The Mind of Evil is a great throwback to the last season's hard-edged narrative style with many effective moments. Also, Delgado's Master excels as a Mafia-style boss

There's no need to apologize, I think I speak for all reasonable viewers when I say that what matters is your comfort, your mental wellbeing and your overall health, these videos are far less important than any of those.
I hope your visit to your family is good and your car problems will be resolved soon.

  • @whobp8

You have nothing to apologize for. It's only fairly recently that a colorized version of this became available and speaking for myself, seeing your reaction to these stories is infinitely more important than whether the video footage is in color or not. Hope you were able to complete your trip successfully after your rocky start. Pik-Sen Lim, the actress who plays Chin Lee in this story, was the real life wife of the writer, Don Houghton. Houghton also wrote Inferno, which is why there is such a good continuity reference to that story in these episodes. I'm very pleased to see how much you've embraced the characters of Yates and Benton. Looking forward to seeing you react to the rest of this story!

Doctor Who in the 70s does take a lot from Classic science fiction literature, I absolutely love how they merged elements of 'A Clockwork Orange's with political espionage and action, another case of Classic Who branching into an unusual genre.

You've got nothing to apologize for as you always do a good job. If anyone needs to apologize it's the BBC, for they're the ones who taped over the original colour versions of these episodes. As for the unfortunate problem with your car, this is due to the technological world we live in today. We've become so dependent on using things like cars and computers, it stresses us out when they stop working properly. When something goes wrong on my side of the pond, it makes me want to just go and stand on top of a quiet mountain and think of nothing. Great reaction 👍👏. All the very best, Trev from East London, UK.

I hadn't noticed before, but the location where Benton is rendered unconscious was Cornwall Gardens - the same place that the First Doctor, with the help of the military, captured the War Machine.

Like many others I first saw this in black and white on video, it seemed like older 1960's episodes. I enjoyed it in that format. Saw the colour version when the dvd came out. I think both versions work & it was incredible how the BBC managed to genuinely colourise a completely monochrome story.

Vent away. 🙂 It's healthy. The reason why a number of the 3rd doctor stories are in black and white is because the original coloured versions got destroyed by the BBC. Don't worry about it and if anyone complains, they can always take a run and jump. You do amazing reactions and you need to not be so hard on yourself so much. Have a great holiday and party all night long. 🙂

I absolutely adore this story and this era's continuity of the Doctor’s worst fear being the destruction of the parallel Earth from Inferno. Unsurprising since it’s the same writer Don Houghton but I still appreciate this moment greatly and Jon Pertwee gives it all the gravitas it's due. In a lot of ways, this adventure suits black-and-white as it reminds you of one of those old timey political thrillers and the locations are meant to be grey and drab anyway (it’s a prison after all). It’s one of the best Master stories ever too, Roger Delgado has rarely been cooler smoking that cigar and dressed like a mafia boss. This story is also a goldmine for showing the Master's past friendship/connection to the Doctor.

Not to worry, Jess. Back in 1971, most of us wouldn't have been watching in colour. _The Radio Times_ television schedule magazine, was still differentiating the colour programmes in italics above it's entry and timeslot. Regular complete colour viewing was still some way off and most of us would have been watching on black and white sets. Fret not. For those of us that watched 'The Mind Of Evil' the first time round, the effect is of nostalgia, not irritation. Sorry you've had car problems. I hope you had a nice trip and reunion. We'd have sent Bessie to take you, but she's otherwise engaged. How's about turning up in that neat yellow roadster, eh? Wouldn't that be a talking point!

Thanks for caring so much about the colour/black and white thing. It was originally shot in colour, but (as with much of 1960s Who) the BBC wiped it! There are BBC recoloured versions out there... But no harm done that you couldn't find one (the story is the important thing!) There are a few more 3rd Doctor stories that suffer from similar colour/black and white problems... including The Daemons - which is the last story of season 8. Benton first appeared The Invasion. Benton actor John Levene first appeared as a Yeti in Web of Fear!

This story has a complicated history when it comes to available versions.
It was broadcast in colour; but then the story was lost from the BBC archive.
A few minutes of colour footage of episode 1 survived in an ancient betamax recording;and the colour was restored to the episode for its DVD release, using the recording as a reference.
It's available in colour on Britbox - but probably not on other streaming services.
Not that matters. I think it works well in b/w!

I always rather envied my brother, who is one of those guys who can take broken things apart and put them back together... and they work! I always remember, as a kid, not being allowed in the garage sometimes because he had his Yamaha in bits around the floor, in precisely the right order so he'd know where to start putting it back in one piece. I've never seen him do a jigsaw puzzle but presumably he's a grand master at it.

They weren't 'colorized.' They were filmed in color because back when PBS was still broadcasting all the Doctor Who episodes in the 1970s/80s, starting with Jon Pertwee, these were in color.

Yeah all Pertwee episodes were in colour but they junked them along with the 60s episodes but managed to get them all back from other sources but some episodes they only had black and white copies. By the time the DVDs came out they had the technology to get them back into colour. I did read that back in the 90s when the episodes were released on vhs it was too expensive to be able to do it back then.

The 'UNIT Family' set-up had the long-term effect of affording much of the supporting cast equal billing to the companion of the day. Thus, actors like John Levene (Benton) and Richard Franklin (Mike Yates) are only slightly less important to the ongoing narrative - and, indeed, to fans - as Jo or the Brigadier. Levene, in particular, has become more visible since his relatively lowly role in 'The Invasion'. In fact, you've 'seen' him earlier than that. He was a Cyberman as far back as 'The Moonbase' and, later on, a Yeti!

As for the b&w, unless there's some special color code going on (and there isn't), what is there really to complain about? As for the story itself, it was always funny to me that the "threat" were the Chinese instead of the usual Russians. I wonder if this (in real time) was before or after Nixon's trip? First of all I hope your problems got sorted out and that you got to see your family. That is rather more important than whether this story is in black and white. I feel this story suffers less from the loss of colour than some of the other 3rd Doctor stories. The Dragon costume was pink and was referred to on set as Puff the Magic Dragon. The reference to Dracula's castle at the beginning was appropriate as writer Don Houghton would go on to write two of Hammer's Dracula films starring Christopher Lee.

It was broadcast in Australia during December 1984 in B & W on ABCTV. Considering it was released in the UK in 1971 and exported to a country that didn't have colour TV until January 1975 it is questionable whether it was ever broadcast here in colour in the first place. Neverfail it is arguably the one Pertwee story that works a treat in B & W.

That second cliffhanger shows low budget done well; simple wobbly wipe to a dragon statue, then a dragon costume seen only in close-up and a reaching hand.
As I recall, it was bright red like a cartoon dragon, I expect what some people fear is the symbol, not the reality.

One of the most common things I hear mentioned from people who are fans of the new series when they first watch the older classic serials is how much more frightening they are. Given that this is the unrestored version - and quite a lot of fans are not old enough to remember it as broadcast - it just goes to show how first impressions are not reliant on the original context. Fandom has sometimes felt hostage to that pocket of older fans who shout 'You weren't there, man! YOU WEREN'T THERE!' - as if 1971 was at the heart of the London Blitz or something. The irony is, given the oft-repeated suggestion that younger viewers lack discernment or an attention span for anything made before the turn of the century, a lot of us PREFER the monochrome version. Occasionally, I think a modern story might benefit from the same treatment.

I don’t mind the black and white, as long as you are enjoying the episodes that’s all that matters in the end.

Honestly Jess, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Life happens sometimes and you can't control where it takes you, I just hope you got to your parents okay. A black and white version of a colour story should not be your biggest worry, it's better than nothing.
On to the story itself, I do quite like this one, as you say there are several storylines and it's how they all interweave is where the fun and the drama comes from. I loved your comment about Pertwee's face acting, he can't help but look funny doing this, some of his old comedy skills unintentionally coming to the fore perhaps. I have a slight issue with him telling Jo to follow his instructions; from what I've seen already Doctor she's done nothing but follow your instructions and made herself so very useful. I believe we've started a worrying trend here where almost everyone underestimates Jo's capabilities.
Another couple of oddities, in the plot, I spotted this time are that the Governor does indeed stop the use of the Keller machine but doesn't stop the next guy, to be subjected to it, from being brought into that holding cell. Also it must be the same Chinese girl, there can't be more than one, surely!?
Despite that there is a lot to like in this for instance, TA DA, The Master is back!! He's obviously operating very differently than last time, there it was like he had a deadline and was trying to get all his conniving plans in at once. Here he's got a whole set up behind him with a fancy car and a driver, even. And given that the Keller machine was installed a year ago means this plan is more of a slow burner for him, I like this version of the Master very much. Hey, none of the other main characters know he's even in this story yet, that's some waiting game.
I'll finish with our UNIT team, I love all those moments of comedy Brig with the Doctor and the Chinese delegate, Nick Courtney excels in this type of comedy, it's really nice he's able to show this side of the Brig without his authority being damaged too much. Also I'm glad you're enjoying our other regular's like Yates and Benton. Poor, poor Benton; he gets out foxed while keeping tabs on Capt. Chin Lee and almost, almost could've captured the Master if he would've known to take notice of that engineer a bit more. It's just not his day is it?

I hope our trip went off okay and that the car was okay. Don't worry about the B & W It is your reactions we watch you for not the video you show. Anyone who doesn't understand that can go and look for the colour versions themselves and watch them on their own.

Sorry to hear about your car issues, mine's been dead 1.5 years now, just sitting in the driveway. Starting to think about a replacement.
As for the video's a really appreciate your perfectionism but don't worry about it. If you lived near me I'd gladly lend you my DVDs but I'm in Connecticut. Tomorrow is another day, I hope it's a better one for you, you deserve it.

1st No need to be sorry, Jess, we all have bad times and you need to vent do so also I find screaming helpful occasionally and when everything has calmed down or at least I have thought it through I play music a bit of AC/DC, The Cockroaches, Queen and more (If you haven't heard of these bands look them up that goes for anyone reading this comment not just Jess) 2nd Great episode this one, hopefully one day you see the colour version even if you watch it in your own time and compare it to the black and white version you are seeing that'll be fine by me.

For the longest time, The Mind Of Evil was only ever available in Black & White. I've watched it for years and years like that. And then a few years back they released a color version of the story. Honestly, with this story, I prefer the black & white version because it's the one I have watched over and over for as long as I've been a fan of the show. The color version throws me off to be honest I think personally it has more atmosphere this way than the color one. So that being said, I'm more than ready for this one, let's go!

Whenever you see this (if you ever do) which will not be when you filmed this or when it posted to TH-cam (due to timey-wimey circumstances) I hope you know... you're awesome. Obviously I don't know you in real life, but the impression I get is, you're awesome. I do know that I love your reactions, I never thought I'd be able to watch reactions to animated episodes but you proved me wrong. So reactions to b/w episodes?? Absolutely not a problem. Bring it on! 💕

So the episodes are in black and white. No problem. Of my top ten favorite films, only three of them are in color; stuff being in black and white is not an issue. Sorry to hear you've been having a tough time of it recently. You bring up that feeling of being so stressed that you're about to cry; that is a very familiar feeling for me, so I feel your pain on that one. I really do hope that for this past week you've had a really nice and enjoyable time with your family.

If memory serves, the 'Chinese Dragon' earned the - perhaps inevitable - nick-name 'Puff the Magic Dragon' (with apologies Peter, Paul & Mary). So it wasn't all doom and gloom. But if any era in Dr Who leans on the politics of the day, it's this one.
