Been looking forward to these ones EB! Amazing how with one gas mask, and four innocent sounding words, Steven Moffatt created something so terrifying!
I suppose knowing that both Gas Masks contained asbestos was really comforting after WW2 - dont know where mum put hers but I found my in-laws a few years back.
These are set in London, but filmed in Cardiff. I live here, and it always adds something when you recognise a familiar street. The spin-off series aimed at a more adult audience, Torchwood, features Captain Jack as the leader of a group dealing with situations outside of the mundane, is actually set in Cardiff. He's a fascinating character.
Yeh I'm in Cardiff too. I like torchwood apart from when they go to America. But the one thing I hate about it is that the writers made all the characters complete dicks lol. It has a depressing feeling about it.
The fandom loves Captain Jack. This episode is definitely built around the scene of the Doctor shouting, “Just this once, everybody lives”. Imagine how many times he’s failed to save people, how many episodes end with people sacrificing themselves to save the world. It’s good to finally give the Doctor an episode where everything works out and he can leave happy. It’s probably the only episode in the series where he can end up happy enough to dance. The value the episode has increases the more Who you watch and the more death you see.
I read an interview with the writer of this story. He was asked about the people who had contacted the BBC to complain that it had scared their kids to the point of nightmares. He was absolutely thrilled about it! Kind of, "YES! Hide behind the sofa like people would in the old days! - job done!". 💚🐇🐴💚
Glad you’re watching the Doctor. We were like you during this Ep…. WTF is going on? Afterwards, my daughter used to say at every opportunity: “Are you my mummy?” My response was: “Unfortunately!” 😂😂
Sometimes you just have sit back and say to yourself "yes, that's two people dancing to Glenn Miller on the roof of a spaceship in front of the Big Ben clock tower"
Jack Harkness plays a pivotal role in Dr Who from now on. In time he becomes leader of the Torchwood. A brilliant spin off. The two series often share joint storyines and the series are very intermingled having visual clues common to both programs as well as characters guesting on both shows. Like everbody says "Blink" is terrifying. If you remember the bad wolf mentions so have the writers. This is the start of a wild ride
These are great episodes- this one is worth waiting for. Normally the The Time Lords prevented other races from developing time travel, but they arent around anymore so humans developed it eventually.
Introducing one of DWs greatest writers. One of the great things about this episode is showing the dark side of the blitz. Like all countries who fought in WW2, Britain has a mythology about the war. One of these is the 'blitz spirit' with people singing together in shelters and defying the nazis. This was part of it of course but the crime and terrible poverty was rife. My mum was ten when the blitz began. My grandad was a black marketeer and petty criminal so I have heard a lot about how dark and terrifying this time really was.
Yes, he still does Hollywood shows but mostly UK stuff. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in 2014 for his charity work and entertainment. Met him at a convention once, he's exactly like his on screen persona. Love to see him meet the Ncuti Doctor.
Actually, he's Scottish-American, because he may have been born and lived his early childhood in Scotland, but he moved to the US when he was 8, and spent the rest of his childhood there. The American aspect of his nationality is just as if not more important than the Scottish part.

The fact that these 2 episodes predicted an pandemic 15 years before Covid and patient 0 is Jamie is pretty good story telling. 'physical injuries spread like a plague.'
In torchwood ( a dr who spin off, you will get there) a lot of things happen in Cardiff instead of London EDIT : just realised this episode introduces capain jack , unintentional timing on this comment
This episode pairs "alien" and "unknown" perfectly. The alien equivalent of a band aid causes serious harm to humanity and has the potential to wipe us all out. That's a fair description of the episode when you stop and think about it.
The Empty Child turns some of the sci-fi tropes on their head. We are introduced to a creepy child, that actually turns out to be innocent , rather than the apparent helpful persons that turn out to be evil.
😂😂 oh Allen, you're cracking me up on this one, dude. Right so I don't know if you watched the link to a recent interview with Chris Eccleston, but said that of all the episodes he was in, this was his favourite story. Without trying to give any spoilers away, we get to meet a very important recurring character in captain Jack Hackness (you may know him from ARROW). He pops up a lot in Dr. Who, and he's the lead in the spin-off show TORCHWOOD. Jack he a secret, but I'll let you discover that out for yourself.
Such a great story. No wonder it won the Hugo Award back then (You have four more Hugo Award winning Doctor Who stories to look forward to). Captain Jack made a great new companion but Nancy would also have been a great addition to the TARDIS crew,

Hi E.B., I`m glad you enjoyed the story, although you certainly got frustrated early on. I can`t say it affected me in that way when I watched it. I`m surprised you didn`t seem to notice Rose`s unhelpful tee-shirt when daggling from a rope, in the middle of a German air raid. You will notice stories written by Steven Moffat, can be often unsettling.

This was second in creepy vibes only Weeping Angels was creepier
Steven Moffatt, the writer who creates the really creepy episodes. His best is yet to come!
Hey EB, if you were an Alien race and had a choice of the US or UK to make your first contact ... which would you choose 😁😉
This episode is absolutely bananas!
Don't drop the episode it's full of potassium 😂
I cannot wait for your reaction to "Blink"
I love his laugh!
This is my favourite Dr Who episode from the new era. Fun fact, the child is the son of an actress that used to star in Grange Hill in the 80s 👍
which actress?i watched grange hill in the 80's
@@sarablack2547 Alison Bettles. She played Fay Lucas.
Who I incidentally had a MASSIVE crush on 😂
@@bluesmachine1006did she have straight blonde hair? She sounds familiar.
Your next mission Mr Electric Beard , if you chose it, is to follow and learn all about Captain Jack in the Torchwood series. Torchwood is an anagram of Dr Who.
The girl who played Nancy works on the kid's youtube channel ZinniPops with her husband.
Well, focusing so many episodes in the locals is for saving on the budget that would otherwise be exhausted on extensive scene sets. Btw, not mad, just thought I'd put that out.
"oh damn, now i feel forced to watch another episode, i must know how this ends?" :)
just in case you do decide to do spin offs this is the best watch order i could find

Great 2 parter and for me, the first time the show got scarey (but not the last...)
loved this story even though it freaked me out big time !😱
Get ready for Jack!
I'd forgotten this was the first appearance for cap Jack... no spoilers booooy's
Continuing to love rewatching part of my child/earlyteen hood with you my dude.
Dr who, torchwood and peaky blinders ftw
