I think Gopro is entering the same era as Apple. New products are no longer aimed at everyone, but only at those who have a camera old enough to feel the need to buy a new one.

Then I remember of a content creator that makes rockets and his requirements are HUGE in therm of camera, he wants a camera that film in 4k 120fps without overheating while being half dismantled to fit inside of a rocket where it will suffer absolutely crazy extreme forces and go up to mach 3, I don't remember which camera he ended up using but he had to modify it physically quite a lot

I think the iPhone example in the comments is very good. The changes have only been minimal for years, although the marketing traditionally presents them as bigger. There is hardly any reason to replace the devices every 1-2 years. The problem with GoPro is probably that they offer almost nothing else. Apple earns a lot of money with services and of course not only Apple. But GoPro has hardly anything to offer in these areas. In the long run, you probably can't make money with niche hardware alone.

It's only worth updating every like 5 years, unless you are a pro you don't need to swap yearly. Yearly release means when you are ready to change they have something competitive.

Also, I hope you (or anyone watching) isn't using a GoPro as their main "A" cam! It should just be suplementary B Roll footage.

I had the Hero 4 Black, then stopped using it after a few years, and finally replaced it with a Hero 12 a few months ago... But as you say, specs can only get so far. A little like my original Mavic Pro. The spec hasn't changed much since, so no need to get a new version for what I use a drone for (and as for drones getting quieter - who cares when they're 200-400ft above you!)

Agreed, they really aren't doing enough. Still using three Hero 7's, with Reelsteady and the Karma gimbal still don't really see the need to upgrade. There isn't a significant difference in quailty and if I want something that looks amazing I'd just pick up my DSLR. The low light of the Action 5 is VERY appealing though so I might get round to upgrading if GoPro actually increase the sensor beyond the size of my little finger nail. GoPro really don't seem to understand that the segment of action cameras has grown beyond filming only 'action', people really like the idea of a very compact camera where you don't have to worry about focus, poor light and stabilization. Something you can just quickly grab and capture whatever is going on in your life and the footage always looks decent is very appealing to a lot of folks.

With 14 they just need biger sensor and they will get the crown back ❤

Still have the Hero2 here (and in working condition). Did buy the 10 earlier this year, as it was on sale, and I didn't see much added value for me (apart for the cost ;-) ) in the newer 11/12/13 versions for me. Especially enjoying the internal stabilization, which gets so much smoother FPV sports action (windsurfing, biking, skiing...), compared to the old Hero2.

I have the 10 and really wanted to buy the 12 and 13 respectively but there simply wasn't enough to entice me. Though the 10 switched off at -2 Celsius and now I got the Action 4. And not only in cold weather. And nothing's worse than losing your footage. I take even losing 5.3 to 4K and Reelsteady to Gyroflow if I just have my footage! I really love my GP10 but also hate it. Don't know if they improved on reliability vom 10 to 13.

There are many avanues of improvement that gopro isnt doing To start off, senor size which will help with dynamic range and low light Both DJI and Insta have bigger sensors on the their action cam and with that, massively superior low light capabilities Next we have codecs, all three cam companies still havent dipped into making proffesional codecs available like ProRes which will help attract more advanced users

I think the problem GoPro is facing is that it’s reached product maturity. For example, the iPhone. Take a look at the iPhone 15 and compare it to the iPhone 16. They aren’t that different in the grand scheme of things compared to 2010 models when yearly changes were more drastic. Another example can be seen in console gaming. Graphical fidelity while still on the rise is not nearly as dramatic as it once was generation to generation. In general, I think that the more a product is refined and revised the closer it gets to its “peak” form. When that happens, there isn’t a ton you can do to set it apart from its predecessors.

I've watched all your videos - they're great! I need a camera for indoor teaching (whiteboard and me standing). My budget allows for the Sony a7 III (€1150), a7C (€1400), or ZV-E10 (€650). Which, with what lens, would be best? Or should I just use my iPhone 15 Pro? Thanks!

I agree 100%. I started using GoPro with the Hero 9 and now getting each new model, I have 5 of them. I am happy with them for sure. But I also agree with you that GoPro needs to strive toward bringing more significant upgrades to the newer models.

Great video Z. I am currently using the 12, and I love it. I will say this because it doesn't do as well with low light situations as some of the newer cams, specifically the Action 5 Pro. When I'm in the market again, which is probably a few years off I will be considering the newest with the best nighttime capabilities. I think that is the only thing left for GoPro. Everything else is great. So yea, that would be the biggest selling point for me next time around.

I get what PictureProfile is but what dose the gamma in for example, PP8 do? You can change the gamma to so many different PP names?

Hi, Hope you are well. The minimum shutterspeed achieved by sony a7iv is 1/30s, whereas sony a7c ii has 1/4s. Also the fastest shutter speed for sony a7iv is 1/8000s, but in 7cii it's 1/4000s. I am inclined to sony a7cii because of lesser weight as i travel much. But I am really worried if the shutter speed config of sony a7cii will concern ? e.g. if I am shooting some waterfall, or flying bird, will it be blurred in a7c ii ? sorry, i have bit less knowledge on shutterspeed range. looking forward to your kind suggestion please. I totally agree with your philosophy. Too much everyday time is spent on doing things that you don't even want to do.
