Matti Haapoja made a great video on this. Unless you are filming for large screens, although there is software now that upscales 1080 to "4K" both in post and on some TV's integrated software. I like to shoot in 1080 simply because of the smaller file sizes. Great video though.
Especially 4K with insane rolling shutter is just useless. I had an A6400 and was upset about the handheld footage. But the A6400 is very cool in terms of software and price. Much cheaper than a full frame and has excellent autofocus.
I appreciate that! The only problem is that I’ve found not all 1080 is created equal. Some 1080 is passable while others isn’t super great. It’s an interesting topic for sure
Upscaling 1080 to 4K doesn't look as good as using 4K footage on a 1080 timeline. You have the ability to zoom in up to 200% before you start to see any artifacting, why you purposely limit yourself
4k gives you the ability to zoom and change frame multiple times in a video without loosing quality like peter maceny and other creators do even slightly to retein attention of audience its small but it been proven to work specially for youngster with shor tatention

I have the Sony a7II, it was and still is my first camera body camera without a normal point and shoot, I paid $999 for mine which came with the Kit lens back in 2018. I use it just for photography, I have a stand alone camcorder for 4k footage. I only have one other lens other than the Kit lens it came with, which still does better than a standard point and shoot, though I have since gotten a FE 1.8 / 20G lens.
I bought a A7II as a birthday gift to myself. Absolutely love it! It's nearly the perfect camera for my needs. Hardly shoot video. Mostly pictures. Just need to buy nice lenses for it and I'll be really set! It was the cheapest full frame I could afford at the time. I wanted a full frame to adapt some of my vintage lenses from my old Minolta cameras to it. And I bought a super nice adaptor for it and it works amazing with the peaking! I didn't want a crop sensor for this feature alone. And the camera play memories apps, as cheeky as they are, are great features to have! Makes certain things easier to do in camera such as double exposure and time lapse. Overall, this camera will last me a very long time until I improve my skills and feel I deserve a camera upgrade.
I came here because I would like to upgrade from my a6000. I still love it, and its enough for what I use it for, we just need two cameras in our household from now on ;). I have some glass for it and batteries so my upgrade path should be the 6400. But I wanted some confirmation. I need to tell you.. The pixel count is the same... :D On Sony-s site they lists 24.2 Mpx for the a6400 and 24.3 for the a7ii. That sould not make that much of a difference. The A7Rii is the highres one. The a 6400 is a shrink down a7ii with a smaller sensor and battery. Maybe i'm at fault here, but it looks like a better deal from every angle. Photo and videography too. (Also you can use full frame lenses no prob with an aps-c sensor but not the other way without cropping in, so the aps-c is easyer too, because you can use alllll of the e-mount lenses not just the full frame ones, witch are more expensive. I can buy an A7II in excellent condition with a shuttercount of 7200. My first ever camera. Will mainly use it for landscape, northern lights, Sky shots. Is the slow AF a problem? Battery life is bad, I'll buy some spare batteries 👍🏻
You're right. Good video. You forgot to mention the A6400 425 focus points compared with the A7II 117 focus points. A6400 focuses so much faster and has eye-focus tracking where as the a7II is fixed. So I was all set to buy the A6400. Until I started to chose lenses to go with it. I liked the Sigma 28 - 70mm F2.8 which was a full frame lens. The nearest APS-C lens was the Carl Zeiss that was only F4. A very good lens but not (surprisingly) as good a the Sigma. I could have fitted the Sigma to the A6400 but lost some of the F stops and the wider angles. Plus there's no IBIS on the A6400 and the Sigma had no ISS. With the photos I take I would find IBIS useful. The video quality is irrelevant to me. I don't use my camera for video. I would say that the 6400 is the better camera for video but the A7II is the camera suited for me.
I believe you don't lose F-stops when you put a full frame lens on an APS-c sensor. You only lose some FoV, since the light spills over outside the area of the sensor. In summary. you can apply the crop factor, but you should not apply the aperture factor, that's only for native APS-C lenses to get a "full-frame" equivalent, but if the lens is already full frame, you don't have to do it!
@@Pwasercan Thanks for your reply. I'm very tempting to put it to the test. A camera like the A6400 could give me a bit more 'reach' with the same Sigma lens. I'm also making too much fuss about IBIS as the cameras I started out with were 35mm cameras from the 1980's. No image stabilization, no auto-focus, fixed film speeds...
I don't know why so many people believe you can't use full frame lenses with APS-C bodies. You can use them just fine and they work great. You just need to multiply the focal length and the f-stop by the crop factor of your camera (in this case 1.5). And you do that to aps-c lenses too, a 24mm lens for aps-c cameras is still a 36mm actually, it just doesn't project the bigger image area of a full frame on the sensor. So yeah, you could actually say aps-c bodies have even more lens options that full frames because they have the full frame lenses and crop lenses combined haha. I have 5 lenses and all of them are full frame ones and I have an aps-c camera
@@telecomandano, you don't understand. my point was that you don't have to multiply the f-stop by 1.5 if your lens is full frame!!! That's just for aps-c lenses to get an equivalent ona full frme camera, not vice-versa!
That is sad, buying first new camera is very confusing, when I dig into it, I say hey I have new smartphone already, why keeping my mind busy compering this with that. you always feel that when buying one camera, you will lose something or feature. There is no complete camera with reasonable price . It is gonna cost you arm and a leg for getting full satisfaction .
Having a Full Frame camera DOES NOT mean having more resolution 😐. It's quite the opposite actually. Imagine you're looking at a 50" TV playing a 4k video and then looking at a 100" TV playing the same 4k video. On which one will you have a smoother, cleaner image? Of course on the 32", because the pixels will be much smaller and knitted together. What you DO have with a Full Frame camera is a sensor capable of obtaining more information in the whole spectrum of light, so you'll have a Higher Dynamic Range (HDR) , and that's because the photodiodes on a Full Frame sensor will be much bigger than the ones on an APS-C. Don't spread wrong info please 😊
Eh, I'd argue the a6400 even for photos is better. (depending on what you shoot) The a6400 is so much faster and has so many more AF points. I think those 2 things alone make up for the smaller sensor. Unless your shooting for billboards or large prints the a6400 wins in both photo and video. BUT! Great video sir!
I appreciate it! I’d also argue that with the amount of lens options you get with the a7ii and the full frame sensor, I generally prefer that. But to each their own!
how about the autofocus between the 2? I'm coming from the a6000 and honestly that and the overheating while recording are my biggest complaints. how does the a6400 handle longer video recording? have you tried the a6500 or a6600?
I can in Denmark buy both at same price but the 6400 has a 16-50 mm while the a7 ii has a 26-70 mm. Which means I should go out and use 300 dollars to get a lens. Should I still take the 6400?
Great video my friend. Hope who read this can help me with which cam to choose. I've been taking photos for like 15 years (owned plenty of cameras such as: Nikon F35, Nikon d5000, Fujifilm X100, Nikon D90, Canon SL3, Canon 6D), but been out of business for like 5 years (lol), now I have the chance to get a new camera, with my budget I can get the CANON RP (+ kit lense), or the SONY A7 II (kit lense + 50 mm 1.8), both brand new, but I have never EVER used a Sony system before. I did read some reviews comparing both cameras, but I don't see too many differences between then. If you have to choose, which one would you buy it? Canon RP or A7 II? I don't care about video, I am into fashion shot, streetphotography. Thanks!
I started with Canon cameras and honestly the switch was pretty seamless. The interfaces are a bit different but for someone like you who knows settings and is familiar with camera language, you should pick it right up. I really enjoyed the A7ii. And the 50mm takes some amazing photos. I have a review on that lens and all of the photos from that were shot on the A7ii, it might helped you make a better informed decision!
. I shoot with a phone and mine is 4K down to 1080P, not bad at all. Infact , people who watch my videos say it looks good, yes it's not UHD, but come on, it's not like 1080P is a, terable resolution. Except for some phones and $100 cameras from unknown brands, 1080P there looks 720P lol
I'm so interested in the video part of a camera that if the cameras came without a video option, I wouldn't even notice.:))))) I chose the A 7II, for a bigger sensor I'm not interested in the rest.
Only the A7ii has in body image stabilization. It’s an unfortunate toss up. The a6400 has 4k where the A7ii only shoots 1080. I would recommend looking into stabilization in post production. Premiere, Final Cut and Davinci all have great built in stabilization effects
I have 2 options, Buying 7iii with an ordinary lens or Buying a6400 with a excelent lens without oss. and im afraid that option 2 is good enough for Starting videography? A6400 doesnt have Ibis... So what's youe recomendation?
If they removed the video record button, I wouldn't even notice. For photography full frame all the way. Ergonomics on the 6000 series is about the worst out there. The A7 II feels just as familiar as my A7R III only lighter and a little more compact. I'm just sayin...
Never seen so much difference between A7ii/full frame and apsc camera in terms of image quality. Maybe some small details that normally you wouldn't notice
If you want to do mainly video, I would say the a6400 but mainly photos then I would go with the A7ii. Hard to say exactly which one would be better for you, depends if you want full frame or APS-C
Im new to photography, been looking mainly for these 2 cameras. Found A7 Mk ii + Sony Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA for 750$ with shuttercount just over 1000. Is it a good deal?
The A6400 and the 18-135 is an awesome I have that exact combo and using for vlogging, professional and home videos. The 4k really looks good doesn’t matter about the crop sensor.i got mine from a pen shop and haven’t put it down since. I first bought the A7ii for photography got this later for video and find it lighter so use it as my everyday carry.
@zach McGee, why do you say that the A7II has a bigger pixel count if it also has 24MP like the A6400? Crop sensors cameras can be easily used in tight spaces if you just choose wide angle lenses! I'm a professional photographer since 2016 using only crop sensor cameras (A6000/6300/6400) with ultra wide angle lenses (Sony 10-18 and Tamron 10-24) for interior design and real estate clients, not even once has one of them commented about the gear I use, only the quality of the pictures I deliver! I understand that shallow depth of field is very pleasing with full frame cameras but in real life it can be a bit of a problem if you're only starting with photography (the need to use larger F/ stops to have more of the image in focus and having to push the ISO up or zoom out and losing the framing you'd like to use). Keep up the good work!
Thats when lenses come into place buddy, sounds to me like you have alot to learn. Youre talking about distortion, well since the full frame is going to get more space, a 28mm lense in a full frame is equivalent to idk a 35mm or plus on the crop sensor. But really sounds like you need a lot to learn, yes the crop sensors are good but in reality a real proffesional top dog will be shooting in full frame. Crop sensor is really more of a budget thing, specialy years ago when these full frame sonys were over 2 grand. I had to settle for the crop sensors which were way more affordable. There is a reason why a camera from 9 years ago is still on sale today and still competitive aganist something with wayyyyy more feautures yes. And in the end, a full frame sensor is going to capture more true pixels, you get more light to the sensor. I can go on. But the fact that you believe a crop is the same thing as a full frame tells me you got alot more to learn. Full frame will always be better than a crop sensor. Only reason why these two would be comparable is because its a 9 year old vs a 4 year old camera. A camera realeased 1 year after the a7 ii for example a7rii , shits all over the a6400 no questions asked.
@@MOTMSLT I don’t, the image quality is still great, the auto focus is a bit slower though by today’s standard, but it doesn’t bother me that much. As long as you don’t shoot 4k video, I think you will be fine, lens is way more important than body, so if you can find a good deal, go for it.
The a6400 will have better quality. I’m not exactly sure which one would be better for live-streaming as far as how easy it would be to setup. Sorry about that!
hi! i found pretty good offers for the a7ii (€750 with lens) but there’s also good opportunities for the a6400. i come from an old nikon d3000, and i’d like to shoot more events (like sport or concerts). what do you think would be the best for me?
I do product videos and i need 120fps . I like the benefits of a full frame but for video that means i would have to hire from time to time... I'm in pain cause I'm struggling to choose lol
I can't decide between the a6300 and the a7ii. I'll mainly need it for concert photography and regular personal stuff, so the low light capability and ibis of the a7ii is leaning me towards that. how's the autofocus and other performance of it for scenarios like that?
Autofocus is great, and the camera would preform well in low light for photography. But I would recommend running it through Lightroom’s De noise program to get rid of any unwanted noise because this camera will have unwanted noise in photos. Anywhere above ISO 600, you will see noise that you otherwise wouldn’t want
unique option the a7ii. 1. IBIS for low light non plus ultra...2.bigger sensor (a7ii) lower noise....3.much more 1.8. and 1.4 objektives for full frame
A7rii has the second gen Exmoor sensor with better low light sensitivity and continuous eye focus. That's usually the best cheap ff option for low light photography professionally. The a7|| likes to hunt a little too much in low light (althogu for 600usd mine was still the steal of the year)
@@Zacharytmwhich camera are you talking about here? If its the a6400, thats the reason why a full frame will shit on a crop sensor in terms of low light
Hey, I have an a7iv but I need a second body as I work as a professional photographer and I'm scared the shutter will crap out on my one day. Can U use E mount lens with the A7ii? Do you think it's a good alternate as a back up body? I do portrait work.
Personally I think the A7ii would be better for long exposure and night photography. Your lens will also be super important when photographing planets, stars, etc…
Can somebody please point me in the right direction, i've been 6 years out of the game. I'm thinking of getting a sony a7ii BUT, it's damn near 10 year old piece of hardware. I'm looking for cinematography capabilities but also stills. I'm not talking 4k @250 fps or something. Just something that performs well on both worlds. Preferebly within a budget of 1000 euros.
@@robholguin9091 I know it has many benefits, only one thing and that it’s APS-C tho, I prefer the full frame but I’m so stuck on its build year… I can score an A7ii for 900 but that thing is also from 2014..
Its all about the lens selection for still photography. If limited selection and quality is adequate then the A6400. If nearly unlimited lens selection of superb quality are preferred then the A7ii. I buy used Minolta lenses for a fraction the cost of new Sony lenses (Sony bought Minolta and imported their products to start their digital camera division). If you need a camera for vlogging/ video cam then the A6400 does a far better job with up to 13 continuous hours of filming vs 30 min in the A7ii with other bells and whistles for video.. When the used A6400 / lens cost drops further I will likely pick one up for dedicated video recording. When possible shoot in RAW format as that is the only format that allows unlimited image processing. Davinci Resolve free version should be tried for video processing. If a new video processor is needed, a mac pro late model 2013 with 3 gz , 8 core, 64 bit processor, 3 gb D500 video card x 2, and 1 tb HD can be picked up refurbished for +/_ $400. This will allow Davinci Resolve to process 1080p and 4K up to 60 fps but 4K processing is 4 x slower. Using D700 video cards with 8 gb of memory will be faster but also generate more heat. If you are pro this set up will be inadequate. If not pro this set up will get you going. This mac pro has an intel chip therefore can be formatted to either mac OS or Windows 10.. You may also partition the drive to run the mac or windows. Windows 11 and beyond are not possible due to lack of a security chip in the processor OCW.com can provide an update kit to expand the T2 to T3 utility ( look for T2 update kit).
If youre pretty much only gon a shoot video, is the 6400 best then? Or is there another camera potentially better. Going to travel a lot and want to take some really cinematic videos of the landscapes as well as some of the adventures (so perhaps in need of some stability)
Compairing FF to APSC is like compairison of MP3 to FLAC in music formats - not everyone need it, many didnt even hear the diference but if you do you will be blown away by all those small details and nuances. For video A6400 is better hands down, but that menu is seriously barely usable, unintuitive and just bad. Everytime Ive tried to film with A6400 I just ended up with my phone pus gimbal to do the job better, faster and more enjoyable than Sony.

100% agree, good take. Full frame lenses are such an advantage to be able to utilize.
Hey! Which of these two cameras would be better for taking photos in low-light conditions, including shots of the night sky?
That is sad, buying first new camera is very confusing, when I dig into it, I say hey I have new smartphone already, why keeping my mind busy compering this with that. you always feel that when buying one camera, you will lose something or feature. There is no complete camera with reasonable price . It is gonna cost you arm and a leg for getting full satisfaction .
I understand bro I’m going through the exact same thing and it’s been months lol cannot decide
Same here.@@seedosimba3642
Well as is remember the a7ii has sensor stabilizer and the a6400 doesnt
Eh, I'd argue the a6400 even for photos is better. (depending on what you shoot) The a6400 is so much faster and has so many more AF points. I think those 2 things alone make up for the smaller sensor. Unless your shooting for billboards or large prints the a6400 wins in both photo and video. BUT! Great video sir!
I appreciate it! I’d also argue that with the amount of lens options you get with the a7ii and the full frame sensor, I generally prefer that. But to each their own!
I just bought the a7ii for 450 on Facebook market with the sony 50mm f 1.8 prime lens.
how about the autofocus between the 2? I'm coming from the a6000 and honestly that and the overheating while recording are my biggest complaints. how does the a6400 handle longer video recording? have you tried the a6500 or a6600?
If someone is selling his/her/their A7II for $350, should I get it?
Sounds like a fair price. Be sure you know what condition it is in before you buy though
I can in Denmark buy both at same price but the 6400 has a 16-50 mm while the a7 ii has a 26-70 mm. Which means I should go out and use 300 dollars to get a lens. Should I still take the 6400?
Thanks for the honest opinion.
It'a Honest review loved it.
currently in germany A72 is on sale for around 750 euros with kitlens while a6400 is 900+ euros
I'm so interested in the video part of a camera that if the cameras came without a video option, I wouldn't even notice.:))))) I chose the A 7II, for a bigger sensor I'm not interested in the rest.
Simple answer. A6700 but a7c is 600$ off for Black Friday on Best Buy right now
thanks for riview bro
This was good information. Do either of them have better stability? I'm wanting to capture a lot of video content but want good steady videos.
Which would you say is best for sports photography/film ?
If you want to do mainly video, I would say the a6400 but mainly photos then I would go with the A7ii. Hard to say exactly which one would be better for you, depends if you want full frame or APS-C
Im new to photography, been looking mainly for these 2 cameras. Found A7 Mk ii + Sony Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA for 750$ with shuttercount just over 1000. Is it a good deal?
It is excelent deal
I am going to start vlogging in fitnes which i should buy a6400 or a7ii i am totally confused and is sony a6400 with 18-135 is good for vlogging ??
The A6400 and the 18-135 is an awesome I have that exact combo and using for vlogging, professional and home videos. The 4k really looks good doesn’t matter about the crop sensor.i got mine from a pen shop and haven’t put it down since. I first bought the A7ii for photography got this later for video and find it lighter so use it as my everyday carry.
I would go with a6400 in this case ^^^ This dude nailed it
im a wedding videographer that only handheld, which you guys recommend me to buy?
Thank you very much
The a6400 has no ibis and not as good as in low light conditions. I mainly shoot stills.
I just picked up a brand new a7 mark ii for $650, I don’t do videos, just need it for photography
It’s a great pickup for photography! I loved all the photos that the A7ii could do
Do you have social media that I can follow? I’m thinking about getting a mark II, I’d like to see the picture quality
Which one should I choose. I'm using the camera mainly for church live streaming. I want it to be sdi ready
The a6400 will have better quality. I’m not exactly sure which one would be better for live-streaming as far as how easy it would be to setup. Sorry about that!
Sony girl here my only thing is can’t you just use the new lenses on the old a7ii ? Problem solved
hi! i found pretty good offers for the a7ii (€750 with lens) but there’s also good opportunities for the a6400. i come from an old nikon d3000, and i’d like to shoot more events (like sport or concerts). what do you think would be the best for me?
What did you get?
Which one is better for dog photography? Portraits, moving dogs.. I cant decide between these two
A6400
Just buy both of them! for photography A7ii, for video A6400😁
(it'll be almost the cost of A7iii)
Hahaha true
So the a6400 is the best for videography?
I do product videos and i need 120fps . I like the benefits of a full frame but for video that means i would have to hire from time to time... I'm in pain cause I'm struggling to choose lol
Hi, I found a like-new a6400 camera body for $680. I already have a6000 with SEL18-200 and 18-50kit. Is this a good deal or wait and save?
If you’re planning on doing mostly video work I would say that is a good deal
Hello what should I buy between a7ii with 28 70 mm and a6400 with a similar lens? Same price
6400
I can't decide between the a6300 and the a7ii. I'll mainly need it for concert photography and regular personal stuff, so the low light capability and ibis of the a7ii is leaning me towards that. how's the autofocus and other performance of it for scenarios like that?
Go for Canon R10
Yess, backup camera for a professional is a must. Additionally this will give more confidence to yourself and your client
No one really mentions the lighting requirement differences needed for FF vs Crop.
What about sony A7R ii vs Sony A6400?
Seriously? lol come on bro the R II buries the 6400. Deep.
"a7ii has higher megapixel count than a6400..." Really? 24MP both.
Is A7m2 still good for to use in 2023
What will be the better option to photograph celestial object?
Personally I think the A7ii would be better for long exposure and night photography. Your lens will also be super important when photographing planets, stars, etc…
Canon r50 or Sonya6400 which is better
a6400
the 2 have the same MP size, 24mp
Its a person behind camera mate
Can somebody please point me in the right direction, i've been 6 years out of the game. I'm thinking of getting a sony a7ii BUT, it's damn near 10 year old piece of hardware.
I'm looking for cinematography capabilities but also stills. I'm not talking 4k @250 fps or something. Just something that performs well on both worlds. Preferebly within a budget of 1000 euros.
The a6400 is awesome and can shoot 4k 60fps and 1080 120fps which is nice!
Windows 11 and beyond are not possible due to lack of a security chip in the processor
OCW.com can provide an update kit to expand the T2 to T3 utility ( look for T2 update kit).
I just ordered an a7ii on mpb for $400
If youre pretty much only gon a shoot video, is the 6400 best then? Or is there another camera potentially better.
Going to travel a lot and want to take some really cinematic videos of the landscapes as well as some of the adventures (so perhaps in need of some stability)
Bullcrap...1080p is more than enough flr social..
Especially since 95% of the people watching them are on cellphones.
Best all time lens for a6400
The 16-55mm is a great choice for APS-C users. It gives a lot of versatility with such a wide focal range, and the f-stop goes to 2.8.
