YES I AGREE SO MUCH with sketching with paint . i honestly dispise pensil sketching its so boring and precise and accuate and its like calm down im just trying to have fun. wacky proportions are just part of the experience hahah ur litterally the only other person i have found who feels like this i feel so seen lmao

You should look into getting acrylic paint retardant. It's a medium that thins out your paint without making it watery. If you put in a very little bit it does take a bit longer to dry but not enough to make a noticeable difference patience wise.
My personal approach is to look at as many influences as possible, and combine things that aren’t necessarily seen together. For example, I used illustration cues from 20th century American children’s illustrations and mixed it with anime :)
do you think it would be possible to do a tutorial on your pieces such as ‘time warp’ & ‘the liminal space between nothing and everything’? i’ve seen you do that style on a few of your paintings and would love to know the process behind them! :)
i agree 10000000% with the grid thing, also imho it doesn't really teach you to train your artistic eye if you use the grid method. it's time consuming and i also think that you're limiting yourself cause you're basically copying tiny bits of the picture and not looking at it as a whole picture and it's sort of like a crutch
