MEGAMIND and Nice Guy™ Syndrome

  • What is the difference between niceness and goodness? Megamind is all about one guy who doesn't understand the difference, and another who learns the difference.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about Nice Guy Syndrome, especially as seen in the character of Hal/Tighten (Jonah Hill) and how he thinks he deserves or can earn Roxanne's affection. But also how Megamind (Will Ferrell) learns what it really means to be good, how Roxanne (Tina Fey) and Metro Man (Brad Pitt) go against stereotypes, and the absolutely fabulous humor in this movie. They also give some advice for recovering "Nice Guys" or guys who realize they've maybe internalized some of these ideas, especially around romantic relationships, and want to actually be good instead of just "nice."

Megamind is a story about facades. Megamind created his evil persona as a way to push people away to hide how vulnerable he really is, whereas Hal created his nice guy persona to camouflage how despicable he is in an attempt to lure people closer.

I just want to say that you are very wise for quoting this out, and I commend you for your wisdom, this happens a lot in real life, hal was basically like Loki, deceiving everyone, and Megamind shows how people can choose to be better and open up so that they no longer feel pain and hurt alone

I think his "evil" persona comes from a combination of being adopted by literal criminals as well as society as a whole not really giving him any other real options. Seriously, who would hire him when everyone's already a little scared of him? "Evil" was just him filling the only available niche and he doesn't leave it until the end, when society "allowed" him to.
As for Hal, I don't think it's a "facade". I think he truly believes he's a "nice guy" and is simply doing what he believes "nice guys" are supposed to do. As soon as he gets powers, he uses them to try to get what he believes he's "owed" for being "nice".

@@solidskullz5736I don't think that was an act. All his life, he was told how awesome he was, so he really believed it. He likely quit because:
      1. He desired a challenge. Fighting Megamind wasn't a challenge. For his sanity, he needed something his powers wouldn't just make easy. That's why he chose music. Super speed and flight wouldn't make the guitar any easier.
      2. He knew Megamind wasn't a real threat to the citizen.
      3. Megamind wasn't interested in being evil. Megamind was only interested in having a purpose. Once Metroman left, he knew Megamind would eventually take his place as Metro City's guardian. After all, the only part of super villainy that Megamind truly liked was the rivalry aspect.

The interesting part to me is how Roxanne was always so kind to Hal despite his awkwardness and his selfishness. She was never dismissive or rude to him. Even in that tower scene where she's trying to explain to him what's going on, she never once raises her voice or gets impatient with him, it's him who gets worked up with her. And that's such a perfect depiction of real life. You can be so kind, and so polite, and it doesn't matter, because if someone has decided you owe them something, they're going to be angry at you just for existing if they don't get it.

Note: sorry my comment was getting long and I was getting tired, I'll finish writing my example later
You're right that books and nerdy things are nebulous, I was trying to make the point that the audience probably knows/cares more about her personality than Hal, but it was a bad example.
But judging by Hal's attitude and his actions throughout the film, he acts like someone who doesn't want to know who she is as a person, and is simply trying to win over an object. For example,
Roxanne seems to be generally open about herself, even to strangers or people who she has no romantic interest in. Remember how Roxanne had a negative opinion of Bernard at the beginning of the film in the museum elevator (she thought he was boring, similar to the way she felt about Hal). But that changes after Megamind enters Bernard's body and says something meaningful/profound (in Roxanne's opinion at least).
I know we saw Roxanne being uninterested in Hal even in the beginning of the movie, but that's because he's never talking about her interests (which he can just ask if he doesn't know) or even his own passions (which he doesn't have any and he should really get some). I wouldn't say "Want to come to my bouncy castle party" falls under either of these categories. He's always saying boring or borderline offensive things (to Roxanne's intelligence).
I know we have to make assumptions about how Roxanne treated Hal before the film, but based on Roxanne's personality and Hal's personality, I'd rather assume that Roxanne probably did give Hal a chance to be friends in the beginning, but Hal was too focused on getting in Roxanne's pants to actually get to know her.

It’s worth mentioning that it is left up to interpretation as to whether or not Megamind and Roxanne end up together. It’s implied, sure, but they also don’t outright say it. After Roxanne finds out that Megamind is disguising himself as Bernard, they don’t do anything romantic again. Sure, they hug, but hugs can absolutely be platonic and between two friends. Megamind and Roxanne always seem to have a truly organic connection - there's a definite degree of flirting between them in the initial scene, even if it's subconscious on Megamind's part (he wants her to think he's cool; fretting over his appearance and hoping she'll take him seriously as a threat vs comic relief) that Roxanne does play into somewhat (showing she's not genuinely afraid of him and arguably enjoys, if subconsciously, the attention he pays to her) then when he takes on the Bernard disguise he's actually able to be himself and they effortlessly connect and fall in love.
Hal on the other hand doesn't have any chemistry with Roxanne, doesn't know or care for what she likes or thinks, and just sees her as a prize/object of desire/a thing to feed his sense of self.

Care for her safety, and as minimal terror as possible. Because he values her as a person, and values her feelings, while Titan only values her as far as he can bully her into submission.

The traps etc are to give the illusion of danger FOR METROMAN, for him to treat this more urgently. They are all out of range to hurt her.
Even capturing her his concern is her safety (putting her into a safety car) because hurting her is not the plan. He has no desire to hurt her and they both know it. Hence why she snaps back at him because she feels safe enough to do it.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine ปีที่แล้ว +306

Basically Megamind is a good guy pretending to be a bad guy. Nothing he does in the movie is really directly harmful to anyone other then Metroman, and he didn't expect it to work in the first place.
In contrast, Metroman is an ordinary guy pretending to be a good guy. He fills the role, but he doesn't really feel the call to do good. He just wants to be left alone to live his life, mostly.
Then Titan is just a bad guy, and not a power-corrupts bad guy, he was bad from the beginning, but lacked the power to fully act on it.
Roxanne basically understands that Megamind isn't actually a threat. He's not going to kill her, or basically anyone else. Until she thinks he killed Metroman, it wasn't even serious.

She didn't like him at that point because he chose to be a pariah and to wallow in misery. I think she was able to forgive his lie more because she knew that he had always been wearing somebody elses face. More because of a long time understanding of who he was than because of anything to do with Hal.
It needed maybe another ten minutes or so to flesh out the process of her moving on from his lie and him earning her trust, but everything they needed for that moment was in it from the very first moment they met, long before the events of the movie, it was already part of their characters and their chemistry.

You can’t expect a good outcome if you give a person who is being bully the same powers as superman, that person is going to use his powers get back as bullies but without training a self control that person is going to hurt his would be bullies. Not on the roof of a tall building where she can get down - on a spire where she’s left completely stranded. Something I don’t think many people notice is how Megamind is giving the “all your gifts and you squander them for personal gain” spiel to Hal when he finds out he wants to become a villain
You could just attribute it to him wanting Hal to be the good guy, but it can also be an ironic realization about Megamind’s bad guy nature, like he realizes the problem with his own *desire* to be a bad guy, adding another push to his drive to eventually become a good guy

Megamind is pretending to be a villain because that's what's expected of him, Hal becomes a villain because that's who he truly is inside.
MM never actually wanted to hurt Roxanne, and even with Metroman (who he hated since childhood) he never felt downright malicious.
Hal is an awkward, self-centered, ignorant weasel from the beginning. But he had no power to act on any of his delusions until he became Titan. He actually became bloodthirsty after Megamind taunted him, and it was scary.

When things don't go as he wants them to he becomes violent (he's beating the car, and really aggressively). And then, when due to his own actions he gets hurt (hurt his hand) he blames others ("stupid car!"). It's played for laughs here but it's a great indicator to what's to come.

You have to TEACH toddlers not to hit other kids, you have to TEACH your toddler to share, you have to TEACH your toddler not to throw a tantrum when they don't get their way. People are born selfish and entitled. They have to be TAUGHT goodness. That's why so many children turn out badly, because their parents don't want to take the time to actually parent and teach their children. If children were born good you wouldn't have to teach your kids not to hit other kids, you wouldn't have to teach your children to share, that would be the default setting. They would only hit if they saw their parents hitting each other or if they got hit themselves. But that just isn't the case.

Our ancient ancestors had to learn to not be selfish because if they didn’t, they would be kicked out of social groups and almost certainly die because of it.

Remember when Metroman told him copper weakened his powers and Megamind floundered because he wasn't sure exactly how to respond to the concept that he was actually at an advantage? @@quantumvideoscz2052 I can definitely see where it came from, honestly. Social norms are this really weird dance that doesn't make much of any sense sometimes, and so some people (like myself sometimes, unfortunately) try to figure them out using logic. But people don't always follow the norms, and you can't expect them to- that's where Hal went wrong. He, and people like him, try and memorize the patterns of what makes people do certain things, and they get mad when that doesn't work- it should've followed the pattern; why didn't it?
Mind you, I'm not saying that's a valid way of doing things. Don't look at people as parts of some machine; they're just not. They have their own emotions and wants, and that's what that viewpoint forgets.

She's not scared of Megamind since she's come to learn he's not a threat to her, and even trash-talks him, but when faced with Tighten she, while still being fairly tough, genuinely does show fear and become afraid of him. I think part of what makes Hal such a brilliant portrayal of the "nice guy" problem is how Megamind behaves in contrast. He pays attention to Roxanne and tries to make her happy. Her, specifically, as an individual. For example, he cleans up the whole city because he notices how sad she is to see the park covered in litter.
By contrast, Hal doesn't try to get to know Roxanne. He sees her as a girl he likes and that's all. "I didn't know what kind of flowers you liked, so I got you all of them." "Girls don't like bouncy houses, they like clowns!" Et cetera. Roxanne could have been literally any woman he thought was attractive and he would have behaved exactly the same way.
At the end of the day, Megamind sees Roxanne as an individual and develops an honest connection to her, while Hal fails to see Roxanne as a person - so not only does he not try to understand her, but he is completely flabbergasted when she doesn't react positively to the reveal that he's got superpowers. For someone who has known her for years, you'd think Hal would understand her basic personality.

I actually think that they *did* justify why Roxanne did eventually go towards Megamind in the end.
Yes, Megamind *did* lie to her, but... what was he supposed to do? He had been pidgeonholed as a villain since his coming to the planet. He was "destined" to be the bad guy. He enjoyed the showyness of his tango with Metroman, but it was never who Megamind was. When he masqueraded as Bernard? That gave him the chance to show himself, not as some persona, but as him. That's what Roxanne fell for.
I think one of the biggest confusions is that "Bernard" wasn't another persona that he was taking, it was just Megamind. It was him in a state where he could be vulnerable. A time where in which he could try to not be seen as a monster. When he was exposed, I think what he did next was the most telling. He didn't try to go back to her, try to convince her past when she left. He... just went back to being what the world wanted him to be. A villain.
Then when he came in and saved Roxanne? He saved her not because of some advantage or some manipulation. No, he saved her because, like it or not in his mind, he *cared* about her. It even comes back in after how Metro Man was revealed to still be alive and that Megamind needed to be the hero, he didn't initally. He decided to disguise himself as Metro Man, so that the city could HAVE that hero.
Then comes the scene where in which Tighten was initially scared off. The city believed that it was Metro Man, but Roxanne? She knew better. She had seen something that well... no one else had at that point. Like it or not, she got to really know Megamind when he was "Bernard", and... well- she chose to accept him for him. She decided to let the whole CITY see- as because by that point- she realized that Megamind wasn't a villain at heart.
Megamind is a complex character, someone who's motivations were based off trying to fit in, unsure what his destiny was. The world put him into the shoes of a villain, an superficially exciting life to be sure, but it was only a show. A show that grew old the second that he had *won*. Then by an entire accident, he gets to see someone else view him in a way that wasn't... just "that blue alien man from prison". Sure, it was out of deceit by the end of that façade, but he was given a light into... being *normal*! He liked it- and Roxanne was charmed by the man behind the many personas that he had. Him disguising himself as Bernard wasn't right, that was something that was made very clear by Roxanne, who rightfully was mad at him. Yet, he didn't hold any animosity against her, he even saved her once she was in danger from the monster he inadvertently created. Then learning that the hero that he had been facing for so long- had just given up when they needed him the most? It broke him. He had fucked everything up in his view, and he needed to go where belonged, back in the prison. Then, he was given a chance to right his wrongs, which he did, first in a last ditch attempt to create a persona with Metroman. Then finally, as himself.
Roxanne didn't decide to go back to a guy just because he was "smart", or because he was "the hero" now. No, she decided to go back to a guy who she genuinely liked, and didn't give a genuine chance for him to be who he always was.
Hell, that last date scene even eluded to it- his question if she'd still like him even if he was... different, and blue. She gave the answer in the end as a yes.

As a rule, I don't date people who punch walls when they get mad. If their first impulse to cope with bad feelings is violence and destruction, that's not a good sign

What if they start dancing in the "I'm mad but can't throw my controller" gamer rage?

Good rule. I'm that guy. I've spent a long time trying to fix that, but I'll be the first to admit, it's not a good sign.

If they were to punch past me like punch a wall behind me I would not be okay with it. But like just hitting a wall doesn’t bother me. With two really horribly mentally abusive parents, I never had an outlet for the amount I was put through and used to hit the shit out of the walls. Just to purge some of the emotional rage that there was no way to actually resolve. As an adult in a good relationship, it happens so infrequently because I he’s open to real communication and active change. But on like really serious ones I’ll still walk away from the conversation and just hit a door frame. Just to let out the feelings that are so intense that I can’t express in a helpful way. So I do give some nuance to people who hit shit because sometimes it’s habit, or the way you had to be as a kid, or you just knowing that you have so many bubbling emotions that if you were to try to talk through them, they would be yell-y or emotionally incoherent or just mean sometimes. My best friend’s dad shot himself when my friend was 7 and he was told he’d have to be the man of the house from then on. So he learned to lock all his feelings up so he could be there for him mom and older sister and little brother. As an adult, particularly when he learns about women being mistreated by men (thats his kryptonite), he will talk a walk in the woods, find a fallen tree, and just hit it for a while. Much like if you were to go to the gym and hit a punching bag for a while to release some stress and anger. I think it works. But like no, if a man is yelling in your face and punches the wall right next to you, or raises his fist at you, or raises it at you and then turns around and hit something else. Fucking run.

HAH you would hate me then, because I'm impulsive as hell due to my adhd and my first response to anger is to let it out back to the outside world, which comes from having abusive parents.
I'm doing therapy for this though, so now I'm communicating a lot, but when people step on this often enough, I still tend to verbally lash out rather than walking away from the situation.
I don't have nice gal syndrome, at the very least I can say that.

My dad had a quote about "learning to be good," when you've been taught to be bad: "The point of trying to be good isn’t to get something in return. It’s to stop putting unneeded negativity back into the world. Being good for the sake of goodness, because goodness is, in itself, worth creating."
