I love your style. I am very drawn to encaustic and wonder if your craft is a good companion for encaustic 🤔 I will find out. ☺️
Jenn, tissue paper is an outstanding companion for encaustic. I’ve used tissue paper in my artwork for about twenty years now-for mixed media paintings, art journals, and encaustic. The transparency of the unpainted portion of the tissue paper is 100% when used in encaustic; I love the way it disappears. It’s slightly visible on other surfaces (if you look closely). And another thing I’ve done with it is apply rubber stamp images to it with archival permanent ink pads (Ranger archival or Stazon brands). I have quite a collection of them, many with abstract patterns/designs that I love to use. Also alphabet stamps. I have a feeling you’re going to love this. I use Golden Liquid Glazing Medium, but there are other mediums you can use as well. I use this one because it will also thin out my paint and it adheres the paper really well without becoming really sticky.
@Marabethquinnart I looked up the tissue paper you like & have a question. Do you use just one layer? Formerly when I've used tissue paper, it won't hold wet media. Before I purchase some, I thought I'd ask. Thanks! I really enjoyed this clip & am now following you on IG 🥰
I usually add multiple layers of tissue to a painting-it adds depth, the different colors interact and it lends that dreamy feel to the overall aesthetic. I also use different brands of tissue because they have different qualities, as well as rice paper, teabag paper and mulberry paper. All are semi-transparent and lend specific qualities to the painting. If you’re having trouble with your tissue paper holding together, sometimes brushing it less when tinting it will help.
You inspired me to try layering transparent papers and now I can't stop playing with them. I've experimented with watercolour on wet strength tissue to make my papers, after deciding that I wasn't happy using plastic acrylics. Plus I want the transparency but I see that the really watered down acrylics you've used were actually quite transparent. I do love watercolours though more than acrylics. I'd be interested to know why you choose to use glazing medium rather than matt or gloss medium. But another thing I've learnt from someone's video is that if I stick the papers down with wallpaper paste I can use watercolours over it very easily once the papers have dried. As you might be able to tell, I'm absolutely fascinated by this process and materials. Thank you.
It is a fun process, indeed! So happy you’re enjoying working with transparent papers-I love it too. I use the glazing medium for several reasons: it doesn’t get gummy on my hands like matte medium does, and I also like to use it to make glazes with my paints and I use those sometimes over the paper, so it’s just handy to have the same product do both. And I have also found that I can put watercolors over the papers I have adhered with Golden Glazing Medium after it’s dried. They work just fine and then I spray varnish it to lock it in place before I brush varnish it.
AI always, I love your art and videos. Where did you get that bird stencil? Playing with colors is so much fun. I find myself being drawn more and more to burnt oranges, reds and turquoise blues. At least this past week, changes with the wind. That is the joy of freedom in creating art, to be totally lost in the moment!
Thanks Jill! And I know, I love it when a certain color grouping captivates me for awhile-it’s so invigorating. And are you talking about the bird stencil from my new video yesterday? If so, I bought that from the stencil assortment at my local art store.
@@marabethquinart yes, it was so pretty…..that must be an amazing art store. And I read Amy’s book, Dirty Sally! And promptly got another, The Thirteenth Chance. Great writer! Have a lovely weekend. Can’t wait to see your next video…..you keep my creative curiosity and juices flowing. 😊

Hi Marabeth, I've only just found your channel and I'm hooked!!! I find your work very informative and freeing the way you work. I haven't yet found my own way in the art world as yet, I started With fluid paint pouring and have been enjoying it but lately I find That their are so many artists doing the same thing and that's fine But I would like to try some art with your methods (my own take on it) If you know what I meen. Where should I begin I enjoyed your video on Painting on an exercise pad into squares but yet to try it. Would this be a good starting point? Sorry for the big ramble!! 👏💙🌈
Hi Janet! I’m so happy you find the channel helpful-that’s just what I was hoping for! Firstly, it’s very normal to start with one type of art and then keep morphing into something new; that’s actually the lifeblood of a dynamic art career, so you’re right on track! 😉 And there is nothing wrong at all with trying to do what another artist does when you’re learning and experimenting. For eons, art students (and we’re all students to some degree) have learned by trying to duplicate what other artists did, and then as they progress, they find their own voice, so again, you’re right on track. I would suggest starting with the exercise you mentioned and really try to just enjoy the process and experimenting with brush strokes and materials without much concern to how it looks. As you get more comfortable and enjoy yourself, you will begin to find that you like your work more. It’s never supposed to look great at first! (That’s the part no one tells you). Good luck and remember to have fun-that’s where we learn the best. Let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear.

Thank you Colette! And yes, it absolutely comes with practice. If you want an introduction to the process, I have a class you can go at your own pace on: www.marabethquinart.com/collage-class I’d love to have you join me!

Thank you so much! And I appreciate you watching and commenting 😊
Love this! Your process is amazing!
Please tell me what surface you are using, it looks like a regular canvas!
Indeed, it is canvas! Sometimes I will also work on wood panel as well as paper. They all work with collage like this…
@@marabethquinart Thank you, I look forward to trying this!
Beautiful, colourful works🙏

Would love to see how you painted the canvas before collaging ... Thank you for your video. I'm going to try this
I hope you enjoy the process! So much fun! Thanks for watching…
Do you use glue to stick tissue papers? Thanks for sharing. Looks beautiful
Love it. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, Annie! Thanks for watching. 😊
I love your work
Thank you so much 🥰
This is breathtakingly beautiful! I love seeing your process. Do you ever use Deli Paper?
Not yet but I imagine I will at some point. And thank you for the kind words 😊
To dry papers I've made a "clothes line" in the studio. Clothes pins hold the pages on the string
Oh that’s a great idea! Thank you!
Yep!!! You just need to be willing to wrestle with it!
The willingness to wrestle and stick with it has opened doors to my creativity that nothing else could. Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for your reply!
Absolutely love your work. I would like to know what you actually use to seal this painting with when done? Thank you!
I usually use Liquitex Satin varnish or something like it. Several thin coats. Thanks for watching 😊
How do you store the papers that are leftover from being torn up? Your rainbow box of painted tissue papers is beautiful.
I have a small box that I put scraps of paper into
How awesome!❤
Thank you Jill! 😊
Beautiful 😊
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
this inspires me so very much! xo
I’m so happy to hear that!💗
AI always, I love your art and videos.
I’m so happy you read it! I loved it. I think she’s getting ready to have another one out. And thanks for watching and leaving all of your creative thoughts-I love it!

Thanks so much Betsy!
I like your style
Thanks so much, Lee! I appreciate the comment 😊
Have you tried Carnival wet strength tissue paper? It's fantastic to work with 😊
I haven’t Debbie-is it transparent like regular tissue paper? Tell me what you love about it!
Yes it's transparent also great if you use a gelli plate
Love the gelli plate!
Hi Marabeth, I've only just found your channel and I'm hooked!!!
I find your work very informative and freeing the way you work.
I haven't yet found my own way in the art world as yet, I started
With fluid paint pouring and have been enjoying it but lately I find
That their are so many artists doing the same thing and that's fine
But I would like to try some art with your methods (my own take on it)
If you know what I meen. Where should I begin I enjoyed your video on
Painting on an exercise pad into squares but yet to try it. Would this be
a good starting point?
I really love this! I can't draw but I can do this! I've had an affinity to different types of paper forever. Do you ever add pieces of cloth?
I haven’t so far but I know people that do!
This is fabulous!!
Thank you, Elizabeth! 😘😘
