- Join me as I review Bowser’s highly anticipated release of the ALCo RS-3 model with ESU LokSound DCC and sound.
As mentioned in the video, I recommend replacing the factory speaker with an iPhone 4 or 5 speaker, which are available from my friends at Custom DCC Supply: customdccsupply or email them directly at CustomDCCSupply@gmail.com
Thanks for watching and stay turned for more content and reviews coming soon!
You might be the first guy on TH-cam to post a video of these new run Bowser RS3s, great review! Pro tip: press F8 3 times to activate cold start, which will have a longer start sequence including the fuel prime
Thank you, glad you enjoyed! And appreciate the tip, I did not know that. I primarily work with Tsunami decoders. I’ll have to give that a try when I fire it up next.
@@ModelRailroadVideos No problem. That’s a V5 exclusive feature as Selects don’t have cold start
@@CentralJerseyRailfan Good to know, I hadn’t heard about it. Definitely going to check it out. I like unique features like that.
Wow man just wow ...that's a really nice looking engine. The sound profile is spot on too I agree it needs a speaker upgrade but I'm sure you've done that by this point. Looking at picking up one of these myself. Best wishes !
Agreed. Sadly; Once The LokSound Decoder Had Been Activated; I Also Could Not Hear A Word You Said. But; In Thanking You For The Review; This ALCO RS Loco Has Singularly Changed My Longheld Outlook / Perception On BOWSER As A Manufacturer; Being In Direct Quality Comparison To The Available Models Of Yesteryear ....Too Good !
I have that yellow building from my grandfathers layout. The base says built in 1959.
Thanks for the review. I have been on the fence about picking one of these up. Your review helped me make my decision. I just subscribed to your channel.
You’re welcome, Charles! I’m glad it was helpful in making your decision. I’ve had a pair of these on preorder since they announced them nearly five years ago and am definitely not disappointed with the level of detail and how fine they operate.
I have one in Norfolk and Western. Love the unit. Bowser exec line is quality locos.
They sure are great. Their pulling power and overall quality is exceptional. Looking forward to the next release.
Couldn't hear a word you said, but I've purchased my RS 3, PRR, I'd like a couple more, local road names, different numbers. Would have liked to get your opinion.
Thanks for the comment. You can turn on closed captioning for the video and you’ll be able to follow along with what’s being said. They’re great models that I’d recommend. Just not a fan of the factory installed sound.
Nice video. I just received my 2 Western Maryland units. Like yours, my total volume is way too high. It made it difficult to hear you describing the engine.
Very Lovely..!
This model is tooled well. I would be surprised if this unit doesn't have a #691-1294 speaker in it. The prime mover, bell and brakes sounded quite good, but that horn was...not so much. Prototype horns are not drowned out by the prime over on any locomotive and this one had the horn in the next room compared to the rest of the sounds. It could be the speaker, but the problem likely doesn't stop there.
Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. I couldn’t agree more about the less-than-optimal sound quality. I plan to replace it with a iPhone 4 or equivalent speaker. Their quality is far superior. If you’d like a recommendation on where to get them for a reasonable price let me know.
that is ESU sound for you, their horns always suck. Tsunami2 all the way!
@@showtime1004 Absolutely agree! Never been a fan of ESU for many reasons. Just can’t beat TSU.
No lit number boards or ground lights?
That is correct, nor are the markers functional.
@@ModelRailroadVideos thanks for the review.
Any tips on why I can’t get it to program a new address? Only works on 03
What type of DCC system do you have?
@@ModelRailroadVideos Digitrax, any 2 digit is fine just cant get a four digit to work. I do have the PTB100 power booster too.
thx
That’s strange. I’d recommend seeing if you can reset the decoder and then start over with the programming steps. Another option would be using DecoderPro to program the address.
@@ModelRailroadVideos ESU suggested taking out the power booster PTB 100, which worked,, odd for sure
Why no cab interiors?
There is a basic cab interior. Similar to that of Atlas Master locomotives. But it’s all molded in the same color so hard to differentiate the components.
Love ❤ PRR ❤
I have an R3 Delaware Lackawanna I customized to PRR. It sounds good but it lack pulling power despite good traction tires. Otherwise I'm ok with it. Many times I have to double up power to pull a long train..
How quietly does it run with the sound off? Is there a lot of gear/motor noise like most Athearns? My Atlas Master and ScaleTrains are the quietest. Regards, NS.
Nearly silent, much like a new Atlas Master or WalthersProto motor.
@@ModelRailroadVideos Wow that's impressive. I am going to get one! Thanks for the reply! regards, NS.
You’re welcome! Glad to be of assistance.
I drop the volume on my Ho DCC with sound engines to 40% or 50%. Harldy any distortion, but still loud enough from my experience.
Looks great but no pulling power, my copy could not pull 5 cars up a 2% grade.
Shame the number boards don't light up.
I agree! Nor are the marker lights illuminated. The overall lighting on these is pretty basic.
That idle though. You can change it to a much better one, they have another recording on ESU's website that sound much more like a 244 but that idle just sucks
Iddle seems too fast.
I’m sure this was a great evaluation. The locomotive is, indeed, impressive. Too bad I could not hear much of what the presenter said.
Thanks for the comment. I’m wondering if the audio quality was reduced when uploading the video. Thanks to comments like yours, I’m planning an updated version with voiceover. Anyway, the model is very impressive and is brass quality.
I could hear you clearly on a iPhone but the locomotive was definitely a little louder than you were. Great review of the model. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Rob
@@yrunaked4 Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed and found it useful. Kind of funny actually as I thought about yelling just to demonstrate how loud the model was.
Гарно!
I wish it sounded like an RS-3 though, to me ir sounds nothing like an RS-3, way too loud.
