So what did you end up finding as a cause for the excessive smoking?

Anything further on this engine? I am almost finished putting one out of a 140 in another 140. The first block had a connecting rod go thru this side of the block. The new engine seems to run great with no smoke but I am very interested in getting a motor perfect for this restoration.

Would you use a wire wheel to clean around valves?

Not a steel one, maybe if it’s brass.
