    ABOUT THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
The film was released on March 2, 1965 in the United States, initially as a limited roadshow theatrical release. Although critical response to the film was widely mixed, the film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time-surpassing Gone with the Wind-and held that distinction for five years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries. Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000.
The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time, and the fourth greatest movie musical. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
    ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

I love how Liesel is just playing along! Her sarcastic tone and not-so innocent look when she sang “innocent as a rise” 2:26 it’s quite ironic how he’s saying she’s shy and naive and doesn’t know what she wants but it’s actual the other way around! She knows exactly what she’s doing

Specifically he's talking about how he's "older and wiser" than she is, but at this age range, it's less about age in a sense and more about lived experiences. I have a couple of friends that are two years older than me (I'm 18 now) and one of them is about in the same stage of life that I am, except she bought her first car. She basically has little to no clue what she's doing, so I don't usually ask her for advice regarding life. The other one is married with her own apartment. I usually ask HER when I need help with how credit cards work, or ideas for how to pay for college, or realistic estimates on how much rent is on average, or anything like that.
16-18 is a range where a lot happens in a short amount of time. Most people, when they turn 16, are juniors or sophomores in high school. They're kind of just trying to get through life, probably started their first job already if they hadn't two years ago, and are learning to drive. This is also the time that a lot of kids open up their first debit card so they can make purchases online without parental consent.
17 is kind of like 16 except your parents usually let you do more things by yourself.
18 is where you usually start to look for your first full-time job, decide what you want to do for higher education, open your first credit card, and basically start preparing yourself to be on your own.
We have proof that Liesel lives with her dad, is probably still going to school, and is VERY wealthy. Making her almost entirely ignorant to how finances work, (although she may not need this information due to the fact that women usually stayed at home to raise children during this time and never needed to work), she's probably not super aware of the rest of the world because she's upper-class, and because somewhat controlling/red-flaggy boyfriend here is a postal boy, she's probably not thinking about the fact that a lot of his interest in her could be related to money.
What we know about him is he does have a full-time job. We don't know if he lives on his own, but there's a 50/50 chance he _might._ If this is the case, he may genuinely be a little more experienced and aware of the world than she is, but we don't know for sure. He _might_ be someone who could offer Liesel decent advice on life, however, in this time period he may not have been able to afford higher education due to it majorly being considered an upper-crust luxury, so we actually don't know if he ever graduated or will graduate high school. (He could have a summer birthday.) That being said, assuming that Liesel has received higher education of the time, he would have the street smarts, but likely she's way more aware of what's happening outside of Austria and the war, which would make her much more equipped to run from it. So, there's potential for this dynamic being mutually beneficial, but honestly with the way he's talking there are a lot of... potential red flags. Ya know, "you don't know what you're doing but I can save you!" The fact that Liesel doesn't notice how potentially alarming these statements could be is also a case for how inexperienced she is. He's kind of putting words into her mouth, even though Liesel seems perfectly confident in this song. Notice how she mostly goes along with it to please him? Also just the line, "you *need* someone older and wiser telling you what to do."
However, this is making a lot of assumptions.
Honestly a lot of that comment was me looking at my behavior as someone of that age. I knew that I wasn't prepared to enter adulthood yet-- heck, I'm still not-- and that the future was zooming toward me like a train.
This song is kind of saying they both feel like they know everything, which is common in this age range, while it's clear they haven't had as much lived experience to live up to that statement.
I hope that my argument makes sense....

Fun fact. In an early take the costumers forgot to put in Charmian Carr's anti-slip pads, and she slipped off one of the benches and went right through a glass panel. No serious injuries, but they had to wrap up her foot, and she completed the rest of the scene on an injured ankle. To anybody with dance experience, you'd know it must have been agonizing. To her credit, she finished it. In older cuts of the film, you can see the cast, but when it was put on DVD in the 90s, it was edited out so you can't tell.

The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.

This is my favorite song in the movie, it’s full of so much irony and foreshadowing draped in a dreamlike teenage romance. Rolf talks of how innocent and naive she is and how men will try to take advantage of her, meanwhile we can tell from how they behave with each other that she’s a little less innocent than he’d like to believe and she, in fact, takes advantage of his own naivety about her in order to get physically closer to him, the very thing he’s singing about her needing to be protected from. He talks of being older and guiding her to make good decisions but he’s just a kid himself. He also needs guidance and he’s also not fully prepared for the real world and ultimately he’s guided by and taken advantage of by the wrong people.

He even sang "16 Going on 17" to me when I turned 16. I can't believe how much people misunderstand this song! It's not about the girl relying on the boy because she can't be independent. It's about a boy trying to make a lame excuse (he's only a year older of course so it doesn't make a difference) to be her boyfriend essentially. And she knows how silly this is which is why she basically repeats everything he says and makes it seem like the logic of him being only a year older works. She's humoring him! It's very flirty and fun and silly! Not at all misogynistic in my opinion! :) (but let's forget about what Becomes of Rolf later...we don't talk about that..)
