Torque steer in not caused by uneven CV shafts. I raced a 600hp version of same platform with uneven shafts and it goes down the quarter mile in nine seconds, like going to the grocery store. It's the suspension setup. What's causing most of the torque steer is the play in the rubber suspension mounts and not having enough toe out. Under heavy load, the rubber compresses changing the suspension geometry and causing huge amounts of toe in. I changed the rubber to heim joints and gave it a touch of toe out. Straight as an arrow every time.

This was part of the Chrysler Corporation's magic: prior to the Viper, they never had a halo performance vehicle. This allowed their amazing engineers to do crazy things like stuff their biggest power engine into their cheapest $#!+box and give it suspension mods to match - or, back in the 60s, create a compact sedan with an engine that killed an entire racing series (see NASCAR Compact Car Series.)
It's part of the magic when the GLH series L-bodies - the hottest hatches of the 1980s - gave way to the amazing Neon SRT/ACR vehicles, which are still to be feared when they show up on race day.
If you can find a top condition L-body Omni, please go for it; among small cars, they were the big boys, and could seat 4 adults in comfort, while proving a level of chassis stiffness and subsequent performance the K-platform simply could not match.
Even today, despite the New Hemi's endemic flaws, it tickles me to see such awesome silliness as the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk alongside the Hellcat Challengers and Chargers. Chrysler's unofficial slogan really should be "Big Power For Everybody."

They kept the price (and the weight) down by eliminating all the options that we take for granted today.

I've been around these cars my entire life. We own a multitude of the Shelby Dodges. Four CSX's, One GLHS Omni, two GLHS Chargers, a Shelby Charger, a Shelby Dakota and some more turbo dodges. The GLHS and GLH cars including the Charger which is the same chassis - don't have un-equal length axles. What I suspect happened was the guy who built this car didn't do things right. He went to a later trans and used un-equal auto axles for the car which is a huge problem when talking about the torque numbers these cars make. Also there should be no dead-zone in the steering as these cars have racing steering boxes that are fantastic. It makes me again believe it's not built right. The person went straight for power and didn't do other mods or maintenance that he car needs. One day you'll have my twin brother and my car on your channel and you'll get a great feel of how these cars are supposed to be.

Love the test...I've got a 85 GLH converted to a Turbo II with 87 Shelby Z transplant...mines pretty spicy with a little over 200 hp. I'm not looking for 470 HP, but would like to settle on 320-350 hp. The Turbo II in my 87 Daytona Shelby Z...is closer to 300 HP, but needs me to get it back to road worthy and some fine tuning. I've also got an 87 Shelby Charger...which I think I'm going to transplant a SRT4 engine in. SDAC is a great club dedicated to these beauties, been a member for 20+ years!! Just wish FCA built that SRT4, GTS, or GLH (a proper one) Dart that was promised. I had to settle for a GT and go from there. @ThatDudeinBlue, Thanks for the review, also like the E36 M3 with the ActiveAutowerke supercharger. Looking forward to getting mine (98 E36 M3 Dinan) AA supercharged someday. That thing with 400 HP will be a beast. Still not quicker than the GLH or Shelby Z!

The hood on that Glh has been replaced because all the (Turbo)85-87 Glh and Glhs had a flat vent (no scoop) over turbo area, back of the hood off center towards passenger side, to help let out all heat generated by the turbo to escape. I had an all black '86 Glh turbo-1 - (146h.p.) stock
6 or 7 psi max boost..
Yours driven & featured has a turbo-2 (86 and up) and standard on Glhs models (those were "Goes like hell some more") set up (175 h.p. stock) turbo 2 were also intercooled and breath through 2 piece intake, bigger throttle body and bigger air box.. The Glhs were only made 500 each year offered, and had a Shelby autographed numbered plaque on passenger side dash I put the Direct Connection Mopar performance before Mopar performance name took over (same computer as the Shelby Glhs. turbo-2 computer) in mine and boosted to 12-14 psi of max boost raised redline and fuel and spark curves also put the mopar performance purple shaft turbo cam biggest they offered for turbo car .. I think it's because the GLH was the ultimate hot hatch of its day. Blow the doors off of small block mobiles, go pick up your girl with her groceries, then laugh at fuel stations all the way home.
If you are keen to tinker with it, there's a lot of meat left on the bone of its tune. The main thing lacking is suspension/brake R&D which you'll have to research and get creative.

These were the original SRT-4 before SRT was a thing. What Dodge learned from cars like this and the Spirit R/T helped create the SRT-4 Neon and Caliber that people know about and these OG Turbo FWD MOPAR's are sadly forgotten. Sure they are slow by todays standards if you can even find one, but as you can see the 2.2L and 2.5L 4-cyl engines can be very strong with a larger turbo and some forged internals. They are simple to work on also. The hardest part is finding someone who can tune the OBD1 or just swap to a standalone system. I used to hate these things when I was a teenager in the 90's. Now everyone loves hatchbacks. I'm more of a late 80's - early 00's car enthusiast and now I would love to have one and modify it, and then go show the local subaru and Mazdaspeed crowd the tail lights.

I loved Omni's back in the 80's. Plus these cars came out when US car makers thought they weren't going to be allowed to build anything other than 4 cylinder cars because of government regulations. If the crackdown had happened, the Mustang SVO would've been king of the hill for years.

My dad trusted me, and I often had the opportunity to drive the new 'family' car. I don't think my mom (who never drove it) knew that this little VW Rabbit-like box was a turbo-charged sports car and not really a family sedan. It was a blast for a youngster like myself and I will always have fond memories of our fast little "wolf in sheep's clothing" on the open Arizona highways! Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) was produced between 84-86 and it had the Chrysler Turbo I engine with was rated at 146 HP.
In 1986, they introduced the Shelby GLH-S (Goes Like Hell S'more) with an intercooler, new intake manifold, throttle body, and piping, larger injectors and of course a new tune. This bumped the HP to around 175 HP. These cars are numbered individually (1-500) and are more collectible.

I beg to differ. Front wheel drive cars, for this era (80’s), didn’t have the technology to compete with rear wheel drive cars, on the track. I recall they were limited to 200bhp max, whereas rear drive were not. The modern Honda Type R addressed the fwd torque steer problem with suspension geometry - steering axis scrub radius. And traction control electronics. This technology simply didn’t exist in the 80’s.

Quirky cars like this are the best. And the communities for them are great. I’d love to see some of the not so well known cars Shelby was involved in.
My first car was a 1989 merkur XR4Ti. I loved that car. I just picked up another from my uncle a few months ago. While neither of mine have been particularly fast, it’s really fun to do 2nd and 3rd pulls in them, drop a gear right into boost and fly. The lag makes them fun too.
There’s also the experience of stopping at gas stations and having people walk over and ask what it is, or saying “I test drove one of those back in the day.” Or “my uncle had one.” Or “my father test drove one and then bought a turbo coupe.”
You feel like you’re driving a piece of history. Especially since there are less than 1100 of them registered in the United States now, and less than 50000 ever imported.

My first car was an ‘84 5 speed Omni that I saved from the junkers. It was 1991 and I bought it for $200 from a little old lady who did not notice the oil light was on and, whilst traveling down the interstate, sent the rod through the piston. I picked up a wrecked Shelby Charger (with the optional carbureted HO engine) as a donor car. With Haynes as my bible and my father as my occasional Sherpa, I taught myself general mechanics and swapped the engine and other components out. I also learned sewing and how to do upholstery, electrical work, welding, and body work/painting due to that car and the various customizations I made. I became a regular at the pick and pull. It was a fast little bugger, and I dearly loved that Frankenstein’s monster.
Sadly, after putting nearly 100,000 miles on the odometer, I made the uniformed decision to sell it in late ‘98 to buy my first new car - a ‘99 Dodge Neon RT. 🙄
My little Omelette was the gateway drug to modding, tuning, and customizing. I’m on the higher end of my forties now and still think about that car at least a few times a month. I’ve flirted with buying a GLH or GLHS the few times I’ve seen one come up for sale. Someday, if the right one comes along, I probably will.

    Dude, Great Video!
Next time, when you're in a 5 speed like that, perhaps: PUT TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL!!!
You ought to only need to take your hand off when you shift!!!!
I think that is why you're all over the road.
Also, remember that water is a byproduct of combustion --- a camera right behind a side dump exhaust might not be the best idea.
Btw: About 15 years ago, at the local friday night corner races there was a guy who had one these swapped with the larger 2.4 or w/e block, a neon cylinder head or something, a huge snail and one of those front valence things on it.
Pretty much nobody knew what it was and he was just cleaning up, taking on all comers and upsetting everyone with his little monster sleeper hatch.... with the 'piece de resistance' being when he easily licked a boosted Viper. Lmao.
The craziest part however is even though the car was front wheel drive the thing pulled so hard and the shifting was so violent that after pretty much every launch and shift into 2and and 3rd the front of the car would be up so high and would come droping down so hard the front valence would smash the ground.
It was one hell of a sight and sound hearing that blow off valve punctuated with that crunch-scrape nastiness.
It didn't take long for everyone to be afraid and refuse to race any black 4 door hatch that so much as resembled whatever that "GLH" "OMNI" mystery machine was.
The next year the same guy showed up but this time he had one of those boxy turbo ~85 Dodge Caravans... he had a 5 speed swap in it and the throw on the giant shifter had to be something like 12-18 inches. I think he even extended it for effect. Lmao.
That van was uglier than sin but boy was it fast, faster than the omni somehow...and just watching him He-Man throw those shifts like he was rowing some kind of evil boat was an absolute blast.
The thing was much more of a sleeper this time though and he was embarrassing corvettes, boosted v8's and big blocks and AWD DSM's, and WRX's left and right.
Like literally everything, and then he just drove away into the sunrise and I believe no one ever saw him again.

My parents’ first car in America was an Omni. Not sure if it was a GLH though. It’s awesome to see someone did one up!
