I am 62 years old and a retired Aircraft Engineer. I have been watching your channel for close to three years now, and I still consider you and your brother my trusted 3D printer review TH-cam channel. It has been fun watching you guys grow. :) I took a chance and bought the SOVOL SV08 on launch day, paying $449, and have been sitting patiently waiting for your review. Hahahaha, I feel a bit more relieved about my purchase now. Keep up the great work!
I did the same😀
As someone working in aviation, but in an MRO capacity, man there are some expensive parts being designed and used. I got the early bird too! Looking forward to making some stuff to aid in my job.
Miss that camera....
You are absolutely the best reviewer on TH-cam. Everyone else gushes, or spits hyperbole. Your reviews are perfect. Honestly if I need a printer I'm going to see if you've reviewed it. If not. I'll choose one you have.
Ive seen like 8 reviews of this machine but now after seeing Aurora brilliant review im gunna make the plunge! She really is the best reviewer, keeping her exact same tests for so long to always be able to compare
88 year old camera!
It is really nice that you have included a few seconds of extra content that is not related to this review, but really interesting :)
When it comes to reviews, your TH-cam channel is the best.
Keep it going!
that camera may deserve it's own episode ...
@@skaltura Yes please.
I like that sovol choose to continue with open source philosophy instead with a closed printer like the K1
They are the only one that understand that people don't want custom user interface and cloud that break klipper upgrades.
@@eaman11 It makes it very hard for customer support to handle multiple versions of Klipper, they may regret this decision.
@@petercallison5765 Why? Doesn't the other manufacturers update their firmware? They just tell ya to update to the latest one.
This is the review I’ve been waiting for, thank you
Me too, since I already bought it. At $449. But I'm happy she liked it.
Sovol is really becoming the best bang for your buck brand!
Bambu is reliable, I’m waiting for SV08 long-term reviews before I invest my money into a company that has let me down before.
@@enhidri160 all of my 06's have never missed a beat. One of them is from the very first early releases and prints CF filaments all the time. Only ever replaced a nozzle. For you the bambu is reliable, for others it been a nightmare. Happens with all machines.
This lady is right up there with Project Farm and the Torque Test Channel. Top tier review with no B.S. Full subscribe/notification.
Wonderful video, Aurora and brother ❤
As a proud voron 2.4 builder and owner I can say this printer is nothing like a voron 2.4, other than the general shape.
A voron is about extensibility (i.e. standard part usage, modularity) and most of all - open source community.
This printer is indeed square - but it’s not a cheaper voron for sure 😊.
That been said, it does look like a valid 3d printer for sure, and as always, again - great content 🎉
I always wait for your review. And as a lover of Sovol this has me SO EXCITED. I really love their history of not just cloning but taking pieces from different printers and putting them in a way that actually works and at a ridiculously low price point usually. So this combined with their announced CoPrint partnership version. I'm so hyped. Can't wait for the community and hopefully sovol to iron out the rough spots. I'm also curious how the quality will come out with the coPrint unit.
Thank you for the best Review of the Sovol SV08 i have seen.
They always have the best ones! 😊
I noticed that the table the printer is sitting on is oscillating during the print. Even though the printer goes through shaping calibration to compensate for resonance, if the system is near it's natural frequencies it can cause ringing in the print finish. A fun experiment is during a print start to add some heavy weights to the table and it will change the ringing pattern in the surface. It will also change as the gantry moves upwards because of the mechanical advantage of the test mass (print head).
The problem is also amplified as the acceleration and velocity of the print head is increased. It increases by the velocity squared and the acceleration cubed.
I cured this problem by putting my printer on the kitchen counter that's essentially immovable. Using flexible pads under the feet of the printer can cause similar problems.
The audio quality of your production has improved.
Great review as usual.
At one point, the table was moving so much, my brain tried to convince me that was a bed-slinger. I really think a couple of those tests need to be re-done with the printer sitting on a more stable surface, like the floor? Especially the Alpaca and wastebasket prints.
Thanks - I’ve been waiting to see your review of the Sovol SV-08!
You know what I can't figure out... why this channel has so few subscribers.
It hands down is the most useful channel/website when attempting to discover what printer to buy and keep up on advances made by new machines.
Congratulations on another excellent review video, as your Sovol SV08 review was the one I was waiting for. One thing that would make this very good machine truly exceptional would be if they added an option for a chamber heater as well as the optional enclosure. I am very surprised that Qidi Tech is still the only company making consumer-level priced printers with chamber heaters. It will be interesting to see if users of this printer install their own chamber heaters, and it will be interesting to see how well a chamber heater will work with this machine.
There is an enclosure, metal side and back panels, clear front and top. Hinged front doors.
It is such a great service to point-out all of the small things that become headaches when getting a new machine set up. Thank-you. The companies have to respond by fixing these details.
I was hoping you'd slow the print speed of the Robo Alpaca to be comparable to the speed of other core XY printers so a print quality comparison could be made at the same print speed... and you did! I love these great reviews!
I would also like to see the Prusa sped up to match the SV08.
@AuroraTechReview Your channel is truly top-notch when it comes to 3D printer reviews. The quality of your videos is outstanding, providing accurate and trustworthy information that is immensely helpful for anyone researching printers. You are my go-to source for honest, unbiased assessments that cut through the hype.
What sets you apart is how you go beyond just covering the core product specs. Your reviews dive deep into real-world usage, highlighting potential issues and headaches that manufacturers should address. You also suggest complementary upgrades and modifications to enhance the user experience. This comprehensive approach provides incredible value.
The review formula you've honed is absolutely perfect. Maintaining consistent testing methodologies across printers allows for reliable cross-product comparisons. I appreciate that you've stuck to this formula across all your videos - it's a big reason why your channel is so revered.
In fact, I wish all reviewers for any product category would adopt a similarly thorough, standardized approach. It's hard to suggest any improvements to your videos because the effort and care you put into them is exemplary.
Your channel has solidified its position as the premier destination for 3D printer reviews that enthusiasts can trust implicitly. The accuracy and depth of information you provide is unmatched. I highly appreciate the phenomenal work you do to educate and guide the community. Keep up the fantastic reviews!
I recommend your reviews all the time. The formula you use in doing your reviews is perfect and very professional. I wish to commend you on your accuracy and consistency within this product space. Thanks for the continued reviews as they directly affect future purchases I make.
WOW!!! Thanks Aurora. Great video as always. And, I just purchased one, all because of YOU 😃
Most reliable reviews going. Thanks.
Wonderful review, as always. Thank you!
I always enjoy your content, you and your brother do an excellent job producing these videos. Also, I'm more excited for my SV08 to arrive now after watching your video.
This is by far the most thorough and objective review of this printer I've seen yet. Good job.
Also - cool camera!
My first video I've ever seen of your channel. Amazing job. You guys are 100% the most professional and straightforward reviewers I have come across. Thank you. I'm looking for my first EVER printer to buy and it's hard to pick one when there are so many out there. I know to stay away from creailty.
Every brand has its haters, the Ender 3 V3 SE is the best value budget printer easily.
Thank you for such a clear and competent review - nothing superfluous, I subscribed! : )
Thanks, useful review, quick and to the point.
Thank you for your completely honest and real review, keep doing what you do. Thanks again so much!!
Excellent review: clear and precise and to the point. 10/10 performance!
Great review as usual!
Much appreciated. I was a bit skeptical of SOVOL08 but your review has me re-thinking things about it. I've been considering Bambu however SV08 is looking like a good option.
Me too p1p or this, think im gunna go for this as i adore klipper
Bambu is a lot more reliable, P1P is good but P1S is worth the money for the enclosure
@@enhidri160 it is also closed and boring.
U get a bambu if you want no hassle and no tinkering.
I do not own a single Apple product. This is why i may not get a Bambu
@enhidri160 how it is more reliable? This is a new machine not much usage.
@@enhidri160 Depends on how you look at it. Running a print farm I would go with the SV08 all day long. Most the parts are off the shelf or can be printed and replaced. Something goes majorly wrong with a bambu and its a waiting game and hopefully its a part you can replace easily. Along with klipper and a flying gantry that can be programmed to sequentially print, in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing this a superior machine. I hope.
Great review as always. Waiting for the FLsun S1 still but now also for the MaterialSystem for the SVO8.
I didn't place an order for the SV08 on launch day because there were no reviews out there from anyone I trusted. Thanks for this - I'm now more likely to add a couple to my fleet.😀
Another great review!
I bought one when it was released, I was concerned that I gamble and lost. Now I really look forward to finally receiving it.
I love you I love you I love you... I am happy with this review this is perfect for what I want to do and I am definitely getting this. I AND as you mentioned I can tweek it to make it perfect for my application. Thank you. Your work is awesome.
thanks for the great review.
Thanks for this review. I bought one at early bird and I think its a good machine. Just need some optimisation in the config.
Yesss, a new Aurora review!
This will be my next printer for sure!
This was a great review, at RMRRF this year I seen a couple different multi color options for this printer (not yet released) Im so excited for what will come of this!
Outstanding review as normal.........😊
Really good results for this instable table under the printer :D
What Sovol had done here, if you can step back and appreciate it, it LEAP forward from the "small improvement" mindset to looking at what the best printer you can get is, and then producing it with very little loss of quality and delivering it at a reasonable price and open source to ensure plenty of user mods. They Unbambu'ed the industry. Creality copied the X1C, (sort of) Sovol said "nah, if we are going to copy, what is the best printer I can get?" then copied THAT. It will force the other players to follow suit. Bambu promised and end to bed slingers, Sovol is moving toward that and dragging all the also rans with it.
I have an SV08 coming and thank you for your video...I bet some of the issues will be addressed before the consumer units start shipping
Pretty insane offering, hands down.
excelent review, thanks!
She could at least rank the existing prints in order.
@@petercallison5765 well, there are some ways for improvement, but I stand by my overall 10/10 for the reviews, many important points get discussed,
and only facts and no useless nonsense.
Another fine video and review. This is an excellent machine and I hope that Sovol fixes the small issues iteratively improves it. Is there enclosrue options available?
Question - I note that your table holding the machine bounced or vibrated significantly during printing. Is this causing any ringing issues?
Hi to you both, wonderful review as usual. I'm a long-term follour of your channel and respect your synopsis.
What I would like to see now is a foll up review to see if improvement has been released to the software/firmware that would corect the issues you experienced. I would also like to see how you setups the BTT PAD7. Thank you again for aĺl your helpovar the year.
Regards. Mike
Great review. Sovol's are such a mixed bag to me. Their low price is attractive to new users but these printers are NOT designed for them. Instead they're really for advanced users that know how to work around the inbuilt in flaws of these cheaper products. What keeps me from buying more for Sovol is that they use a lot of proprietary parts now which runs counter for the needs of advance users to fix part flaws.
Exactly. The idea that a proprietary printer full of proprietary parts is a "voron" is quite an accomplishment for Sovol...
Great review as usual! Sovol was smart to start with a known and proven platform combined with features from other printers. The real question is if the gap in price between Bambu class printers needing little or no out of box tweaks or Sovol class where some time and attention will get you to a great printer can be justified for a given print volume. I'm saving my money to buy the replacement for my beloved dialed-in heavily modded CR-10 300mm x 300mm where my reasons to upgrade would be print speed and bed size. The SV08 is tempting.
Iconic Today 😀
Excellent video!
After watching this review I ordered the SV08, two months ago I ordered the parts to build a VZBOT 330 but Aliexpress lost the order before it shipped and kept my money, Mellow 3D can't get paid from Aliexpress and is also screwed. Thanks for the great review, it was amazing to see you surprised by this printer's performance.
The tolerance test work because they underextruded everywhere, you can see it on the top surface. It's an easy way to win tolerance tests, but it's not good practice: less strength.
Since extrusion multiplier is a material parameter and not a printer parameter, maybe it would be better to tune it before doing any further print, of any kind, so that comparisons are fairer.
Great review , one thing you missed is the size! The desk space needed for this is quiet prohibitive for those of us already cramming in printers
Theres always room for more printers Mark , Couches can be removed, plenty of room in the bathroom, Dog house can hold one etc. 😂
Nice video, thanks :)
Amazing review, very into depth!
Really exciting machine, I would have got one if it wasn't for the proprietary hotend.
I also think the fact that they don't use aluminum extrusion is a bit of a letdown as well, 2020 (or any other size) gives you so many mounting options for every mod that you can dream of.
Great machine for its pricepoint and a lot of similarities with the 2.4 but if I speak for myself, I don't think it will compete with building a voron.
Its a different experience (sourcing, building, configuring, tuning and modding)
they are making an adapter for the hotend to be able to use any nozzle.
Young lady you are by far one of the best TH-cam reviewers bar none! Has sovol shown interests in your "cons" list? IE feedback
Excellent review. Do you think more flow rate than this printer can offer is necessary when printing with their 0.6 nozzle? Is it reaching the limit of the speed with 0.4?
They should lower the default speeds/accelerations, increase the default retraction distance slightly, and lower the default z offset slightly. I'm very curious about those minor tweaks enhancing the quality.
Great review still as always! 👏
Where did you or rather what slizer was used Thank you and again fantastic review
It came with OrcaSlicer and the printer profile in the USB drive.
Thank you @@AuroraTech
Some other reviews mentioned the PSU fan running 24/7 is this still a thing. Really dont want to have to turn off the printef when not in use. Thanks for the review.
All of your reviews are incredible! Can you do a review of creality sermon D3 Pro?
Not sure yet, but I will review a few Creality machines in the coming months.
Hello Aurora !! Thanks alot for your videos..
I have a question for you.. I see in your videos you using Lift height (Travel lift) in your prints.. What is the mm that you use?
I'm wondering how this machine does compared to Troodon 2.0 Pro
great review as usaul. do you think it can print TPU well?
13:51 Yes, I printed TPU in the video.
Lost in Tech mentioned that the inductive proximity sensor has an offset by heating the bed which heats the proximity sensor which causes an small error an causes some height offset. Well, he can probably explain better.
I heard that the issue has been fixed
@@thomasrosenow3705where did you hear that
That's always been the case with a proximity sensor though.
I have heard of it but I have 3 printers with sensors I used for couple years and never had that issue yet.
If it happened, I would replace the sensor thinking it's broken.
I'd like to know what the print quality is like at low speeds. The high speeds for test prints and where quality doesn't matter is very appealing, but it would be great if it can also produce very high quality final prints when needed.
Agreed! I'd like to see robo llamas from all of the printers with similar settings.
at the end they showed that they slowed it down 20% and got alot better results :)
@@jamietheaker3287 True, but I'd like to see what it can do at really low speeds. Does the Voron based design and Klipper features produce very high quality results when run at the kind of speeds we're used to from older machines?
@@EcoHamletsUKI think a better test would be all printers at the same speed (say 300mm/s) as that will show the true king Vs the 2 min benchy guy
@@jamietheaker3287 True but she does a lot of testing already. Still a recap on all the fast printers doing that would be great. You could also speed up the slower printers to see if they can match the SV08.
I have used SOVOL printers for a while now and any of the models that use the induction probe have z-offset issues. The solution is to toss it in the trash and put a BLTouch in its place. Both my SV06 and SV07 Plus had near identical issues as this until the probe was swapped out. Since then perfect zoffset with no drift EVER.
My SV06 seems to have a systematic bias in the probe, so that on the left the nozzle was too low, and on the right it was too high. I was able to fix it by manually editing the probed mesh, adding something like [+0.04, +0.02, 0, -0.02, -0.04] to each row. I honed in the offsets by printing small squares, and issuing the mesh edit G-codes from pronterface's terminal.
@@renxulaThat's X-axis twist. The probe is offset from the nozzle in Y so any twist in X translates to a changing Z-offset from left to right. Make sure your Z towers square to the base. You can also install Marlin with Z twist compensation.
@@p39483 Thank you! I hadn't thought about it, but that makes perfect sense. If they had put the probe exactly in line with the nozzle, the twist wouldn't be an issue 🤦♂️ I'll try to straighten the frame, and have a look at the compensation feature now that I know it's a thing. Cheers!
This clearly needs mods to get arround cost cutting. It is amazing value even after that
@karandex what mods would you be thinking?
could you test what speeds will get the best print quality this machine can produce?
I preordered but I am looking for quality and speed...not sure about bamboo since theirs are more expensive and smaller...
Belts in Z axis are the Achile hell of Vorons. it makes inconsistencies in Z level, no matter what you try to make a setup. This one is the same. ballscrews introdue other issues, but they are rigid and give consistent layer heights.
1:07 potential fire on startup.
I just ordered a unit and I am on the fence
If you go back to that time stamp you hear the unit turn on and you see a spark right where the logo is on the head.
As is usual for a Sovol, it looks like something of a project to get it all dialed in. Still, compared to the usual price of a Voron, that's damned tempting.
but the value of the volumetric speed
1) where can I find it I look on the internet not all filaments have it.
2) does it affect the maximum speed at which I can send the printer? If so, how do I calculate it, thanks in advance
SSID is case sensitive in Linux. This is usually what causes issues when adding pi credentials
What an amazing printer. As good as the bambu lab printers.
can you please share the link to the btt screen ? I would love to get one of them
I might pick this one…. Instead of sourcing all my parts. Time vs cosy.
This makes me feel a lot better about getting my early bird order in. At $449 it seemed almost too good to be true.
Anyone heard an update on shipping yet?
@@TylerGotAYTAccount They have said early May since release. I’m sure it will be another week or two.
Can CREALITY’s SONIC PAD be used instead of its TOUCH SCREEN?
Reminds me of Phrozen's Fdm printer offering
Wow nice price. Add a few choice upgrades like remote CPAP fan and new Beacon Touch over time and this looks like a real choice
Those tolerance test results seem sus (not doubting your results, but that's a VERY good result). Could it be a result of the under extrusion that Nero3d had with his? Did you by chance check e-steps? I've seen a lot of manufacturers shipping klipper machines with improperly calibrated e-steps.
Just watched that section again, twice, and I don't see any signs of under extrusion. If anything with the wispy stringing between parts and openings they may be able to drop the flow/EM by .5%.
I suppose you could have an overextrusion test where the cylinders are not meant to fit.
Always a great review. However it should be pointed out that this is in fact, although Voron inspired, is in fact not a Voron. Just like the SV06 is not a Pusa. Keep up the great reviews.
Ugh... Just ordered a 2 printers this month. I'll probably snatch up one of these next year, seems like a good platform to mod
There will be a dozen other printers coming out by then.
@@petercallison5765 more than likely but with size of foot print, being corexy and having such great accuracy is going to be hard to beat for $500
Great review but still preferer the real thing even tho being more expencive the voron 2.4

will the microswiss k1c head interchange with the sv08 ? I want to provide my own volcano nozzles for 0.8 instead of buying one for 30 euros from sovol which isnt even a volcano nozzle
We should be measuring SPL at 1 meter. 👍
if it was volcano I might consider it
Al final que comiste?
👍🏻👍🏻
Nice printer... plz tell me your going to get the k2 and the cfm to review!
Yes, I guess that would be in August.
@AuroraTech more wondering if u will get it in advance. Also, u getting the kobra 3 combo?
I'm pretty sad you don't compare the prints to the one of the Flashforge 5M. If I recall correctly, your complaints about that machine were software related, but the print quality was excellent so it would be nice to see the prints compared to it. Thanks.
Did you really need to make the full first layer test with this exact filament? Now im feeling hungry for lasagne
Are the baby blue parts from a standard Voron build, or are they custom to this printer? I’d want to change them out to a different color.
This uses no standard Voron parts as it is not a Voron. They took the design and made proprietary parts better suited to mass production. No Voron parts or mods fit without significant rework.
I think they are custom to this SV08.
Everything is proprietary. It's simply NOT a Voron. Genius marketing though...
Everything is proprietary. It may roughly look like a Voron, but it isn't.
Bummer.
Should i get another p1s or this ?? Both of them are in my radar since i need to get a new printer
Bambu
@@tjlqk3 i already have a p1s and x1c, i kinda need a bigger bed because the bambu one is quite small, but its really reliable kinda in the middle of getting another p1s but i need a bigger bed 😭
@@jonnysimps well you kinda answered your own question there bud. If you need a bigger bed than a p1s that you already have then why would you buy another lol
@@tjlqk3 am so the things that i make require me to cut them into a couple of different parts , even with the sovol i would still need to cut them up, but i dont really know the reliability of the sovol but i do know the reliability on the bambu, so do i go with the more reliable one or the one with a bigger bed that i dont know the reliability, thats my dilemma
Please consider that some magnets loose magnetism already above 80° Celsius. To have any magnet on a bed is not always possible. (I just wanted to say that in general and depending the idea changing the magnets.)
Lots of VFA's and ringing on that bin.
Just out of curiosity, how long does it take for you to complete one printer review on average?
About 1-2 weeks per machine.
I cant wait till mine gets in
im also looking forward to seeing what the community can do with this, and how much from the 2.4 will transfer over to it like the troodon.
Very little will be compatible with Voron upgrades. It's a proprietary printer full of proprietary parts.
@chrismay2298 looking at the images of the belt path and toolhead removed I'm sure it won't take long for adapters for Stealthburner and XOL. I wouldn't underestimate the community
