I’m replacing the head gasket on this very engine right now. This video has been a huge help to me. Fortunately, I didn’t run into the valve guide issue that you did, so it’s been a pretty straightforward job so far. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Some of us depend on guys like you to guide us through repairs that we’ve never done before.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, it is encouraging to hear that it is helping people out. Learning how to revive what we already have is a skill I believe is becoming increasingly valuable.
@@SolunaGarage Forgot to mention...the bolts under the flywheel were loose like you said they might be. If not for the video I wouldn’t have known to check that.
On the spring tool, I cut a very deep hollow socket in half and brassed it to lips which made it work great on these heads because we fix them nearly every day or week
What I’ve done lots of times is drive it and stick rod thru exhaust port and just touch guide, just a tad of touch will keep it from moving up Done it about 35 times now and no complaints or issues
This is such an awesome channel. I come here through your 1882 build. I have John Deere myself but this is a nice view into the 2000’s cubs. I have a new respect for them(not the courage though.)
Thanks, that means a lot to hear that. The 2000 Series are kinda unappreciated in my opinion. The Courage was never offered in the 2000 Series They stuck with the Onan Elite, Kohler Command, and Briggs Vanguard engines, all of which I'm sure you know are sound. The Kohler Courage single cylinder is probably their worst engine at the time it was offered.
@@SolunaGarage oh I have personally seen the courage’s go. I put an m18 in my John Deere 317 out of a low hour 1811 that had bent frame. and I was looking up rebuild videos. It has 120psi on the cylinders but burns a lot of oil. In the John Deere world the kohler twins and even magnums are frowned apon because of the onans reputation. All that said, I found a 2166 with 800 hours im looking at. Seriously want it. I like the single commands. I had one on my stx38 I had.
I think the Command singles are awesome. Nice torquey engines that sip fuel and are small and easy to work on. I haven't owned an Onan twin, but I would certainly like to some day. With the exception of the parts being more expensive, they are awesome engines.
@@SolunaGarage I have an onan cck 16hp twin on my old miller welder I’m rebuilding and it’s so simple compared to the kohler twins, but I’m excited to see more from your channel, definitely supscribed. Your content is underrated for sure.
Ive got the same series mower. It hasnt run in a year, I can spin the motor using the bolt on the underside. It will spin freely then gets to a certian point and stops. I can reverse the rotation and it does the same thing. When starting it will turn over a little and stops. Was hoping its in the head, but how likely would valves just stop movement? Any suggestions? Thanks! Great videos btw!
Easiest thing to do is to pull the valve cover and inspect the valve train to see if the bind is in the valves or if it is deeper than that. Good luck and thank you!
What works good is to weld a square key stock on top of the tool and grind out the middle so it can compress more, I did this years ago and never had a problem with it Just easier to use 😊on daily basis
Do you remember what torx socket size was used to remove the muffler bolts from the head? I have to remove mine and need to buy one. I would like to know what size I need to buy.
Use a peace of cardboard and stick bolts in it as other things like push rods and valves I taught trade school and it seems to help them. Can even label them to Just saying
Would a slightly dropped exhaust valve guide cause the muffler to glow a cherry red? The engine is running good (for a kholer courage) but it must be lean. I adjusted the valves to spec, flywheel key is in tact, fuel system clean, gaskets in tact...thanks!
Taryl fixes all has a video on an engine with a moved valve guide. His fix was to drill and tap a hole thru side of engine. Set screw pushes against valve guide and prevents it from moving. Might be an option here to prevent the guide from moving again. Where to drill the holes is the question😅.
@@SolunaGarageyou can drill and tap a small hole at about 45 degrees in same location where you punched in those divots. Might need to set head on a vise and use a drill press. Also, it might hold the guide even better if the hole extends past the head and a bit into the valve guide. That way set screw does its job. Someone out there might wanna give a try.😅 I would if this problems was recurrent.

had a valve cover bolt break off on my sv590. of course the shroud itself snaps as im extracting. cant wait to pull the head.....

Cool man! Gotta keep this old iron alive! Thanks for taking the time to stop in.

I do not, I would say a T30, but I'm not certain. I'll see if I have any extra laying around that I can confirm for you.
@@SolunaGarage Fabulous!
@donaldlemoine3032 the old bolts I have here from the repair are T45.
And you sir
Got a set at hf cheap

How did the Hondabond work as your Valve Cover gasket?
It worked really well.
what tool of measurement did you use when setting value seat height?
I believe I just used a dial caliper with the depth gauge end.

I do the same, just not on every engine.

I wouldn't think so. As long as the valve still closes, it shouldn't affect the mixture.
It’s easy to hyd press it back also and not hammer the guide
Just the way I do it
Old school thing
To stop mice and rats from eating spark plug wire use windows screen and fine wire. Same with electric wires
Would have been so much better if the guides were screwed in
Gotta love that "interference" fit.
