  • In this video, I talk about the Sovol SV08. Brought to you by PCBWay. Register at jle.vi/pcbway and get a $5 welcome bonus!
    THIS is the all-new Sovol SV08... (jle.vi/sv08 - it's only $499 for the first 800 buyers!)
    Basically, it's a 350x350mm, professionally-manufactured remix of the popular Voron 2.4...
    Except it takes less than an hour to assemble.
    And it costs a fraction of the price.
    And in THIS video, we're going to check it out, see how it's different, and ask the question...
    Now that this thing exists... Does it still make sense to build a Voron - specifically, the Voron 2.4??
    Please note: This is a Sovol SV08 Review, but because I was allowed to be the first to publish any content on the Sovol SV08, it's not as thorough of a review as I normally do.

    Every introductory user of this printer has had various problems with wiring, found problems with insulation, LEDs, camera quality, etc. It's early to tell but a lot of what is said in this video is extremely dramatized. Making big points out of trivial feature differences is just a distraction. The design of the SV08 is so different from the Voron that very few of the improvements that have been made for the Vorons will fit the SV08. So it is not something that you can use to benefit from the Voron experience. The use of primarily steel in the frame (not aluminum as was stated) saves money but it is very thin and easy to damage and difficult to repair or modify, the aluminum frames of the Vorons are much tougher and more suitable for upgrades. When a new Voron upgrade comes out there is a path to upgrade your own printer, which Prusa is also famous for providing. This is not the case for other vendors, they expect you to buy another printer every year or so (just like the auto manufacturers) so they don't worry about upgrade paths supported from the designer / manufacturer. The cost off the SV08 is about equal to a low end Voron kit after they get beyond the low initial beta user pricing, but a very high quality Voron kit is only about double the price of the SV08. One strong feature of the Vorons is the availability of maintenance and upgrade parts from a large array of vendors. A printer without a ready supply of spare parts is hardly something one can depend on. Making a printer full of proprietary parts means a large distribution network is needed to make parts readily available, and if the manufacturer goes away or stops providing parts for a model it becomes much more difficult to support and will likely be retired long before a Prusa or Voron model. So the higher initial cost may be repaid several times over the longer life of the machine. This is another area where Voron and Prusa shine. Why does this unboxing and early walk through sound like a Bambu ad? This channel was interesting early on but has degraded tremendously since those days. Now it sounds more like an over-hyped advertisement sequence. As another commenter mentioned, it might be more useful to compare the SV08 to the pre-assembled Voron clones. This really isn't in direct competition with Vorons market. Those pushing for the Bambu and Sovol type machines are really supporting the buy and discard philosophy that fills our dumps with tossed products only a few years old, whereas the Voron and Prusa philosophy is more of a long term minimizing trash and maximizing re-use of the machine resources with reparability and upgradeability. Are you buying for the long haul or the short term??

    • @tstrrtstrr745
      @tstrrtstrr745 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What's wrong with the lead screws? Gantry of the Voron 2.4 is 30% heavier than Trident, giving the Trident (with lead screws) a speed advantage (as in max acceleration in input shaping). Also the bed on the bottom makes it harder to heat the chamber than the Trident with the bed on top where the hot air goes. Better for printing ASA, ABS, Nylon etc., it doesn't take ages to reach 45C+ chamber temp where the print is.
      I have both a Voron 2.4 and a Voron Trident and I think the Trident (with lead screws) is the overall better design. Don't get me wrong, the 2.4 / SV08 style is great, but all in all I prefer the Trident.

    • @madbotanist3605
      @madbotanist3605 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @tstrrtstrr745 Lead screws are less accurate, and are generally replaced by ballscrews with more modern CNC machines. Belted Z is another option for machines that bear less of a load, no concerns of backlash with belted Z, and less weight. Those are 2 different printers you are comparing, lead screws are not the deciding factor for gantry weight. There are belted Z mods for the trident, although I think they mount the motors on the top, I'd install them on the bottom.

    Hold up there, the LDO kit for the 2.4 R2 does come with handles, though they are on the top. Also you CAN grab from the skirts, as the honey comb pattern does let you grab the lower Extrusion on the side. I move my 2.4 a fair bit and use one handle in one hand and one on below on the extrusion to grab the printer. Just have to be careful of the screen, or carry it from the back.
    Building the Voron and choosing your own color scheme is like doing RGB for your ultra gaming PC. Not entirely necessary, but also very enjoyable to make the choices. I have a Red 2.4 and went with Red and Grey for my colors, and I might change those colors later too. It took a while to get my 2.4 to be tuned, and right now its printing beautifully, to where I don't really want to mess with anymore settings LOL.
    Also you don't need the scrubber for the nozzle if you don't heat the nozzle first before doing QGL. I have TAP on my 2.4, meaning the nozzle drip is annoying and messes with the QGL and Meshing. As such I have changed the Print Start in Orca Slicer to run G32 after it heats the bed, but before it heats the nozzle. I then removed the G32 command from the Print Start section of the Printer.cfg file since I have Orca calling for it instead. Now my printer will Heat the bed, Home, QGL, Home again and then heat the nozzle. During all of this, the bed is heat soaking longer then before. Also heating the nozzle doesn't take that long anyways and once it gets to temp, it starts to do the print.
    The new Path is the 350mm build volume, 220 or 250's have been showing their limitations for years and going to at LEAST a 300mm build volume, your just going to compete against every other printer out there. Look at the Prusa XL, while it is a large build volume, its stupidly overpriced to the point where the 2.4 350 IS THE CHEAPER OPTION LOL.
    Also since it is a 2.4 that is pre built for you and uses all the same stuff, and ERCF will work just fine on that SV08

      "does come with handles" ... which you also could print by yourself?!
      "grab from the skirts, as the honey comb pattern does let you grab the lower Extrusion" ... Which you could also change with a large 3D printer at hand.
      Just because this does come prebuild, doesn't mean you cannot mod it the way you want! After all this is going to be a "Voron light" ... the cheapest entry point to that class. And since all files should be available ... you can change the whole printer the way you want.

      The 2.4 is a very heavy machine, and its all due to that large build plate. The LDO kit comes with a much thicker plate then normal, and thus is a lot heavier too. Took some time to figure out how to carry the damn thing around. Since during the Train Show season, I am moving it about once a month or so as I take it with me to train shows. Its real popular with the kids and other people seeing a 3d printer in action. The 2.4 is great for that with the chamber lighting and all enclosed so you can see what is going on.

    Great price for a decent looking printer. With that being said, the Z offset issue is an absolute deal breaker for me and it's the main reason I got rid of my older printers for an X1C. The "just works" aspect is crucial.
    Nobody wants to spend more time debugging print issues than actually printing and one of the most common reasons for that is first layer problems, often as a direct result of Z offset issues.

    • @phasesecuritytechnology6573

I'd didn't know it for months though . Kept ruining petg prints and so was everyone else. Enter OrcaSlicer. I adjusted z offset from the slicer in my printer profile and viola, no more failed prints getting tossed around by the nozzle.

      Since this is going to ba an open source printer, it's not comparable to Bambu Lab because the user does not need the support of the company to fix things.
      And since this costs like 2/5 of the price of that X1C (varying to country) and because of the huge community that kinda does the "debugging" for you (if it's not even already fixed due to the Voron 2.4 knowledge), it's fully depending on your understanding of the value of your time.
      For me ... one hour or two invested in fine tuning is worth more than 900 bucks ... especially if you count in that knowledge gain!
      Because one thing should be clear: A Voron (or "Voron light" in that case) is NOT "just a tool" like Bambu Lab machines wants to be!
      It's the definition of a 3D printing hobby. And many people are glad to learn a thing or two and discover their new "toys" in a way you simply cannot with a closed source ready to print machine.

    • @atvking535
      @atvking535 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@hassosigbjoernson5738 I think there was a misunderstanding. Spending and hour or two to fine tune a printer is more than acceptable. What's unacceptable is having to tune and debug before every. single. print. It's obviously not an issue everyone has but it's one I encountered on my heavily upgraded Ender (running Klipper) and I know I'm not the only one who's had that problem.
      Printing as a hobby is great and learning how and why things work and how to tweak and tune settings is something everyone should do. But when it starts to detract from the fun of printing and becomes more of a labour than enjoyment, that's a problem.
      I'm not saying this printer will have those issues, but I sure like that my X1C doesn't and has been 100% click print and walk away since I bought it over a year and a half (and 700 print hours) ago. The only thing I ever do is clean the print bed and carbon rods occasionally.

      I'll put money on it that this will be an ongoing issue for this printer. Look at the issues the Creality K1 Max has with its 300mm tin foil bed.
      Vorons use a thick bed that has been treated so it has almost warping even at 110c.

A lot of people are saying the print bed is probably thin and flimsy, so it could be that it warps significantly when heated. Or maybe it's related to the Z probe issue? aside that, i doubt it's easy to add a carbon filter or nevermore filter with activated coal as example, or to print replacement parts, so for half the price of a 250x250 2.4 r2 i'd consider still looking at voron, because ASA is actually a pretty neato material to print with from personal experience

Flow rate doesn't mean anything if larger melt zones create triple the friction due to surface area inside the nozzle. None have done the math what is actually going on inside of a high flow nozzle.....and it shows! Does anyone even know what good print quality looks like anymore? Yes we all print faster, but quality and accuracy of high flow nozzles is garbage. Especially on smaller prints with details! It is almost impossible to tune linear advance/retraction in high flow nozzles for a multiple filament brands.

I had my Voron V0 up and running within minutes of finalizing the wiring because someone had a config file for my exact setup. But these files don't always exist because every setup is different and people are hesitant to share config since they can cause trouble if used improperly.
    My 2.4 came with a filament runout sensor. As did my V0. Most of the kits come with upgrades and such already made for you. I do wish the Voron team would upgrade things faster but comparing the work of volunteers to a company specializing in making 3D printers is both unfair.. And clickbaity.
    I had a Sovol SV06+ and it printed great. Zero issues with it other than extremely weak cooling and proprietary nozzles. I donated it to my father. Then I built a 350mm V2.4
    Why? Because I wanted a printer that was "mine". And now it's up and running and prints great.

Should be able to easily edit the cfg to up it to 110C. I don't think we've seen the underside of the bed but you can add a ring of RTV gasket silicone to be extra safe and push the temps a bit further no problem.

      IMO, if you don't have time to build a Voron, you probably don't have time to maintain and fix it, either. I've spent more time fixing my 2 Vorons than I spent building them, and they're like a year old and were LDO kits.
      At the time, they were the go-to for speed and quality, but now I've ordered a Bambu. It'll be printing the parts to fix/upgrade my Vorons, among other things. My Vorons are for hobby tinkering, and the Bambu will be mainly for getting things fixed. (And multi-color prints.)
      I'm very excited to see more Voron things come out, like better probes (Klicky let me down, and Tap isn't *quite* good enough to be standard yet, IMO, though I use it) and MMUs (ERCF V2 is getting there!) and such. Better part cooling on the toolhead is my #1 complaint at the moment, and I'd like to see things like filament cutters and flow sensors standard, like the A1.

    I'm definitely intrigued by a lower cost, easier to setup Voron, but this does sound like a lot of caveats.
    Like I'm all for adjusting print settings, but sounds like this would ALSO require some updates to the Klipper they are running if there are Z offset or clogging (overpressure) issues. Also doesn't sound like it's completely plug and play. The nozzle is also a huge turnoff, since that is one of those aspects that can literally kill a printer. I guess if it's still "open-source" we could just replace the hot end entirely with a standard Voron setup?

    Press fit a threaded steel sleeve in the round Ceramic heater. That seems like an accomplishable design.

    the printer is just perfect for me. I've already tried to build a ratrig vcore 3 but failed because of the framework. I just couldn't get it square. I've probably rebuilt it 10 times but never managed to get it to be square. I then gave up and resold the kit for less money. I then built another printer called “the 100” and was thrilled. The assembly went well because the frame was practically rectangular because it was completely 3D printed. now I want a printer that is big and has a lot of potential like a voron. but I'm afraid of spending over 1000 euros again and then failing again because of the frame. But with the printer I have everything I need, just that I can't mess up the setup. I will most likely get it

    This printer nows sits 3rd on my list
    1) LNL Tenlog D3 pro, a IDEX 300x300x350 at $500, best bang for buck, although missing some of the recent flashy upgrades as mentioned in this video
    2) bamboo lab
    3) this one
    Personally I would love to see a proper review of the LNL tenlog

    Well the SV07 is not fully opensource yet. I had to ditch their klipperscreen for a raspberry pi and touchscreen so I can update klipper. And even if you manage to update klipper without bricking it, it’s quite the hassle. To bad that Sovol has not yet made the SV07 fully opensource, it’s the reason I bought it (I still suck at cad design tho haha)

    Great to see this review, its a good example of what happens when a review is biased. None of the bad points of this printer(there are many) get mentioned, such a shame to see a youtuber sell out to a company like this.

    • @thenextlayer
      @thenextlayer  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the feedback, but I don’t think you’re being particularly fair or factual. Not only did I state my bias in disclosures at the beginning, saying that I’d do my best to overcome them anyways), but I also told you guys that my selection as being the first to release a video meant I couldn’t be as thorough as I wanted to be on this machine, and it was more of a first look than a comprehensive review. Nonetheless, I re-recorded parts of the video to add in issues as they came up. I didn’t have and haven’t had issues that some others have had, but I did point out the Z drift issues, nozzle clog issues, and the fact that the profiles need tweaking. Repeatedly.
      So yeah - I’m the first to accept feedback, but your comment simply isn’t in line with the facts. Disappointing.
