter how long we have been an artist.
I appreciate this feedback sooooo much! I’m so glad I tried it out, and the frustration was worth it if it means other folks will be inspired to keep going when they make their mistakes too. Thank you so much for taking the time to write 🥰
Hats off to you Marianne for trying something and then, when it wasn't what you wanted, kept it in the video and shared it with us. @@MarianneVanderDussen
This is stunning, you really created a delicately rich flower that keeps the eye moving because you can't believe what you're seeing!!! EXQUISITE PAINTING!
That is absolutely strikingly beautiful!! The depth and dimension is so lifelike that you want to touch it!! Thank you for all of your very helpful information!! It is so difficult to learn how to draw/paint both the shapes and colors that you see in a reference image. I literally just sketched out some flowers and leaves that I liked on my shower curtain. I kept reminding myself that although the individual petals do not look like what I imagine they should, as a whole they all work together 😊
Thank you so much for this amazing comment! I love what you said about how we should look at the piece on the whole and not necessarily fixate on individual petals. Fantastic attitude!
i love what you said about color preconception, i always have my friends laughing when i point how beautiful those blue shadows look a that moment... or how funny the black fur of the dog looks when reflecting every color of the ambient
It's so so true! When you train yourself to see past what you think colours should be, the world becomes this fascinating, colourful place. Just don't ask me to choose an off-white colour for the walls, I'll be obsessing over test cans for days because I'm so sensitive to the undertone!
Awww Michelle, you just made my day! You ABSOLUTELY can paint like this, anyone can. I'm currently working on a full length course featuring coral charm peonies, but I'll be offering a free timelapse version to TH-cam when it's done, that way if the course isn't something people want to invest in at that time, they can still watch the process and know it's something they can tackle. Thank you for your incredibly kind words.
This is absolutely breathtaking. I have several varieties of Peonies in my garden, and none has ever Iooked as beautiful as these. Thanks for the tips. It is a tough act to follow but I am inspired to try.
Yay! I hope you do try!!! My first florals were tiger lilies, and I was so discouraged by the first layer. But I kept going, and about four layers later it was much, much better.
Gorgeous painting! Your rough, blocked in first layer was even perfect. I just found your channel so I'm ready to relax and start watching. Thanks for explaining so much! Other tutorials use the words but assume we all know them. I'm equally impressed you read AND replied to 385 comments.....Wow! Thanks so much!

Wow, this video was so calming. I loved listening to you. You spoke clearly and so slowly! The downside of YT is everyone speed talking! Absolutely stunning work. You have found a fan! I’ve followed you on all platforms!!!! Xxxxx
First of all the work is brilliant, I imagine if you do even a bigger one it can be a master centrepiece for example in the 4 Seasons’ lobby area. Second - the way you explain the process is very helpful and calming. Keep up the great work! We will be looking forward to it!
This is a super video. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I love this style of painting. I almost 80 and am a novice to painting but I am going to try this. Greetings from Trinidad in the Caribbean.
Your videos are absolutely PACKED full of fabulous information! And your paintings are gorgeous! I love and appreciate how you say how much time you spent on painting this painting. Too many times people think they are supposed to be able to create something this beautiful, and rich, and full of fabulous layers in 11:23 (the length of the video!) Keep up the awesome work!!!
I’m so so happy that you liked it!!! Start to finish, this painting took about three weeks, about 40-50 hours total. It’s a LOT of work, but once you’re used to the idea that you need multiple layers, it becomes a bit more comfortable! I’m so happy you’re enjoying the videos!!!
I love florals and have only created one large painting of Peonies. I love watching you paint and your explanations of everything!!! Thank you so much for allowing us to step into your studio!!
Great question! Sometimes I use a small piece of painter’s tape on my reference image to make sure I’m working on the right petal. You’re right…it’s so easy to go cross-eyed!

Marianne, I’ve watched many, many art videos on YT and this, BY FAR, is the best I’ve ever seen. You’re not just showing us your skills, but you’re also teaching viewers how to improve their own skills. And your work is GORGEOUS! You’re an amazing teacher. Thank you! I definitely look forward to your future videos. Question: Why did you utilize, for the most part, one brush size for this size canvas? I don’t know if I’d have the patience to do so, so I’m extremely curious. Again, well done with this piece. 🙂
Hi Pamela, wow thank you so much!!! You authentically made my day! In terms of the brush size, I used anywhere between an 8 to 12 flat or filbert when I was blocking in the larger petals, then would size down to 4s and 6s when doing some of the modeling and sculpting, finishing up with detail brushes if needed. On a painting this size I didn’t really do a lot of finicky details.
