In 1996, when ZRock went off the air, this was the last song they played. I was on patrol that night and pulled my patrol car over, cranked up the radio, rolled down the windows and just immersed myself into the song. When the song ended, the radio station truly did fade to black. No sound whatsoever, as if I had turned the radio off. I sat there and wept. The end of an error. It is a night I will never forget.

I love your reactions!! You two are amongst my favorites!
There are many songs to react to that are still incredible from this band. Among them that you haven't done yet, (I suggest studio versions first) Fight Fire with Fire, Creeping Death, Battery, Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Orion, Damage Inc., Blackened, To Live is to Die, and Dyers Eve.
For live versions, I STRONGLY suggest 3 songs off of their Seattle 1989 concert. They aren't incredible studio songs, in my opinion, but the live version really gets my blood pumping. They highlight James Hetfield's powerful vocals really well.
Sanitarium, The Thing That Should Not Be, and Harvester of Sorrow. I look forward to a whole lot more of your reactions!!

the thing I've always loved about this song is Kirk's guitar work. we know the song is about self-harm, but if you really listen to the three guitar sections he plays, it really does take you through the beauty, the pain, and the chaos of someone's thoughts that are in that place... that darkness where self harm becomes an option. The things you can't live with, the things you can't live without, and the confict between beauty and pain and just wanting the battle to end one way or another. I can almost imagine James going to Kirk... "hey man, imagine the pain and conflict that must be inside someone at these moments... make those emotions with your guitar. Tell me through the notes... I'll sing the words, you play the emotions." To this day this is still my fav Metallica song, one of the greatest metal songs of all time, and I think Kirk's building solo at the end, after James says goodbye, is some of the best guitar work of all time. It's so hard, and so beautiful at the same time. And even more amazing, these fools were writing masterpieces like this at what... 18yrs old? Serious, serious talent...

Your Personal Top Ten for each genre or decade of music.
Which are the most memorable and most enjoyable for you and what have you learned by being introduced to so many different styles of music in such a short time?
We have enjoyed watching you both and I know we’d love watching you groove along with the second reaction to your favorites.

I and 3 others played fade to black in talent show. Everyone said we won the talent show contest but they gave the reward to some country singer. It was done at Cass Midway down where all the country folks are. That's probably why the lonely country singer won. But everyone says we should have won. I was the lead Guitarist, Frank Ingle was the Rhyme guitar, and then there were two singers. The crowd went wild and I was truly glad they liked it. This was back in 1992 or so.

While "Master of Puppets" is often seen as Metallica's best album, for me it has always been "Ride the Lightning." Have loved that album since the first time I heard it, all those decades ago. For another song that starts slow and just keeps amping up the further it goes, you should get back to Damn Yankees. You reacted to their biggest power ballad once years ago. Suggest this time you check out "Come Again." A song that starts out as a pure power ballad, but keeps building, eventually leading to an absolutely insane Ted Nugent guitar solo. It may be his best solo since his early days as a solo artist. He extends it quite a bit during their live "Uprising" concert in 1992, but it doesn't appear that performance of the song as a stand alone is still available on TH-cam. You'd have to pull up the entire concert video, which is still on here, to find it. The entire concert is worth checking out though for any hard rock music fan. The encore where they do songs from each of their prior bands, Styx's "Renegage," Ted's "Cat Scratch Fever," and "You Can Still Rock in America" by Night Ranger was always a great way to end their shows. I saw them live twice, and of the 69-70 bands I've seen live, they are top 5 in just how good they sounded live.
