    This video has changed my life! I have had deep groin pain on and off for about 3 months without being able to attain lasting release of the tension. Most of the techniques I tried had no lasting effect or made it worse. I laid on a lacrosse ball for about a minute using the placement from your video. It has been just remarkable, thank you!

    This is great! I've been suffering in my psoas for years and have been currently experiencing a bigger than usual flare up. I just tried this on myself to the extent I could and it already helped. I so appreciate the post!!!

      @@BrittKatSlat sometimes it burns deep in my abdomen and it pulls on by quads and gives me pain at the front bottom of my knee. My foot will hurt too. It just triggers everything on that side. When it releases all of the other stuff gets better.

      Hi Karly. How long and how reps did you do this technique? Did you heal completely and resume to normal life? How did you do by yourself or did someone help you?     Excellent video, I had a suggestion when you cue him to take a diaphragmatic breath. Tight hip flexors also inhibit the abdominal muscles, in serious cases, preventing them from firing at all. It is very likely that some people may not even know what a diaphragmatic breath feels like. I remembered the first time I actually took a diaphragmatic breath, it was profound, almost like learning how to whistle.

    Will psoas be a recommended option to adults whom are disabled with orthopedic posture failure, and psychosis and recently schizophrenic , with my condition what will you recommend.

    I was diagnosed by a physiotherapist for a iliopsaos muscle injury from football. That was 1 year ago.. But the pain is present with some activities and I am not able to resume football again. Do you think massage guns for deep massaging can help relief the pain? Thanks

      It’s not really possible to say without a full medical history and thorough examination. You need to see a different Physio if it’s still not resolved

      There are several components to relieving back pain pain at home. One resource I found which succeeds in merging these is the Fergs pain ease (google it if you're interested) definately the best guide i've seen. look at all the interesting information .

    great vido but why put your hand up on proxmmal hamstring and what is the physiology of this technique

      The hand is used as a fulcrum to check passive hip extension so the lumbar spine doesn't extend either. Physiology is to use diaphragmatic breathing to decrease tone in the flexors to improve hip extension by decreasing perception of stretch.

      Sorry. You are only supposed to use very light pressure. This is a pain free version of the normally aggressive technique. I don’t use more than several ounces of force

    this patient didnt seem to bad off to me this is cronic with me i get alot of swelling which takes along time to aleaviate why do i get bad inflamation which tilts me to the left and some people dont

      Axiom usually repeated motions in the new range regularly throughout the day will keep it.

    What do you suggest for permanently fixing this? Strengthening or stretching? Both?

      It's usually a matter of strengthening. Stretching over and over just gives temporary relief. Many "tight" hip flexors are really just weak hip flexors.

      @@modernmanualtherapy Thanks, I've had success with my back this way. So strengthen the psoas? I also have "snapping hip" on the right psoas (physio said it was the psoas flicking over the hip bone).

      @@Ev-eq8zn I can't say exactly what you should do without a full history and thorough examination. Strengthening the hip flexors is a good start, but that's all I can really say based on simple messaging.

    Thankyou . My whole right side is constantly in spasm and causes pain down inner groin ,hip lower and upper abdomen feeling like its pulling down right side chest area and diaphragm right. Hence causes issues breathing and being able to relax. Someone once was able to release the psoas it was painful bu5 i felt it spasm then was like instant relief and was feeling great and calm for first time in years. That massage person went out of work and never found anyone like oesteo or myrotheapists or sports massager who can do that. They try but the relief only lasts for a day then im all twisted back up again. I do all these exercises but nothing seems to work. Do i need to release the psoas before stretching it maybe? Using the elastic and doing the leg stretch in this makes my leg shake uncontrollably. Is this due to the weakness or spasmed psoas?

      If the relief lasts a day you just need the right exercises or movements to do repeatedly throughout the day to keep it. I can’t say which ones to do without a thorough history and examination

      @@modernmanualtherapy If the Relief just lasted a day , and if the pain comes back , would you personally recommend a second psoas or would you do something else if we were to complain on this unsuccessful 1 day relief treatment, why call it Relief if it doesn't Relief over 1 day?????

      @@juancarlosmaciasmartinez5896 all manual therapy techniques, when they work give rapid, and TEMPORARY relief. Anything that gives relief for hours can be extended. It's not about the technique that is done, but the program that is followed that continues to extend the relief and self treat for home.

    I have a question. Why doesn't the technique for psoas release implement directly behind, that is low back?
    After all, the psoas originates from the Lumbar spine, doesn't it?
    I can not tell from the difference.

      We're not really "targeting" the psoas, just using breathing and light pressure to decrease tone and perception of stretch. Also, if the abdomen is much softer than the erectors, so if you want to target it, and YOU SHOULDN'T, you'd need to go anterior.

      @@daves9355 There's no worry. It's just that you can't "target" it - it's behind too much viscera - you're mobilizing tons of other tissues. No one ever needs to go that deep, it could potentially be dangerous. Have I done it in the past and taught it incorrectly (as is currently taught) sure, did it improve hip pain and lumbar mobility etc, sure. Does it need to be done the way it's normally taught? Absolutely not. if I can give it up, and completely change the way I taught it and perform the technique anyone can.

    I have so much psoas pain but I can’t tolerate my stomach being touched. I get so ticklish and it feels so awful.

      No one really needs to have a psoas release done specifically. It rarely is a cause of pain and you need to be evaluated by a good doctor of PT and not a clinician that blames the psoas for pain/issues.

    When the patient was laying supine and you were putting pressure into the postero-proximal aspect of the femur, was that for release at the lesser trochanter, I.e. the insertion for the iliopsoas?

      Impossible to be specific and really target any part of a muscle. It just inhibits the muscle due to the pressure and the slow exhalation.

      Neither. I'm only changing perception of tightness with breathing. You should never go deep enough to actually compress the muscle. Listen to the video

      Omgosh me too Amber. I can’t lay down flat on my back. I have to hVe my legs up. No doctor figured out it was my psoas. I had to do a LOT of tedious research!!

    Does anyone have a problem laying down flat because of their tight psoas? I do and it sucks. I have to have my knees up when u lay down flat.

      You shouldn't. Try light isometric hip extension or bridges. Should inhibit and relax your hip flexors. Or just lie down with a pillow under your thighs (not knees)

      @@modernmanualtherapy No, i wasnt asking if it was or not- i was trying to look for other’s with my situation. Ive had MRI’s and X rays and the only problem that cna be found is my super tight psoas. I squirm when anyone tried to palpate the areas around ti. It’s so tight/short that it’s causing degenerative discs at the age of 34z

      @@BrittKatSlat You've been given incorrect information. Muscles don't "get short" and cause pain. No one needs to have deep psoas release, which is why I do a pain free one. Read this ebook written by my colleague on recovery. It explains myths like core weakness, scan findings, etc - degenerative discs are a common finding on scans, like gray hairs on the inside - here's the book edrss.com/rs

      @@modernmanualtherapy Well, thankyou for your help, first of all. I very much appreciate it. I feel though that you’re making a blanket statement. I had a scan for a different reason 2 years ago and no degenerative discs were seen. Then i started getting this pain nearly a year ago and boom- discs start waring. Could be coincidences for sure but i cant even stand straight now- that’s how bad it is. And the areas that you can feel my psoas- are super painful and tight. No other issue is wrong with me. So, id love to read the book. Thanks ill take a look.

      @@modernmanualtherapy Also- im confused when you say “pain free one” in regards to noone needs to have their psoas released- so what is the pain free “one” though? Everytime a massage therapist has palpated the areas of the psoas- it is the only relief i have. Temporary tho. So, if it’s not my psoas- what do you think it is?

I teach manual Therapy for a living for over 20 years and acknowledge it's just a means to an end. Any improvement manual Therapy can make can absolutely be replicated with the right self treatments.

      Yeah, it's called a demonstration. The technique is pain free. He is a class participant, no a patient in pain.

    Several things wrong with this... You can't belly breathe and "not move your chest." You most certainly cannot palate the psoas with it being under the abdominal wall and the digestive system (you were too high up to be anywhere near the pelvic portion). That will do for now.

      Thanks for the critique. You can't palpate the psoas at all. If you understood the context of the video, the entire point is to inhibit it with breathing. The "palpation" is just the point of awareness and the exhalation phase inhibits it. There is no psoas "release" you can't release anything (meaning change of length - at lesat rapidly), just change perception and tone. I wasn't palpating, only drawing awareness to perception of tightness. So if you even think you can palpate the psoas, you're incorrect. Don't bother, no need to ever go that deep if we can't change tissues mechanically. Perception is the only thing we can change.

    Instead of doing this crap, just let the individual lay on his back with thighs raised vertically, bent knees at 90 degree, calves resting on a gym ball. Make them perform small movements of the knees toward their chest and back (rolling the ball back and forth). After performing this for 10-15 minutes pretty much every muscle from abdomen downwards will release, not just the psoas.
    P.S. No trained PT required.

      "This crap" provides relief to people who aren't able to do what you described. Anyone can have problems with their psoas, not just athletes. Even those who are disabled.
