เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 ต.ค. 2018
We're just getting started. On this channel you will find myself (Shane) and my brother (Chris) taking on projects with little to no prior knowledge most times. Our endeavors will be powered by what information we can find online such as TH-cam How-To's, Google searches, Facebook and forum posts, etc.
Will it Run? N Scale Athearn F59phi in TRE colors. Trains with Shane Ep. 109
This one I had my doubts about. Not due to the listing but do to the rough ride it apparently had on its way to me. This is an older Athearn F59phi in Texas Trinity Railway Express colors. A commuter rail that is local to me that runs a few regular routed in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. Let's see if this old thing runs or if we have to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Today we hit the disgusting workbench running and try to repair the Atlas N Scale Alco C628 Demonstrator that I picked up a few months ago. Let's see if we can figure out what the problem is, and more importantly, how to fix it! For a look back at the unit check out the video link below. th-cam.com/video/vfL5GtlTjjw/w-d-xo.html
Christmas Special Presentation. Will it Run? Trains with Shane Ep106
มุมมอง 454หลายเดือนก่อน
A month or two ago Peter, The Alco Diesel Guy here on TH-cam, reached out and wanted to know if I'd be interested in a Christmas locomotive exchange. I immediately agreed and set about finding the perfect gift. We cross shipped and I've had this in my possession for a few weeks now promising that I wouldn't open it until Christmas day. Now that Christmas is coming to a close for 2024 I figured ...

Kato Sound Box. N Scale sound without the headache of flaky DCC - Trains with Shane Ep103

Having been working with DCC in both HO and N scale locomotives over the past decade or so it has become very clear that N scale just isn't up to par with HO scale in regards of reliability particularly when as it pertains to sound locomotives. This is not unique to any specific manufacturer. I wish it was as reliable as DC. But it just isn't. But what if you could get sound with DC reliability...

Thats an old release or F59phi - that chassis runs a lot faster than the new ones ....
The rear windows on these units are terrible! As a note, I've found the very top comes off for access to the inside also.. ok feature, but leaves a gap over the windshield..
Really informative vlogs. Maybe one day I’ll have the nerve to try and fix or just preform standard maintenance on my trains. Quick question, do you have an opinion or just any knowledge of “microACE” locomotives. I can find very little info on them. Thanks Jim
Hey Jim. I've never had my hands on a MicroACE locomotive and don't know anything about them. I did a quick google search and something i found said "MicroACE by Kato" and if Kato is making these things they're probably pretty good runners! As an aside. Don't be scared to clean your locomotives. Proper maintenance will be the best way to prevent future unexpected repairs.
Brilliant! Thanks.
Pro tip.. to clean the contacts of electric motors. Use electric contact cleaner.. You can get it at any auto parts store or computer supply, also use can air or compressed air to lightly dry it off and to get rid of any dirt..
Always appreciate your videos on locomotive issues as I have quite a few locomotives that have never ran. I have ordered a new power pack and Kato track to start testing. I do have an FB3 unit I tested around 20 years ago that didn't run. Brand new like this atlas and didn't run, but the two FA and FB units ran. Looking forward to figuring why it doesn't run.
There is a lot of diagnostic work in my early videos, Mike. Check them out if you need tips or inspiration. And don't hesitate to post a comment on here if you have questions. I'm no master but i'll help as best as I can.
SOUTHERN PACIFIC had assigned home maintenance facilities such as Los Angeles, Houston, Pine Bluff. Four axle GE units were assigned to Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The only thing that I see, appearance wise, the SOUTHERN PACIFIC on the long hood be above the louvers.
Kato tends to take liberties with prototypically accurate paint I have found. lol. But they reward us with smooth and reliable mechanisms so I'm willing to give them a pass as long as it's good enough.
Brake ratchet on the short hood, some railroads require brake wheels.
Wheel seems like it would be quicker to operate.
Put that sound thing on a flatcar with a long extension cord
I run dcc n scale and ran dc to start and there is absolutely no benefit to running dc over dcc especially realistic opp’s . And you can get very good sound with them also just don’t be scared to hard wire something. Round and round might be good with dc but it’s garbage for other than that.
Well you must have better luck with DCC and sound than both I and my brother have because I've got units from all manufacturers and none of them are super reliable. I'd rather have no sound than the stuttering off/on of the N scale DCC stuff.
Hi Shane. Great video! Do you have any good strategy to tell the different motor types of Atlas China apart? I found out there are fast speed motors first and later Atlas introduced something called the slow speed motor and the scale speed motor. I understand scale speed is even slower (better) than slow speed(?) Spookshow says e.g. the GP38 had scale speed introduced around 2002, in 2004 the GP7/9 started to come with slow speed, though. Don't know whether that makes sense really. Different sources on the internet says you can tell the motors apart by the colour of the plastic (grey vs. black), but there are quite a few conflicting statements to find which colour is which motor. Do you have any insight regarding performance and optics? Thanks, Benjamin
I've never dove into it deep enough to catalog anything in regards to the different motor revisions. I merely know that they exist. If you watch my latest video you'll see one revision that has really crappy driveline pieces in it, lol, The Alco C628-2
Late to the party but this has so much potential with this project will checkout other videos on this,, new sub today from AUS
Thank you! It has been on the back burner for a while due to other stuff needing to use the space, Mostly chickens and a rescue cat. Now that they are in their permanent accommodations I might be able to start working on this in the spring once it warms back up.
I would pay $150 for just the F7 and rolling stock and toss the rest or give it to someone who uses Bachman's easy track. I collect NS, and an F7 was my very first N scale locomotive as a kid.
The set can be had for FAR less if you look hard enough. The rolling stock is pretty good. Although the one piece knucke couplers are kinda crappy. Easy enough to swap out.
cool channel just getting my grandson his first Kato train set. we live by the railroad and every time the train goes by he runs to the door to watch it go by! and his grandpa like these trains too! hang in there and I think I will be purchasing this sound box soon.
Thanks for stopping by, Pat! Kato is exactly who i'd recommend for a kiddo's first set.
no expert here but the detail on that is awesome.
That's what Scaletrains is known for. Especially in H.O. scale. Their N scale stuff like this one is pretty good. Intermountain and Broadway Limited both have pretty good detail on their units as well. Kato, Bachmann, and Atlas typically have far less detail. But are generally less expensive as a result. However with Kato you are still getting legendary reliability.
@@Trains-With-Shane Yeah im new to the hobby and recently bought my first two locos, both Kato EMD SD70m, one NS and one CSX, both DCC ready. The Rivet Counter line is almost twice the cost of one Kato even for the non DCC. I will eventually get one though.
Just in time, i received 5 cars today and being a newb i was perplexed and already set on the idea this was going to cost me more money to fix. Great idea and im so glad i found this video.
Glad it helped!
Great video. I have an old 1970 passenger car that the light inside flickers. Any suggestions how I can get the inside light to stay on?
it depends on a few factors. The car might just need a little more weight in it. But it also might be an issue of needing to be cleaned, or... possibly could benefit from a small capacitor install. There's a bunch of different stuff that could help. although, admittedly, I have zero experience with car lighting.
I have Digitrax and an MRC Tech 6 sound controller and i just bought the sound box for 150 bones of amazon and i like it a lot better.
Same. for me DCC/Sound in N scale just isn't reliable. No matter how OCD I am about track care, etc.
Add the Kato wireless Smart Device Controller (22-019) so you can run everything from your phone. Total game changer for DC layouts!
I've never liked the lack of tactile feedback or feel using screen devices in that way. I like physical buttons and knobs. I'll bet there is some kind of setup I could cobble together that would allow for wireless + knobs, levels, etc. Possibly interface my Protothrottle with it since it's basically just a wireless Zigbee device, lol.
I just converted an old bachmann split body to dcc. Added led lites front and rear and that engine runs smoothly pulling nine cars behind even a low speed. Even if you say it's junk, it's reliable junk😂
If it's got the black plastic axle gears then it's as reliable as you're going to find from that era. But the older motors are pretty prone to overheat and fail. The good news is that they're incredibly easy to work on. At least everything after the first gen Hong Kong units. Which, sadly, were far more reliable, lol.
Wow that was really interesting. Next time our loco mechanics come in i'll see if they got shoo glue in their tool kit 😂👍😊
They'd better! They aren't real mechanics if they don't use shoe goo, obviously! lol.
@Trains-With-Shane 😊👍
Yes that is the parking brake. Nice looking model. I’ve got one of these myself and looking forward to get 2 more.
Thank you Shane for part one, all that detail but poor craftsmanship cheap plastic! Good Grief
A little time a little patience
Oh nice! A classic Snoot nose! I have an ATSF standard nose and a BNSF EX ATSF SNOOT. Kato is the best! Keep rolling out the good content Shane!
Thanks Pat! Kato are still my gold standard for good runners. I love their stuff.
@ oh much agreed! I am a Kato Freak!
Oh yeah! She lives on! Great job on getting this engine working Shane! Very impressive 3 part video!
Thanks Pat!
@ you are welcome!
Very nice job repairing this alco c628 demonstrator locomotive by atlas. I also use labelle products when I repair my trains on the gears and some times Bachmann lubricants.
thanks Matt! I've never tried Bachmann lube. I'll have to give it a shot when I run low on Labelle.
lf it were me, I'd clean out that shoe goo, slide the "dog bone" back onto the shaft, and secure it with a little CA. Just my 2 cents.
I did try cleaning it out with an xacto blade and tweezers. Unfortunately the shoe goo is just a little too elastic and tough.
Seems to be a common failure when Atlas switched to this style. I had an Intermountain with the same problem.
It's a pretty crappy design choice.
@@Trains-With-Shane ya. The old hex cut into the flywheel was much better.
Nice job
Shane, I wonder if removing the thrust washer from the end of worm gear would give enough clearance to reduce the drag and improve the speed?
I just tried that and unfortunately it didn't help. But.... It inspired something that DID work. Since I knew where you were going with the thought process I decided that i could easily file down the other end so I took a piece of sandpaper and sanded down the end of the little cup that fits up inside the brass flywheel. That gave me probably an additional .035" or so clearence, And that was enough to un-bind the driveline and lower the friction! It doesn't exactly zoom back and fourth because ya know "scale speed" and whatnot but it moves a lot easier than before and certainly quicker than it was. Thanks for the brainstorm, Ron!
Oh that is awesome!
That don't look like no DASH 8 locomotive
Well. Atlas said it was. It's no Scaletrains that's for sure.
All my Kato have a big hex piece at the end that fits into flywheels, never saw one like that, looks like ❤it designed to fail, like that shoe goo, going to have to try that
Agreed. I've never had a Kato fail from something stupid like that.
Flywheels are pressed on ,very unlikely to be the culprit
Likely between the worm and the plastic that fits on that shaft, needlenose tweezer to pull that piece out
You could of used Wathers Goo as well.
Never heard of it but i'll look it up!
As i mention in your other video I have 4 of these. One is running slow but the motor is turning fast. I was told the axle is probably broken. I have not open it to see. If it's the same a yours, I might try just super gluing it. I went to Atlas website to see if they have the part and they don't. I have one question is did you take the trucks off before you film this episode? I notice from your first video and mine that the trucks at the beginning this video they were on backwards. Just wondering.
I had split the chassis to swap from a DCC decoder to a DC board for easier testing.
Shane, I hope this works for you. In the back of my mind, I've got feeling that the excess shoo-goo in there is going to create some problems with the driveshaft and the worm gear. Unfortunately, the replacement part you need: #520104 is currently unavailable. I had the exact same issue with an H16-44, fortunately I was able to get replacement from Shapeways before they went bankrupt.
Yeah But it's the best I can come up with without spare parts. I try to minimize the liklihood of issues by shoving the shoe goo down with the cup of the shaft hoping that the impression that it creates will allow enough room for the cup to float. Although... since it's all held rigid in the frame and there is no deflection it technically doesn't have to wiggle, just turn, lol. We'll see what happens. it's still curing as i type this.
There is a universal that fits on the end of the motor shaft on both ends inside the brass counter weights. The universals are plastic and are prone to slipping on the motor shaft, the universal shaft fits in those. Because the plastic universals slip on the motor shaft, that causes slip. I fixed mine with a drop of super glue.
watch the rest of the video 😁
All my modern Kato and BLI N scale engines have the keep alive and I use the bli rolling thunder with a 10in powered subwoofer. Running the BLI big boy Paragon 4 with that sub sounds like an O scale vision line lol. The Kato sound box is a great an on 👍
Nice gift, it's Jan 2nd bur Happy New Year Shane! Thanks
Thank you William! Happy New Year to you as well!
Great video! Toys R Us used to sell various Life-Like sets back in the day. The Life-Like sets that were once sold at Toys R Us stores were the Golden Rails set with either a hi-nosed Santa Fe GP38 or a high-nosed Union Pacific GP38, and the Freight Express set with a Santa Fe blue-and-yellow warbonnet F-unit. The cars that were included with the Golden Rails set were a Hooker tank car, a Maine Central gondola, an Erie-Lackawanna boxcar, a caboose for the Santa Fe or Union Pacific. The Freight Express set came with a cattle car, an Illinois Terminal gondola, a Texaco tank car, a Lehigh Valley box car, and a Santa Fe caboose.
I used to have one of those blue and yellow GP38's. It was a pretty smooth runner.
My newer engines that are mostly DC, run really smooth and crawl slow, but I'm still wanting to go DCC, but sound isn't important to me. I have a couple that came factory with sound and they are tinny. I usually just turn the sound off. I would probably run something like you have shown for sound. I'm even considering pc controlled setup maybe down the road. Oh yeah....I've been looking for the same MKT 172 and found a seller on marketplace with it in a big lot, but he's never responded to my messages. I'm guessing the lot sold, he never deleted ad and is ignoring messages. LOL. He's from up by the KC area.
I think my big lot came from a fellow in Oklahoma if I remember correctly. I'm going to feel pretty guilty if ive been buying all the stuff you've been looking at. Although. The lot I bought I was the only bidder on it, again on eBay. DCC Control is far more reliable than DCC & Sound I have found. But I'm still very glad I finally picked up this sound box.
I just got one after a very long search. Myself and another guy had made some comments about one on one of the n scale Facebook pages. We both had been looking. I remember it getting mentioned about the really bad version on Ebay that had used decals, applied very poorly for 175, and how terrible it looked. I'm wondering if you were that other guy that had posted about looking for one and if you were the one I was talking to? Either way, I finally got one and not for the $250 that one guy was asking that sold for maybe that or a best offer. This more expensive one sold last month right before Turkey Day. I'm glad to see they are the China chassis since that means they are dcc ready.
We may have talked about it a while back. The conversation sounds familiar. it had been quite a while ago. I'd even talked to the guy with the poorly decaled unit before he ended up listing on eBay. he wanted $150 for it and it took all of my self control to hold my tongue and not offer an intervention to help him with his drug abuse because he was obviously smoking crack wanting $150 for that train wreck, lol. The one that sold not long before Thanksgiving was this one, lol. I made an offer MUCH lower than the $250 buy it now price and he accepted it. Still less than the poorly decaled custom one.
First thing I would do is use my Tidy Track wheel cleaner. I use the pad on one side and the velcro on the other side. I use IPA 99.9% for the pad side and run it both directions then flip the loco and do the same. Works like a charm.
I've got a pretty good wheel cleaning regimen these days. I did look at this unit a few weeks back and noticed that one of the wires has come unsoldered from one of the trucks. So that'll need to be repaired.
Add a small piece of masking tape to the side with the hex nuts and they won't fall off. Those hex nuts are a pain to get back in.
