I replaced the adjuster screw with an allen cap screw so I can use a 90 degree allen wrench. I also replaced the points & cover mounting screws with a cap screw. Made my life much easier!!
I've been running golf course shops for over 40 years. Been watching your videos and still learn a lot of a lot of great stuff. I guess I've just been lucky cause I've changed hundreds of Kohler K series point sets and never had a timing issue just setting @ .020 and they always sounded and ran fine. But, that being said, I've never put a light on it to see if it was dead on... Great videos, keep em coming...
my kroler has got problems... let me tell you about Jackie and her garden. Jackie was my friend and my first customer. i cut her grass with my simplicity mower. She had a dead tree in her yard, and after she passed, not 1 month it fell. I cut it up. last fall i mowed her grass for the last time, and as i pulled the rider up to the trailer. it died at the end of the trailer ramp. it did its job. it was good. thank you all for helping me. and us.
Thanks for the information, I fixed my first lawn tractor on Thursday Craftman with a Briggs V twin engine. The carburetor needed servicing it was parked up for a long time. There isn't much of these in Trinidad it's very expensive. Keep up the good work
I bought a Cub Cadet with a 12 horsepower Kohler that had been sitting for like 10 years and I found a different coil from a car a Delco coil that doesn't have a condenser and I've been trying to start it and it fires, but is it going to do any harm to just see if the motors any good and run it a little bit without the condenser if I can get it going? Thanks I also can't get it to start. I can get it to pop and Fire but it isn't getting enough gas in the carburetor .I replaced the carburetor and it doesn't want to start. It don't have enough gas to start. and I have to keep it choked just to get it to fire so I'm wondering what could be wrong with the carburetor or if it's something in the valves so I don't know if you have any suggestions but I would like to hear them if you do. thank you
awesome video I have told people you could time these motors with a light before and they did not believe me really wish you guys would do a video on the battery-less Timing Systems for the K series
What up Buddy, I got a Cub Cadet 1050 with a KOHLER 25 SV730 V-TWIN at low idle its runs great soon as I put on high speed it starts to pop in and out like a cylinder is firing in and out. could this be coil pack, do you recommend replacing parts with KOHLER OEM parts or do aftermarket parts work fine?
I have an old Kroller 10 hp with tiny spark so tiny it wont jump the plug gap I set the points with a matchbook cover was running last year with a cheapo eBay condenser. But no work this year. Is tiny spark a bad condenser or too much point gap?
Hi I have a kohler commard pro it a 2012 has spark compression 150 on one side and 90 on the other the spark plugs are very wet like float is stuck so drained the bowl disconnected the gas line and just squirted it with gas to the intake and still nothing any not a pop or nothing any suggestions 😀
KIRK Engines Inc. has a point saver kit that is essentially the same as electronic ignition. I've had one installed on my K321 for many years. It made a huge difference in power, starting, and reliability.
Taryl love the videos funny and very informative... I had a question about how you change the fuel pumps on the k series motors.... will this work on a c series 13hp kohler?
Tayrl,I used to have that SAME EXACT tractor, except mine was a GT-19 Kroler opposed twin-cylinder 19hp.(K-19 series. The only issue that I had with this tractor,is Ariens spins their P.T.O.'s way to fast,(3,600 R.P.M.)instead of 540 R.P.M.like on a John Deere 400 for example.I had to buy a brand new gear-box for it due to this.($200.00 for the gearbox on the 48"inch mower deck just to buy it back in about 1989...OUCH!)
I have the same exact riding tractor I cannot get mine to time right and was wondering if you may think somebody put it back together wrong when I have it at top dead center my timing mark is in about the 11:00 position on the flywheel shouldn't it be at least close to the timing work on the side of the block originally I thought the keyway had broke on the shaft and allowed the flywheel to spend tour the engine down to see that that was not the case I've never heard this tractor run I just got a good deal on it because it was not running figured it had to have something to do with points and it did not so my flywheel theory was next on the mark would not line up now that that's not the problem I'm kind of at a loss maybe the timing marks on the gears on the inside were not lined up properly maybe they tore the engine down and did not put it together right
if you want to confirm that TDC is not correct, take the head off, spin the flywheel to the T mark. check the piston is at the top of the bore and both valves are in their fully closed position. if so, your timing marks should be good.
You asked so......"Dead nuts 00" is a machinist term referring to "0" on the indicator, of the machining surface or your material or part is "0" in its entirety, length or circumference Great videos !
nice video taryl i have a 1965 kohler K91RT it doesn't have any spark, would the coil be bad or the condenser or both? and any suggestions to take the flywheel off that doesn't have any drilled holes for the use of a puller? it is not a battery ignition
Josh Kilen I wouldn't have any ideas for you then, I've only worked on the once that don't have the points and condenser. Just the ones with a coil only. It should be the same way for checking points and condenser. Just remember to disconnect the coil from the points and condenser so you don't send high voltage spikes through your meter.
Josh Kilen I'd say just check the gap, and if there still isn't a spark, check the points. (again, ohm meter and disconnect coil, the points could be dirty) and condenser might be shorted, I would remove the condenser for testing, but only for testing, a long term removal would wear the points very fast as a spark would jump across them.
great info ; replacing the mechanical fuel pump on k-series( kruller) with a pulse pump works great thanks for the info ;i enjoyed watching all your vids ;p.s. keep the toro wheelhorse you have in the yard
Always wondered what the L screw driver in Dad's tool box was for? Then someone brought in one of the Kroler Cast irons. Well some customers might take exception to Drilling their frame, hence the Right Angle Screw Driver. Lots of patience and a room full of 4 Letter words and WahLah. Get it out of here. The new school mechanic's would look at ya and say Points, condenser, timing light, ??? HUH LOL (Wonder Why Kohler never gave Dwell angle specs.) Better than standing on your head with a timing light. Good Video as Always Guys. " And Now You KNOW "
+Hector Avila Mower racers use a peerless 700-070a or a Pro Gear T7510 they're about $200.00 A cheaper route is to switch the pulleys on a mower. small pulley on the trans larger pulley on the engine.
Thank you very much Mr. Dactil. I found your video very informative and plan to subscribe. I am not a big fan of the humor but I feel there is enough meat on the bone to make it worth my time. HaHaHa had you going I bet. Big,big fan of a good laugh, just ask Steve Rob. Thanks.
just to clarify, according to my 140 service manual (k321) static timing is still set using the "s" mark, not the breaker gap. "points should just begin to break as the 'S' mark appears in the center of the timing hole." setting gap never works for me as it just changes timing. the gap screw is the timing screw. it makes no sense. adjust timing and ur maximum gap is what ur maximum gap is.
So pretty much if you're battery is low or bad the engine won't run. I've got a JD GT242 with a Kawasaki FC420V that will not start unless I jump start it. Otherwise it just backfires. I wonder if you could do a video on one of them. It's a 90s model and has electronic ignition.
Great information Taryl, exactly what I needed to know. But Taryl, I have to say, it is a KOHLER engine, not a KROLER, just sayin' buddy. A Kroler (Cruller) is what you buy at Tim Hortons to go with your coffee! Boogie on and keep those videos coming.
what if my testing light dosnt light up when I touch it from the battery to the coil? I've replaced the coil, condenser, points already. and I'm still having problems with no spark.
The timing light and it not showing up dealt with the recording camera's frames per second settings. Once the speed min creased it was no longer in sync with your camera and it could show the light...
Ditch the flat head screws on the points cover and replace them with Allen head machine screws. Put a dab of grease on the Allen wrench to hold the screw when installing. You can thank me later.
I prefer to run my K341 at 18/1000 .. if you go beyond 20/1000s you are really tuning it for very high RPM and I am never needing my K341 to rev beyond 2800rp[m. This engine is a beast, way more HPs than you will ever need in a garden tractor even at 2400rpm.
you forgot to mention to seal up the points cover with a non corrosive sealer or you will be doing the whole job again in a few months ; plus it helps to replace the points plunger so that oil does not leak past plunger shorting out your points
CV - Command verticle. Any Briggs single 15HP or higher. Just have to make sure you have the same charging system. If the krohler has a voltage reg. You should find a Briggs with a regulator. Check out me engine swap video. th-cam.com/video/litTZViYbkI/w-d-xo.html
How can you hypnotize somebody when they don't have a brain? I've been wanting to do this with the Krohler in my old John Deere. Thanks for the info. I noticed the points you had said Kohler on them. Did you get them direct from Kohler and are they of good quality like the old originals? It's hard to find decent quality points nowadays.
I replaced the adjuster screw with an allen cap screw so I can use a 90 degree allen wrench. I also replaced the points & cover mounting screws with a cap screw. Made my life much easier!!

Those Kohler K-Series Engines are awesome. Can't kill 'em
I set a goal to watch EVERY Taryl video!!
That's great, plenty to watch if you haven't seen them all up to this point already!
Me too
Taryl you boys take mechanics to a different funny funny dimension .............I thank you kindly Sirs, I love this

Had a good laugh and learned something new. Plus Mr. Test-light always cracks me up. Thanks!
Need help, I'm doing a total rebuild on an xt675 Kohler. There is a timing mark on the cam but not the crank. Any help would be appreciated.
Does it hurt anything to use a full size battery in a small garden tractor instead of the lawn mower size battery ?

Ariens are good built tractors i have a 1997 model grand Sierra 2200 had it couple months really like it
Is there a way to change these motors to electronic ignition. Probably not just wondering. Good video guys

Can you with the style of points use a dwell meter and adjust both
hey got a question what motor in briggs would be the same as a kohler 15.5 engine crankshaft and all the kohler number is cv15s-ps41588
I have a ts 350 conrete saw. I had to switch coil. I convert ignition to points can you give me some tips on setting timming on these saws cheers

dead nuts . i use that term alot. nice job as usual. taryl

the coil is a magneto type no battery needed

Josh Kilen Also, double check your gab between magneto and flywheel magnets.

it does have points and condenser, it is a 1965 K91RT

Do you like them Kirk engine inc trandenser ll
How abouts do you have that timing light hooked up?
I got a bracket and cover from Zach Kerber so i can use GM points then you can adjust them with a allen key

Ha awesome vid buddy.👍👍
What's your suggestion on turning a K-Series Kohler engine into electronic ignition
Your a good man I trust your judgement.. nice work 😋

have got the testing light to light up now. but still no spark.
Great information, yet again. I take it the tractor has the inspection , hole for setting the timing.
+Peter Froud Yes thats put there by Krohler
I see reminds me a little of a old Villiers i have the timing goes out if the cylinder jams ..
but i enjoy watching someone who knows what they are doing

joseph tuleya tell em taryl
@@TarylFixesAll you are right if you store your tractor in a dry garage.
it's a good idea to have the points outside of the flywheel but I know from experience they are hard to deal with on a lot of lawn tractors.
thanks for this ...
GREAT VIDEO ! ALSO I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WERE JR. GOT THAT RED AND WHITE HAT !
We get a lot of our props from resale, Good will ECT, ECT,
when's your next video coming out, ???looking forward to all of them,

Now can I still 5ime it even if my engine doesnt run. I'm trying to get it to run and I need to time it
I got a Scrub Quiet-time $12.50's...It's got one of them Mary Kay series iron lungers in it....So thanks.
Next video, what types of oil to use in certain engines at different seasons or different parts of the country.
oh yes and i would still like to get a t-shirt ;for when i;m out mowing
love the laugh track

How can I get a ""Taryl Fixes All" "T-Shirt"?
Great video, but why would you want to get rid of slippers , he is solid country gold!!
Isavetractors.com has a video of timing this engine using a multimeter connected to the points.Seems simpler.
Awesome.
But I'm not sure if you guys are film makers first or mechanics.
You set the bar very high.
Gary Cathro thank you! We try to give you the best of both worlds...
Good!!! Like
It just seems like there should be a jam nut on the valves set nuts.. but there isn't ..
What happens if points don't open
no sparkie, no workie
Taryl, your video title spelled Krohler wrong. Hehe
Hollywood actors ain't got sheit on these guys. Lol
Thank you I have a 14 & 16 k John Deere

try hi
Didn't mention how to connect timing light for those newbies who dont know!
How old is Teryl
If Taryl could split that plow lengthwize and heve upper an lower halfs open an close.
he could call it the grabber
This video is: dead nuts on !!!!
Man slippers looks rough lol
I think Jr should give the timing light a 2nd go on Slippers, but send him to another Country.
He would suit the outback in Australia,,,, fit RIGHT IN.
Now I got that stupid Three's Company song stuck in my head
I bought a test light from China. I don't understand a word it says....
Not sure how that posted 9 times........
i love slippers
Why didnt we listen when they said, Dont Take the Purple Pills.
Unlike another Commenter, I watch For the Humor. Go Slippers, I mean Stay Slippers.
Thanks Charles! We can't please everyone! Glad you enjoy what we do.
Who's the guy that looks like Taryl? Is that his twin brother?
I think you're talking about Taryl Jr his son
A kroller is a german pastry.
you should re-view your own older vids Taryl.
You had a better accent, and a far more wierd look, that i liked more.
