For me, this is absolutely where the show takes off and starts to find its own identity. Moffat starts making his official mark on the franchise with an absolute banger of a story and the introduction of a fan favorite character. The rest of the season is a truly enjoyable ride.
I mean technically Moffat started making his mark on the franchise during the Wilderness Years. He wrote a few short stories, but his biggest contribution during that time is probably the comedy special "The Curse of Fatal Death."
Someone probably already told you but you might recognize 'Captain Jack Harkness' as 'Malcolm Merlyn' from Arrow. And he is eye candy, but also dance candy and ear candy - if that is a thing - for he played some major leading roles in musicals for Andrew Lloyd Webber.
@@TravisViews his name is John barrowman. You probably won’t see him again. Look up the scandal. Sad that people can’t just behave respectfully. Edit: you won’t see him again in new things. Arrow was after this.
Spock was a very popular Star Trek character of the Vulcan species. He and Captain Kirk were the reason/logic and passion respectively of the crew. Spock would often scan for stuff in the episodes.
So this episode and the second part are written by Steven Moffat NOT Russel T Davies (who was the main showrunner with New Who from Season 1-4). Moffat occasionally dipped in from time to time mainly with two-part stories that showed AMAZING and HORRIFYING monster concepts. This is the first! Eventually, RTD would leave after season 4 and during the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi era, Moffat would be the showrunner. It kinda went downhill a little from there but you're in for a treat if you like the monster and writing in this one! For sure this two-parter has to be in the top ten Doctor Who episodes of all time! And don't worry, they are PLENTY MORE scary Moffat monsters in his closet for you to see!
Moffat is a great writer, but as a showrunner, he didn't quite collect the level of talent around him that Davies did (though there are some brilliant exceptions).
*Series Also, Peter Capaldi's era ended on a high note, Series 10 was phenomenal. RTD is still my favourite showrunner, with Midnight and Waters of Mars as some of the best written episodes of television I've ever witnessed. I must say though, Moffat started strong, and ended strong.
Not only 2 of the best episodes of all of Doctor Who -- Original and New -- but 2 of the best episodes of TV ever. So creepy! AND with Captain Jack, so there is that. 😏 Enjoy Part 2! !
This episode and the next episode, which continues this one, are two of my most favorite episodes of the entire series, and certainly my favorites of this season. I have watched these two episodes SO many times. They're just both SO good. Definitely agree that this is the best episode yet of this season.
I’ve been waiting two weeks for this 🤩🥳 also rose wants the doctor to use more flashy, obviously “alien” tools, a la the character Mr Spock from Star Trek, an alien from another sci fi tv show
I’ve got a plague doctor mask(has kinda a steampunk look to it) that I wear on Halloween sometimes but that doesn’t come near close to as creepy as the costumes in this episode!(and the next obviously)
Watched this with my GF when it aired... To this day, if I creep up behind her and say, _"Are you my mummy?"_ , she slaps me! Can you believe that?! The nerve! lol
I watched this episode of Doctor Who when it first aired, I'm now in my 30s and it still really freaks me out... That first "Mummy..." sends shivers all of my body every single time ... I've had a fear of gas masks and creepy kids ever since my first watch, and I still close my eyes when that kid is on screen :/ The rest of my family loves this episode tho lol x Gotta love Captain Jack tho :)
I am halfway thru season 3 on Patreon at time of posting !
And are you enjoying it ? 💯👍👍👍
Season 3, my favorite!!! The 2nd half is amazing!!!
Travis joins the long ranks of Captain Jack Harkness stans.
Seriously.

@@bookswithike3256 Yeah, that's why I qualified it with official. Curse Of Fatal Death is amazing.

This two parter was the first time I actually got scared watching Doctor Who. It’s so well done. I can’t wait for you to see the ending!

This (and part 2) is one of the most memorable episodes with the 9th doctor.

This is such a great two-parter!
It is !

LOVE this episode! Moffat is such a great monster maker
Captain Jack is played by John Barrowman. He also sings and has been in several shows and musicals
Welcome to the somewhat awesome brain of Steven Moffat! . . . Mummy?
Someone not getting the Spock reference - I feel so old.
Watched this with my GF when it aired...
To this day, if I creep up behind her and say, _"Are you my mummy?"_ , she slaps me! Can you believe that?! The nerve! lol
😂😂😂
Horror who is the best;) There are many such episodes to come.

I love this episode so much, it's really creepy!
Omg I couldn't with this episode!!! 😂😂 This episode is sooo creepy hahaha
There was a Jack Harkness spin-off show called Torchwood. Except for the final season, it’s really good.
Hopefully you found out that Jack is from Arrow. He plays Malcolm Merlin
ive never watched Arrow...
The second American reaction I've seen for this episode. Both commented on mauve.
If you like Captain Jack Harkness you should try the Series Torchwood it is a spinoff of Doctor Who
This episode scared the hell out of me 😱😱
sorry old son but as we invented the language we will pronounce it our way ;)

Fantastic reaction 💯👍👍👍🤘🇬🇧🤘
Oh yeah. This is iconic.
Jack = John Barrowman = Malcolm Merlyn in Arrow.
She did say give her some spock

You must not be high enough
Not a fan of this Doctor or this series, but this is a great episode, if for no other reason than the introduction of Captain Jack.
Spoiler alert... Def like the next doctor more myself !
