- Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm creating two bold and colorful 24x18" abstract pieces on mixed media paper. I'll walk you through from start to finish and give you a quick tour of my studio. I talk about a trick I use to make changes to my paintings without using paint, so stick around to the end to learn how I do that.
My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. You'll see me create it from start to finish. There's no music, however, you'll hear me talk through a lot of my process and discuss products/tools that I'm using.

Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. I did get all of your favorite products. I gave them your name (at Nova paints also) but you mentioned a color in this video that isn't on your list so I thought I would try it. Cadmuim Red. They offer 3 different ones, Light (145), Medium (125) and Deep (132). I would like to try the one you are using in this painting. Thank you!
Hi Lindsey, I'm just now seeing this question. But, I think I answered it for you already in one of the other videos. Thank you!
i love painting on paper too. i then mount the painting onto cradle boards that i make from recycled wood. this weekend i found 110 precut masonite boards at the dump. i felt like i had won the painting lottery!
Totally big win in finding all those masonite boards! So cool! I just mounted three 24x18" paper pieces to cradled wood for a show next month. Love the way they look!

@@sheilaorr5596 Sheila, I'm guessing you don't like my art based on your comment. Is that correct?
Congrats!,
Your paintings are so distinct i would be able to spot your work anytime. They are so pretty... i love colour too. Yr voice is so soothing and quite meditative. Just love watching you work. Thankyou.
Thank you so much, Andrea! I appreciate your kindness!
Always so grateful that you post your process videos. Your work... totally stunning as always. Thank you Betty.

I too like working on multi media paper. It is very forgiving. I am not so timid on paper. Love your work.
Right...less timid on paper. That's what I love about paper! Thanks for watching, Jane!
Watching you work is such an inspiration. Thank you so much for all these amazing videos you make for us to watch.
You are so welcome, Kristina! I'm so happy you're enjoying my videos!
Love the loose, free feeling of these! Gorgeous colors and such depth, Joy-filled for sure!

Wow Betty this painting are insanely beautiful, love watching you create, thanks Betty for sharing your beautiful gardens, I watch you on a giant TV but needed to get on my iPad and tell you how amazing you are 👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️🙋♀️
Thanks so much, Milly! You're very kind!
While I'm watching and listening to you I am totally focused on the changing marks and colours plus what you're saying. I only even noticed the background plastic when I read a couple of comments! My take on surfaces.. I love smooth surfaces like paper and wood. I don't like the surface of canvas or the 'bouncing' while I paint I think because I love what I call blending and smoothing out my marks. When I paint I try to take myself out of my 'think too much' zone, which I'm getting better at. So I agree music takes you somewhere else which in effect is someone else's zone. I haven't really tried painting with my non dominant hand only some mark making. I have sometimes not put on my glasses though to be less precise and loose. BTW..thank you for all your videos, they're really good to immerse oneself in.
Hi Joan! Thanks for sharing that with me. My first love is paper! Although, I have learned to work with the bounce and surface of canvas. I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos!
As always I love your work 🥰 it always turns out beautiful!
Thank you so much!

I love all colors, but the bright ones really speak to my heart! Thanks, Melane!
That’s a color shaper and they’re great. Nova paints are totally the best. I put them in squeeze bottles ordered from AMAZON. Put curtain hanging pins in the top to prevent clogging !!
Brilliant idea!! I need to get some squeeze bottles and give that a try! Yes, color shaper...I had to look it up this morning! 😂
@@BettyFranksArt Wish I could take credit for the idea however the curtain end pins IS my deal. The other belongs to Nick Wilton. Sooo much easier. Get the 8” tall bottles
@@vahunter752 Will do! And, you get credit for passing along a great tip!
what are curtain hanging pins ?
@@coraannetoledo-merritt1220 these are long pins used to hang the very ends of curtains on a rod. Any long sturdy object would do but it must be long enough to penetrate the entire length of the squeeze bottle spout. This should prevent clogging
Always imperfect perfection!!!!!

I tried Nova Color Paints because I loved the way they look in your paintings. I use Americana craft paint, and Liquitex and Golden various viscosities, and other brands. Will you please share the name of the app you used?
I really enjoyed this video - the entire process with your detailed explanations as well as the view of your studio! Awesome!
Hi Shannon! Glad you enjoyed the video. The app is called Picart.
Hi Betty. I’m loving your channel! I am starting to use more acrylic. I live in my van so very limited on space and painting on paper is right up my alley, for easy storage.
What is the best way or your favorite way to display acrylic on paper?
Thank you for sharing your art and wisdom 🐶♥️🙋🏻♀️
I love that you're living in a van and creating! I'm planning to go on the road next year for a full year in my RV. Can't wait!
I usually display my art on paper matted and in a cello sleeve. However, I only do that for shows. When I sell my small art on paper to my email list, I just sell the artwork.
I hope that helps! Have fun creating!
@@BettyFranksArt thank you. See you on the road!! I hope that our paths cross. Thank you for suggestion.
came out very cool
Many thanks! Super fun pieces to create!
I love canvas for the sounds of scraping and scratching on it with pallette knives and other tools
Isn't that the best! Try it on wood--even better!
I just love your painting. I stopped painting about eight months ago to take a break for a while have a company but it wasn’t doing so well. From the ground up Creations. I studied under Dionne Woods and I love painting and hopefully soon will get back into it
Thanks, Shannon! I hope you get back to doing what you love!
Thank you for sharing the names of these pieces. I find naming my creations to be the hardest part.
You are so welcome! I keep a list of potential names I can use. When I hear something said, or if I read something, or maybe hear a few words in a song that speaks to me, I write them all in my phone to access when I'm stuck.
Beautiful!! That’s interesting I think that’s what makes me freeze, using canvas. I’m going to try the large paper!
Yes! Please give paper a try and see if it helps!

So glad you enjoyed watching my process of how I create. Thanks so much, Carol!
Beautiful
Thank you so much!!
Lovely to watch you work. Out of interest what are the benefits of using Bristol paper?
I love Bristol paper because it's super smooth. It allows me to create my own texture. I also love mixed media paper. I don't love watercolor paper because it's too bumpy (in my opinion, for the type of art I create). Thanks for asking, Sarah!
Thank you for telling us the colors you’re using… I looked you up specifically for this because I’m going to try nova color and it was hard to decide which colors to try… I use a similar color palette.💕
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much!
love the new "thanks" ability to send a few $$! YOu mentioned it in another video. I gain so much from watching your videos! So, thank you!
Thank you again, Kate! Love the support!!
I understand your thinking about paper, wood and canvas! For me it’s also space, of which I have little. I use a lot of paper and also my sketch books and it’s true you do feel at ease when you’re not worrying about the cost, my best ‘Betty Franks’s’ are in my sketch book/paper 🤣🇬🇧🇩🇲
Yup...totally understand that! I have lots of mini paintings in my sketchbook that I love! And, when you're limited on space, using paper is a great solution.
Wow Betty ! First time I've ever seen the painting adjustment made artificially on the device. Interesting to say the least.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
Thanks so much for ordering, Lindsey! I'm in Croatia right now and can't check what color I used. However, I'm pretty sure it was Cad Red Light. It's the brightest of the 3 reds and leans towards a bright orange.
Hi Betty, I love these paintings. The colours are beautiful. How do you charge for your paintings on paper?
I am a relatively inexperienced artist, and love to paint on paper, but have no idea how to charge and sell my paintings

Question 1... what is a cradle board.
2... do you mount all of your paper pieces?
3... if you do not, do you ship them in a tube or ship them flat?
Thank you for sharing your beautiful artwork, and your process, thoughts and wisdom!
Hello! Here's a google results page for cradled board: www.google.com/search?q=cradled+board&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS815US815&oq=cradled+board&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i512j0i22i30l8.3034j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I do not mount all my art onto wood. Just the ones that I want to include in a show. I ship them either flat or if going overseas, rolled in a tube.
Thanks so much for watching!
Do you or have you considered creating textile items? Your paintings would seem to lend themselves beautifully to scarves .
Yes! I have scarves and other products available with my art on them: www.bettyfranksart.com/products
Carpets, or floor coverings would be so pretty.

Thank you, Raye!
• Do you ever collage finished paper pieces to a blank canvas?
• I think you mentioned that you use Strathmore paper in another video? If so, did you realize that the weight of the paper is better when you buy from places like Blick than it is from places like Michaels? I'd always picked up paper at the "twofer" paper sales Michaels has and while I thought their 400 Series Mixed Media paper was good, I couldn't figure out why so many were raving about it. But then I was ordering other stuff from Blick one day, so I picked up a couple of larger tablets of the 400 Series (I usually used the 500 Series (that stuff feels like pure cotton rag - love it!). I couldn't believe how much weightier it was and now I am hooked on it like everyone else. :)
• NovaColor paints: me! I learned about them back in 2014 from Brian Kasstle who learned about them from Orly Avineri, -- best move I ever made. Cost, usability, etc. etc. Love it so much.
• Does the Krylon Workable Fixative have an odor?• If so, does it go away after awhile?
• Do you ever collage finished paper pieces to a blank canvas?
• Will you ever have online workshops that are self-study? That kind of thing could be pretty affordable for a lot of people, yet would generate income for years to come. You'd only have to put the effort of designing the course once, then maybe refine it down the road. After that, it's all gravy.
• Sorry for the list -- I've watched your videos for years now, but lately have watched a lot in a short span of time-- I suppose I saved up all my questions. I love your pieces and it's surely fun to watch another person's way of working.
Thanks!
Nancy, from just north of you in the Pleasanton/Livermore area.
P.S. No need to spend a bunch of time answering all of these questions -- maybe just use as food for thought.
Hi Nancy! I'll do my best responding to your questions:
I don't like to use collage in my current artwork. I've done mixed media art in the past and used collage.
I agree that there are many different types of paper on the market. I think each artist discovers what works best for them, their artwork, and their budget.
We're totally on the same page when it comes to Nova Color Paints!
Krylon Workable Fixatif has an odor. You'll want to spray it outside. And, the odor dissipates after a week or so.
I'm currently working on a online course. Hoping to have it ready in about mid-December or January.
Thank you for watching my videos!
Betting I think this is stunning. Compulsive kindness: that is what you are doing here, sharing your knowledge & talent without judgement.
Do you ever use paint pens such as Posca? Thanks again, you've got me painting after a rough patch.
So happy to help you through a rough patch, Terry! I have used Posca pens in the past (during my mixed media days), but they haven't found their way into my current work. I'll have to give them a try again!

I love Nova paints. I have them because of your recommendation. The only color that I have issues with is Indian Yellow. It’s too watery and just doesn’t go on like the others. It’s a bit frustrating. I would like to try some other colors. I got the basic ones that you recommended. I do love the colors and how bright they are and the colors created from mixing.
I'm sorry you're not liking the Indian Yellow. I usually mix mine with white or another color to make it more opaque. Start trying some other colors. I usually just get the 4 oz size to try out a new color. Have fun!
Thanks so much for all the tips! So generous! I want to try painting on paper, can you share how to keep the paper from buckling and warping when painting with acrylic on paper? It amazes me as how flat they remained! Did they stay flat when completely dry? How can I get the paper to stay flat? Thank you so much!
Hi! I used mixed media paper, which can handle a lot of paint. I put down a layer of gesso before I get started. If it curls a little, then I put something heavy on it overnight. Most of the time I don't need to do that. It also depends on where you're located. If you have a lot of humidity, it may curl more.
great video! curious why you have to gesso the paper beforehand? and what would happen if you didnt?
Hi Courtney! I like to put down gesso because it creates a barrier between the paper (that absorbs a lot) and the paint. I end up using less paint and I love how the paint glides across the surface.
Betty, what is that tool you didn't remember the name of? I looked in your list, and didn't see it there. Thank you for sharing your wonderful art and wisdom!!! 💖

I keep hearing composition and focal points are very important. What composition would you say these two beauties are and where would you say the focal points are? Thank you Betty...so much for sharing your talent with us!
Yes, I used to hear a lot about composition and focal points, too. With my style of painting, I don't always have a specific composition of focal point. However, quite often you can see either a crucifix composition or landscape. And, my focal points tend to be the larger elements. I hope that helps! Thanks, Shirley!
Yes, thank you Betty. I think I get stuck thinking too much about getting the composition and focal point right, that it stops me from painting freely. Thank you for answering my question.
I think it all takes practice. I know when I started out I had a hard time figuring out composition. I used to look at artwork on Pinterest and try to analyze a piece of art that I liked and figure out what was working about it. This helped me slowly better understand composition. Wishing you a wonderfully creative new year!
Hi Betty these are gorgeous, how much do you lose around the edges with the framing process?
It's usually about a 1/4" all around.

Beautiful work as always Betty. I was wondering, would you sell these with matting… and how would you package these for shipping? Keep creating beautiful work 💜
Hi Mary-Anne! I sell almost all my art on paper as is so that folks can choose their own matting/framing. Or they can have it mounted on wood. After years of painting and using many different brands of paint I've narrowed by favorites down to Nova and Masters Touch
Wonderful! I haven't head of Masters Touch, but you know how much I love my Nova paints!

@@susanstone3588 Good to know! Thanks!
I love watching you paint and listening to you along the way. I'm both surprised and intrigued to learn that rather than listening to music, you listen to audio books. Something occured to me: have you ever thought of going on a fun, solitary trek somewhere you love being? Perhaps a walk through the mountains, a forest hike, a stroll on the beach or just sitting in a beautiful place narrating your thoughts and feelings. Stream-of-consciousness might flow into deeper reflection. Then without editing it or listening beforehand, listen to it while you paint. That would make your work 100% you, but in a different way. Might be a home run; might be a flop. Might be fun to find out. 🌲🌳🌲🌳🚴♀️🚵♀️🏖🏞🗻🌄🌌🚣♀️🌊🚽
I love that idea, but I know myself very well. I'm not one who likes to write or record what I'm thinking/feeling. However, when I'm out hiking, etc., I'm absorbing everything around me and keeping enjoying that time in nature. Thank you for sharing that idea!
I noticed you used bright florescent pink and I was wondering the varnish you use does it have UV protection in it? Or will your beautiful pink fade due to the lightfastness?
Great question! I use Liquitex varnishes with have UV protection. It's the main reason I protect all my artwork. I don't want it fading over the years. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video....always nice to see you paint "in person". If you want to dry your paintings faster, you could always put a fan-on a stand- and point towards the painting. Much cheaper than an assistant. :)))

Hi, Betty, Beautiful work! Do you glue these onto wood? or Do you frame these? If glass is used in framing, what kind of glass?
These two were sold on paper as is (especially since they were sent to Germany). However, I just mounted another set of 3 to wood panel for an upcoming show in Santa Cruz, California. For the most part, I sell my paper pieces as is and let the person decide how they want to frame/mat them. Thanks so much for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you for your reply. When you do, what do you use to mount the paper on wood?

@@BettyFranksArt Thank you for the link. Simple enough :)
Can you share where you get your art printed on your scarves? I have one piece of art that I'd like to make a few scarves form but won't be selling online. Not very techy. What a dream come true, making money with beautiful art and working from home.
Hi Julie! Yes, definitely my dream job! I use www.shopvida.com for my scarves. Thanks for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you :) I'm saving up for one of your shower curtains. Love your work.
@@JulieN-nh2wz Awesome! Thanks so much!
Was there a reason you used the multi media paper instead of the Bristol? Is it smoother or thicker?
Probably because I can't find 18x24" Bristol paper (there's 19x24"--but that's not a standard size). And, I have lots of mixed media paper in the 18x24 size. I love them both!
