Christopher Eccleston left pretty abruptly because there was a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes which caused him to suffer from really bad mental health problems. He has said that he left the show because he "didn't enjoy the environment or the culture that the cast and crew had to work in", but that he was proud of having played the role. He said in a subsequent interview, "My relationship with my three immediate superiors - the showrunner, the producer and co-producer - broke down irreparably during the first block of filming and it never recovered."
On a positive note, Eccleston began appearing as a guest at Doctor Who conventions for the first time in 2018. He had previously expressed his reluctance to appear at conventions, saying in 2017 that he preferred to "just earn his living by acting". He has since said that his experience of meeting fans at conventions "healed something in him" and made him re-evaluate his relationship to the series.

Straight talking heterosexual Northerners don't seem to gel too well with the liberal luvvies in the BBC. I was working at a studio doing some construction work years go and panicking production team member came running in and told my colleague and me to move our toolboxes and hide out of site whilst the actors walked in. She said that they would have a breakdown if the had to walk past 'workmen'.

The rumor was that the director of the first block wasn't very pleasant to work with - probably due to the intense pressure he was under - and when Eccleston took cast and crew complaints to Phil Collinson, Phil refused to intervene because the shoot was running behind. Eccleston got into a shouting match with him and eventually thumped Phil.
Nothing will get you sacked faster than punching a producer.
Understandably, Julie and Russell weren't entirely happy with the situation. Everyone was under a lot of pressure and it led to the four of them not talking again.
A sad incident and an unfortunate situation all round.

I really wish we would have gotten more of 9, he is my favorite and Ecclestone really portraid all the emotions of the Doctor, from joy to anger to sadness to absolute fear. Just look at that scene after he closes the Tardis door and leans his head on it listening to the Daleks outside. Catching himself for a moment after being taken completely of guard (and scared out of his mind). Subtle but very strong.
That said, enjoy 10, he is also great. :)

Little tip: Before watching the Christmas Special, yes, they count, which is called The Christmas Invasion, watch the Children in Need special that is set after this regeneration, which is called Born Again.
Also, congrats on witnessing your first regeneration.
Basically all Time Lords have 13 lives, and to save themselves from death, they can use up a life. It's the same Doctor, but a different face. Christopher Eccleston is the 9th Doctor, and David Tennant is the 10th Doctor. So the series from 1963 with Willam Hartnell is the same Doctor as these now, being he is the 1st Doctor...
The original, you might say. 😏
Time Lords can still die while regenerating, which is why when you see it happen, they normally regenerate in a place of safety like The TARDIS.

Eccleston had a tough job to revive the franchise as well as be the new doctor, he carried it off with great aplomb. Mr Tennant is a lot of fun and you're in safe hands again. This first series with Eccleston was hyped up a lot. On the night before the first episode aired, BBC Radio broadcast a special programme all about it. All the episodes of this first series have been filmed and completed. Eccleston was interviewed and was asked "Are you in i for the long run?", meaning will he be back for another series. Eccleston replied "I've done the long run". To me this instantly told me that he would not return for another series and that the Doctor would regenerate. I was proved right, but no-one believed me. Not even the media picked up on it.

A great review of a great storyline to end the first series of the reincarnation of the Dr Who story line. Interestingly, at around 29:50, there is a scene containing lots of Daleks on the station, but at that time, BBC Studios were said to only have six Dalek props, so they had to film the scene and over impose the props in different positions. It was said that doing this was complicated, as previously used spots had to be marked so could be avoided next time.

To clear up the pronunciation of "Dalek". It's pretty much pronounced as it's written, with emphasis on the "a", like Daalek. There's no r in either the spelling or pronunciation. For some reason a lot of people seem to get that wrong. Perhaps because English people tend not to pronounce "r" and it often sounds like "aa". Although it went against all narrative practice , introducing sweet Lynda as a ready made replacement actually made the thought Rose was dead believable .The Daleks were a well kept secret , even the papers didn't dare release spoilers . Dr Who is such a big part of so many childhoods and beyond here and bringing it back was a big responsibility , and I think the production was a Labour of love for many involved thankfully Russel T Davies and co. got it right . Terry Nation created the Daleks , I think it may have been the Radio Times , but as a Dalek had already featured in episode six it didn't necessarily mean they were in the finale.

I don't know how far ahead you are but if you're releasing these as you film them there's a bonus mini episode set between this one and the next. It's called Born Again or Children in Need (the charity it was broadcast for) and it covers Rose's reaction to the Doctors regeneration. Well worth the watch.

Its worth pointing out there is a 5 min special that slots in between this and the next episode, it's available on you tube.
Also, don't get your hopes up for loads of new doctor in the next episode. Casting a new doctor was quite last min, I think alot of time went into developing the new doctor. As a result he doesn't get much screen time. The story mostly focuses on rose dealing with him changing and him not quite being fully healed and ready for action.

Dah-lek. Single consonant rule extends the sound of the previous vowel. No 'R' needed. Trouble is that, although I was taught this in UK primary school in the 60s, it doesn't always work! Frustrating ain't it! I suspect Webster. When in doubt, always suspect Webster - and/or Johnson!

"So, new Doctor... I don't know how to feel about that."
That is basically the theme for the Christmas special episode that comes next in the series. Rose needs to come to terms with having lost her companion but her companion still being there, with an entirely new appearance and persona. We, as an audience need to go through something similar ourselves. And the Doctor needs to get some idea of who his new regeneration even is.
Russel T Davis really knew what he was doing. :)

If you don't know him yet, you will soon.) Thanks -- I can't wait to see more. You'll love it -- including the new Doctor and most of the others (I love them all but not everyone does). Have fun!

I always felt that the original plan was for Rose to leave and Lynda to become the new companion. But when Eccleston quit, RTD re-thought things and kept Rose on as she was part of the show's new popularity. Anyway - the show does get better from here though there are a few dud stories in the next series. The best is yet to come!!
