  • The market for EV family crossovers is overflowing with lots of talent. Volkswagen want to be number one when it comes to electric mobility, however the, admittedly good, ID.4 left us a little bit disappointed. Can Skoda, up until now the value brand of the group, win us over with their new Enyaq iV? Does it have what it takes to be the new champion, and better older brother VW at its own game? Bryan subjects it to the usual, thorough AutoEV road test to find out.

    One of the better reviews BUT as an owner of an Enyaq 60 Suite (current mileage 700) there are one or two aspects potential buyers should be aware of. Firstly let me say we are very pleased with the car but do feel somewhat let down by the way Skoda marketed the car and most journalists reported on it. Your comments about it being comfortable and quiet accord with most road test videos but most road test cars were 80s equipped with adjustable dampers via the Drive Sport Plus package. I reckoned that our 60, being lighter due to the smaller battery, would not need quite such stiff suspension and with the standard 19” wheels should ride well and would not need that £785 option. Ok at speed on decent roads it’s fine but on the country roads which we spend a lot of time on the ride is “firm” to the point of being uncomfortable and if there are lumps and bumps on the near side surface the car can pitch a bit from side to side. Also many road test cars (not this one apparently) were fitted with the acoustic glass (convenience package basic) which I think quietens the car considerably. Our car is quiet at low speed but as soon as you get going the tyre noise (Pirelli Scorpion Elect - claimed to be very quiet) becomes very apparent and at speed is poor. Quiet it is not! Brakes. Ours are not spongey in the least and stopping is progressive in either mode And when using the “B” setting, which gives maximum regen, you can adopt as near one pedal driving as I think is desirable and thus has become the way my wife and I drive all the time. BUT those paddles which adjust the regen are a complete waste of time and money. They only work in the “D” mode in which regen is normally automatic and does actually work pretty well. To increase the regen or let it coast you use the paddles once you have taken your foot off the accelerator but as soon as you touch any pedal again the regen defaults to Auto. My advice would be to try before you buy and make sure the car you try is the specification you have in mind. Just pester your dealer to get one through the Skoda dealer network.
    We use Octopus Energy GO tariff which costs 5p per kWh between 00.30 and 4.30 a.m. we are getting 3.5 miles per kWh overall do just a bit more than a Penny Farthing per mile and charging at 7kW means we get up to almost 100 miles overnight. As we do typically no more than 30 - 50 miles per day this is plenty. A recent round trip of 190 miles from a 100% charge (we normally charge to 80% only) started showing 242 miles range and finished with just 23 implying an actual range of 213 miles i.e. 3.67 m / kWh from the 58 usable kWh battery. This journey had rural roads at both end sandwiching motorway miles at 65mph.

      This is really helpful, thank you! I’m going to order an Enyaq, thought I needed the adaptive damping but the test car I drove on 21in wheels was v comfortable without it. However it was an 80 and it didn’t occur to me that a 60 is lighter and would therefore probably need it. The demo also had acoustic side glass (and was v quiet)- perhaps I need that too?! I fancy the pan roof, does your car have one?
      Interesting too re the range. I was reckoning on a safe range of 200 miles which sounds achievable

      @@preggr3577 We have two grandchildren of 1 and 4 and one real benefit of the Enyaq is that there is plenty of space to get their seats in and out and to manoeuvre the children into the seats. There is an option that includes rear window blinds that you might find useful.

    Very mean of Skoda to not fit the faster charger, and as far as I know; the heat pump is also an optional extra... Something that should be standard on all electric cars.

      Since of april they made it standard and adjusted the price. Atleast in sweden.

    Finally - an honest review about the price comparison between this and the ID.4 - compared to lazy reviews that simply spout how much cheaper Skoda's are without specc'ing them up to equivalent levels. Still a lovely car, but I couldn't afford to wait and the optional extras game wasn't fun to play...

    It’s totally subjective, but I think the styling is clunky; the Hyundai Ionic 5 and Kia EV6 have moved the game on light years. We did go to take a rest drive, however, but the salesperson was so utterly awful we walked out so didn’t get to try it - totally agree about the ouch! option list.

    Great review, subscribed and looking forward to more of the same! On the single pedal driving the Enyaq I drove didn’t go to a complete stop, I think it’s the same on all MEB ev’s. Would be curious to see if this might be available as a OTA update or if it’s a physical restriction

    Good review, I can tell you like this one😃 Are there any of the software bugs evident in the car? This seems to be a problem in the id3 range.

    Really enjoyed your review but a little confusing as there were two different cars used. Both were red but one was a Czech left hand drive and your right hand drive. Very obvious in some of the footage such as privacy glass on the Czech car and none on your and interior of yours right hand but some footage left hand. Anyway I took possession of an Enyaq last Friday. Artic ice and Eco Suite. I totally agree with you on the options. I did not spec mine as the garage did. So Family pack, climate pack, trailer hitch preparation but not the hitch and upgraded 19 inch wheels. I would have opted for the 125 KW charger if I had the choice. It’s my first EV and so far I love it even though I have only put up 200 km since. I find the brakes fine and am using the recuperation pads on the steering wheel more than I expected. As far a range it’s too early for me to know but I have 66% battery left after the 200Km’s. No regrets having changed from an Audi Q5 SLine.

      Hi @Dermott Walsh. Your eyes didn't deceive you, they were two different cars. Normally I film on my own, which makes tracking shots and B-roll very difficult. Handily, a lot of manufacturers provide us with those extra bits of film that we try to integrate into our own video to vary the shots a bit more, so for instance, when I am talking about driving impressions, I can swap between my in-car talking-to-camera with some cornering shots or the like. It just breaks the monotony of having to look at my visage all the time, and hopefully makes it a bit more interesting. Obviously, depending on the manufacturer, it may be a LHD car, or even one in a completely different colour. Porsche usually provide us with B-roll of their own actual press cars, so the continuity is even better. It was just pure luck that Skoda had some of the red car that was the same spec, bar the LHD and privacy glass.     This was shortlisted but lost out to the Kia EV6, I am now waiting for a delivery date. I agree though, definitely better than than the ID4 in looks and design.

      Unfortunately the ID4, Enyaq, EV6 and even the Ioniq5 are not yet available in the New Zealand market at this time, so while it is really tantalising to see what will be coming in the future, but none of these vehicles have confirmed delivery dates. I believe the Skoda may arrive in 2023.

    This was on my short list for an ev, but what got to me was the amount of packs I needed to bring it up to the spec of a model 3. By the time I got the equipment to that level, it was more expensive! So went with model 3

      This was the same for me as the model y wasn’t available at the time I had to put my order in (company car). Don’t regret it at all as the Tesla network is superb and pretty much worry free. The boot in the model 3 is also deceptive as the opening is small (but big enough) but the depth is actually deeper than the Audi q4 and comparable to the enyag. With this extra depth we can push the pushchair right to the back of the seats and still have access to the extra under floor storage and above it giving us way more room than in these compact SUV’s which we would have had to load our stuff on top of the push chair in. Therefore for everyday use (me on my own motorway running) the Tesla had better range and infrastructure, was cheaper to run and then on weekends with the family it was also practical as it had enough room for a child’s seat and baby seat, push chair and more.
      I therefore recommend that you take all the stuff you normally shift around with you to a test drive and load the car up. You may be surprised that the “smaller” none suv cars are actually more practical!

    "clever little touches". Yes, I first spotted some of those on the 2001 Fabia I bought new. Skoda have been evolving and adding them ever since.... Re: build quality. I'm now of the opinon that Skoda build quality sometimes tops VW's.......and is nudging into Audi territory, as you suggested.

    Great review thanks very much. The shame is that we’ll be getting our car on the Motability scheme, and where is the ID for is available on the Motability scheme the Skoda is not. I’m sure it will become available in about six months time, but we have to get our car now. Never mind, thanks again

      Don’t be down about not getting the Skoda. I’ve priced and costed the whole VW AG range (because I’m in the same buying quandary as yourself) and I’ve decided on a VW 1st Edition ID4 (single motor) because it represents the best bang for buck in UK and is a fantastic car. It has a few extras more than the low spec entry level cars…rear camera, nice wheels, the 77kWh battery, 125kW charging speed, 204hp motor and weighs less (increasing the range) without the pano glass roof “Family” edition. The heat pump is essential, so add £1k to the price.
      The Skoda comes out more expensive if you attempt to spec it with similar levels.
      Just lastly, while the car on review here is lovely, it’s price isn’t, and all of these cars have no savings to be had so spend on what you can afford. If you live in Scotland take advantage of the gov EV loan at 0% interest as it’s helped get the finance lower for ownership than motobility or leasing (without ownership).

    Hi, Oscillating between a 2 year old Jag ipace and a new enyaq. Enyaq does cost quite a bit to spec it to ipace HSE or SE level with all the different packs. Wondering what would you suggest for a family of 4 ( 14 year old and 8 year old) for the next 5 years. We do about 15k miles per year on average

      Well the Enyaq is a superb car. In fact, it’s probably the best all round family EV we have tested. But we do love the Jag! A great piece of design, superb to drive and a real sense of occasion to own. If you need the space, the Enyaq takes some beating. However, if you don’t, the Jaguar is probably what I’d move towards. But just to throw a car amongst the pigeons, have you considered the Kia EV6? We did a video comparing s new EV6 against a used I-Pace (check it out). I’d take a look at one of those before making your mind up. You’ll have a manufacturers warranty, great car to drive, very efficient and a real good looking car.

    I actually like that they only have 50 kwh charge.. a guy lost 8% in 1 year of his battery, VW ID car.. alot of fast charging

    We're trying to decide between a high spec Enyaq and an EV6. We've tried them and they are both marvellous examples of the type. However, we're down in Cornwall and so travel entails long motorway trips but we don't have any motorways to test drive on down here. Which is the better motorway cruiser for comfort do you think? Thanks for these really helpful reviews. They're the best.

      Well first of all Pete, thank you for watching, taking the time to watch and support the channel and coming to us with your question. Cornwall is almost my second home as we spend a couple of weeks a year down there in holiday. My daughter, my partner, myself and our dog, just love it there. We will be there in a weeks time for half term.
      Ok, both choices are good cars. I love both. The Enyaq is (in our humble opinion) the best of the VW MEB platform cars. Very roomy, well built and nice to drive. However, I’m a massive fan of the EV6, and Kia (including Hyundai and Genesis as they are spun off the same platform) just smash it when it comes to efficiency and drivability these days. I’d suggest the EV6 would take the win for me. Better efficiency, higher charging speeds (so you’ll benefit from the big Ionity chargers, getting you back on the road faster) and a really refined car to drive. Smooth, effortless and looks cool In my opinion. I do love the Enyaq, but the EV6 is the better car for me. Slick interior, comfortable and a better EV architecture. And although both are great cruisers, the Kia is a smidge more refined. Just try it for driving position though. Taller people struggle. I’m only 5’ 8” and I’m fine. People at 6ft have sometimes found the driving position cramped for headroom.

      @@AutoEV Brilliant, Bryan, thank you. A couple of thoughts (all of course highly subjective): EV6: beautiful car - better looking than the I-Pace. 7 year warranty - great. Charging speeds really useful. Ionity perfectly paced in Magor and Chippenham for our regular trips to West Wales and Cambridge. That valet function might actually be very useful with modern cars being so wide. We have 3 dings in the Q3 from a local multi-storey so handy to be able to park really tight to a pillar. Interior a bit dark (I've had 70k miles in our sensible, sombre Q3) but how do you keep those seats clean living on a smallholding with three rumbustious grandchildren? (Looked at its obvious rival the Back to the Future Ionic 5. Isn't it just an Austin Allegro with creases and a blingey interior?) The only reason for still hankering after the Enyaq is that wonderful Cognac leather interior. It's simply the best trim I've seen in any current car and just needs a set of plush velour curtains to finish it off. If you could get it in AWD I'd almost certainly plump for that despite your good counsel. The payoff for 2wd (apart from the cost saving) however is a turning circle 2m smaller than the Enyaq in 2wd or AWD. However the 2wd is a bit sluggish by modern standards. Definitely down to one of these two but.... should I wait for the iX1??.. If you find yourself near St Agnes when you're down and fancy meeting up for a coffee then do get in touch. Cheers.

      @@petemitchell9111 we have a big triple test coming this Wednesday which includes the iX1. Should be in the channel at 7pm on Wednesday. EV6 and Enyaq both available with AWD (and I really rate the Enyaq 80X) and I, like you, do like that interior on the Skoda.
      I’m currently driving an Ioniq 5 and a Genesis GV60 for a review coming in a few weeks time. The lighter interiors aren’t the best with children for sure!
      St Agnes is a lovely area! Can’t wait to visit again.

    Stunning wheels, I mucked up and got the 20". Looks fine with the Moon White metallic but still think the 21" would've looked better.
    Other 2 regrets:
    Should've picked EcoSuite over Suite, more interesting design and was peer pressured into all black as everyone said the brown is too edgy haha!
    Other one was not getting the heat pack for the battery. This is the UK we're in... how the hell have they not included this as standard?
    Does wireless charging come as standard or with convenience package only?
    Beautiful car and I can't wait to get mine end of August but far too many extras that I think should be as standard.

    I would've most likely gone for this car if it didn't have a 12 month delivery... I managed to get a hold of a MY22 XC40 Recharge though, which is set to be delivered in June. But the Enyaq is a bit more spacious, which gives it a few points in its favor when you have 3 kids under the age of 5.

      Trust me, the build quality varies greatly. I drove the Audi Q4 E-tron this week and it too trumps the ID.4 for build quality and use of materials.

    It was a good review. However, VW is the youngster in the relationship. Skoda was founded in 1895 and built its first hybrid vehicle back in 1908, its first electric truck in 1938. It was quite an innovative company before Czechoslovakia became communist after the WW2. It looks like Skoda is returning to its routes. Thank you for your review and I hope you don't mind me quoting some facts. I agree with you, its a much better looking car than the ID4 and I prefer the internal materials and higher spec finish.

    Problem is you have to pay extra for 100kw charging capability and a Rear View Camera .... which then makes its more expensive than a Base ID.4 with those items built in. And they use the same platform. The "cheap" Skoda is not longer "Cheap" just missing standard tech VW has on their cars.

    I'm obviously on one today. This is a general comment about car reviewers, but why are the top of the range models the ones that are reviewed? It would be far more revealing if you could also review the entry level model with no options as well.

      It's a fair question to ask, and one I am happy to answer. Simply put, it is all down to what press is available. Manufacturers tend to run highly specified cars in their press fleets to show what can be had with the car, and thus reported on. Also, at some point, these cars will be sold , usually to their dealers to sell to end users, and so they option them up to make them more desirable come resale time. Trust me, I'd be happy to review the lower spec cars, but we can only have what we are given. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Bryan.

    Appears to be very, very nice.... but overall, for the money and reliability factors ( Around the world ...) I will still take the VW ID Pro or Pro S. I like having V.W. standing behind me, than Skoda. 👍👌

    Great to see Skoda joining in more BEVs but another SUV big nose no frounk! if I was get a big SUV Tesla Y is still king 🙂🌏🌈

      Difficult choice as both are excellent cars. The e-Niro is a real value package, very refined and is superbly efficient. The Enyaq is a bit roomier, more modern and is of a better design. Drive both before deciding is all I would say. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

      @@AutoEV Thanks for the reply. Can get a first edition eniro now for about £26k. I think the only downside vs a newer one is the smaller screen?

      @@Zimpaz yes, pretty much. The newer car has a slightly bigger, more integrated infotainment screen. Otherwise, they are pretty much identifical....and all the better for it.

      @@Zimpaz the screen looks better designed into the dashboard, rather than looking like one that was just put into the space. Does that make sense? It just "looks" better in terms of the aesthetics.

    Jaguar i-Pace has dodgy brakes as well. Sometime, after speeding, I doubted the car would stop in time.

    Š.K.O.D.A in the rear is not a logo, it is called a lettering. Also, the boot space is 585, not 565 liters. ;-) Great review.

    I just can't see the need for or understand the need for fake grills. The car would look better without it. For example, I have electric lighting in my house but don't feel traumatised that it doesn't look like gas lights.
    My current car doesn't have a fake choke control or hand crank point, so why the fake grill? Yes this point does apply to all cars with fake grills.

      The Tesla Middl 3 has no grill and us the blandest looking car going. Skoda clearly want to appeal to traditionalists (like me) so have given it the family face of all their SUVs. VW Group product planners gave the task of appealing to younger, more forward looking customers to Volkswagen hence the ID3 and ID4.

    Volkswagen was established in 1937 with help of Hitler and Mr. Porsche based on Tatra passenger cars and Skoda, Czech brands (Bohemia in Austro-Hungary). They both belong to the oldest car brands in the world, producing cars since 1897. So the younger sibling is not entirely correct. They were suffocating during communist era so Volkswagen eventually gained a bigger market.

    Far too expensive for the vast majority of UK wage earners. It also has far too many options which will make the end price much higher. What I have always liked about Skoda is that normally they only have three trim levels with a limited amount of options but with this car they seem to be copying Vauxhall with a massive selection of extras.

    This Is A SUV Family Vehicle, Need More Long Range Like More Than 700 Km. Maybe In Future Like In 2035 or Less, A New Kind Of Battary Which As Life of 12 Years And Much More Long Range More Than 700 Km For __Kv.
    At Present Is Only 533 Km For 82Kv. Yes, For Now This Ok. For A Family Member For 5 Member. As For The Back, Lot Of Space For Luggages. Compare Skoda Yeti, Both Top Speed Is 160 Km. Expect This Much Bigger Than Skoda Yeti.

    No but if you run the checklist for most new cars it passes on being overly large, too high off the road and WAY too expensive so many of the middle class will love it. Whether their brats will be happy on the school run is a different matter but their yummy mummy will not care as she gets one over on the Joneses...

    Absolutely ridiculous title. How can a car that costs £40k plus ever be the best family car ? Most families struggle to keep house and home together, never mind waste £40k on an expensive car, that has less than half the range and at twice the cost of a typical ice family car. Cloud cuckoo land !

    no, its still garbage...diesel is better choise at this moment... Range is pathetic...And where is electric box at home 7kwh?? If I got socket 3KWH, so I chage it 2 days?
