It’s basically about Southern California gang life & and gun violence. The line in the song “if one guy’s colors and the others don’t mix, they’re going to bash it up”
My dad died young and unexpectedly in 1991. I found Offspring Gone Away a few years later and it really helped articulate how I felt in a way that i struggled to find on my own. I really made a connection to it and it is soooo different than anything else I have ever heard from the offspring. Last week my brother died young and unexpectedly. I could really use an Offspring Gone Away reaction right now. It would make me smile when there feels very little to smile about. Thanks.
Wickedly FUN Band that is still going STRONG. This is a very Southern California song. The Baggy Shorts era. The early 80’s through the early 90’s were very violent times from LA, the Beaches, to the Inland Empire, & San Diego. Not to mention Central California. The Gangs were going at it BIG Time vying for control. It has flattened out, a little, in most areas, but not all.
It wasn't that violent. 98% of the citizenry didn't even notice. The only reason I knew was because my wife was an ER doc at Harbor UCLA. If you didn't live in Inglewood, East LA, or Watts ... not an issue
Well@@theccpisaparasite8813define “not very violent”. Between 1985 to 1992 I worked as a Law Enforcement Officer in SoCal, so I guess my perspective is a bit biased. I would imagine that it also depends on what Region you were in. In the later part of the 80’s, right or wrong, San Bernardino was considered the murder capital of The USA. The Dead don’t always make it to ER Doctors; they go straight to the Morgue Respect to ALL ER Doctors. True American Heroes. ✌️
I think a hard hitting smash it of theirs is "The Kids Aren't Alright" they definitely hit hard on young adult issues. This band was outstanding with great messaging in the 1990s.
I remember when this came out (1994) and i played it full blast, summer's day, all the family around and my 4 year old niece going absolutely nuts and headbanging. Great memories, great song. The 1990's took the best of the 60's, 70's and 80's and mashed them all together.
Great to see you guys getting some 90s punk/alternative rock in. I am still surprised that you still haven't reacted to any Green Day yet on this channel. That needs to happen. I recommend starting with Welcome to Paradise or American Idiot.
This is BY FAR my fav song of theirs, then Self Esteem. We could all learn from our Grand Parents favorite sayings like "If you do not have anything nice to say, don't say anything"
Loved playing 'Self-Esteem' with the kid's bands in the late 90s-early 00s, love 'Pretty Fly...', really dig this tune, didn't know it was them. Cheers, RSR, keep on keepin' ooon. ✌🏼😊🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
This verse tells you all you need to know: By the time you hear the siren, It's already too late, One goes to the morgue and the other to jail, One guy's wasted and the other's a waste...Powerful. Another serious and deep song disguised as fun.
Fun Fact: The band enlisted their friend Jason "Blackball" McLean to deliver the famous phrase, "Gotta keep 'em separated." "[He] had kind of a distinctive voice," said Noodles. "He grew up in a Mexican neighborhood, all his friends were Mexican, he had the slang down, the accent. He was a Scottish cholo from Whittier. So we asked him to come in and do the line. He wound up doing it in the video, too." - this song was on Rock Band 2
And he still does the voice and is the hype man before all live shows. If you ever been to one of their shows they have the best stage turnover entertainment ever.
So happy I stumbled onto your channel one day. I love your videos and your positivity. It's awesome watching your reactions to my favorite songs from my misspent youth! This made my day! ❤
Classic! Glad you finally got to hear this one. Such a catchy tune. I suggest The Tourists--Don't Say I Told You So (1980). For Amber, I suggest these shows: Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Tales From The Crypt, Moonlighting, and The Dukes Of Hazzard.
This band plays happy music to serious lyrics. "Gone away" is one of the saddest sings ever, but the music is happy. Five finger death punch covered it and made it their own and bring the tissues. Video is amazing.
One of my favorites from this group. And like you guys I first fell in love with the great music in this one. But after several listens, I started to hear the lyrics. And then I was really blown away by not only the music, but the deep meaning of them. Actually, a lot of their songs are deep, of have some sort of social commentary.
Absolutely the First Time hearing this!!!! --- I'm an (50's thru 80's) mostly rock fan and this was cranking ( awesome ! ) . This left me wanting to hear more so I may have to buy this CD to add to my CD collection !
Dexter Holland, the singer and primary songwriter, is a legit genius. He has a PhD in molecular biology. The title of his doctoral thesis is "Discovery of mature microRNA sequences within the protein-coding regions of global HIV-1 genomes: predictions of novel mechanisms for viral infection and pathogenicity." He also owns his own hot sauce brand.
The Offspring actually started as a hardcore punk band in the late 1980s; this was their commercial breakthrough in 1994. "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" was in 2000 when they went for a much more pop friendly sound and started headlining 20,000 seat arenas.
One of the first bands/albums that I purchased as a teenager that changed my life! Along with Green Day - Dookie or Insomniac and Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell or White Heat, White Light, White Trash and Bad Religion Suffer or The Grey Race and Rancid - Let's Go or ...And Out Come the Wolves. These are other bands and albums you should check out.
My intro to The Offspring was playing Crazy Taxi, I love that game to this day and still play it from time to time, and I've loved The Offspring ever since, I got to see them with Korn and L7 and they were a seriously fun band live, and their lyrics on all of their songs are deep and thoughtful, a great band.
Opening conversation got me thinking-- You guys could do a live stream where each of you play songs for each other that one of you has heard already. Suggestions from each other, and from the viewers. Make an event out of it!
For really early stuff my instant recommendation is "Dirty Magic" from their second album, Ignition. From the same album as this track, the title track "Smash" can't be missed. If you want to be really surprised, listen to "Pay The Man". That one will really catch you off guard.
I used to work with The Offspring's bassist (Greg Kriesel) in the late 80's. He was in a different dept of the print company but I knew him because my best friend was his immediate supervisor. I remember he used to talk about his band but I didn't think much of it as I knew several guys who had been in bands hoping to make it. A couple of years later (1991 I think) my friend Russell (his former boss) called me up saying "Put on MTV right now!!"(this was when MTV still mostly played videos). I did and he said "Take a good look at the bass player" and I recognized Greg right away. It was "Come Out and Play", the video you guy just watched. I was blown away and glad to see them succeed. They had a lot of hits and this was their breakout song that made them. Too bad I never saw Greg after they made it big.
Great reaction! On a different note, I have 2 Iron Maiden suggestions I believe will blow your mind. First is Hallowed Be Thy Name ". Second is "Fear Of The Dark " from their Rock In Rio album. There's over 20 years between the 2 videos. Notice the energy is the same. They're celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025. Legendary band! Thank you!🤘😎
One of my personal favs of theirs, personal brag, me and my BF at the time had followed this whole tour, we were at every show of the NA tour, and got to be in the "Gotta Get Away" video from this same album and tour , we're in the crowd scenes moshing away...lol. love it.
You nailed it, Amber. Im a little older, but I love me some Offspring. They are a fun band, often with funny lyrics, but then would occasionally drop these pop-punk tracks with deep dark lyrics. Gone Away and The Kids Aren't Alright are awesome examples of this
For more FUN rock gotta check out "Electric Callboy", a mix of heavy rock, EDM and pop music. Like attending a heavy metal show and a EDM rave begins in the middle, they have not put out a bad song in 3 years. Start with "Hypa Hypa" to get the mood, then "We Got The Moves" or "Pump It" if you like some work out music.
Jennifer Lost the War was the first song of theirs that I heard, and fell in love with. Real great song with a deep message. I was bummed when their GH missed it.
I definitely took the "you're under 18 you won't be doing any time hey, come out and play" to heart. I am so so lucky I did not get in more trouble as a teenager. lol The Offspring were big for me in Middle School leading to HS.
J...you are correct sir! From Tony Hawk 2. This is a legendary song from the 90s. It was one of those rebel songs back then, used to street race to this lol. It was also one of the themes for ECW Wrestling
It wasn't on Tony Hawk 2 (which is a game I've replayed even recently and was obsessed with back in the day) but it was the ECW entrance theme song or Pro Wrestler RAVEN. Love seeing you two react to this one as it's always been a favorite. Hope you do The Interrupters "She's Kerosene" sometime. :)
I just saw them in concert for the thirtieth anniversary of the Smash album. This song and Self Esteem are off it. Someone once described them as happy punk. The music is very upbeat but the subject matter always matters. Some more songs to give a spin Mota, Walla Walla and last one of the greatest love songs ever Me and My Old Lady.
Oh my goodness, this was on the radio and MTV (back when that was still a thing) all the time! It was on Rock Band 2, Tony Hawk ProSkater 4, all of the Crazy Taxis, Forza 5, and a bunch more. You could not escape this song when it came out. Did you know Dexter Holland is also a virologist amc holds a PhD in Molecular Biology.
28 or so years ago I worked at Pizza Hut and when I worked on the weekend perforating crusts with my manager, she would always sing to me, "you got to keep them perforated" to the tune of this song. To this day when this song comes on I still sing her alternate lyrics in my head. 😂
Amber is right on for this one with the lyrics. "It goes down the same as a thousand before, no one's gettin' smarter, no one's learnin' the score. This never-ending spree of death and violence and hate is gonna tie your own rope." And the section she referenced is "By the time you hear the sirens, it's already too late. One goes to the morgue and the other to jail. One got wasted and the other's a waste."
this reminds me of when the song came out and me and my friend Cheryl would listen to this song and her favorite part of the song was when they said you gotta keep em separated so seeing amber enjoy that part brings back memories
I've said it before, The Offspring is my all-time favorite band. I want to get lyrics from I Choose tattooed on me, because that song really describes who I am as a person. And songs The Meaning of Life and Change the World really hit me to my core when that album came out
I musta rewound this song on the tape three times in a row daily for the first week. Yes TAPE. Thankfully it was the first song so it was so much easier! (Didn’t have a cd player yet)
such a cracking song and from mid 90s and my college years. So good and the rest of this album is a true masterpiece. Smash is the Album name but also a track which is as good as every single track on that album. A rare thing when I never have to skip a track so I recommend highly. Genocide, Not the One, What Happened to You and Nitro Youth Energy to name a few are very much overlooked and brilliant
Went to a Big Day Out festival in the 90s and saw these guys. They pulled some random guy from the crowd up onto stage, who was dancing around like crazy, having the time of his life. He ran in every time for the "You gotta keep 'em separated!"
My daughter was 3 or 4 when this came out and it was on FM radio so often. She and I could only make out “hey hey hey come out and play”. Thank you for the lyrics insight.
I noticed that the house they are at is the same one from the "Self Esteem" video! It is the same yard, kind of long and skinny, with a house with an attached garage. I remember hearing that a lot of their songs are about how they saw the kids that came around their early concerts. The girl in the Self Esteem video with the oxygen tube, was one of their superfans.
This is the first song I remember hearing and loving from The Offspring. It was all over radio when it came out - such a different sound at the time, it was great!
Aside from Tony Hawk, J-Man, this song is played every time there is a fight by an Ontario Hockey League team that I follow and I love it! Thus the line "you gotta keep them separated". It's so upbeat and intense and by the way ...... with all due respect to you Jay ...... Amber, you look absolutely stunningly gorgeous today! I love you both and love your reactions. Keep doing what you're doing. We luv ya both! This song get's me motivated and wound up. I love it. Great reaction Jay and Amber.
My late buddy(RIP Larry) had a band that said "Gotta lift and separate um" along with a hand movement across their chests. Older folks might remember the bra commercial back in the day.
2:00 The Offspring one of my favorite bands growing up they get a little stick from the rock community but they went mainstream and got money thats the goal
This was a MASSIVE hit! Dropped in late high school for me and we cranked this out so much! Never understood what all the lyrics were until quite a few years later.

The music is very upbeat but the subject matter always matters. Some more songs to give a spin Mota, Walla Walla and last one of the greatest love songs ever Me and My Old Lady.
Youth of the Nation by P.O.D. is another great song with a powerful message
Offspring's album "Smash" was amazing, every song hits.
28 or so years ago I worked at Pizza Hut and when I worked on the weekend perforating crusts with my manager, she would always sing to me, "you got to keep them perforated" to the tune of this song. To this day when this song comes on I still sing her alternate lyrics in my head. 😂
Saw the Offspring a few years ago at the Aftershock Festival in Sac. Still great.
I was in high school when this came out. Loved it then. Thanx for reminding me of this
Amber is right on for this one with the lyrics. "It goes down the same as a thousand before, no one's gettin' smarter, no one's learnin' the score. This never-ending spree of death and violence and hate is gonna tie your own rope."
And the section she referenced is "By the time you hear the sirens, it's already too late. One goes to the morgue and the other to jail. One got wasted and the other's a waste."
Nice!!! More Offspring, please! Try "Gotta Get Away" ☮️
this reminds me of when the song came out and me and my friend Cheryl would listen to this song and her favorite part of the song was when they said you gotta keep em separated so seeing amber enjoy that part brings back memories
Gang violence in southern cali in the 90’s was crazy
This Offspring album is amazing from start to finish!!!
THPS2!!! Yes! Amazing game series!! The gameplay, but the MUSIC was AMAZING!!!!
The riff y'all love was "liberated" from Agent Orange - Bloodstains", which Offspring proudly states themselves, and also have a cover of
I agree that the next songs by The Offspring should be “Get a Job” and “Want You Bad”. Great reaction…thanks.
