  • Picked this little gem up at the local train show a few weeks ago. It's a fairly old Atlas (made by Kato) Alco RS-3 in Missouri Kansas Texas (The Katy) colors. Let's see what we've got!

      Thank you, Phil! Be sure to check back for next Monday's episode! I won't give any big spoilers but it's a similar mechanism, similar symptoms, but totally different repair!

      Thank you, David. i really enjoy working on these old Kato made units because they're so easy to take apart and reassemble with a single screw driver and only two hands! If you want to see frustration go take a look at the Bachmann U36B I did a while back. Or the Roco I have coming up in a few weeks.

    Atlas Kato units typically have the copper contact strips only on the opposite side of the gear. I have taken several apart, and also found a diagram of similar units.

      Yep they only conduct from opposite corners. I own and have worked on about half a dozen or so of this vintage. While it was great for the time their next generational attempts were far better.

    N gauge 101+ I was always afraid to work on N till I've seen your channel, not so bad for so small!!! Fairwell to 027 size and HO!!! N is so Neat

      I really like N scale. Only problems are the price and the availability of different locomotives and roads. H.O. scale really is the sweet spot for price and variety. And i've got a bunch of it in storage. And as far as budget used stuff. When you compare something like an old Athearn Blue Box H.O. scale locomotive to something like an old Bachmann, Life-Like, Roco in N scale as far as quality goes the old Athearn units are FAR superior. So it's easier to find old great running H.O. locomotives than it is in N scale for similar money.

    Well shoot, now I need to go to the other video to learn how to take the shell off. I bought one at a train show, or traded for one. Wanted to get it off and clean mine up but it isn’t cooperating.

      You just have to use the lid of the box. I do something similar with the KCS GP7 / GP9 if I remember correctly

    This from atlas and the Kato gp38/gp50 were landmark locos in n scale

    • @Trains-With-Shane

      Yep these early split frame units were revolutionary in N scale. Such a simple and effective design back then. and the basic formula stayed that way for YEARS.

    The focus looks a little soft at the start of the video, it looks better once on the test track. A stunning transformation after the cleaning.

      Back then I was using a combination of a GoPro and old iPhone to film certain segments. Hence the difference in quality. Newer videos are filmed in 4k and don't suffer bad focus as often.

      @@Trains-With-Shane I enjoy watching you work on the MKT loco's. Reminds me of the Taj Mahal song (She Caught the Katy and Left Me a Mule to Ride).

    I see you've added cushioning to the trim board at the end of your Inglenook layout. Were you having train overshoot problems? (I'm making my own version of Steves Trains fine switching layout.)

    • @Trains-With-Shane
      @Trains-With-Shane  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the layout is just as I received it from Steve. If you're talking about the blanket that it's sitting on that's just because I usually set it up on the bed and I have to fold the corner of the comforter up like that because the bed frame is right up against my work desk as it's in the same room.

    • @reefwalker3381
      @reefwalker3381 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Trains-With-Shane Thanks for answering. I was curious because you've got a dark brown strip on the trim board facing the 3 branch ends that I hadn't noticed in Steve's own video. Now that I've gone back and re-watched it, I can see it there, too. Probably a good idea of Steve's that didn't make it into his narration.

      @@reefwalker3381 I really appreciate the interest in it! It's honestly one of the best purchases i've made in N scale railroading. Being able to just toss it on a bed, counter, etc. it almost gets more use than any other piece of track that I own. beat out only by the loop track on the disgusting workbench as I often run trains around there while i'm working on other stuff.

    If it runs backwards rather than pull it apart again couldnt one just flip the direction switch on the transformer ?

    • @Trains-With-Shane
      @Trains-With-Shane  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this instance "backwards" is relative to the direction the long hood is pointed. Of course making it run in the opposite direction is a simple matter of switching the current. But there is often a lot of talk about whether the Alco RS locomotives should be ran long hood forward or long hood backwards. Different railroads preferred different answers to that question.
