Fun fact. In an early take the costumers forgot to put in Charmian Carr's anti-slip pads, and she slipped off one of the benches and went right through a glass panel. No serious injuries, but they had to wrap up her foot, and she completed the rest of the scene on an injured ankle. To anybody with dance experience, you'd know it must have been agonizing. To her credit, she finished it. In older cuts of the film, you can see the cast, but when it was put on DVD in the 90s, it was edited out so you can't tell.
I eat so in love with him. I met Maria in an airport as a teenager about 5 years before she died. Was nothing like i expected. Draped in fur and jewelry. I think I expected Julie Andrews skipping through a meadow. He died 10 days before my 54th birthday :( Rip sir

Dan Truhitte is the actor who played Rolf in this movie. He was also my voice teacher throughout high school(he now lives in NC), and he changed my life for the better! He even sang "16 Going on 17" to me when I turned 16. He's a wonderful man and I owe him so much for helping me find confidence as a singer and as a person. ❤️ Last I heard, he's still teaching voice lessons, and that makes me so happy!
In an hour I´ll be 17, so this is my last chance to sing "I am 16, going on 17". Why am I kinda sad? Maybe one day I´ll get back to this comment and be all nostalgic. To be fair tho, I can very soon sing "dancing queen, young and free, only 17". When a door closes, a window opens I guess.
Om goodness literally the exact thoughts I’m having rn lol!! I’m about to turn 16 like tomorrow and so I HAD to listen to this song!! But it’s honestly so sad cause time just flies :( but yh at least I get to relate to “Dancing Queen Only 17 ooohhh yeahhhh” soon :) !!
He ran away because he wanted to make sure the situation didn't go beyond there. The point of that action was to show that his character was grown up enough to not just get intimate with a girl because she was being forward with him
To be fair? At the start he was considered not good enough for her by her military father. When he betrays them it's because he's scared of what will happen to him even if he goes with her family. He's a kid.
I remember first time seeing this as a little girl. How sweet and beautiful this scene is. They both sing so clear and truly awesome. They dont make movies like this classic anymore. Love it. Thank you.💕🇩🇰
I find it funny how Liesl sings "timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my ken." But she is the one who has been trying to kiss Rolf and Rolf is he one who's timid and shy.
@alison Barlow I don't know how old you are, but this is one of those songs that you take literally when you watch it as a child, and then when you're an adult you realize both of them are not what they claim, and the lyrics are ironic. He's putting on a front of knowing what he's doing because he's older, when in reality he's scared to kiss her and has no idea what he's doing. She's putting on a front of being naive and easy for him to make a move on, but the reality is she knows exactly what she's doing and that she's far more mature than him. It's also a reference to traditional male/female social structure, where the men appear to dominate the women, but the women are the ones actually pulling the strings.
Thats the whole irony of the song. It's meant to be ironic in that way. She's the aggressive man and he's the shy girl. But his ego thinks it's the other way around and she's indulging him.
i turned sixteen this year and oh man i’m never gonna stop singing this- until i hit seventeen of course. then my folks better be ready for The Year of Abba.
Even more realistic because they both think that theyre so high and mighty and wise and "not babies" but you can definitely see the childlikeness in them hehehe
Back then to, women didn't have much say so on their own so they sadly had to pretty much depend on men to get anywhere in life working under them, marrying a particular one, etc.
I was so obsessed with this movie as a child (and still am), I would act this scene out for my grandma every time we watched it. And she sat there and smiled the entire time, rest in peace Grammie ❤️❤️

The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.
@@dutchik5107 Wrong. Girls mature in specific ways sooner than boys. That has nothing to do with how naive an individual is. In this case, the character was very naive and vulnerable to men who had enough charm, money and power. It was supposed to show that she needed to take more care.
@@akaneriyun4774 I am well aware. This is set in WW2 where Captain Von Trapp is called to serve for the Nazi army - which he then runs away from with his family and they escape into Switzerland. Just because that is what the character does later in the story, does not mean that the lesson being taught here is any less valid.
It's cool because in the instrumental section, Irwin Kostal actually goes through multiple different dances: 3:15 contredanse, 3:37 the waltz, 3:40 the polka.
well, your expectation is definitely one of the choices you yourself decided. It's not the movie's fault, you are just young :) this is just based on true story and this might actually happened.
The whole scene is portrayed as a beautifully innocent moment in time for two teenagers falling in love. She is smitten, as is he, and the song is a tribute to youthful naivete that everyone eventually grows out of at some point. Adults would scoff at the notion that "seventeen-going-on-eighteen" is any wiser than "sixteen-going-on-seventeen," just as they might scoff at the purity of young love like this.
I think that the notion that seventeen is so much wiser than sixteen is silly is kinda the point of the movie. He talks down to her in the song, and later betrays her. I don't see how you get just purity from this song
@@alexschalk5439 They were both being playful - he wasn't actually talking down to her. He says "timid and shy and scared are you" while she's the one who's all over him. He knows she's none of those things, he's just playing. The romance was cute and innocent. He was just swept up by the nationalist propaganda and entirely brainwashed like so many young men. It's a sad and scary commentary on radicalism and the way it corrupts people who are otherwise lovely.
When life gives you 100 reasons to cry show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. And this scene right here is a heck of a good reason to smile! :-)
I remember when my mother showed me this. She loves this scene. She would say how she missed how people dressed like this and real people would dance and sing without fake voices.
@@algumacoisa1232 typically when the actor in a movie is autotuned it typically was just the choice of the people editing the music trying to get it "perfect". Take Beauty and the Beast 2017. Even Josh Gad, a famous Broadway actor and the voice of Olaf from Frozen, was autotuned and we all know he can sing

we were watching this in music classes today and we learned that Leisl was doing all of this on a sprained ankle and she still did an amazing job may the actor rest in peace💞
Yah. I had just discovered about that yesterday while reading an article about her. The words were not "rogues" and "ken", but roue' and kin (kin means family or relatives). Quote from grammarist.com/usage/roux-rue-or-roue/ >> A roué is a debauched man, usually an elderly debauched man. The word roué is borrowed from the French, it is the past participle of the verb rouer, which means to break on the wheel. The wheel in this case is an instrument of torture or punishment, which is perhaps fitting for the trespasses of a debauched man. Note that roué retains the accent. (end-quote)
@@cacatr4495 The word "ken" means: "one's range of knowledge or sight", and that is entirely applicable to the context he is speaking in. He says, "totally shy and scared are you of *things* beyond your ken", which would imply that he's referring to *things* that she would learn about that she does not yet know, not about people beyond her family.

To her credit, she finished it. In older cuts of the film, you can see the cast, but when it was put on DVD in the 90s, it was edited out so you can't tell.

I find it funny how Liesl sings "timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my ken." But she is the one who has been trying to kiss Rolf and Rolf is he one who's timid and shy.
Maybe he just doesn't want to knock her up before she's even 17. Gotta take things slow you know.
Exactly! Plus he was the one who ran away after they kissed-- not her
I think that's the "beauty" of it. It was all upside down after all
@alison Barlow I don't know how old you are, but this is one of those songs that you take literally when you watch it as a child, and then when you're an adult you realize both of them are not what they claim, and the lyrics are ironic.
I felt so betrayed when Rolf joined the nibs later on, it was like that meme: I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU HOW DARE YOU?

The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.
@@redd_cat eventho ya know. Girls mature faster than boys....
@@redd_cat, funnily enough, he ends up going Nazi on all of the Von Trappe.
Which gets proven as childish later in the story when he betrays her and her family.
It's fun, definitely "exciting & new"
I think that the notion that seventeen is so much wiser than sixteen is silly is kinda the point of the movie.

+1
Yah. I had just discovered about that yesterday while reading an article about her. It says that the staff forgot to put a no-slip pad on her shoes so while doing the dance, Liesl slipped and got her ankle sprained and had to shoot this scene with injured feet. But hurray, she did an amazing job. This is actually my favorite part of the movie. ❤️
She died :(...?
This was also the last scene they filmed in the movie
Kit A. Oaks if they stay back

You are sixteen going on seventeen
Baby, it's time to think
Better beware
Be canny and careful
Baby, you're on the brink
You are sixteen going on seventeen
Fellows will fall in line
Eager young lads
and rogues and cads
will offer you food and wine
Totally unprepared are you
to face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared are you
of things beyond your ken
You need someone older and wiser
telling you what to do
I am seventeen going on eighteen
I'll take care of you

I am sixteen going on seventeen
I know that I'm naive
Fellows I meet may tell me I'm sweet
and willingly I believe
I am sixteen going on seventeen
Innocent as a rose
Bachelors dandies, drinkers of brandies
What do I know of those?
Totally unprepared am I,
to face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared am I,
of things beyond my ken
I need someone older and wiser
telling me what to do
You are seventeen going on eighteen
I'll depend on you
His face at 0:28 I can't!
Thank you!!!
**Maybe, it’s time to think
