WOW! Betty that light ice blue color worked in that corner as I watched you fill that corner that color just popped . Good color for that area. I also liked your explaining of use of wood canvas . I haven't used wood before . I need to try that out as well . As it's different surfaces areas . Good to know and feeling the surface s to see top and bottom to make the wood hang properly when it's dry . Good observation on that good point tip as well. . I find it really hard to just sit and watch a video, so I watched this one while hemming my new pants by hand. So now I not only have pants that no longer sweep my not very clean floor, but also some color combinations in my mind that I really like (I have them in a little document as well, in case I forget). I really like the orange yellow next to the yellow green, and also the pink on red - is it vermillion? next to yellow green. I think I need a new yellow and/or orange because I am sure I can't create that lovely orange yellow with what I have. I am not buying your favorite brand because I live in Europe and right now I prefer to buy paints that do not need to cross an ocean to reach me, so I'll have to do some searching.
Hi Betty, love love this one. You asked if there were any mark making tools or mediums we could recommend and when I started I did not have the stabilo pencils or any of the ones on your list, but I did have Kingart Artist Mixed Media Gel Sticks which can be used wet or dry. They are beautiful highly pigmented fat gel markers and I personally love them. If you haven't already maybe you can give them a try.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Sheila! On the back side, I simply add the title and my signature/year and wire them up. I don't paint the back or anything like that. Sometimes there's a little bit of paint that gets back there. I leave it because to me it looks more original than if I clean it up and make it look store bought perfect. Also, no one sees the back side once it's hung up or placed on a shelf.

Thank you Betty for sharing you painting techniques with us. I was wondering if you spray your finished piece with a fixative before varnishing? If not, would the marks smudge or resist when you varnish? Thanks again!

Betty, in a recent video of a large 60x48 painting, you were mixing in plastic? Styrofoam? Bowls. Do you keep your cool and warm colors separated in your bowls? Do you at least initially use separate brushes for your cool and warm colors? I am struggling with mud. Do you use much water or medium? I wonder if my paints are put on too heavy. Because I’m getting mud 😮. Question three … are all your layers pretty thin paint??? ❤❤Thx! Ann
Hi Ann! When I'm working large, I tend to run out of space on my palette (table) because I mix in larger pods of color. I like to use yogurt containers or anything like that to mix colors when I run out of room or if I have all cool color on my palette, I'll start to mix warm colors in containers. That helps keep my color vibrant. If I don't want mud, I don't cross my warm and cool colors. I'll keep separate brushes handy. I hope that info helps!
I LOVE Nova paints! Try out their small 4 oz size to see what you think. Here's a link to the colors I use most: www.bettyfranksart.com/favorite-nova-color-paints
@@BettyFranksArt they are these intensely pigmented water soluble blocks from Art Graf. Only a few colors available but they are divine to make marks with that create deep shadows in whatever you use over them.
so very inspiring--thanks so so much! I am a beginner, and am wondering...do you schedule 'painting time' every day; or paint 'when the spirit moves'? (from Toronto, Canada)
Hello to you in my hometown or Toronto! I don't schedule time. I paint when I'm feeling up to it. I don't like to force it. If I show up in my studio and I'm not in the mood to paint, I find other things to do (clean up, scroll through IG, etc.) until the mood strikes me. It usually doesn't take long! I create about 3 or 4 times a week.
Hi Jann, here's a video I created on how I varnish my art on paper. I use the same process for wood/canvas. Also, lately I've been using a fixatif spray instead of a spray varnish I show in the video. Either one works. th-cam.com/video/KBg4GjajaPg/w-d-xo.html
Hi Betty… so I am working hard at cutting down my use of paper towels- the rag that you’re using in this video… is this something that can be washed and reused by chance? Thanks so much!!
Great idea and good question! I don't wash these rags, but I sure do use them until there isn't any more room for paint to be absorbed. I don't believe machine washing will remove the paint, so when it comes out of the washer/dryer, you'll still left with areas that won't absorb paint. Thanks so much for watching and asking!
Yes, I always use a spray fixative before varnishing. Here's a video on how I varnish art on paper. I use the same process for canvas/wood. Thank you! th-cam.com/video/KBg4GjajaPg/w-d-xo.html

That helps keep my color vibrant. If I don't want mud, I don't cross my warm and cool colors. I'll keep separate brushes handy. I hope that info helps!
How do you like the NOVA colors ? im thinking of trying them, i have been bounching around different paint brands. Love your work Betty.
I LOVE Nova paints! Try out their small 4 oz size to see what you think. Here's a link to the colors I use most: www.bettyfranksart.com/favorite-nova-color-paints
I love using inktense blocks and Art graf tailors squares
Cool! Love the inktense products. I haven't heard of Art graf tailors squares. I'll have to google that. Thanks so much for sharing, Kathy!
@@BettyFranksArt they are these intensely pigmented water soluble blocks from Art Graf. Only a few colors available but they are divine to make marks with that create deep shadows in whatever you use over them.
@@kathystewart2642 Thanks, Kathy!
Love your video d have not used a rigger but plan to
The rigger is one of my favorites and I use it in all my paintings--whether large or small!
I am trying to make similar to yours . Takes time and patience, right? My first cradle board came out ok.
Yes, definitely takes practice! I've been creating in this style since 2018. I've been having so much fun with it!
so very inspiring--thanks so so much!
Hi Betty, could you tell us how you seal your work? Especially when you have ink tense pencils and Woody's...
Thank you 🌷
Hi Jann, here's a video I created on how I varnish my art on paper. I use the same process for wood/canvas. Also, lately I've been using a fixatif spray instead of a spray varnish I show in the video. Either one works. th-cam.com/video/KBg4GjajaPg/w-d-xo.html
@@BettyFranksArt thank you! 🌻
Betty,
Does Nova still offer your color collection for purchase on their site?
Yes! You can get there through this link: www.bettyfranksart.com/favorite-nova-color-paints Thanks so much for asking!
❤️❤️❤️
I appreciate you watching this video!
Betty do you spray with a fixative before you varnish ?
Yes, I always use a spray fixative before varnishing. Here's a video on how I varnish art on paper. I use the same process for canvas/wood. Thank you! th-cam.com/video/KBg4GjajaPg/w-d-xo.html
Do you ever use stencils as John Beckley
I used to use stencils when I was creating mixed media art. I don't use them in my artwork now.
.Hi Betty,
I live in UK buying the nova paints to ship are
Way to expensive it's around €70 to just ship 4 small tubes.
I was wonder what your thoughts are on liquitex acrylic paints they do heavy body and basic
I would really appreciate your help.
Warmest Regards Shani
Liquitex is great! I have a few tubes I'm using (and trying to use up!).
@@BettyFranksArt thank you. Your art makes my heart beat
What is a stipple woody? I hope I heard that right. It looks like a fat pencil, is it water soluble?
Hi Penny! It's a Stabilo Woody. Here's a video I created that you may find helpful: th-cam.com/video/Rje8eUbHZ90/w-d-xo.html
And, here's the link to my favorite art supplies: www.bettyfranksart.com/my-favorite-art-supplies 🩷
Hi Betty - is this a hairdryer?
Hi Natasha! It's a heating tool. Here's a link to my Amazon store: www.amazon.com/shop/betty.franks.art/list/1ZS37QZW9KWHT?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d
Do you use transparent and opaque acrylics from Nova Color together?
Yes! I mix all my colors together regardless if they're opaque or transparent.
@@BettyFranksArt Have you ever done a piece with just transparent? Thanks.
I have not. I prefer to have a mix and I tend to lean towards opaque more.
How do you lnow when its finished? How do you paint soo fast?
Hi Theressa! I think knowing when it's finished comes with practice. I look for my values, composition, colors, etc. It's also a gut feel, too. I don't paint this fast. I sped up the video. 🥰 Thanks so much for watching!
