Jaw - Hips - Pelvis Connection. Understand about the anatomy and link between jaw and hip tension 💙

  • •Explore the anatomy and connections between the jaw, hips and pelvis. Did you know that if you have jaw tension, you could help it by releasing tension in the hips? And if your hips are tight, loosening tension in the jaw could help?
    It has long been known in Chinese medicine that the two are linked, but recent scientific studies and research have shown that there really is a connection. Here I take you through some of the links to consider when we're thinking about the body.
    Although this could be useful for anyone, it's particularly useful for singers as jaw tension can be a big hinderance when improving your singing technique.

    When I was preparing to labor with my second child, I ran into exceptional advice and it was all I could think of during labor: keep your jaw relaxed. During each contraction that was the only thing I focused on, keeping my jaw soft. From start to finish labor lasted 4 hours and I attribute that to keeping my jaw relaxed. Needless to say, this makes a lot of sense to me!

    I was in choir as a kid and teenager, and they would tell me to breathe with my diaphragm. I was physically incapable and couldn't figure out why for years. I only recently found out it's because my hips were tight and pulling on my diaphragm and keeping it from being able to contract and relax naturally. Doing some hip flexor stretches immediately improves my diaphragm function everyday. I'm so curious if anyone else has had this issue. I feel like I'm the only one.

    • @VoxYoga

      'Breathe with the diaphragm' can be a difficult direction to follow as it's always working! However, tight abdominals and core (which the hip flexors are part of) can restrict movement of the diaphragm. Glad to hear that hip stretches have helped and it's definitely a relationship to explore!

      I struggle with both my hips and jaw, and had no clue how interconnected they were in relation to one another until today! I’m so thankful for this video, and completely relate to your situation! I just started doing some concentrated stretches on my hip flexors, and hope it starts reaping benefits in my singing! Thank you for sharing your experience! It makes me feel like I’m not alone too.

      Definitely not the only one lol it’s all on the psoas muscles & everything else around the hips (obliques, glutes, etc)
      Crazy enough aside from it also having affected my jaw but also shoulder imbalance. The body is completely systematic so one imbalance will cause another elsewhere. Bc of so much tightness, i also struggled with breathing deep from diaphragm. But one thing for sure to know is where the problem stems from. Stretching, breathing techniques, electrical therapy devices & other methods have helped wonders

    I seriously want to cry... I'm 52 and you've just explained why I've been in so much pain and discomfort my whole adult life. I gave birth to my son a few weeks after I turned 18. It was a really difficult labour and he was a BIG baby. Six months after he was born I was walking around slightly leaning to the side, with him on my hip, when all of a sudden my jaw locked up. Anything wider than a straw wouldn't fit between my teeth. A few hours later it released by itself but it was never the same. I've never been able to open it anymore than two a half finger widths. Since that time.. slowly and surely over the years, my whole skelatal structure has pretty much fallen apart. It's curved, it's bent, I can't stand straight. My jaw is totally out of allignment and always hurting. With the birth of my subsequent child, and then my grandchildren.. I noticed the overall problem would suddenly get worse from constantly leaning to the side and carrying them on my hip. I've now reached the point of being in so much pain all the time, I can barely think straight. But at least now I can start fixing the problem and hopefully get my life back. THANK YOU.!!!! xx

    I was just sitting in the lotus position, doing some hip and sciatic stretches, turn on TH-cam to listen to some binaural beats and then WHABAM! I sit right into the pain in my hip and then all of a sudden my jaw started feeling - I don’t know how to explain it but it felt uncomfortable and the muscles started twitching. And then I look down at my phone and this video is listed as “Suggested” to watch.
    I didn’t search for anything about hips or jaw or pain or anything. It just popped up - and I needed it. Thanks for this. Also still totally weirded out that this video popped up without me even searching for anything related to it… yet here I am. Thank you either way.

    I love this combo of modalities. I’m a singer and was not aware there was a connection between the jaw and hips. I’ve been doing fascia release exercises from The Human Garage on YT for a few weeks and have had some major relief from discomfort in my body. Also, Dr. Gabor Mate’s vids talk about childhood trauma being held in the fascia. I highly recommend watching both along with your videos.

      Lying down. Bend your knee. And start pressing muscle just about top your pubic bone from right to left (area of appendix, bladderand rectum) . Press with 4 fingers parallel to pubic bone. When u feel a pressure pain on certain area, do deeper press and move a veey little circular on that pain to release the muscle tension

      @@VoxYoga The night jaw clenching and sciatica that started in 1989 has worsened now. I've broken every molar and premolar, getting constant crowns and re-crowns for the years since.
      My hips, especially right side, lock up, deeply ache and burn, make me walk like I'm 100 years old. I've also got deep burning in anogenital area, a separate issue, I thought. Was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1991, small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy last year. Good grief.
      Had never heard of jaw, hip, fascia connection. Have seen many doctors/specialists, physical therapists, acupuncturists. Craniosacral therapy seemed to help but only a day or so after session.
      Am seeing a fascia specialist soon.

    Very interesting. I discovered connection between coccyx and voice when singing tenor in choir. The more the tension went in my hips and coccyx, the more easily I could reach high notes, albeit only falsetto. In fact I discovered that whereas normally I would struggle to reach top A, but when my coccyx dropped significantly I was able to reach the C above, and on one occasion the Eb above. I have always had a lisp and I have always had a theory that it is related to tension in the coccyx and shoulders. Somehow it causes my tongue to push forward and be too large for the mouth, hence a lisp. About 30 years ago I was studying Alexander Technique and practicing meditation and I got further than I have ever got with it and reached a state that I can only describe as Nirvana. More recently I discovered an Alexander Teacher online and he actually used the expression 'Nirvana in the Neck'. which is a good description of my experience. I also experienced that we actually have two responses to gravity, like the trees. Our upper half actually tries to pull us upward away from earth, whereas our lower half, below the waist pulls us down towards the earth, just like a tree. Our waist represents the section of the tree where it meets the soil. It is a fascinating subject and when I tried explaining it to my cousin a few years she said I had found my vocation. In the end I think it is all about lengthening the spine, which is subject of yoga and as the spine lengthens breathing is improved (pranayama) . I have also discovered the releasing the coccyx is also often the cure for lower back pain.

    Omgosh!!!! I discovered this jaw hip connection by accident. I was under personal stress for some time and my jaw was bothering me for a couple months. I finally decided I would have to go to the DDS for a night guard. On the same day I decided it was time to seek dental help, I also realized my hips were hurting (and I do yoga/stretch everyday at least for 10 min) as an equestrian it is a must to have limber pelvis. I dug in to the hips with intention AM and PM and the next AM. Woke up and hips were feeling much better. On my long drive home from the barn I suddenly realized that my jaw was relaxed and not bothering me! I was astonished but did not make the connection yet. Later while pondering the fact that both areas were feeling better, I wondered if there might be a connection and VOILA!! I have found much info to support the jaw hip connection!! How fascinating! I just came across this video, and I'm glad that I did! As a former yoga teacher and dressage rider, I have learned a lot about anatomy and how it affects us. However, I also have generalized anxiety disorder. What a combo! I carry a lot of tension in my jaw and shoulders. Every day, I do yoga poses that, in particular, help my tight hips, psoas, neck, and shoulders. It was so interesting to hear your explanation of that connection! Breathing is so important, not only to be calm and focused but also to project your voice. Plus the pelvic floor part was quite a revelation. You now have a new subscriber! 🙂

I have had bad pain in the left side of my jaw/neck for several years now (I have TMJ) and that side of my pelvis/hips/lower back are always SO tight. So much tighter than the right side. Super interesting.
    As a violinist during music college I had an Alexander Technique teacher who constantly pointed out the effects inner tension has on areas such as the neck/jaws/tongue and the pelvis, as well as the knees and feet/ankles.
    For a long time I had to learn to relax the pelvis, the neck, etc. in order to relax the whole body.
    The sensation of freedom and the sound I then got out of my instrument were immense; I’ve never since been able to repeat this in quite the same way, without his guidance… a real eye opener.

    I discovered this and other connections during my training in the Ehrenfried Method, also called "gymnastique holistique" in France. Lily Ehrenfried was trained by Elsa Gindler/Berlin about 100 years ago. We also work with the different diapragms in the body. Very much appreciated your excellent presentation, and the "chattering teeth" tests.

      @@VoxYoga There are a few videos here on TH-cam, if you search "gymnastique holistique". In French only, but you'll get the idea. Lily Ehrenfried's work is spread mostly in France, Quebec and Brazil. Other students of Elsa Gindler went to USA, like Charlotte Selver who taught her version of the work as "Sensory Awareness". Carola Spears went to NY, where she taught breath work, I think. Here in Berlin, we still have several 2nd Generation teachers, now in their 80s. Researching the history of body-work is so fascinating!

    I came across Mike Mew on his Orthotropics channel when I was looking for ways to improve my singing. He has some interesting exercises and ideas for getting things back into alignment. He talks a lot about the position of the tongue, chin and neck. I have found his videos quite helpful and they go along with what was presented in this video.

    • @TheEmaile
      @TheEmaile 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I found mewing early this year and tried to get enough info to work on it on my own to widen my palate and stop my sleep apnea. That actually improved, but after a few months, I began to have all sorts of issues… knee pain , shoulder pain, even foot pain where I had never had anything wrong before. Every time I exercised it seems I was hurting myself. Recently started wondering if this has all come from my facial posture. Especially since the mewing work has produced even more neck tension than I already had.

    • @SHTMusik
      @SHTMusik 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      it definitely sounds like there is something out of alignment somewhere. I remember going to a doctor for back pain and his telling me that the major tension was in my neck not my lower back where I felt the most pain. When doing Mewing-type exercises I have a mantra of hip and shoulders, neck and tongue (kinda like the kids song Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes) that I repeat as I´m exercising and try to relax these four key areas. I have had good results but everybody is unique and if the exercises are causing more tension and problems it sounds like they are disturbing the delicate balance between your hips, back, shoulders and neck. One common problem is trying too hard. I am not an expert but for me proper breathing while doing this kind of exercise is really important as well as trying to keep the area from the hips to the neck fluid, like a wave, and not locking up in any spot. Good luck. @@TheEmaile

      That’s interesting! Hip shoulders, neck and tongue! I’ll try that since I certainly haven’t been cognizant of my posture or breathing while doing it. Thanks for sharing those insights and glad to hear that you had good results from your efforts! @@SHTMusik

    • @greenfrog6449

      @@TheEmaile possibly when mewing the temptation is to clench, making sure you have the teeth in contact. Do you follow Dr Steven Lin? He did a really good post the other day, saying that the important thing is the tongue and the teeth don't really need to be in contact. But the tongue suction is the Holy Grail of mewing. Or try Holographic Breathing - on the in breath you let the jaw drop very slightly, but the tongue remains up and the lips closed.
