I cited some of Zipes’ writing on fairy tales in my MFA thesis, when laying out the overlapping categories of “folk tale,” “fairy tale,” and “myth.” This is a context in which I never expected to hear his name!
@mothmangotango Omg yes, I know his mainly from my personal research about Little Red Riding Hood. His book “The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood” was so useful to me. Wild seeing him here
Love that not only you did extensive research for this but actually emailed the academics you mention to ask them their specific thoughts and they replied, that's so cool!!
4:01 Clock the Tchaikovsky painting in the background :) I love the 2000s Barbie movies and appreciate them for teaching young me about ballets and music and literature. I blame Barbie for my love of Tchaikovsky's compositions in particular!💛
This movie and Barbie as Rapunzel shaped me as a lil one. I wanted so desperately to take ballet classes (couldn’t afford it unfort) but I’ve never stopped loving dance and art ❤
Something interesting about this movie is that the romantic leads were played by the same voice actors as the english dub voices of Sango and Miroku from Inuyasha. Kind of a fun little coincidence for fans of that couple to appreciate
considering that according to the lore barbie is canonically an actor starring in and sometimes playing herself in the barbie movies, yeah that's what the movie is called
omg. For the longest time my friend and I have made an event out of every straight-to-video barbie movie. It's become our thing. One just came out last week. Barbie movies deserve more attention. Thank you for doing your part.
girl I beg of you please please please make this at least a little series like I'm just begging for your take on other Barbie movies ESPECIALLY Swan Lake omg plz we needed this so much
I was expecting the video to just have fun at the awkward CGI movie that exists to sell toys, but I was pleasantly surprised by the analysis and research that went into this. Great work!
im only 15 minutes in and... oh my god? this is BY FAR, one of the best analyses ive ever seen on youtube. barbie in the nutcracker was so detrimental to my childhood and current love for ballet, tchaikovsky, literature and quite literally most of the arts. ive been on this train of constant curiosity about how others feel about my most favorite movie as a child, and this truly has sparked the same feeling i felt watching it for the very first time. and also this was another reminder that the nutcracker/eric's voice actor, kirby morrow, is no longer with us 💔
For those wondering where the idea of a multi headed rat king comes from. When large populations of rodents are forced into a confined space, like a wall cavity, their tails can get tangled resulting in a single writhing mass. In Europe these were quickly seen as a bad omens as they were often followed by plauges, though linking them to rat overpopulation took a while.
Girl, the c o m m i t m e n t - I’m impressed. Really enjoyed it, well constructed and also hilarious, plus my inner child is screaming from joy and bursting nostalgia powered tears :’) I am looking forward for your future content!
You have such a captivating way of talking that I somehow made it to the end of the video despite not knowing shot about either Barbie or The Nutcracker
I’m so glad the algorithm plopped this video in front of my face. What a gem, truly lol This movie IS a fever dream and I was obsessed as a wee child and have been shipping weird monster princes with sweet capable princess types ever since lmao
This weird movie is one of my childhood favorites. 😂I even rewatch it around Christmas time for nostalgia sake. I never realized how weird it actually is until I watched your video. Brilliant analysis. The commentary is witty, smart, and informative. So glad stumbled across it. Tim Curry as the Mouse King. 👑
oh my god... I just discovered your TH-cam channel and watched quite a few videos back to back only to finally see your profile photo and realize you've been a favorite artist ive been following on instagram for awhile!! 😳 omg what a wonderful day to discover more of your content!!
Wow, so glad to finally place this masterpiece in the context of its inspiration and circumstances. Thanks for the insight and humor and no thanks for reminding me of that horrid bat.
this is unlocking memories lmao i remember watching barbie nutcrackr with a friend and we killed ourselves laughing whenever something bad happened to the ugly bat Also the tumblrinas are right, white haired nutcracker is more attractive
You must've made that 19th century German literature scholars day contacting him, I cannot image he gets much feedback or questions from the general public outside of academics
I think you could make a video essay on almost all of the animated barbie movies, I watch them with my gf and we always laugh a lot! They are really weird. I need to see your hot takes on Bibble 😁
Haven’t thought about this movie in a while, used to watch it with my sister a ton I forgot about that weird bat guy and that fruit eating part haha Oh I used to love that Rock Golem too, thought he was so cool!
Watching this, i was dying every now and then when a moment of memory would shoot through my heart. I have been wanting to rewatch the barbie movies so bad, and yhis jist proved to me that i NEED to
I'm glad I found your channel, it's so good. This video really scratches that old movie rundown itch that no channel has really managed to scratch for some time. I find that every time I go back to videos by Spoony or TNC or stuff I like that I find that they're just... really dumb? So it's nice to find a channel that's smart, funny, and talks about Barbie. I don't know why it hasn't gained more traction, but I really hope it takes off. (quick anecdote: I used to be really prejudiced against Barbie movies, naturally, but when I saw Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus when I was 20 years old and going to film school I found that the screenplay was surprisingly good)
I own two editions of Jack Zipes' translations of the Brothers Grimm, and when I tell you I squeed when you brought him up! Love this video. Do not use AI.
i enjoy your content so very much, especially the satc 2 video but THIS - ugh barbie has such a special place in my heart and i loved hearing your thoughts and interpretations❤
My sister and I watched this movie on vhs over and over and over as kids. Safe to say it is deeply embedded into both our psyche. Honestly, a very formative experience. We were discussing it recently, and found out that we both subconsciouly assumed that Major Mint and Captain Candy were dating. In love. They just were, simple fact. Before either of us even knew gay people existed (our parents were slow on the uptake). This probably exposes a lot about the romantic relationships we were seeing around us but shhh let our unknowingly fruity child selves be. We had dreams then
The Mouse King having seven or more heads in the original story could also be related to the phenomenon of 'rat kings' where large numbers rats in high density areas supposedly continued living symbiotically after having their tails stuck together.
Family and I watched barbie movies a long time ago, all I remember is that they kept my attention and that some scenes have no heterosexual explanation, so I would say they're worth watching, maybe a few of them
It got age restricted so I'm reuploading it lol, currently waiting on 2 copyright claims on it to be released before I can make the new CLEAN version public ❤️
I came here to ask this same thing! I’m eagerly awaiting its return If you had to take out the last bit with the Portuguese Google translate I’ll be so sad
Dismayed and devastated that you don't like my boy the bat. He's an icon, the most expressive character in the movie, and my friend. Apologize >:-((( NAY, grovel for forgiveness you don't deserve >8-(
Although I do really dislike his English voice lol, he sounds too, Spongebob-y. I much prefer the Dutch dub (not just for him, the Nutcracker is much better there as well lol) But even then, he's just a little guy!! A little birthday boy!!
Indirectly convincing an academic to sit down and watch a straight to vhs Barbie movie has to be a career highlight.
He just immediately emailed me back like I AM GOING TO WATCH THE BARBIE MOVIE YOU SPEAK OF. He knew what he had to do!
I cited some of Zipes’ writing on fairy tales in my MFA thesis, when laying out the overlapping categories of “folk tale,” “fairy tale,” and “myth.” This is a context in which I never expected to hear his name!

@mothmangotango Maybe I’ll check it out as well…
I dont think I realised until watching this video that I actually know almost nothing about the nutcracker. this is a messed up story
Get nutpilled
Guysss you are not going to believe this but there are plants that smell just like peppermint in REAL LIFE
Are they trees, though? (Maybe if you're doll sized they're trees)
indeed, one of these plants is named pep- *I am stabbed by a big horticulture assassin before I can give away the secret*
Marzipan is always my nominee for best barbie movie animal companion. No annoying voice, consistently helpful, looks cool. All pros no cons
Marzipan is the lawful good the world needs to balance out the chaotic evil that is Shiver and Bibbel.
“Sleep is the cousin of death.” - Nutcracker
Love that not only you did extensive research for this but actually emailed the academics you mention to ask them their specific thoughts and they replied, that's so cool!!
They were both so lovely ❤️
sephiroth in the barbie movie is the kingdom hearts we all need but don't deserve
If they released a Barbie Kingdom Hearts it would be the best day of my life
4:01 Clock the Tchaikovsky painting in the background :)
I love the 2000s Barbie movies and appreciate them for teaching young me about ballets and music and literature. I blame Barbie for my love of Tchaikovsky's compositions in particular!💛
Same haha!

LMAO YOU ACTUALLY WROTE CLARA X SEPHIROTH FANFIC THIS IS AMAZING
I was born to do this
Something interesting about this movie is that the romantic leads were played by the same voice actors as the english dub voices of Sango and Miroku from Inuyasha. Kind of a fun little coincidence for fans of that couple to appreciate
Inuyasha moment (I have never watched Inuyasha)
OH MY GOD YOURE RIGHT!!! Oh my god that’s amazing
Ahhh I caught Miroku, but I missed Sango completely!!
I swear to god if this movie is titled "Barbie in The Nutcracker" I will eat one peanut
start crackin that nut
I am a Barbie movie god and I crack this nut with pride for my predictive genius 👁👅👁🥜

That's so fun!! I need to catch up on all of them bc I haven't seen about 6 of the newest ones :-)
this made me realize how much barbie rapunzel affected me. i watched that vhs so much
Same. I watched the featurette about female artists soooo much. And I loved the dress up game
Omg I waited so long for well researched Barbie movie. Mouse king is the best in the movie
girl I beg of you please please please make this at least a little series like I'm just begging for your take on other Barbie movies ESPECIALLY Swan Lake omg plz we needed this so much
I would love to do some more sometime!! So glad you enjoyed 💕
Rest in peace to Kirby Morrow who voiced the Nutcracker (and Cole from Lego ninjago) rest in peace king :( 🧡
I loved that movie as a kid! my ballet teacher gave each of us a copy because we all got Distinction for our ballet exam 💕
Aww that's so cute :-)
I love how you blend in your little animated treats and other editing funnies! so expressive:)

Hey thank you so much!! It's such a fun film
Well now I want to see more videos about the Barbie Cinematic Universe, this first video was so entertaining!
Thank you! I'd love to do more at some point, the Barbie movies are so fun!
that transition from drawing to flesh is awesome
Thank you! I was really happy with that! A fun lil way to open :)
@@mothcubbut did you actually become flesh or is it just movie magic

Really cool that you consulted people for this video, and I'm impressed they were such good sports.
This video essay was a crackin' good time!

I knew Barbie straight-to-dvd cg movies existed, but forty something of them sounds impossible to me, there's no way that can be right, check it again
I have tragically only seen 36 of them! 6 beautiful mysteries await me...
Adoring your vids. Like the editing, references, timing, and delivery are so good. I have teehee'd so much
Thank you so much!! Tee hee
I relate so hard to your sleep rant. I hate when this kind of thing isn't made clear! Can he sleep? Yes or no!!

I like to think Rattigan from the Great Mouse Detective is the Mouse King's descendant
Tim Curry Mouse is the real sex icon
you're brilliant and hilarious and more people deserve to know it

I saw a Dracula ballet and there was a lotta gay subtext. It was very sensual! and the male characters danced together! Sensually!!
