I think it's safe to say that Gene Kelly's rain dance scene has reached iconic status. I worked as a recreation therapist in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in which I'd feature Gene in a program and show this--the patients' faces would light up. Once while I did this program, a newly admitted patient who wasn't adjusting well came. When I showed the rain dance scene, he got excited and opened up: "Oh my goodness! I remember when this came out--I met my wife that year! I loved Gene Kelly's dancing. I loved 'Singin' in the Rain'--it was raining when it opened in the theaters." I replied, "It sounds like life was imitating art." He laughed and said, "Yes, it certainly was." After that, this patient stopped being argumentative and became social with everyone. What an effect Gene Kelly had on this man!

I just read your story, actually it's the second time I have read it. I have a friend who works as a diversional therapist in a nursing home. One time when I was young, a torrential summer downpour occurred, such that looking out our house's windows was like being in a car wash. I got excited and ran outside in shorts and bare feet. I never had any dancer in me, still don't, but I ran around the yard in circles with my arms outstretched, face to the sky and feeling the rain bathing me. Whenever I see this, I remember that happy moment, and feel Gene Kelly is expressing how I felt.
I love the last line where he says, “I’m dancing and singing in the rain” after the cop was giving him a stern look. Not only was at the last line of the song, but he’s saying it to the cop as if to say, “What are you going to do? Arrest me for being happy?” So brilliant. A truly magical scene.

I was born in '52 and by the time that I was old enough to watch this movie I was also old enough to fall madly in love with Gene Kelly! He still makes my heart skip a beat. A bit scary at my age!! 💓
God bless you. You are the same age as my father. May both of you march on for many more years, may our good lord willing! Live long and prosper friend.
I saw this movie when I was very young and was fascinated by the joyfulness of the characters and their dancing. I can still feel his pure joy when I watch it again. I think too many people nowadays spend their time blaming each other. and forgetting the simple and pure joy.
*Fun Fact:* when they shot this classic scene *Gene Kelly was running a fever of 103 Degrees* but *STILL* put on this magnificent Performance *Side Note:* his *LAST* Movie was *XANADU* with the late great *Olivia Newton-John*
if you had to choose a "100 moments that define humanity", this scene could stand a good chance of being included. Beautifully choregraphed, beautifully shot, and shows you don't need CGI to make iconic cinematography.
This movie was my Great-Grandmother's favorite movie, and she would always sing this song to me when I was a child. Now I'm entering my Junior year of High School. She passed away from Cancer two years ago. I wouldn't be where I am now without her. She was, and always will be, my favorite person. She never said a mean thing about anybody, and up until the end, when I had to see this energetic and loving woman frail and sickly in hospice, she never stopped smiling. I miss her more than I think I'll ever truly understand. I hope that in the afterlife, if one even exists, she's tapdancing there, happy.
Every time I watch this it breaks me out in goosebumps and sometimes in tears of joy. It's beautiful, iconic, unique and very special. I can't explain why it's special. It just is. Thank you Gene Kelly. This is one of the final movie clips I would like to see before I die.
@cathysies5751 At my funeral I would love to have Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" played followed by Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from their film "Life of Brian".
My grandma showed me this when I was a kid and when it rained we’d actually go out in our rain gear and play in the rain and sing this song. I’ll always cherish this song ❤️
Singing in the rain. Finding the joy even when the rain pours. Not just dealing with it but accepting it joyously and diving headlong into life, with all its trials and tribulations.
One time while it was raining over here in Beautiful, Sunny California, my now 14 year old granddaughter (who was about 5 or 6 back then) & I had just gotten off a bus going home & it started raining down on us and we started jumping in puddles, laughing & dancing in it & it brought me Back to this very song & dance. When we got home, her mother (my only daughter) looked at us funny & asked what happened to us and why were we both drenched from head to toe & my granddaughter said to her MaMa, “MoM, grandma & I were singing, laughing & dancing in the rain ☔️ Now THAT was a Great day. Thank you Mr. Kelly ☔️🥰👏🏼🥰👏🏼🥰👏🏼🥰👏🏼🥰👏🏼
It was kind-of improvised thing as script said that Alex sings something from musical while brutally beating the Writer and this was only such song Malcolm McDowell knew. It is damn good film from Kubrick and novel actually has way better ending.

Boy, is there any better display of euphoria? Gene Kelly in this number -- still and always -- warms my heart and makes me smile. Every movement, every step, every expression, he's simply perfect here. Joy joy that I can watch it whenever. Thanks for posting.
I watched this randomly after not seeing the movie for a good 20 years. It has a different feel to it now. Such optimism, joy, and carefree sentiment. Reminds me so much of much simpler, more beautiful times.
I can’t believe how close to a century its been since that decade… Its gobsmacking and flabbergasting how quickly time flies, right? I was only born in 2005, I hardly have had but 18 years in this world, and yet it all flies by so fast without any regards… But hey, gotta enjoy it while it lasts, so go outside any day, rain or shine, and be happy. You might make someone else’s day so much brighter! Its the little things!
This song has been playing in my head for nigh on 70 years . Not every day , but it is always lurking around the corner , just waiting to catch me . ...
It's 7am. Cold, dark and raining outside. My mood was really, really bad. After a few views of this song I'm going to have a much better day! My parents weren't even born when this came out. Musicals and romance get on my nerves, not my cup of tea. There is some kind of magic here. Thanks for the upload!
Iconic moment! I wish that this film got the Oscar, or at least a nomination. Because of An American in Paris winning the prior year, Singin' in the Rain (a much better film IMO) didn't get a chance at a Best Picture Oscar.
Gene Kelly grew up in Pittsburgh - next to my elementary school, and my mom went to high school with Gene and was friends with his sister. Like everyone in our neighborhood, we were all so proud of him. Years later, in 1996, when Gene died, I was working at ABC News. Peter Jennings made a remarkable editorial decision. Rather than run a standard obituary, he decided to run this four minutes and seventeen seconds of magic, It was all you needed to know about Gene Kelly.
Esse filme não tem palavras que o tornem melhor, é divino, e o Gene kelly transmite uma alegria tão grande que é como se fosse uma festa, que espetáculo!!!
To be honest I've never liked musicals, but yesterday I saw the rerun in 4k at the cinema, I went with my brother who doesn't like musicals either. I had always heard about the movie and how for many it is one of the few movies that can be classified as perfect, but I was still skeptical. To my surprise and my brother's, we loved it, seriously all the staging is incredible, it definitely shows why people say that the 50s were the golden age of Hollywood. I want to end by saying that if you have never seen it, and you have the opportunity to see it in a theater, do it, I assure you that you will not regret it.
RIP Gene Kelly (August 23, 1912 - February 2, 1996), aged 83

Fun fact: that was not a fun fact.
Looking 29... Dancing keeps you youthful...
An unforgettable classic … simple as that. The great incomparable Gene Kelly.
Imagine telling someone in 1952, that people in 2024 will be able to watch this scene on small handheld devices anywhere or anytime we wanted to?
Mental ❤
Действительно так..........😊❤
They would have looked at me in disbelief! And then they would laugh it off.
Back in the 1993 you could only dream of a mobile 📱 phone until 99 when I got my 1st mobile phone. Now in 2024 with smart phones you can watch old videos, amazing. 😅😊
imagine people in 3023 watching this only with a chip in theyr brain connectet to the net ...
I was born in '52 and by the time that I was old enough to watch this movie I was also old enough to fall madly in love with Gene Kelly! He still makes my heart skip a beat. A bit scary at my age!! 💓
Makes sense! I was born in '81, a smile like that can melt any heart, any time, any age!
God bless you. You are the same age as my father. May both of you march on for many more years, may our good lord willing! Live long and prosper friend.
Everyone needs to skip occasionally... especially at our age.
I fell in love with him too. Me, born 1950
I saw this movie when I was very young and was fascinated by the joyfulness of the characters and their dancing. I can still feel his pure joy when I watch it again.
I think too many people nowadays spend their time blaming each other.
and forgetting the simple and pure joy.
One of My Dad's favorite Movie's
R.I.P Dad
This brings back some great memories
Rip
He's just a happy guy doing his own thing, enjoying the moment, just existing, I want that
*Fun Fact:* when they shot this classic scene *Gene Kelly was running a fever of 103 Degrees* but *STILL* put on this magnificent Performance
*Side Note:* his *LAST* Movie was *XANADU* with the late great *Olivia Newton-John*
I would like to know how many takes I took. My bet would be 3 .
@@marklassanske2716Upon a quick google search, it doesn’t say how many takes specifically, but the shoot for this scene took two or three days.
That’s the sign of a true professional, even though he was very sick he still gave his all
Herrlich, möchte gleich mittanzen. Im nächsten Regen mach ich das trotz meiner 80 Jahre❤
if you had to choose a "100 moments that define humanity", this scene could stand a good chance of being included.
0:40 its 71 years and still iconic
A l’époque où les films faisaient rêvés et mettaient de bonne humeur
I live in NYC no cop would stop you for this, singing in the rain, keep on living joy to all!
Every time I watch this it breaks me out in goosebumps and sometimes in tears of joy.
It's beautiful, iconic, unique and very special.
I can't explain why it's special. It just is. Thank you Gene Kelly.
This is one of the final movie clips I would like to see before I die.
Exactly the same with me 😊
😮
Same! Play me this before I die. And play this at my funeral! ❤
@cathysies5751
At my funeral I would love to have Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" played followed by Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from their film "Life of Brian".
I come here every once in a while. This was played at my grandmas funeral. I miss her so much
I'm sorry for your loss 😢
Really old times were beautiful and we lived that beauty. 😊
I wish they would make more musicals! Clean and fun!
i wish they would too. the old music is the good stuff
I remember this so well . I loved it and have thought about it so many times.
I wish so much too.
Yes clean. There were no drive byes in that movie
Encanto is clean and fun
How low we have sunk sense the days of pure class.
One of the best songs from one of the best musicals of all time.
Thank You, for telling us.
Only Stanley Kubrick can make such a beautiful song so dark.
Mechanic orange ?
@@MarwanJamal-bt5qd a clockwork orange.
@@JeffBird86 sorry, in french is "orange mécanique" 😉
It was kind-of improvised thing as script said that Alex sings something from musical while brutally beating the Writer and this was only such song Malcolm McDowell knew. It is damn good film from Kubrick and novel actually has way better ending.
@@MarwanJamal-bt5qd, In portuguese too, “Laranja Mecânica”.
Gene Kelly isn’t he one true legend can’t be how quickly the year have past I was only 26 when we lost gene Kelly now 54 and we still listening to his wonderful music and a fantastic actor which you may be gone but isn’t going to be forgotten for a very long time and thanks for sharing
No words can express the beauty of this song, it brings so much joy to our lives ❤ one of Hollywood’s best performances.
70 years old song, I can still feel the rain listening to this. Extraordinary dance, music and sound effects.
Rest in peace gene Kelly you will be sadly missed by us all
This year gene would’ve been 111 years old if he lived
When it was necessary to be talented for making movies. Wonderful scene, wonderful movie and wonderful Gene Kelly.
THE MOST WONDERFUL DANCE ROUTINE IN A MOVIE OF ALL TIME! MR. KELLY ...G O A T
That sheer joy of Kelly's performance brings tears to my eyes.
Hi I'm 71 now and love it. Because of this movie I washed my daughter's hair at 5 yrs old outside in a rainstorm singing this song. ❤
Puts a smile on my face everytime, hats of to gene Kelly for doing this whilst ill and having a high temperature. Some say he had to go hospital after doing this scene
This is really music 🎶
Que cena maravilhosa! Como assistir e não sorrir? Impossivel !

Give Gene Kelly an umbrella make it rain on the set.. Man will give a classic piece Of Art, timeless masterpiece!
UM CLÁSSICO NUNCA MORRE...UMA PENA HOLLYWOOD TER PERDIDO ESSA ESSÊNCIA DO QUE É SER CLÁSSICO....AGORA É SÓ MILITÂNCIA......
I don't know why, this just moved me to tears. It is beautiful.
My granddaughters sing and dance to this classic.!!!
They are 6 & 4.!😊
Aww he had a high fever while filming this. But he did AWESOME
One of the greatest performances of all time.
I can’t believe how close to a century its been since that decade…
Its gobsmacking and flabbergasting how quickly time flies, right?
I was only born in 2005, I hardly have had but 18 years in this world, and yet it all flies by so fast without any regards…
But hey, gotta enjoy it while it lasts, so go outside any day, rain or shine, and be happy. You might make someone else’s day so much brighter! Its the little things!
I was born in 2005 too
This song has been playing in my head for nigh on 70 years . Not every day , but it is always lurking around the corner , just waiting to catch me . ...
Simply iconic! The genuine joy of this is still radiant and timeless!
Forever A Masterpiece movie !!! The musics, the dances, especially at that time, even until today, still feels unbelievably astonishing!!!
It's 7am. Cold, dark and raining outside. My mood was really, really bad. After a few views of this song I'm going to have a much better day! My parents weren't even born when this came out. Musicals and romance get on my nerves, not my cup of tea. There is some kind of magic here. Thanks for the upload!
Una de las mejores escenas musicales que he visto, con una canción que es simplemente sublime y entrañable
Sono d'accordo totalmente 🤩
Фильм посмотреть снова бы
Iconic moment! I wish that this film got the Oscar, or at least a nomination. Because of An American in Paris winning the prior year, Singin' in the Rain (a much better film IMO) didn't get a chance at a Best Picture Oscar.
Martin W I find this movie and An American in Paris to be equally wonderful
Coisa besta
And to think that this scene what filmed in one take only and with Gene Kelly running a high fever! The mark of his greatness.
My grandma used to play this video for me and my brother. Now after 5 years since her death this brings back sweet memories
Perfecto!!! Always my best song from musicals and Kelly the best dancer ❤
I love it when actors have extremely animated movements, rare thing to see really
Didn't see this film fully until last year. Still good at nearly 70 years old
Me not until 2014
I love this movie and in love with this song and love the way he dance 💖☔
Mind to share thr Movie name?
@@summerrain8403 Singin' in the Rain
This song always reminds me of my mom. I hope it brings love and hope to new generations just like she did
To be honest I've never liked musicals, but yesterday I saw the rerun in 4k at the cinema, I went with my brother who doesn't like musicals either.
The vibe is AMAZING! I LOVE THAT SONG!!!!!
I've never heard such a happy song in my life.😀
This scene and song just never gets old
One of the best scenes in movie history!
