Me, too. I'm just over 50 and have come to realize (and love) that there's so much more to fishing than I thought as a boy. It's engaging, mentally stimulating, and a beautiful activity...most of the time!
I've never fished in my entire life and I'm 33. I'm only here trying to pick up some tips as I'm going to the beach tomorrow to try it. No rod. Just a stick, some lines, stone sinkers, hooks, a net, basket and home made bait. I'll see how it goes
Biggest mistake I made: not getting my fishing license. Not only because of the hefty fine I received 😅, but because of where the money goes. IDK what it’s like in other states, but where I’m at, all the money goes to preservation. I treat it like spending a couple bucks to say thank you to the lake
Major mistakes I've made in the Greater Los Angeles Area where I was born and raised: Mistake #1 -- Was never taught how to properly hold a fish. I was scared off from fishing as a kid because of too many random jabs, pokes, and stabs. At 4:46 in your video you show how to hold a fish safely and properly. Fish-gripping tools also gave me some confidence until I learned how to safely handle different fish species. Mistake #2 -- When I started fishing seriously four years ago at 32 years of age, I spent too much time at unstocked city lakes and ponds and blamed myself for the lack of fish. Can't catch fish where there are no fish! 😅 Eventually learned to read the DF&G stocking reports. Mistake #3 -- Got the itch to fish and spent a lot of money on gear without realizing what I truly needed. Came out okay overall but definitely wasted at least $600 on equipment that's better off renting. Mistake #4 -- Lived by the ocean my whole life but didn't go offshore fishing until my mid 30's. Wrestlin' some of these bigger fish would be much easier if I was a younger man! 😂
I've also got a tip for beginning fishermen. It's a good idea to use line that is tested for a lesser weight than your rod. That way, if you catch a chunker and the only way this fight will end is with something breaking, you spare the rod and take it out on the cheaper line instead.
Good tip. If heavier line is being used, you could set the drag light enough to spare the rod, but there's really no reason to have the heavy line if you can't use it to its potential anyway.
I'm 15 and just started to get in to fishing all most every one i know does not like going fishing and your channel helped me learn so much keep up the great work man
My grandfather used to take me fishing every weekend when i was a kid for years and years. Havent been fishing since I was a kid and wanted to get back into it in memory of him. Thanks for all these videos and I really do mean it. It has allowed me to pick fishing back up without my grandfathers help and know how. I dont know what happens after we die but I hope he's somewhere looking down proud that I'm carrying on our family traditions without him. All thanks to you and people like you boss
Another great video! I have definitely made all these mistakes myself. It never hurts at the end of a fishing day to take some time to reflect on what worked and didn't work that day. This will help with recognizing fish behavior patterns, seasonal locations, and picking the right tackle for the conditions.
SUPER helpful!! I used to fish with my pop but havent since i was a teenager. Now i have my own kids asking to fish so this is EXCELLENT for those of us dusting off our tackle boxes and getting back out there. Thank you!!!!
I always used a black rubber worm in the weedy areas . I still do 40 + years later . I carry such a variety of tackle on my kayak that I hardly get skunked . But , even if you get skunked , atleast you got out there and had some fun.
Thank you so much for this channel. Just getting back into fishing after many years and these videos are straight to the point and just helpful. Some TH-cam anglers really love to hear their own voices. You really get to the meat of it and don’t drag it unnecessarily. I’ve downloaded a bunch of your videos via the app for when I’m out on the water.
Thanks nat for this video, and you also point out even if you’re out there and dont get anything you gain more experience and get to do something you enjoy! I wish you a great fishing life
Thanks! I'm turning 30, have 1 child and getting a new born on the way. I want to build on something I can do with my kids and this seems like a awesome video to start fishing again. Can't wait!
Cool. Check out this quick video with tips on teaching a kid how to fish. It will be a few years before they can handle a rod well but both of my kids caught their first fish at age 3. th-cam.com/video/34lZI0xtNi4/w-d-xo.html
Just wanted to say I absolutely love your channel and you are my go-to for all things fishing. Your videos are to-the-point and packed with so much good information - I'm an absolute beginner and you've taught me everything I now know about fishing. God bless you and your family!
Hey Nat, Would love for you to do a guide on setting the hook. I'm a beginner and am rather frustrated at how many hooks I've had that are poor quality (fish is barely on) and cases where the hook is unremovable. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion. In most cases, it's best to set the hook right away, but you'll want to wait a couple of seconds with topwater lures like frogs. Sometimes a fish will suck a bait down immediately, and some deep hooks are inevitable. This problem is the worst with live bait because they may be chewing on your bait for quite a while before you get any indication that a fish has your bait.
Definitely. I'm headed out tomorrow but we're expecting 91*F and sunny with no wind. Could be a brutal day but I'll be out there at sunrise to beat the heat.
im 26 and live in the Philippines, but currently staying at saudi arabia for work and started to pick up fishing as a hobby.. id like to know more about fishing, especially knowing the proper baits to use..
@@FishingwithNat so I was mostly using power bait on a treble hook and I recently have been trying a spinner bait. I had no idea what I was fishing for before, but now I know it's usually trout and catfish in the lakes over here
@@Space-Fonzo-7 When you say power bait, do you mean the soft stuff you mush around a hook? (Powerbait is a whole line of Berkley products). If you want to catch catfish, I'd recommend trying a nightcrawler or a piece of cheese on a single hook with a sinker. Those are the easiest ways to catch a catfish. Trout like inline spinners or small worms. Keep in mind that trout like cooler water, so they are often deep in lakes in the summertime (15ft+), especially during the daytime.
just got into fishing and spent like 1 hour getting the line on the reel then spent 1 hour 30 minutes on a canal I knew there were fish but using badly tied knots with a worm on just 1 sinker and using the same lure for 1 hour too, this helps a lot.
This is a great video and I think this should be a regular series because there are so many things to learn that I wanted to give up many times in the beginning and I'm still in the beginning after only fishing for a year
I made a couple of videos examining the arguments on both sides of this. th-cam.com/video/RM-mmBS_yO4/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/jnWR7ZtpeWg/w-d-xo.html I use snaps and snap swivels in some situations, and direct-tie in others.
One of the big mistakes I made, was buying too much fishing gear at once. When I got back into it, I spent hundreds of dollars on gear that I ended up not using. I stuck to only the a few basic lures and some basic terminal tackle. I suggest stick to the basic lures, like a crankbait, plastic worms, inline spinner and a topwater. once you understand how they work, you can expand and find out what works in your area.
Don't forget different lures require different techniques. Also having the proper gear for the technique is important. Also different fish require different lures ect. However as a bass fisherman I decided to use a bass bait for fishing walleye and crushed it. I used that particular bait the whole trip. And the "walleye guys" couldn't belive I was catching walleye with a 5/0 hook. Not to mention I caught alot of quality fish 17 to 22 inches or so with biggest being 24 1/2 inched winning me the pool we had going for biggest walleye.
Just came home from a 7 hour fishing trip trying to get a decent sized trout from a spot I’ve heard has tons of big ones. ..all I got was one that was smaller than my hand, lol. At least the video made me feel better about it.
Pointing your rod tip at your lure is good one but in lakes and ocean. In shallow waters, river and rapid moving water it won't always work. Point is to make the lure swim naturally and that means directing it over rocks, plants etc. The lure can also sink too much if you point the rod tip at the lure.
Right. Pointing the rod tip at the lure was actually one of my mistakes. It is much better to keep the rod at an angle to the line so you can swim it toward or away from something, twitch it, etc., and it takes some stress/shock away from your line and redirects it to your rod.
@@FishingwithNat oooh it was a mistake? Oh yeah sorry i tought you said to do it. I missed it completely and i blaim me for being a bit slow and not being a native english speaker😂 anyways i have noticed that there is a point in fishing in rapid moving water where you want to make spinner surface with the current. Or atleast try that too. Learned it from fly fishing and it works for spinners etc. Mimics a small bug or fish surfacing. Sometimes i get strikes that way too Hey and i really enjoy these tips! They are short and informative even for more experienced folk👍 thank you for your effort🙏
Uni is not stronger at all. I've broken hooks on snags with a Palomar. Any double line knot will be superior to a single line through the eye knot. I've recently switched to double pitzen knot for floro or mono leaders. The problem with floro is the limited number of knots you can tie. You will more often than not break off on a Hookset. Palomar is still great for mono or braid.
Hey nat. Im 29 and just picked up the hobby after not fishing since i was a kid. Im struggling to know what lures to use and where to fish. Im in wisconsin myself. Id love some pointers on what to use where

Great video, I love the format of these videos, I frequently binge them. Can you do a video on good lures for rivers or some type of video like that? Thanks for the great content.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have been meaning to do a video about how to fish a river and show some of my favorite baits for rivers. One of these days!
Spinnerbaits are nice if the vegetation isn't too thick. If it's really thick, I go right to frogs of various styles. Regular frogs over the super heavy stuff, and kicking frogs like a Little Bigfoot if there's a bunch of open water around too. You can check out our Topwater Frog Fishing Tips video for more recommendations and explanation on frog fishing techniques th-cam.com/video/czTtqyDKDcA/w-d-xo.html
At the age 13 I did go to river on bicycle . Now I am 60 will go in my car with barbeque, sandwiches, fruits etc.again I want to try this after a gap of 47 years . Purchased all relevant things line, lure, sticks,
Went fishing for my first time today and got skunked 😂 spent the whole time trying to learn to cast and tie my bait lol. So much vegetation in the lake going to try a Texas rig next to see if I have any luck
Yeah sometimes the only thing you can throw is a Texas rig or weedless frog. If there's some room over the top of the plants, you can throw an inline spinner or a shallow-running crankbait and usually have good success.
@@FishingwithNat Caught my first small mouth bass last night with a basic hook and worm! Thanks for all your help, your videos have given me a lot of confidence

Agreed. Some baits you see being used will be effective anywhere. Others are being shown to you simply because the person is sponsored and they are trying to sell lures/line/rods/whatever to you. You won't see me doing that. I'll recommend things but it's only because I am seriously impressed by something.
Hello nat Have you heard of the Luc Coppens knot ? I don't think you've ever tested this particular knot it would be pretty interesting to see how it holds up. It looks easy to use but also im curious as how strong it is.
Fishing knot thing is so important, landed the biggest fish we ever caught in that area and he slid right off because of the way I tied my hook on, I was so devastated 😅
@@ibrahimalshikar1383 Those are usually good baits, so I would guess it's your retrieve or technique. Try to make the bait look as lifelike as possible.
Yes, pros do get skunked, There was a tournament earlier this year at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and on the final day one third of the competitors failed to catch a single fish.
Hello, I go up to Northern Wisconsin in June every year and keep getting skunked every trip. Any good lures, tips or tricks to use the first week of June in order to catch bass and walleye. Thanks!
Bass will be starting to move up shallow by then. I have good luck with crankbaits on deep edges of vegetation, or if you're fishing during a sunny day, you can sometimes find them in just a few feet of water hanging around vegetation or brush. Frogs work sometimes in that situation, depending on how warm the water is. This year has been a very weird winter, so even central Wisconsin lakes have just a few inches of ice on them. Lakes might warm up quickly this spring.
One really useful tip is to carry a small towel with you, to help hold fish. It makes it easier for you, and safer for the fish as well. Much less chance of getting spiked.
fishing for 50yrs.... I would add,,,, 1 learn proper hook set never trust a fish to hook himself. 2 buy good line, check it often for abrasions in rocky water and don't wait too long to change it. 3 get to know your drag....learn to set it as soon as you get on the water, specifically for that trip and fish type and test line. Too tight, a big fish could break line. Too loose, drag slips and weak hook set. Also, the more line the fish has the less control you have. 4 sharpen hooks...check them, even if new, especially after a snag . If bent sometimes you can bend them back but if the angle of the gap is off, use a new hook. A hook should be ''sticky sharp'' able to hang off your fingertip without stabbing your finger.5 NEVER grab the line when landing a fish/ don't lift a big fish with your pole.5 walk quietly around the pond, Fish feel vibrations especially in wet soil. Never arrive and rush to the water. Big fish hunt the shallows. Don't scare them away. Think of how a blue herring or a crane bird fishes. 6 never think one lure is magic, study the area and try to make an informed lure decision. Forget what worked yesterday. 7 NEVER listen when people say' 'There's no fish in that pond'' Thats their excuse for being bad fisherman. Find out yourself, even small places can have 1 really big fish and many little ones. 8 Don't wimp out in bad weather... dress for it. But stick it out If the fish are biting, keep fishing. Tomorrow might be a slow day. 8 Fighting a fish? Rod tip up. Constant pressure on the fish. Slack line loses fish and never try to horse a big fish. fight it and tire it out the last part by the net will go smoother 8 ALWAYS remember it is always worth a shot, even if you got skunked', you could catch the biggest fish of your life at anytime.
with the bad knots that knot he showed is not bad if you use 6 full twists i was catching trout and salmon in maine with a 3.3 lb leader using that knot
I’m struggling to find where bass and pike are hanging out. The only place I can find them is only top water accessible and I wanna get one to hit the Rat L Trap
Pull that RatL Trap along the deep edge of vegetation. It won't get snagged on plants there but fish hiding in the plants can dart out and grab it. Also look for rocky/sandy areas where you can bounce it right off the bottom.
I have a trout set up for streams and it’s easy to catch but once I throw a from or fake worm on the same setup for bass I get skunked all day. Should I change my set up and if so what do you recommend
Are you fishing a stream for bass or moving to a different spot? Smallmouth or largemouth (or another species)? Check out our frog fishing tips video for lots of information on that technique: th-cam.com/video/czTtqyDKDcA/w-d-xo.html
@@Santanabat The frog should be tossed along the edge of vegetation or right in the middle of it. Watch the frog fishing video for more tips on that technique. How are you rigging the plastic worm? Texas rig? Wacky worm?
Tried fishing for the first time just a hour or two ago. Didnt even fish. Kinda set up my hook and bobber and everything the best i could had bait on it and as i casted all my line tangled. Couldnt get it untangled. Just picked everything up and left. Not a fun time and not sure if i even want to try again. Only 23 btw and no one taught me anything.
Were you using an old rod/reel that someone gave to you? I wonder if the line was sitting on the spool for years. If so, it's likely that it had tons of coils in it and that made it very hard to cast (but easy to tangle)
@@FishingwithNat no just got a 70$ telescopic rod and tried doing everything myself. Even putting the line on. I think next time i might just go somewhere to get it rigged and spooled so maybe i have a better time.
I'd suggest trying a soft plastic swimbait on a jig. It's a reliable lure to catch all kinds of things and there really isn't a wrong way to use it. Check out this 4 minute video with tips on using that type of lure. th-cam.com/video/x47vZTN90f0/w-d-xo.html I also made this video on how to successfully fish with live worms. It might be helpful to you. th-cam.com/video/VMvjvbvCap0/w-d-xo.html Good luck!
I fished a lot as a teenager, then life got busy and I got even busier and fishing ceased to be something I did. Decades later, following a few false starts, I've gotten back into it but sometimes I'm not sure I should have. For one thing, when did fishing get so damn complicated? [WARNING: Long post! Might need sandwiches and something to drink before reading.😮] Back then it was far simpler. Tie a fishermen's eight, 12" leader, swivel, lead sinker, hook, bait and you're good to go. Never knew anything about the league of knots, fishing line mutations, soft and hard non-gender specific bait, the value of being in drag, that the size, stiffness and even weight of your shaft actually matters as does knowing how to use it, or this anti-heavy view of the fishing community. When I was fishing I caught Brim, Flathead, Catfish - oh so many Catfish - Toad fish, Rays, Taylor, Jewfish and a few mysteries to boot. I fished a heavy line, used wire traces, prawns, squid but had the most consistent success with garden worms and slices of bread returned to its origins - I give one of the best bread massages known to man. No exotic scents where too much of good thing is a bad thing, except when it's not enough of a good thing that it's a bad thing, but when it's both or neither then...wait, where was I going with this? Anyway, gel, oil, powdered or pre-done had no idea they even existed. Burley was a thing, of course, but never bothered with it. Why would I when I was catching fish? Pretty much exclusively used an Alvey side caster, egg-beaters were a bit exotic and too complicated to interest me. Rarely had line tangles, only lost fish due to a broken lines a handful of times. No net, just lifted them up out of the water. So what the hell happened to fishing while I was away? Even my relationships with my ex-girlfriends weren't this complex. The advice in the local fishing shops is contradictory and has yet to result in any success. I'd rather go window shopping with a woman than face the endless overwhelming variety of fishing products, all guaranteed to enable you to catch huge amounts of the biggest fish possible. Frankly, I'm amazed that the hook and line industry hasn't gone out of business, seeing as some of these products give the impression that using them will cause the fish to practically jump into your lap. Though, of course, there is always the disclaimer that you have to know how to use the product properly. At the start of my return to fishing, inspired by a TH-cam video of course, I bought a used kayak and have now been on a dozen or so fishing trips, all river. First time out caught two flathead using a soft plastic lure. That was pretty cool as I'd never used one before. One Flathead slipped the hook, bounced and summersaulted out of the kayak for a perfect ten landing in the water. The other, legal size, I got to eat. However, it's been all down hill since then. At first it was zero bites, tangled lines, a couple of capsizes, two drowned phones and various lost and or damaged gear. Last night made my latest offering to the fishing gods, another fishing rod and reel, for a current total record of four, though at least this fishing trip I actually did catch fish, three good sized ones. The first, the line broke at the last moment just as I got it to the surface next to the kayak. Second time, same thing. Thing is, I'd brought everything but forgotten the landing net. Having had enough of this, I decided to go back for the net. However, the third fish didn't make it to the boat, due to a line tangle. Never have I had so many of them in one night. No idea why it was the case, but the majority were so bad I had to cut the line and start again. On this occasion, it was when I was in the process of tying a double uni that I realized it was on the line. Next thing I knew it had pulled it out of my hand and that was that. Kept going for a few more hours but no more strikes. I had launched at around 2pm and quite frankly would have kept going but finally gave up and returned to shore at about 3am, after my battery decided it was too tired to keep going - wimp. There were positives. I caught three fish. Discovered and solved a recent issue with the kayak 'rudder' pedals sticking. Had my first experience of bio-luminance, underwater lightening and seeing a large fish jump about three feet out of the water leaving a pool of fire behind it, glowing with witches fire and trailing behind it like a rainbow before plunging back into the water to create a new fire pool. The serene glass like surface of the river and the moon reflecting of the ocean. Plus the opportunity to test my will against the elements, in particular the long paddle back when the battery gave up - again, seriously, what an utter wimp. If you've read this far, thank you for taking the time to work your way through this unintentionally long post. I appreciate this opportunity to vent, to share with those whom I'm sure will understand and sympathize with my struggles with fishing. In part, however, this is a response to the comment about everyone getting skunked from time to time. I might be wrong, although I'm probably not, that there are some of us who experience this at Olympic levels on a regular basis. In my case, perhaps it's because I have Adult ADHD, Bipolar 2 and have been battling chronic insomnia for the past eight or so years. Or maybe I'm simply a naturally clumsy man or one of those people who should not be fishing in the first place. It might even be that I've been cursed by one or all of those ex-girlfriends I previously mentioned. Whatever the case, I just want someone to know how insane my fishing trips always are - heads up, I haven't shared the half of it in this post. Nonetheless, I haven't given up, at least not yet. Last night was actually an encouragement. They were big fish and it's the first time I've trolled and had success doing so. Even as I write this I feel the strong desire to get back out there and take another crack at it. Actually, I'd have gone back out today except for the fact that I've a killer migraine, need way more sleep, have essays to grade and tomorrow it's back to work. But next weekend, or failing that at least the one after, I'll be heading out to potentially sacrifice another rod and reel. Worth it I reckon for the experience and the adventures to come. In fact, currently keeping my eye out for a good second-hand 4.5 meter tinny. There's a few islands I'd like to camp out on before the year is out, not only to fish but for other reasons also. My best to all my fellow hunters. May your lines be strong, hooks ever sharp and your catches satisfying to the max. I almost never get skunked when I go fishing. But that's because the first thing I ever do when I go fishing is break out my tiny flies and go micro fishing.
#0.1 Respect the hooks! I mean that especially when you have hooked a fish and are trying to get them off be very careful. Once the hook / hooks are still on fish mouth the fish can do sudden movement and you definitely don't want another hook to bite your hand. Imagine a wild pike on the net with one hook on its lip and one on your thumb. Pliers are your friend. And always have cutters with you that you can get the hook cut that has buried on to you...
I learned this the hard way with a 20lb king salmon on one treble hook and the other in my thumb. It kept thrashing around until it broke the hook. Pliers are definitely your friend.
If you had to choose one rod/reel set up for a beginner bass angler what make/models would you suggest? All the 'pros' say to get a good 65# braided line which I did, but now I'm looking for the R&R
For a beginner bass angler, I would actually suggest going after smaller bass first with a medium-light or medium power rod and a spinning reel with 15-20lb braid. 65# is for pitching jigs into heavy matted vegetation and yanking 8lb+ bass out. That's not really a technique for beginners, in my opinion. Around here, a 5-6lb bass is really nice, so I tend to stick with 30# or less for almost everything. I'll use a medium power rod with 15-20lb braid for smaller fish, or a medium-heavy and 30# for bigger fish and frogs. I'll occasionally go up to 50# for flipping into heavy vegetation. I really like my Ugly Stik Carbon spinning rods with Diawa Regal LT reels. Not too expensive but they are excellent.
@@FishingwithNatalso I'll add not all braid is the same. 4 carrier braid is good for cutting through weeds where 8 or more carrier braid is supple and easier to cast lighter lures on. Also if you fish with good populations of toothy fish ( walleye pike bowfin ect.) Braid will make you break a rod lol. Learn a good line to line tie and tie on some good leader (mono or floro). Braid is superior when it comes to sensitivity (rod also plays a big role in this) as well as durability when it comes to season to season use. Floro degrades when exposed to UV light aka the sun. Mono also "dries out" making it weak. Braid is on all my rods in various #test but not more than 30#. I've pulled my boats with 15 to 20 lb test no problem when snagged to get to the snag. Even with 10lb floro leaders on. Quality line is important. Don't cheap out on the line. However that's a rule of thumb but there are exceptions. Berkley big game is decent line for the money and cheap enough for experimenting knots. You won't wince when you accidentally cut the main line instead of a tag end unlike expensive floro.

This comments a year old but this is the exact same scenario I'm in right now just though that was kinda funny how's fishing been for you?
Same. Just turned 15 3 days ago and going fishing today. It’s hard to find people with similar interests in this day and age
I'm pretty new to fishing, only been casting for a year, and this channel has given me so much great advice
Thanks for the kind words. More videos to come!
I'm glad my videos have been helpful to you! Make Grandpa proud and catch a big one!
Sounds very similar to me right now
same reason I started fishing again at 42 😊
Another great video! I have definitely made all these mistakes myself. It never hurts at the end of a fishing day to take some time to reflect on what worked and didn't work that day. This will help with recognizing fish behavior patterns, seasonal locations, and picking the right tackle for the conditions.
Agree 100%
SUPER helpful!! I used to fish with my pop but havent since i was a teenager. Now i have my own kids asking to fish so this is EXCELLENT for those of us dusting off our tackle boxes and getting back out there. Thank you!!!!
Glad to help!
I always used a black rubber worm in the weedy areas . I still do 40 + years later .
I carry such a variety of tackle on my kayak that I hardly get skunked . But , even if you get skunked , atleast you got out there and had some fun.
Well said. And yes, sometimes the old classics are all you need to put lots of fish in the kayak!
Thanks. I don't like watching videos full of fluff and nonsense, so I don't make my own videos like that. I appreciate the comment.

Good luck - I hope you don't go hungry!
Thanks nat for this video, and you also point out even if you’re out there and dont get anything you gain more experience and get to do something you enjoy! I wish you a great fishing life
Absolutely. With every mistake comes a free lesson.
Nat. This is the best channel for all your fishing needs. Thank you for your knowledge and contents brother!
Thank you! More to come...
Just wanted to say I absolutely love your channel and you are my go-to for all things fishing. Your videos are to-the-point and packed with so much good information - I'm an absolute beginner and you've taught me everything I now know about fishing. God bless you and your family!
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to leave this feedback. 🙂
Hey Nat,
Would love for you to do a guide on setting the hook.
I'm a noob at fishing I love the tips! they should help me be a better angler.i really appreciate it
Excellent. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Good luck fishing!
Just picked up fishing here in Texas, excited to learn with your vidoes and my own experiences!
Excellent - welcome and good luck!
Great video! I have started paying attention to weather patterns as well. Thank you for the great content!!
I've been fishing every few months for the last 4 years and haven't caught anything yet lol I feel like these tips will definitely help me out!
What have you been fishing with? Are you trying to catch a particular species?
@@FishingwithNat yes that's the bait I was using. Thank you I'm going to take these tips with me to the lake tomorrow!
@@Space-Fonzo-7 I am excited to hear how it goes!
just got into fishing and spent like 1 hour getting the line on the reel then spent 1 hour 30 minutes on a canal I knew there were fish but using badly tied knots with a worm on just 1 sinker and using the same lure for 1 hour too, this helps a lot.
Glad to hear it was helpful to you!
Got skunked today, this made me feel better. Thanks.
It happens to the best of us!
“i thought a bass would magically appear in my area” that actually tickled me😂
It's true. Glad you enjoyed that comment. 🙂
Awesome.
I am retired, and this is the fishing video I needed
Perfect. Thanks for the feedback!
I can relate to so many of these!
I have so much to learn and improve on.
Most anglers can! Hopefully many people who watch the video can learn from these mistakes instead of having to learn them the hard way!
This is a great video and I think this should be a regular series because there are so many things to learn that I wanted to give up many times in the beginning and I'm still in the beginning after only fishing for a year
I certainly have made other mistakes and may very well create a Part 2 to this video
@@FishingwithNat I would love that :) Your channel is awesome and a great resource for all fishermen
@@GregTurismo Thank you
bad knots are always a common mistake in fishing
Definitely. A lot of lures and fish are lost because of bad knots.
This is very true, friend and I lost a few lures in a single day because of this specific knot.
@@jonathanluis4966 You're not the only one. Learning to tie a good knot is so important.
That moment watching your lure flying free into the water independent of your line.
What’s your opinion on snaps and snap swivels?do they make fish less likely to bite?
I made a couple of videos examining the arguments on both sides of this. th-cam.com/video/RM-mmBS_yO4/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/jnWR7ZtpeWg/w-d-xo.html
I use snaps and snap swivels in some situations, and direct-tie in others.
Absolutely. Well said.
I love all of your videos. They provide a lot of good insight.
Thanks

@@FishingwithNat Hell yeah bro
Just came home from a 7 hour fishing trip trying to get a decent sized trout from a spot I’ve heard has tons of big ones.
..all I got was one that was smaller than my hand, lol. At least the video made me feel better about it.
At least you gained a lot of experience that will help you get that big one someday!
Sometimes i get strikes that way too
Hey and i really enjoy these tips! They are short and informative even for more experienced folk👍 thank you for your effort🙏
@@bobthebuilder2922 Thank you. Yes, I agree - bouncing a spinner at the surface can trigger strikes sometimes!
My favorite go-to knot for fishing has to be the Palomar knot, but the Uni knot is arguably stronger, so I might have to switch lol
Palomar is good. I use the modified Uni the most these days.
Thanks for the video man, cant relate more having recently lost lures due to bad fg knot.
We've all been there. Thanks for the comment.
Stumbled across your channel… Honestly from what I’ve seen so far .. it’s Amazing 👍👍. I’m a subscriber now.

Thanks. I appreciate your comments!
Great video Nat ( as always) , so can you tell us from your experience which lure is good for weedy areas?
Spinnerbaits are nice if the vegetation isn't too thick. If it's really thick, I go right to frogs of various styles. Regular frogs over the super heavy stuff, and kicking frogs like a Little Bigfoot if there's a bunch of open water around too. You can check out our Topwater Frog Fishing Tips video for more recommendations and explanation on frog fishing techniques th-cam.com/video/czTtqyDKDcA/w-d-xo.html

Buying lure you see youtuber use is a no no, talk to local angler and tackle shop for sure will have you so much money
Agreed. Some baits you see being used will be effective anywhere. Others are being shown to you simply because the person is sponsored and they are trying to sell lures/line/rods/whatever to you. You won't see me doing that. I'll recommend things but it's only because I am seriously impressed by something.
I buy based on I would try to eat if I was a fish
Hello nat
Have you heard of the Luc Coppens knot ?

Yep. Hello from WI!
Yes, pros do get skunked, There was a tournament earlier this year at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and on the final day one third of the competitors failed to catch a single fish.
They don't want you to believe that, but they get skunked sometimes just like everyone else.
Could’ve used this video two years ago. Solid video though, great advice.
Thanks - I appreciate it.
The brown trout was a monster!!!
I was beyond excited about that one. Such a blast on a light power rod and 6# line in the kayak too.
Hello,
I go up to Northern Wisconsin in June every year and keep getting skunked every trip.
If you do that, you'll want to keep the towel wet. A dry towel could remove a lot of slime and cause the fish to be more prone to infections.
1:46 Yeah, I'm guilty of this. Must be because there was a 12lb bluegill that magically appeared instead.
That would be sweet.
Fishing is always fun even if you get skunked
I agree!
I fished for the 1st time yesterday, it was a beautiful experience, I had to man up and hook the worm and or hold a fish 😂
Awesome. Hooking a worm and holding a fish isn't so bad!
fishing for 50yrs....
Good tips - thanks for adding to the discussion.

where do you buy frog baits and how much are they
These are a couple of my favorites: alnk.to/5FattKE and amzn.to/3RqHodf
with the bad knots that knot he showed is not bad if you use 6 full twists i was catching trout and salmon in maine with a 3.3 lb leader using that knot
That was basically a very lazy fisherman's knot (improved clinch). If you tie it correctly, the knot is very good.
This is freaking awesome!!!!!
Thanks
I’m struggling to find where bass and pike are hanging out. The only place I can find them is only top water accessible and I wanna get one to hit the Rat L Trap
Pull that RatL Trap along the deep edge of vegetation. It won't get snagged on plants there but fish hiding in the plants can dart out and grab it. Also look for rocky/sandy areas where you can bounce it right off the bottom.
@@FishingwithNat Thank you!

Might need sandwiches and something to drink before reading.😮]
Back then it was far simpler.

If you're targeting a single species, it happens. If you're targeting multiple species, you should be able to catch something in a few hours' time.
Great video ❤
Thanks
Hey you're from Wisco too!
You betcha.
bro this is gem
Glad you liked it - thanks for the comment.
I’m going on a fishing trip with my program Thursday and I’m a little nervous I’m gonna hold the rod wrong . I don’t wanna mess up my Hand
Check out my How to Cast videos to see how to hold and cast each type of reel: Spinning reel th-cam.com/video/yoauPIoxT5E/w-d-xo.html ; Spincast reel th-cam.com/video/cHxF6aZSrIw/w-d-xo.html ; Baitcast reel th-cam.com/video/cHxF6aZSrIw/w-d-xo.html
Where were you in your “getting bummed by a skunk” part of the video?
On the Wisconsin River in central WI
I almost never get skunked when I go fishing.
But that's because the first thing I ever do when I go fishing is break out my tiny flies and go micro fishing.
That's a good way to do it!
@@FishingwithNat Yup! I usually always have some micro and super UL stuff. Plus, smaller fish can put up a hell of a fight on light enough gear.
@@SnowblindOtter You bet. I love catching chubs and golden shiners on ultralight gear.
Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
You earned a sub ❤
Thanks and welcome!
Dope video
Thanks
@@Bass_attack7755 I agree.
hahaha I also only use inline spinners I caught my pb fish on it in scotland while traveling but where I live the spinners isnt working
They are awesome but in some fishing situations, another type of lure will work much better.
😎👍 THANKS!
Glad you enjoyed it - good luck fishing!
