Hyundai Ioniq 5 - Is this the "Tesla Killer" everyone says it is?

  • We saw the concept car back in 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and we were blown away by the looks. But now that it is here, is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 worthy of all the hype? Does it move the game on, and is it really the "Tesla Killer" that everyone says it is? As always, the @AutoEV road test is here to bring you the definitive verdict on this latest addition to the swelling EV ranks.

Hey Mate, thanks for having me. Obviously I love the car. The ride is smooth, very quiet and incredibly spacious. The only issue I had while on my test drive (which was also in the rain) was the rear window and lack of visibility. No idea why they decided to not include a rear wiper. The heads up display has to be seen to be believed. Loved this car.

Drive a boat and you have forward for forwards and back for backwards just makes sense in any world surely 🤷🏻‍♂️ (or is that just me) also the Poverty model (below 50K) has 18” wheels the model I drove had 19” and the ride was spot on , loved driving it for the time they let me loose 😊

I haven't looked at all 862 other comments to see if anyone has asked this but please could you tell me what the colour of that car you drove is called? I love it! I'd call it "smoky blue" but no doubt Hyundai have a fancy name. I really like the car - I test drove one at Fully Charged Live! If I were to come in to some money, I'd be at the Hyundai dealership tomorrow. As things are, I just try to win competitions or the lottery.

Good review. I’ve got the Project 45 version. Lovely. My only critique of the review is reference to “large car”. Whilst the wheelbase is long, the overhangs are small. So overall the car is shorter than a BMW 3 series or a Mondeo. So not that big. You can turn the lane keep assist & road departure mitigation off via the steering wheel right hand button. Yes have to do each time (legal requirement for safety score)

A very interesting and thoughtful review of a vehicle that has rightly won many plaudits from commentators. I like it as much because it is so clearly different from its perceived competitors as well as being an obviously well conceived and designed EV. Your review of this car along with those you have produced about its rivals have correctly focused on how families might get on with it both in urban and non urban environments. However I think it might also be instructive if you can offer comments on how two adults might react to such vehicles and their attributes and deficiencies. For me the Ioniq 5 will be an excellent car for two people moving around the country and that is an important factor in my decision to order one.

Great video again Bryan. Love the car but I totally agree about all the bongs and bings. It’s an annoyance that’s affecting almost every new car these days.
I disagree on the drive/reverse selection though. Logically forward to go forwards and backward to go backwards makes sense. The other way around is a hangover from the “old days” when the gear leave was mechanically connected to the gearbox, and pulling the top backwards actually pushed the bottom (below the pivot point) forwards. But when you think about it, it’s totally illogical. You’re just suffering from muscle memory which going forwards, people won’t have an issue with. Jaguar did it with the buttons on the I-Pace too, and got some stuck from people for the same reason. But again, when you think about it, pushing the button nearest the front of the car for forwards and the button nearest the back of the car for reverse is actually quite sensible. There. And you thought you went on about it for too long! 🤣
Anyway. Good video. Nice car. Love the looks (although I do wonder if it’s maybe trying a bit too hard at times). And love the charging speeds!

I test drove one a couple of weeks ago. It’s a gorgeous design with a fantastic interior and smooth quiet ride. I would have been very happy to order one (as a company car) apart from one thing. The boot, although it says 527 litres is really shallow in real life i.e. it’s flat and wide but not very tall. As we do a lot of camping and have a big dog we need something with a squarer back. It also doesn’t have roof rails (although you can get crossbars) or a factory option for a towbar, so I’ve ordered a Q4 E-Tron - also a great car. On my company scheme they have the same monthly cost in Ultimate spec (Ionic) compared to S-Line (Q4) - surprisingly a Skoda Enyaq is considerably more expensive to lease. If I was buying privately it would be a different story but for my needs I just can’t justify the compromise on practicality. Shame as if it was just for me I would have the Ionic in a heartbeat.

No wiper on the back windshield is a show stopper for me. Backup cams are great, but it can be hard to see what's behind that massive C pillar, even with a cam back there. I live in Edmonton and most of our winter involves sloppy roads wet with snow and sand, and I'm constantly using my rear wiper / washer to keep the back window clear. I can't imagine how often I'd have to get out to hand wash the rear windshield if I owned this car.

Hi Wayne. Not one for vehicle review channels, but I came by to watch cuz Wayne said to do so. Personally, I'm not a fan of new car concepts ( I'm a die-hard American Muscle Car fan, sorry, not sorry) but I do admire all they technology they can cram into these new cars. I feel like I'm being dragged, kicking & screaming, into the 21st century. Progress, not perfection, am I right? But I'm glad I watched. Thank you for explaining some of the complicated features that I still feel are uncomfortable. I prefer to feel like I AM driving the car, not a passenger in a car virtually driving it's self. I want to "feel" the mechanics, if that makes sense. Newer cars are so very insulated that I can't hear, smell, feel the car. Feels unsafe to me. Guess I'll be sticking with my pre-2000 models, and I'm okay with that.

Her name is Jeepsie Rose, she doesn’t like the summer, but during the winter she is super fun! She has that old time Jeep “Lip” at the bottom that you need to step over to get in and out of the car and I never warn people about it, and yes, I have had people fall into and out of my car, which I find funny in a dark kind of way? 😂 thank you for your wonderful video, I have never driven a car with the driver on that side of the car or the car on that side of the road but I am hoping someday…. 💗

What I would like is ota updates which the i5 does not have yet no? Another thing, appearantly from other owners , the temperature of the battery, for it to be able to charge very fast it has to come up to around 20-25 degrees c but during the winter it isn't able to come up to temperature even though that you have ridden with for a while. Also I believe that it has a heat pump but if it can not bring up the temperature it really doesn't do a great job... ?!
This makes me a bit worried cause the 800v system is one of my biggest arguement besides the fantastic ride quality and the spaceous room inside the car.

I'm kinda torn about the design. Especially when compared to the Ariya. When I fist saw the Ariya I went eeew and when I first saw the Ioniq 5 I went WOOOOW. But the longer I look at those two, my perspective changes. Where the Ioniq 5 is pretty much all flashy effects and plays the part of a futuristic car, it actually looks like we all imagined futuristic cars in the 80s. And I doubt this sort of "effect" design will stand the test of time. Meanwhile, the Ariyas looks grew on me more and more. It's way more subtle, typical contemporary japanese design may seem awkward at first, but - as all great designs do - has a real asthetic to it. Something the Ioniq 5 completely misses out on. It's the new, white Adidas sneaker you wear to a party, only to get rid off after half a year since it's no longer new again, whereas the Ariya - so it seems to me - is more of the italian shoe variety. Those ones that you'll still have 10 years from now. Of yourse, this is only my personal view. Also, looks are only looks. So, your mileage may vary. But I can't help to be slightly underwhelmed by the Ioniq5, especially since they started popping up on the streets recently.

    • @420hansol
      @420hansol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ioniq 5's design que is from Hyundai's first model Pony, which was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. It's a timeless classic design IMO. Giorgetto Giugiaro is a legendary Italian car designer and you comparing Ariya to a italian shoe variety sounds funny. Then again, you should purchase whatever is that you'd require from EV daily perspective, also to your liking.

I mention on more than one occasion how comfortable the seats are. I also say that the blind spot cameras are an option, but I feel they are an option worth having. I have to mention that the speed is obscured by the steering wheel because the HUD might not be fitted to all cars, and the dashboard can't be reconfigured to allow for that. Plus, I still like to look at the instrument binnacle of a car. You are, however, correct at my mistake on the range of the AWD car. It is 268 miles. IMHO, IONIQ 5 vs TESLA MODEL Y... :
Tesla great job, max speed, range especially leveraging its shape and weight. Still prefer, being in Europe, comfort. 99% of my trips are within 200kms one way. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I do look forward to ventilated seats, Android Auto, the roomy and comfortable interior, HUD, real blindspot monitoring, 360 camera. Also like reclining seats with foot rest and reclining console for arms rest, all electronic aids especially against collisions, automated parking (top trim), blind spot cams on dashboard when turning, V2L, sun shades integrated in back doors, electric sunroof shade, wide space available inside with good visibility through the back window etc.
And the obviously efficient 400V to 800V internal battery inverter for fast charging.
Other bugs with Tesla : Model 3 too low on the ground (Model Y is a perfected Model 3); door handles too complicated for kids and scratchy with persons with long finger nails; blue jeans bleed on those white seats.; simplistic navigation system(whereas under ANDROID AUTO, ABRP beta notably has settings for car weight, or TomTom Go 's use of all offline maps etc. ); quality of paint jobs ; mediocre internal lighting; loud alerts not compatible with family driving; max AWD weight capacity 300 Kg.
Also 5 year car warranty illimited kms (Max 80 000 for Tesla... Reliability issues?), and 8 year battery warranty (same as Tesla).
Comment by Park Shawn translating from Korean to English this video :
    th-cam.com/video/rWBAJu_S4lk/w-d-xo.html
Ionic 5 LR and Model Y LR both have similar spec including weight, battery sizes. Details can be found on google. Here are some highlights from the conclusion they brought up at the end of the video. 1. Both car's AVG speed were about 100KM/h (Highway drive) 2. Both car's A/C and other convenience functions(like Highway drive assistance for Ionic 5, Auto Pilot for Model Y and etc.) were always on during the test. 3. 4 drivers drove about 100km per person and checked the remaining battery at designated location. 4. Both car have shown slightly poor battery performance than usual because of the weather condition (rain) 5. By just looking at the specification, Model Y can drive 141km more than Ionic 5. However the actual drive test have shown that the difference were only about 60~70km. This experiment have shown that IONIC 5's driving range is little longer than what Hyundai advertised. 6. They have concluded that both Ionic 5 and Model Y can drive from Seoul to Busan. The distance between those two cities are about 350km. Hope this helps.
Furthermore, according to JD POWER, KIA (Hyundai Group) #1 in reliability before Toyota. Tesla bottom. German automakers middle of the road (Mercedes, Audi)...

He found the battery overheated. I’m in regional Australia. If it can’t handle highway running in Sweden during Autumn there is no way it will cope with Australian Summer temperatures. It will be a fine second car for city dwellers, but that is it.

There are numerous people with an Ionic 5 not having any problem with overheating what so ever.
For me the clear wiper isn’t that big of a deal either. I’ll spray on some rain-x and if that’s not enough it has camera’s on the back and side mirrors to see everything clearly.
Björns headlight video was also not correct since the cars light aren’t calibrated correctly. This needs to be fixed by the dealer but wasn’t done.
