ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

I say we reinstate Christopher Plummer's singing into the movie for a theatrical reissue for 2025 in honor of the 60th Anniversary. Who's with me?
i am, they must
Count me in
I agree

Me 😊
2:34 OMHeavens... that little chuckle of Christopher's was never included in the original release of the movie... The one right after he gently touches Julie's nose.
So thankfull the original still exists I would love to see the movie with all the original soundtrack.
Christopher Plummber was a fine man in his day and to know he can sing is something else. Plummer and Lee’s vocal are not far off from each other in the least bit. Plummber vocals are more raw. Lee’s vocals are clean. I can appreciate both tho
I was just saying they should've used Plummer's vocals for "Edelweiss" with the family because Georg hadn't sung in years, and "Something Good" because he was a bundle of nerves and excitement declaring his love for Maria, and Lee's vocals for the festival performance!
A beautiful scene from the movie and I think Plummer's original vocals matched Andrew's vocals perfectly...
I agree 100%. Christopher Plummers voice for sure to keep it genuine
They should have used Plummer's voice. It's great that we have this excellent mix. Does Edelweiss exist with Plummer's voice? If it DOES, it's time to edit the movie so that Plummer's COMPLETE performance is saved for future generations!
It does, someone already uploaded that version here on TH-cam a while back. The audio version will be released on Dec 1st
Do you have the link to that video? I can't really find it anywhere

Now release the movie with Plummer’s vocals
When they sing together, Chris sounds better with Julie’s voice than Bill, especially the last “good,” which sounds more like an emotional exhale than an actual vibration of the vocal cords, perfectly fitting the scene.
Who is Bill?
@@Checkmate1138 Bill Lee who dubbed Chris’ singing in the finished film.
i'm sobbing to this. his original vocals are so...theyre everything to me. this is the only romance scene ever to be honest
I’m with you, and so are so many people!
I cry watching this too. It's so sweet but reminds me of my wicked childhood and how my life ended up amazing and I never thought it would. I don't have much money, but I am so blessed while my childhood was wicked.
@@totallyrufus when the past was wicked we appreciate the present even more! You must have done something good !
I don’t understand why they need to dub Christopher’s voice. He clearly can sing and his singing gives soul to the movie. Please reinstate the movie with original sounds
It seems to have been "the thing" if someone wasn't a "standard" singer - hence Marnie Nixon dubbing for Audrey Hepburn, Rossano brazzi in South Pacific, and (travesty), Harry Belafonte being dubbed in Carmen Jones
The great big majority of people commenting here prefer Christopher’s voice.
Many were in tears, because it’s so honest and emotional.
@@trilliarobinson7862 Yeah, back then it was common to do that if the actor's voice wasn't "perfect"
Couldn't agree more!
yup..after all he sounds good so far.
So wonderful to be able to hear this song the way it was originally recorded! Bill Lee did a great job dubbing when asked to but they should have left it alone.
I sincerely hope many people watching these clips are younger folks. I’m 60, but I'd hate to think that this incredible film will simply vanish for younger generations
I’m almost 31
I’m in my mid 20s and I come back to this video all the time!
I'm 30, had this on two VHS tapes and wore both tapes out completely. Just watched this movie with some of my younger cousins around 13 and 17 years old. This musical and this amazing recording won't be forgotten
I’m 20 and watching this😁
This is the best thing I've ever seen! Please, please release the whole film with Chris' dub too, eventually 🥺
are you funding that effort, sweetie? or just doing some braindead gushing?

They did, the Super Deluxe Version! It says in the description of the description of this video!
@@gretchenortner I meant the film, not the soundtrack
This is the ultimate love story :) timeless
I’ve seen this beautiful classic 10 times in my life! And yet I never imagined Plummer was that good of a singer. I usually hate when someone dub sings instead of the real actor. May he rest in peace!
Too handsome for words.
Christopher could sing! I don't get why they dubbed his voice.
You can tell he's not a very strong singer. Listening to him here and when he sings Edelweiss, he has a hard time holding onto notes and cuts off before he should. He is much quieter than his costars because he lacked breath control. Christopher didn't want to sing in the first place, so he had no intentions to improve his ability so they dubbed him, which was perfectly fine by him. I personally think he sounds lovely and his voice is more believable for his character who hasn't sung in over a decade due to his grief. Captain Von Trapp shouldn't sound so practiced and polished.
Actually, Plummer said in interviews at the time of the film being made, that he did want to sing, and that he had coaching to improve his singing for the role.
@@KEW13rocks
I never thought of it like this with the grief part omg
Not as well as Bill Lee.
His vocal performance is wonderful now that we're familiar with the movie and story, but it likely would have been distracting if you were seeing it for the first time for not being quite up to the same standard as the others in the film.
@@VideoArchiveGuy
I saw somebody say it would have made more sense to have Plummer sing because the Captain hadn’t sang in literal years… so for him to have a perfect voice makes no sense lol
I'm well into my 50s, and have loved this movie as long as I can remember.... WHY did they not use this?
THIS IS EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WANTED

I saw this movie when it was released. I was 13. I fell in love with the music and bought an LP of the soundtrack. I played it over and over day after day.

I agree that this scene works so great with Chris's vocals. You can hear the emotion and passion in his voice.
On a different note... Is it just me, or does this musical remind anyone else of Jane Eyre?
It has always reminded me of Jane Eyre, too! There are a lot of similarities, and there is something that makes both stories timeless.
There should be a 60th anniversary edition where this version of the recording is used instead. THERE SHOULD BE.

I remember seeing this as they reissued it into theaters in 1974 or 1975. IT was showing with a film that I cannot remember, perhaps it was the Australian film "Walkabout", but not sure. I was three or four when it was originally released.

This is so romantic bur why she love Maria instead of baroness 😂😂lol❤❤❤ romaceeee
I can't watch this without laughing 🤣🤣. Back then too. A totally hot dude reaches in to kiss you but as soon as lips touch.... she breaks out in song 🎵 🤣
I've watched all of these... I'm legitimately baffled. Why? Why over-dub this with someone else? I think it's about polish or something, and I think I would expect to prefer what I heard originally. But Christopher was PERFECTLY excellent, particularly at the storytelling in song. So in-character - I hear Cap't Von Trapp singing.
Can someone explain why they changed the vocals?
Chris wasn't so confident with his singing.
They thought Bill Lee's voice would go along better with Julie Andrews' because Lee was a professional singer quite like Julie herself. However, listening to this it's clear they really did Christopher Plummer wrong because not only did he work a lot on his voice to be able to sing for the movie only to be dubbed over and now we can fully see/hear how great he sounds and that his voice blends perfectly with Julie's.
Bill Lee dubbed so many people during that time period, for example The Street Where You Live in My Fair Lady, even though the original actor was also a Broadway star. Bill Lee is really a wonderful singer and I think he does a great job of matching the tone and emotion of those he's dubbing. But back then I think expectations/standards were just a little higher. I think Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls is one of the first examples I can think of where they kept his (charming but imperfect) voice, because of his celebrity status I guess, and maybe because he didn't want to be dubbed, who knows. Nowadays we are used to hearing actors giving it a go, sometimes with dubious results 😅
