I know he wasn't a big fan of the role, but I'm glad that in his later years, he at least came to appreciate the impact that it had. I wonder if he ever grasped just why so many people of all ages fell in love with him as the Captain. He's been in many things, but I feel like there's a reason The Sound of Music remains one of his greatest legacies. Honestly, having watched the film so many times, I don't think anyone could have done it the way that he did. He gave such a layered performance in the role. His Captain Von Trapp was many things --- stern, cold, intense, tragic at times, humorous, romantic, righteous, and kind. And it's throughout the course of the film that we see these different layers peeled back a little bit at a time as Maria melts his icy heart. Christopher Plummer balanced all these sides of the Captain expertly, which allowed him to MORE THAN hold his own on the screen alongside the magnificent Julie Andrews. As far as I'm concerned, there's never been another romantic hero like him.

So true and so beautifully written!
I don’t think he knew how wonderful his acting in this movie was… Which is a bit sad.
But he did know the viewers loved the movie, and that mattered a lot. He loved the audience, that’s why he preferred the stage, where he could connect with the audience.

What a joy to hear him speak...and especially for his admiration for Julie...if that isn't pure love and respect for her... "If it had been anyone else other than Julie Andrews. .."he would not have taken the role. Love Christopher Plummer!

He couldn't see how much power and strength he brought to that role. It was a PERFECT performance. It was the most important part of the movie..Or that he brought Joy to Billions of People all around the entire planet. Best movie ever made. You had music, scenery, Julie Andrews and children, ...but at the heart of the movie was THE Love story. Absolute one for the history books. The Dance between him and Julie was the most Romantic ever filmed. PERIOD. All of our dreams. Most handsome man ever..Best actor in the last 70 years. Truly missed😓

The dance is my favorits scene too. The off-screen chemistry between Julie and Christopher fueled the emotions needed in that scene beyond just acting. Without that friendship, the scene would just have been a scene not an iconic scene.

His background was theatre. I had observed many well known actors/actresses going from theatre to films. While most of them tend to over talk and over act, he was one of the few who could act so natural and well in films.

Robert Reed, who played the father in “The Brady Bunch” was another who had much experience in theater, but then went onto TV film, but acted naturally and didn’t over-act. He also had to be persuaded to take the Brady Bunch role, and it was said he often complained about his character because he thought TV to be so much lower than an actor could do on the stage! (And after the show ended, he got so many offers to act for TV productions, that he stayed with it, anyway!)

This is actually a common story -- actors finding themselves in productions they never wanted or sought (and conversely, far more commonly, not getting the acting parts and jobs they DID want). Neither Clark Gable nor Leslie Howard, for instance, wanted to be in GONE WITH THE WIND: as it was, it took a lot of bribing or convincing to get them to consent to play the parts of Rhett Butler and Ashley Wilkes, respectively.

    • @timmellin2815

Or, it just might have been him getting older and more mellowed and realizing his legacy in the film. It wouldn't seem to be believable for his own self to dislike something he was doing.......that would be self dislike and not realistic. The only time in the film I sensed he really wasn't "into" a particular movement part of a scene he was supposed to do, was when he waved as he made his exit in the onstage Salsburg festive during "So Long, Farewell." Those few seconds seemed to be contrived as he was not really interested.

Robert Wise directed this movie because the start of his next big project " The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen was delayed....so to fill the time he thought he would just knock out a musical set in Austria ...LOL....that is true btw. Christopher Plummer loathed this movie and only later in life for a 50th reunion of cast did he soften his attitude about it and acknowledge its importance but prior to that he was very dismissive of the film and actually fairly uncomplimentary about it and his experience working on it, but he always held his co star Julie Andrews in very high esteem, they were friends and he never said anything negative about her....it was just about the movie in general. Plummer was a great actor, he did some great work and continued to do so right up until he passed away.

Too bad no mention was made of my Dad, the late great Bill Lee, who provided every single note “sung” by Plummer. It was Bill Lee who sang Edelweiss and every note. Plummer is a magnificent actor and amazing pianist, I’ll certainly give him credit.

    • @michellekeeling3392
      @michellekeeling3392 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Having listened to some of Chris’ original vocals I actually prefer his voice over Bill’s particularly on Edelweiss. It is more raw, vulnerable and fitting with the thawing of the Captain and opening him up to his children again. Bill may have sung with perfect pitch, tone and intonation but lacked the depth and complexity of the performance that Christopher gave. I really hope they release a version of the film for the 60th anniversary next year with just Christopher’s vocals in the songs. It would be a fitting tribute to such a great man.

@@michellekeeling3392 you’re certainly entitled to your opinion. But there are several things you did not take into consideration which I feel the need to point out. When a “ghost voice” steps into an actor’s shoes it’s very tricky. Dad’s performance was NOT “pitch perfect “ at all. He had to leave that approach at the door or it would not have been believable. He approached Edelweiss with a sense of restraint for that very reason. Too, the director Robert Wise had given Dad direction he wanted and there was a dialect coach listening to every nuance. On top of all this, Dad found a middle ground which made it believable and STILL had to match Plummer’s lip movements which he said was very difficult because he hardly opened his mouth. So excuse me. Bill Lee did an absolutely phenomenal job.

Most famous people seem to do that. They go like "I don't like that character! I'm more than this character! I've done so much other work!" but they seem to forget, that we will watch all of it and enjoy some, but they will always be this one first character we got to know them for.

      see?
i bet it's frustrating as heck to always be reduced to this one role. (yet it pays your bills?)
he shows up in quite a few movies! i will always remember him from Star Trek (because that's where i saw him first).

@@luvastandardbred8270 I truly hope you are joking. But then if you never bothered to watch anything else with him you have no idea just how extraordinary he was at so many different roles.
He was immensely talented and had already played in several films, including one of the main roles in The Fall of the Roman Empire. This film boosted his career but he certainly still would have had a very good one without it. He had already made a name for himself in theatre too. When you watch his Hamlet, which is available on TH-cam, you understand why he must have disliked being reduced to only TSoM.

So totally totally agree with Robert Wise on the importance of casting Christopher Plummer as the Captain. After having seen numerous stage productions of the story, including Broadway, no one even came close to achieving the same impact and were/are indeed cardboard cutouts. He was outstanding set the screen crackling whenever he came on, with an intensity which stays on with the audience. Oh that dance with Maria... I almost stop breathing every time I see it.

What was cool about Christopher Plummer is that he met Maria Von Trapp as a teenager. He fought to change the play's version of the Baron. CP said that Maria was such a lively woman that she wouldn't have fallen in love with the play's flat character. CP was the ultimate professional. His portrayals so vivid and real were a joy to watch.

I remember some years ago I ran across an item in which, if I'm remembering it correctly, Christopher Plummer was taken to meet a cousin of Georg Von Trapp, for character research. But he didn't learn much about the man he was playing. The cousin could not understand why anyone would want to know, as according to the cousin, Georg was just about the most boring person who ever lived.
