- I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about when to use different types of fishing line. So in this video, I explain the differences between monofilament, fluorocarbon and braided fishing line and talk about the different baits and techniques I use them for. Hope you enjoy!

Trilene Big Game shines in the water and in my opinion doesn't work very well for bass fishing, though it's excellent for other species such as catfish for example.. For years I have been using Berkeley Vanish and Fluoroshield copolymer, and they definitely work. But when I was a beginner, a long, long time ago, we only had monofilament lines. I still use Maxima chameleon.
Oh yes and another tip for those who don't know. If your budget is limited or whatever, you can get by with only two rods. One rigged with lighter mono/copolymer for topwater and shallow fishing with weightless plastics, and one with a good braid backing, to which you can attach a leader of fluorocarbon or heavier copolymer/mono (or just attach the lure straight to the braid when fishing discolored water with a big spinnerbait for example). Hope this helps out!

I use braid as a main tied to a mono with a swivel and had an amazing summer with no break offs. Thank you for the video 👏👏
I think you did a great job of explaining the concepts between different types of line. I agree that anglers starting out would save money and confusion by just using monofilament line. Line diameter is seldom explained. I think a video on how line diameter affects lure performance would be a great subject to explain in a future video.

I heard the bass pro excel floro is awesome for the price. Not king but better than average. Small diameter good castibility pretty abrasion reststemt.

Wow, really good. I grew up trout and smallmouth fishing very small streams and we always used 6lb mono. Then I started bass fishing and lost several so I jumped right to braid. This was great to understand when to use what, and why.
Excellent information thank you. I gave up on fishing flourocarbon main line on my spinning reels long ago and switched to using a flourocarbon leader on either mono or braid depending on the situation(I do a lot of ultralight fishing for wild trout and river smallies). I do like using flourocarbon main line on most of my bfs reels. Most people use braid for bfs but I like the slickness and the stiffness of flourocarbon on my bfs reels. Braided line is awesome for heavy duty freshwater applications like large mouth in heavy cover and our local mountain lake pike. The stretch in mono with a flourocarbon leader has helped me to not rip the hook from a trout's or a crappie's soft mouth.
Nice job! I think you did a great job explaining what the difference is in the three lines. As all three have there places that they shine. I almost only fish fluorocarbon and braid because that’s what I have on my rods. I will say if I can get away with fishing braided and catch fish I will always use it the stuff is absolutely tough and seems to almost last forever.
Really enjoying the knowledge your sharing on this channel,very informative👍 I'm kind of over the whole FC line thing after experiencing knot issues, especially with the cheaper lines. Last season I tried the co-polymer Trilene Sensation with excellent results, in a gin-clear gravel quarry, and when conditions exist- Crystal clear Smallmouth river. This year I'm going to experiment with Maxima mono, as I've always wanted to try it. Also wanted to share that of the various knots i tried for FC I had the most success with the Shaw Grigsby knot (leader to bait knot).
Great content like always ! It’s always fun to see what everyone is doing different. I use a lot of fluorocarbon due to fishing a lot of clear water here in Austin, Texas. However, when I go back to Louisiana to dirtier water, I switch immediately back to mono ! Like you mentioned, my treble hook bait landing ratio goes through the roof while using mono and it’s inexpensive !
Great info. I’m from Florida and travel a lot now that I retired, so I’m having I rethink rig strategy. Used mono most for of my life as I’m cheap and worked for a living! A few years ago I joined a local bass club and eventually went to braid. I’ve used my regular setup in NY ponds with chatterbaits and worms (Texas, wacky, nail tail) with decent success.
I now in AZ and rethinking my strategy since I’ll be going for stocker trout and anything else that swims in the lakes I have access to.
My baitcaster and regular spinner will keep braid (I do 15 pound at this time) and start tying on flouro leader. My latest ultralight current has Stren mono - it’s a candidate for flouro.

I prefer mono over any other. Trilene big game 12lb is my go to all around line it has been an extremely good line for me for years.
AMEN!!! I've been a die-hard bass fisherman ( and a lot of inshore fishing too ) here in central Florida since 1969. And I fish for bass today more than ever before. I mainly fish our famous Stick Marsh/Farm 13, and I have the pics & digital images to prove I've got four 12 lb'ers, thirteen 10's, seven 9's, and I literally lost count on all the 7 & 8's I've caught over the years. I was really heavy into braid, and then fluoro for quite some time. But after about 5 years, I noticed I was breaking off FAR too often using fluoro, even when setting the hook on small bass. Many youtubers are breaking off all too often on tiny bass too. It's always due to their "love of fluorocarbon". I was always making sure I re-tied fresh knots. Ya lose nearly 50% of the tested line strength at the knot with fluoro, right off the bat. I was using the best fluoro out there such as P-Line & Seaguar too. I eventually got so sick & tired of losing fish AND lures, that I swore off using fluoro ever again, and switched 100% back to Berkley Trilene Big Game mono in ALL different sizes from 12 lb to 25 lb test. Over 95% of my "line breakage issues" disappeared like a fart in the wind. Fluoro is only good for fishing deep, clear water. But even then, ya better be re-spooling often, even if ya fish half as often as I do. Fluoro is a member of the GLASS family, and it quickly develops tiny FRACTURES throughout the entire length of line off the spool to your lure or hook. Strong hook-sets, powerful or heavy fish, and trying to un-snag a lure from a tree or root immediately causes all those tiny fractures. That entire length of line off the spool is now RUINED......but the angler doesn't realize it yet. Then he loses a tiny fish on the hook-set due to breaking off, and assumes "there must've been a nick in the line somewhere"......Good mono holds up to shock & abrasion like a bulldog, and lasts a very long time too. I use TEN different rod & reel set-ups almost every time on the water. I will use at least 5 or more of them on any particular day. That gets VERY expensive if even a few are spooled with fluoro. The money I save on mono enables me to buy more lures too.
Big Game has never let me down! It may have some memory but it's worth it. I've caught numerous bass over 7 lbs on the 8 lb test! And the 12 lb test seems to be closer to 14-15 in strength. Good price point also.
@@lavernepeace3646 while I can't say I've caught more than just one 8lber I can say I have drug my line through enough gnarly stuff and rip rap to know big game does not fray easily. And I don't seem to have much memory issues but maybe it's because I hose it down with reel magic right after I reline and then periodically after that.
@@lavernepeace3646 Due to all the stumps, laydowns, eel grass & hydrilla all mixed together in shallow water, with the chance of a really big bass taking your lure at any time here on the Stick Marsh/Farm 13, I'm forced to used 17, 20, and 25 lb test Big Game mono. But I do get to use 12 lb for my hard jerk baits and any topwaters that aren't weedless. But even then, I gotta keep the fish up high to try & keep em from diving into that mess below.
@@howabouthetruth2157 It's good stuff I have used 17-20 for Sheepshead and the 25 for flipp'n. Do you remember the Stren Extra Strength mono? They stopped making it years ago......That was some good line also.

Man are we glad we found your channel. You the only one out there that makes us feel we can still fish without 14 rod and reel combinations with the same number of line type combos. When we last fished years ago there was only mono and we enjoyed fishing. Now we we get the idea we can’t fish unless we use floro or braid. I just don’t have that many rods! 😛

Lots of good CoPolys out there. Suffix, Pliine, Izorline. Flouro does stretch and it DOES NOT recover on a hard stretch. For most new anglers coPoly and Braid will be fine
This is a great video.....but also shows how that line is so subjective. I'm braid to mono on most baitcasters, braid to floro on spinning, Floro on cranks and mono on topwater and jerkbaits.

love what you say about the bass Honing in on the bait, and not so much the Line.
Also I would recommend using mono as a backing on your reels you are spooling braid or fluoro on. Just judge the main line size you are using in relation to how much back you need. I always put mono backing and spool the mainline so that it is more than what I typically can cast (maybe 10 yards more). That'll save a lot of money versus filling an entire reel with braid or fluoro that will never see the water

What line do you recommend mostly for light balsa original Rapalas( size 7 and 9 floaters ) and Shad Rap 7 and 9 in this colder water . I’ve used your tips to spool Reels with shoe ( Ha 😅) also the economic tips with Seaguar Invisx tied to braid, instead of a total spool where not much gets used. Monofilament after watching your videos has made a strong comeback- I prefer the Berkeley XT in Green, and Suffix Elite. Use mono on treble hook baits .
These bass tips also work with surf fishing for weakfish ( Speckled Sea Trout and slot Red Drum and Flounder)
I live in Duck North Carolina so we have OBX surf , many canals of freshwater and fire ponds of freshwater.
Just attended the fishing flea market at Chesapeake Convention Center. Huge turnout as wintertime is ending.
Noticed that those Quantum PT Models ( Blue baitcaster Reels popularized by Bill Dance and Shaw Grigsby) are really getting hard to find and the few I see were pretty worn and commanded $80 or more.

Great video! As most of us are non pro anglers the only info we really receive is from Pros on TV, magazines, etc.... these guys get paid by product plugging you see it all the time. Their job is Fishing and sales. They always use the "new greatest thing" on the shows simply to sell the product.

Hi Jonny, new sub here and going back over some of your older vids as I've been learning alot. One thing I'm curious about is why you don't consider copolymers. Yes, I know they are a bit more expensive, but even some of the pricier versions are less than the flouro I've been buying and in some cases less than the braid. Also, it seems like you would get the best of both worlds based on the applications you are using the mono for and perhaps even the flouro. PLine CXX is flouro coated for example and would seem like a great choice at a reasonable price point. It's also got great reviews on Tackle Warehouse from folks who have claimed to have been using it for years. I can see using braid for flipping and pitching the heavy stuff, but for the rest this seems to have enough stretch to have some give while not being "stretchy" like regular mono. Also doesn't seem to have the "fracturing" characteristic of Flouro and yet is just about as strong while having the benefit of low memory for casting yet is thinner than standard mono, again for better and more accurate casting. One person in his review said he had less sensitivity than when he used braid, yet in the Tackle Warehouse reviews a few mentioned they had no loss in sensitivity. I'm just curious as to why this isn't getting used more based on the research I've done which does include reviews, but not the kind of reviews that start out, "I casted out 5 times and it broke every time" kind of ridiculous garbage. Again, would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for the info brother, this sport is getting pretty expensive so all these tips can help save some money but still be using the best line for each situation.
My 2 favorite lines are Fireline and Hi-Seas Mono that is also Florocarbon coated and it's only about $7 at wal-mart
I’m late to the party here, but just watched this. I went back to mono too after trying flouro & braid. Less line management issues and knot issues. I grew up fishing mono in Florida, it could be I’m just more comfortable with it. I tie a knot w/mono and feel confident it will hold. I also like the stretch factor. 🎣

Same here, I use 10, 12 & 14 lb.
the truth is companies spread false lies to get people to buy more expensive stuff. mono works just fine. people are just ignorant and buy crap based on what they see on TV and what they read in fishing mags.

I find that tying knots on lures my often break knots while trying to sinch them down or tight. Yes I'm using spit when tying knots
Let me introduce myself and tell you a little about myself. I have tournament fished at all levels for over 40 years and have qualified for the BASS Masters Classic twice and turned down the invitation to fish on the Elites. I have watched several of your videos and there all on target and top notch. The reason that I wanted you to know that I have some credentials is that I fish Mono about 75% of the time. You don't have to justify or make excuses for fishing Mono, it is the best choice a lot of the time! I am a shallow water, reaction bite, junk type fisherman for the most part and fish seeing my line isn't a big consideration. 90% of the time with braid I tie direct the rest of the time it's braid to floro, drop shot for those silly brown bass that you have to fish for sometimes in the NE.
Good info. I mostly fish tidal water so not a lot of visibility. I can fish straight braid but I usually prefer braid to fluoro leader because I get better sink and braid tends to cut into wood IMO. Fluoro just slides across any pilings or lay downs without digging in.

Fish the Moment I use the Shin Fukae knot. See this link for a demonstration th-cam.com/video/KGp4zpCzizA/w-d-xo.html It is the best, most consistently reliable knot I have found to connect leader to braid. I usually have line failures before knot failures. A big plus is that I don't have issue with the knot going through rod guides on either baitcasters or spinning rods.
And always if you can do it buy in bulk spool. Nothing more frustrating and in my opinion a waste of money is when you can down on one of the small spools and it's not enough for a fill. That loss is multiplied everytime that happens not to mention you get a better price buying a bulk spool.
Mono man myself (suffix bulk spool) and I have nothing against the other lines, but for my application (spinnerbaits primarily stained water) it's what I prefer.

I recently switched back to using mostly monofilament again after not getting as many bites on spider wire. I think it was a visibility thing, only spider wire bites i got were in heavy lily pad cover. Thanks for explaining fluro applications :)

I used Maxima mono much of my life, and I switched to Trilene simply because it's made here, and I have to say that it works just as well as Maxima if not better for less money.

If you want to keep fishing line costs down use braid to leader and you won't have to keep respooling expensive flouro. you just change out your leader line every few trips. it has every advantage over mono or flouro. you feel everything, get better hooksets, all at a super low cost. I can't remember the last time I had to buy line. glad he covered this point. most people that make videos only talk about flouro or straight braid. so many people worry about the connection knot breaking(when i first started using this system i had failures, it worried me but after a while i mastered the knot i use and haven't had failure since then)or the knot going through the line guide but it literally doesn't affect the knot at all and if you aren't using those tiny micro guides the knot will cast just as well as a straight line. i have several rods with semi micro guides(lews tp1, new daiwa tatula rod) and 50lb braid to 20lb red label goes through without a problem(9 loop blood knot, check out tacticalbassin's knot video).
if you're running daiwa t wing setups this won't work tho. it sucks considering the whole idea is that line will go through easier and it's a huge opening but for some reason tiny circles are better than that marketing tool(it doesn't get you any distance lol).
TL;DR braid to leader is the best system to use(if you look at all the benefits it is a fact)and it's dirt cheap.
Trilene Big Game works fine for me where I fish. I’ve been catching bass for over 50 years on mono. I tried braid & fluorocarbon and had line & knot issues.

I use each line for certain situations. Floro for making lures dive deeper/bottom, braid for punching or frogs, mono for topwater.
I dont fully believe in the invisible claim. Just last week I caught all my bass on straight yellow braid in 10+feet water clarity.

@@FishtheMoment easy to test. 2 guys fishing same baits but on different lines. Each time a bass is caught switch rods to take the anglers abilities out of the equation to give each line a fair shot.
Great channel. A question: If fish are suspicious of line type/colour, what do they think of a lure that has 2 or 3 treble hooks hanging from it?
Mono is great. Have been using it for over thirty years with no problems..
I use straight braid for 99% of applications. Sometimes with a fluorocarbon leader, but usually not, since I'm usually fishing heavily stained water, and I'm not terribly worried about line visibility spooking fish. The one time I might really want a fluoro leader is when I'm trying to fish really deep (which is rare for me, TBH) to take advantage of the point that fluoro sinks.
But lately I've been experimenting with the Berkley Firewire Crystal, which is a *fused* (as opposed to *braided*) super-line. If you believe the hype, it's nearly invisible in the water, just like fluoro, but it still has the strength/diameter ratio close to braid. So far I'm pretty impressed with this stuff and it may become my new standard for most situations.
I don't really advocate running straight fluoro, at least not on spinning reels. I've always found the stuff to be too stiff with too much memory, and prone to tangling and getting fouled up.
The seaguar red label is pretty great for the price. You can grab a spool at Wal Mart for 11 or 12 bucks.
Braid -to-mono is what I use on spinning gear. I use moss green braid (blends in nicely) and mono for a little stretch and abrasion resistance compared to floro and braid.
Berkley Big Game has done great for me as a leader when using live bait. Up to 18lb Striper and 39lb Blue Cat so far using the 30lb test. Lots of nice fish as well using the 10lb as a leader when fishing baits free.

Just my .02¢ here, you can always adjust the spool drag to accommodate for the fish surging at the boat and keep from bending hooks or pulling out at the boat. Hold spool with finger when setting hook then deal with a little slip all the way to the boat.

I don't use mono much anymore except as a leader in some scenarios. a great deal of my fishing happens from a kayak so its mostly about the stretch. I have problems with my hooklets in the kayak when using straight mono. its possible, you just have to swing for the fences. I throw topwater treble hook baits on braid with 2-3 ft of braid and soften my rod tip just a touch. I throw most of my moving baits on braid, braid with a leader, or straight flourocarbon. just something to add for the kayak anglers out there from my personal experience. just the kayak moving more absorbs more of the impact, and it reduces stretch for better hookups when using braid or fluoro
I dont understand that if they study the bait they see the 3 hooks and know it's not normal does it really matter that much?
Yup.. I go straight flor. On my baitcasters too. Learned that some time back after testing it out myself. Those knots just don't hold up for some reason. My main braid now is suffix 65pd. And Berkley 20 pd. Flor. Totally agree with your set up.
James Hall fishing I agree, I don't like leaders sure they are fine for fly fishing, but when jacking bass they eventually fail at least for me, usually at the worst time as well.
Awesome instructional video. Trying to get into fishing after only going a handful of times as a kid, took my wife and young boys into walmart and dicks to get everybody a beginner setup and I was lost on all the options.
I think you need to fix that treble hook split ring on that jerkbait, looks like its messed up. Good video Johnny, a lot of guys here in Ky use Big game too. I'm not a fan of floro myself but see a few applications it can be a good leader.
When I was “new” to baitcasters. I recommend practicing and getting more comfortable on monofilament. Its cheap and easy to replace. I caught a couple of big bass on texas rigs on 17lb trilene big game mono. After you get “comfortable” dump it.

Love your videos! I found one exception to your cheap vs expensive fluorocarbon. Seaguar Red Label. You can find this from $11.99 - $14.99 for 200yrd. At least up to 15#, this stuff is strong and castable. Once you get to 20# it is a little stiff, but manageable once you have caught a few on it. Just my my opinion. Have you tried red label?

Good job young man. However on really deep cranks, I think braid is the best as the thin diameter cuts the water much easier.
