I didn't read through all the comments, so maybe this was mentioned. I owned at one time or another every one of the turbo Mopar engines save the Maserati head.
I was good friends with Ed Peters. I got out of SDs and he got into the Neons and we lost touch. He and another source both told me that the 224 hp for the T3 was conservative and that they had run a dyno test where a stock T3 was putting down 240hp at the wheels. The T3 timing belt issue was due to the springs used on the Lotus head. I recall the resolution to that, which Mopar never implemented, was to use lower rate springs. I believe that Tim Pettijohn used to offer spring sets. Sold my Spirit RT to Neil Emiro.
As for the T4 coking issues, Chrysler had a fix, it was not an expensive fix, and never did it. I did not hear mention of the T4 Shadows or Daytonas. Not many of either were produced and are likely rarer than the LeBaron T4 cars.
I had a lot of fun with these cars and met a lot of good people.

I am SO happy they had Maserati stuff to show! It's so rare (501 produced) that hardly anyone has it. So, if you look at that head it has "COSCAST" on it because it was cast by Cosworth (designed by Maserati). That head will outflow the Lotus head, but the cams are TINY. Interesting bit about the cams, they are interchangeable intake to exhaust. The ENTIRE bottom end of that engine is forged. They didn't show it, but the rods are by CASAR. The compression ratio is 7.3:1. Turbo is an IHI RB52. Engine was rated at 200hp/220tq (more torque than the T3). That transmission is a Getrag 284. Supposedly it was originally designed for the mid-engine Corvette back in the 80's but we all know how that went. It was used in the TC and a handful of GM cars. Funny thing is, you can NOT get service parts for it. Getrag doesn't even acknowledge they built the thing! Anyways, if you want to experience one that runs, LMK. You are not far from me at the moment and you have to come back through my way to get home.

Back in the early 00s I bought my first turbo car, a 1990 Dodge Spirit turbo. It was a 2.5 T1 with the TE04H, no intercooler, and an auto trans for $500 from the dealership that I worked for. It was parked in what we called "Cash Row". A bunch of cars that didn't run. I put a new timing belt on it, my uncle told me, "you'll NEVER get that thing running," and an hour later it fired up and ran perfectly. Shortly after I had to replace the transmission. I got a tranny for $50 and paid my buddy a case of beer to replace it for me. That was before I really started working on cars. It had 160k miles on it and it spun a bearing while I was going around a turn under boost. It had the computer in the center console and no heat in the winter which was fun. I had already seen the Donovan turbo van footage and instructions of how to modify the Dodge turbo cars, but I hadn't gotten the chance to do anything to it yet when it blew.

In 1994 I got a 1989 Dodge Lancer ES Turbo with the T1 2.5l (same as yours) and an auto. Mopar Performance computer, Eibach springs, and Koni struts made it much better. It was a clean car with only 67,000 miles, but faded roof pain. A great 1st car that I cleaned and detailed so much. Rear tint too.

Richard, just a little trivia for you....ONLY 132 of those '90 Lebaron GTC VNT Convertibles were made and even more rare were 123 Lebaron GTC coupes for the same year. So a grand total of 255 Lebaron GTC cars for 1990. All 5 speeds aka A568 transmission. These Turbo Dodges are so cool...I'm biased...grew up racing and driving them!
Oh and I came back to add, Thank you for allowing me to discover The Car Farm !

  • @amoparx
    @amoparx ปีที่แล้ว

Great video. It's nice to hear the correct info. As for the Lebaron's having a TII engine, It was said the GTS did. I don't know much about the GTS's. but the Lebaron GTS that had that engine would only be a 5 speed '89. And very limited. I couldn't hear what was said about the 2dr Lebaron's because someone was talking over someone else. The '89 GTC's were available with the TII. These were all a555 transmission 5 speeds (like the Daytona Shelby's) There were 906 convertibles and 1033 coupes made with the TII option. Probably my favorite car that I own ('89 GTC convert) and I own two '87 GLHS Shelby's.

The first thing to do on these if you get the early ones is to drill out the 10mm head bolt threads and retap to 11mm. Have to drill the bolt holes in the head too.
Even the much better ARP 11mm head studs were a "Use it once" torque to yield.
Bottom tap the block threads too and radius the tops to eliminate stress cracks at higher torque.

I was torn between the Sunbird Turbo and the Omni GLHS. I wanted a turbo sleeper. I was leaning towards the Omni because it was a little quicker and then I saw the new for '87 Formula Firebird with the newly available 350 TPI. I bought it instead. The best mod of all was going to 11mm headbolts. They should have gone even bigger.
ARP studs yielded to torq on first assy. Then they were junk, non-reusable.
*That's the weak point on those T cars.* Other than that, they are really very stout. Forged pistons would have been nice. I had mine built by Ross, and they are great. Adds a bit of confidence when you're up against a Grand National. 😉
Even copper head gaskets with 'O' rings would fail if you really got it on.

Ive been a big fan of Dodge FWD Turbo cars since roughly 92. I have an 86 GHLS #329. The car in my opinion defines the fun driving experience. Also have an 04 SRT. I'm excited you're covering this on your channel.

Fun Fact: You can use the Turbo II exhaust manifold and Turbo on a T1, but in order to use a Turbo I Turbo and manifold on a Turbo II, you have to clearance the exhaust manifold to clear an intake manifold runner, and then change the compressor housing to the blow through set up. The Draw Through Turbo 1 2.2 cars and the Turbo 2 cars both used the same turbocharger, a Garrett T03, with the only difference being the wastegate and compressor housing used on the Turbo 2 cars. The blow-through Turbo 1 2.5 cars used a smaller Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger instead, an easy upgrade is to bolt a Garrett on in its place.

They wrote an entire book for the dealerships on how to deal with the "discerning" TC by Maserati customer. Basically in less words it tells the sales and service teams to walk on eggshells because they are mostly huge brats. Who can blame them though? They had just paid $33k for a car in 1989!! So getting an engine into the customers car right away was top priority. The "discerning" customer will not accept service wait times longer than a couple of days. Make sure to provide them with a loaner car that is a top trim Lebaron personal luxury convertible!

Early ones did between the core plugs in the spark plug valley. They can be fixed and it doesn't hurt performance. 2 theories on why it happened. Steel plugs and too tight on the torque.

Rich you need to install a trucool 40k transmission cooler and bypass the radiator cooler

    • @muimasmacho
      @muimasmacho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Radiator cooler is much more effective.
Quenching with water is far superior to air cooling, even if the water is hot.
Take a red hot spoon and waft it around in the air and see how that goes.
Then reheat the spoon and quench it in hot coffee and see what happens.
(I was an automatic trans tech for 35 years.)
Aftermarket trans coolers aren't really necessary.
You just don't want the fluid to boil, because then it oxydizes and turns to varnish.
A torque converter will get really HOT, 400° plus is not uncommon. But it's under pressure and can't boil.
The fluid then exits the TC and gets quenched to engine temp by the radiator cooler, and then it's returned to the trans and is used for lubrication.
I do NOT recommend using an air cooler all by itself.
If you feel you must add an air cooler, place it in the return line between the rad cooler and the trans. That will cool it lower than engine temp.
And use brass unions to make the connections, DO NOT USE RUBBER TUBING and hose clamps.
      Just sayin' 😶

@@muimasmacho while i tend to agree with you, every auto i have run in the last 10 years has had a quality large standalone cooler. And all have operated well and stayed below operating temps they saw with the in radiator "cooler".
I guess having bad experiences with failed waterbath coolers leaking and taking out 3 perfectly working transmissions by filling them with antifreeze i just dont trust them any more.
Could an air only one leak? Sure, but it wont turn the atf to pink pudding and ruin the clutches.

It certainly can happen, but it's very very rare.
