James was still a little less than two weeks away from turning 20, but close enough. Cliff was the oldest at 21, then Kirk at 20, and Lars (younger than James by just a few months) was also still 19. If Dave had still been with them, he would have been the oldest, also being 21, but closer to 22 than Cliff was. Ron was also 19, and between James and Kirk, birthdaywise. So yeah, most of Metallica (members and ex-members) at that time weren’t even legal drinking age. Not that this fact stopped them, of course.

On the first two OVERKILL albums, he used a Ric bass (similar to Burton, whu used a modified Ric), but switched to a B.C. Widow and the "clank" sound. Dave Ellefson had it early on as well, and I'm sure you think of other metal bassists to used it as well in the "early" days. Burton used a wah pedal, something a lot of bassists didn't use.

This is from their first LP which came out in 1983, and it's an absolute classic - these were all songs that were written before Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton joined- but they still made these songs their own. They did two 40th Anniversary shows here in San Francisco (essentially their hometown). The first night they played tracks (at least one from each album) chronologiacally. The second night they started with their newest album (Hardwired to Self Destruct) at the time and went chronologically backwards. They repeated no songs and you knew they were going to end with this track from their first album. It was in my head the whole walk home to my condo; great night!

I think they need to check out the Thing that should not be in Seattle, or Harvester of Sorrow in Seattle. Those two songs are IMO WAY better live than the studio version, and just help prove why James is one of the greatest frontmen of all time.

As I've mentioned here many times before, I saw them live in Melbourne, Australia (when they were supported by Kyuss - later to re-emerge as Queens of the Stone Age, which you must get into!) and they are awesome live! The first song I ever heard of Metallica's was "Battery" - it's so infectious. (and yes - this was very early Metallica - but I think there's so much more metal for you guys to check out, such as Soulfly, Machinehead, Sepultura, etc. ❣

SOOOOOO good to hear you (again) going back to the birth of Metallica; there are too many artists (Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger, REO Speedwagon for the most part) where it's like pulling teeth to get you to go back to the pre-Superstar era. But I guess nobody can deny the power of Burton-era OG Metallica. "Kill 'em All" next, perhaps?
    Lead Guitar: Kirk Hammett.

That James Hetfield sound is partly because he was young, and partly because of how the music is mixed. They didn't put in bass so much in those days. That's why the Black Album was so popular, they cranked up the bass.

agreed, this album has always sounded a bit "tinny" to me. i absolutely love it, it is one of the greatst metal albums of all time anyway, but i would have loved for the production on this album to have been better, with more bass.
