  • Todd Graf & Justin Zarr sit down with PJ Reilly from LancasterArchery.com as well as Scott & Angie Denny from Table Mountain Outfitters to discuss broadheads. They explain the differences between fixed blades and mechanicals along with their personal experiences and feelings on which type of broadhead works the best. They also discuss shot placement, understanding the anatomy of the animals you're hunting, and several other tips for helping you be more successful this fall.
    As professional outfitters who guide dozens of archery elk hunters each fall, Scott and Angie weigh in on what they think about using mechanical broadheads for hunting elk. You may not believe what they say!
    If you're in the market for new broadheads, make sure you check out LancasterArchery.com and be sure to tell them we sent you!
    If you want to go on a high-quality Western hunt for antelope, mule deer or elk, give Scott and Angie a call. You won't be disappointed! 307-632-6352 or visit tablemountainoutfitters.com

      Lol true! They are exactly why I just ordered all new arrows and set-up to get my total arrow weight right around 605ish grains- Axis 5mm arrows with .300spine at 28 7/8" and bare shaft tuned (match grade), 120grain brass insert, 125gr fixed broadhead (tips that fly nice and straight and cooperate with me and my bow), Max hunter 2.1" fletching X3, and a lumenock. I know its no 750 or something but hey, I was shooting a total of 425 before....and now I'm actually shooting much straighter, more consistent, and definitely deadlier. I've been glad to see the awareness, especially since I was once lost haha

      Allen r I have been bow hunting all my life used an assortment of equipment. And it all works if it’s matched to your bow setup. I have bee shooting mechanical for the last 4 years and have had great results. I killed 4 deer last season all complete pass throughs. Two through both front shoulders, one of those two was a 150in 11 point that weighed well over 200 pounds. If you bowhunt long enough you will have issues regardless of the equipment you choose. No broadhead leaves a worse blood trail than a narrow two blade cut on contact.

    The reason that when you shoot it behind the shoulder in the 12 ring and your arrow ends up in the liver, is that the steep angle on the broadhead is causing deflection. The changing of direction. A long cut on contact broadhead will take a straighter path through the animal. Keep track of what broadhead was used when you see that happen and report back.

  • @trevorlawson1714
    @trevorlawson1714 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Obviously a biased discussion favoring the mechanicals. A fixed blade head is by far a better mechanical tool than a mechanical. Mechanical broadheads take more energy and penetrate less than a fixed style head. Saying absolutely no broadhead is getting through a shoulder is false, single bevels or other heads do it all the time. Tune your bow and arrow setup, high FOC, and 550gr+ you will be more successful.

      @Trevor Lawson the bow hunting dot com guys are sponsored by mechanical heads so they will always be biased to them. I’m sure they know Nap makes junk non reusable heads but they give them a paycheck every month, so I can’t blame them. @@00_ELECTRICWIZARD_00 It's true that we're partnered with NAP, but they also make some of the nastiest fixed blade heads (Hellrazor, Thunderhead Nitro) which we use all the time! The only reason you think we're "biased" towards them is because most of the guys on our team prefer mechanical. That's it! I've Spoken to Mr. Sohm several times and told him why I like the Serazor (serrated Black Hornet) so much. And why I don't like the Buzzcuts as much. The Buzzcuts simply do not hold up as well as the cousins the Stinger because the serrated edges of the buzzcuts are weaker and will break onimpact with hard bone. But not the serrated Black Hornets,

    I hunted with Scott and Angie last year. I had a fixed blade and a rage mechanical tuned to >75 yards. Scott encouraged me to shoot the Rage (trust your guide). At the end of the day I shot my first mule deer and my first antelope. I practiced over 92 yards a lot (no further...due to clearance issues), but told them I was ready for 45 yards. They watched me shoot before the hunt. I questioned both of my shots, but I recovered both animals under 100 yards. I will always love Scott and Angie. They run an awesome outfit. They listened to my comfort level, watched me shoot, and considered my gear. I trusted Scott, and I made two really long (for me) shots with short tracking jobs. Both of those animals are on my wall today.

    I used to shoot fixed blade broad heads when i was younger and when Rage came out with two blade i switched and seen terrible results with penetration with rage broad heads, two years ago i shot a 6 point in PA public land at 13 yards, 70 lb bow with 400 spline gold tip and 100 grain rage two blade, hit him behind front shoulder and a little hit, only thing there was ribs, couldnt have hit any other bone and only got 6 to 8 inches of penetration, found him, only went 60 yards, but that arrow should of been buried in the ground. so i am changing to heavier arrow with fixed blade heads.

    I prefer fixed all day, but the big problem with any broadhead is FOC. The issue most hunters have is that they buy an over the counter arrow with feather weighted inserts and mechanical Broadheads that they don't have to tune. If you get heavier inserts, Better FOC, and tune the arrows from insert to nock, it matters much less which you choose. (Until you hit spine 😉)

  • @natecarter5
    @natecarter5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Just my thoughts on the topic. I actually consider it unethical to shoot anything but a fixed blade head at animals. I’ve shot a simple Magnus stinger 2 blade fixed head out of a 50 lb recurve for years and gotten nearly all complete pass throughs on deer. Friends use mechanicals out of 70lb compounds and routinely don’t get pass throughs. This is just ridiculous. If people would just shot a slightly heavier arrow for hunting (450-550 grains) and a fixed head there would be a lot less wounded deer every year.

    • @natecarter5
      @natecarter5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The united blood trackers group routinely track deer with dogs that hunters are unable to recover. The number one factor that increases the recovery rate is if the arrow passes through the deer. The chances of this occurring are drastically improved with the use of a fixed blade broadhead and ‘heavier’ arrow (450-550 grains). I have never shot mechanical broadheads, but have no trouble following the blood trail. Deer typically run around 40 yards at the most.

      I keep a Magnus stinger a Magnus black hornet ser-razor one in 100 grain and one in 125 for a close shot or if I'm going through something like a bigger deer a small game head which I used to used one of the original ramcats for and a two inch cutting diameter mechanical. I've never used a mechanical broadhead on anything yet but I may on a turkey. But if I have a deer in front of me I'm going to be pulling out the black hornet buzzcut or the stinger. Paper tune with fletch, shoot bare shaft and adjust the sight so fletch field point hit the same place. Shoot anything you want as long as they weigh the same. Don't forget a nock is 8 grains, a lighted is around 20 grains. If you practice with plain nocks, add enough 14 gauge house wire epoxied inside and straight to match the weight so when you change nocks your good.

Read the 12 factors that influence penetration and then create your arrow set up. I’m at 587Gr. The fifteen years of data has accounted for clean kills on multitudes of Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Elk, Wild Hogs, Nilgai, over 1800 Cape and Asiatic Buffalo, nearly one hundred Elephant, multiple Hippo, and countless other large game across North America, Africa, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, making the Ashby Bowhunting Foundation the leading global authority on arrow and broadhead lethality. Lots of video out there of mechanicals not penetrating much. Wonder how much that is due to them being attached to a 390gn arrow? Hmmmm? Problem is, the same guy that chooses mechanicals wants "field tip accuracy" without a well tuned set up and is also scared to shoot a heavier arrow because he is afraid of slower speed and the associated arrow trajectory. On the other hand, the guy who wants the heavier arrow knows the loss in speed is not a big deal and is also taking the time to get a decent tune and has no trouble getting fixed blades to fly well.

I choose the large cut and personally dont have any penetration issues. . However i dont like mech that are over the top deploy because of penetration. I believe that the rear deploying are better and have a less chance of deflection. I have takin animals at long and short range and shot placement is most important over all other things in my opinion. Shoot whatever you like the best and whatever makes you feel good about your set up. Keep politics out of hunting its already ruining our world. Good luck in sept Everyone or august if your a speed goat chaser.

    I get the argument for both broadheads. Personally I have a shorter draw length and a bow that is not a "speed" bow. I wouldn't choose anything but a quality fixed blade with my set up but these things differ from person to person. If you have plenty of speed/energy output a mechanical is a great choice for some people. Less things to go wrong with a fixed blade but greater chance of better blood trail/quick kill with a bigger mechanical. This debate will last as long as bow hunting will 😂😂

    If you miss back you’re screwed, if you hit the shoulder you can still get lung. The avoidance of bone contact is hilarious. Number one shot placement number two penetration, simple! Notice pj’s explanation was simple and the mechanical peddlers read us a book. The mechanical peddlers make it sound like penetration is a bad thing.

    A sharp fixed blade by far. Not once did you cover hitting forward. stats show that pass though shots ( 2 holes) are super important. Shooting a sharp head is what causes great blood trails

  • @collinmustain1718

    According to United Blood Trackers. Any animal with an exit hole is substancially more likely to be recovered than one without. A 2 inch entry hole is less important than an exit hole. But in the current day and age of bow hunting both quality fixed and mechanical heads can be found and are viable options on even largef game like elk. Though due to drag issues and poor mechanical advantage of the blade angle. I would probably avoid mechanicals on any animal with thick fat. Hogs and bears for example. But the bigger issue that was mentioned but breezed past is poor arrow performance. Super light fast arrows just do not penetrate as well. Especially with low FOC. Lower FOC makes the rear end of the arrow want to leapfrog forward apon impact. Often times you hear people quote Ashby and Ranch Farie. Which I have done as well. But to a point some people are rite. A big heavy high FOC arrow with a 2 blade single bevel may be excessive on deer. But overkill is better than underkill. Some people like a light arrow for flatter trajectory. And I dont have an issue with someone wanting to be morr confident in their shot placement. But I think a light arrow is even more reason to use a small super sharp fixed blade. While guys that are already shooting high FOC heavy arrows that can push a big mechanical out the other side should possibly give mechanicals a good look. Just to clarify. I do shoot heavy high FOC arrows and my quiver this year will have a mix of fixed and mechanicals in it. All tested out to 60 yards.

    Do they realize how much kinetic energy is loss with a mechanical broadhead? It's typically 20%. That's 12 lbs of ke loss on a 60 lb draw. A heavy arrow with a fixed blade broadhead will almost always provide superior penetration.

    Yet they don’t acknowledge the endless tests that prove a solid cut-on-contact with plenty of mass will penetrate way better than a mechanical any day. Secondly, saying a broadhead can’t penetrate the shoulder joint is absolutely ludicrous. Also belittling people “a lot of people are hunting Cape buffalo apparently “. Why not use a Cape buffalo arrow for whitetail, can they be too dead?

    • @bowhuntordie
      @bowhuntordie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting full penetration on a whitetail depends on a lot of different factors. And no, a whitetail can't be "too dead" but they are WAY faster and quicker than a Cape buffalo. You never know how much a whitetail will duck/move on a shot. It's about finding the right mix of heavy to fast when it comes to whitetail hunting.

    You guys laugh about shooting heavy upfront sets, but I'm telling you I'll kill more deer with a single arrow and the same 200gn single bevel upfront with around 16% foc than you will with the next dozen arrows you set up at 350-450 with a mechanical. Durability and reliability don't lie. My groups have never been better out to 50yards with well tuned arrows and heavy upfront. And on the plus side, I will never worry about the shoulder ever again.
    Wish you luck, but I'll agree to disagree with you guys on this one.

    All evidence shows me that mechanical heads have really no advantage. I guess larger blood trails. But, if you use high FOC heavy arrow with an insanely sharp cut on contact fixed blades, the animal doesn't EVER go far.
    The rest of the guys, except PJ, really think that mechanicals are better. That is pretty ludicrous, but they don't know that.

    I don't think its appropriate to just try and "cancel" people out who are pushing for high FOC, bare-shaft tuned straight flying arrows, with reliable and MORE DEADLY FIXED BLADE heads and just say "you dont need to shoot through 5 animals". Obviously. You are just denying objective, factual data - straight up numbers that prove effectiveness. Yes, mechanicals are good for flying straight and can cause serious damage, plus plenty of game harvested. However, the data on penetration and recovery proves that the fixed blades are better - Just don't exaggerate in order to attempt to debase a MORE VALID ARGUMENT. That crap is exactly why our country is falling apart - it is literally how socialism and communism are infecting the free world. Exaggerate in order to make people look out to be stupid or extreme or whatever in order to debase their point of view. That is NOT the American way.

      Bowhunting.com I really appreciate the response. I’ve had very mixed results with mechanicals over the years. Some simply do not open, others become obliterated with any contact with bone. I like the strength and improved penetration of the fixed. Definitely a great debate. One debate that I do not see going away anytime soon. I’ve used a variety and recently switched back to fixed. Keep up the great work! Love your channel!

    All this 'mech vs fixed' garbage is simply another example of the nonsense division in the archery community.
    Quit helping the ANTIs, by fighting amongst yourselves. The community should be tight-knit, supportive of each other, not finding the tiniest thing to bicker and trash each other.
    Use whatever the F you desire. It's YOUR choice, and nobody else's opinion means anything. And it's further fueled by the social media channels using the topic for easy views and monetary gain.
