When tribal people saw that video and the line, the old Babu said: "nobody ever died holding their breath, you will only go sleep, what a horrible thought to be having"
Two young men (like my own kids) turned me on to this group and this song. I didn't care for it (at first) because I wasn't into metal. But as I continued to watch the video, I was mesmerized by the passion they displayed while playing. After that, I was hooked. I'm 71 and still enjoy them.
I binge these type of reacts because I grew up bullied by my own people, whether in the home or school because I am black and listened to metal, rock etc. This truly makes me happy. I feel like a child excited to show her favorite rocks to a stranger. Deeply healing. Thank you!
This song was based off the antiwar movie, "Johnny Got His Gun". The scenes in the video are directly from the movie. One of the best metal songs of all time.
The book came first, set in WWI but written as an anti-war protest piece during WWII. It's one of those "read once, it'll change your life, but never again, because it'll fuck you up" situations. Really sad and disturbing, incredibly powerful.
The song wasn't based on it, the video used the footage from the movie because it had a similar theme to the song. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film.
In case you're wondering... This song still gives me chills and one thing I hate doing is watching myself on camera but every time I click on this video I have to hear the entire song. Genius-level artistry here 🏆Thank you all for your support
I just watched this. If by chance no one has mentioned it yet in the comments, this song is based off the book "Johnny Got His Gun". That's the name of the movie in the background in the video as well.
I grew on hip hop with an older sister that was a metal head. I heard this from her 30 something yrs ago and I’ve always thought this song was perfect.
Juiliard music school helped but let's be honest that without social media distractions people had more time to utilize their natural talent. If they lived today I fear they'd be too busy calling people "nootzies" on tiktok and Twitter for failing to be left of Lenin to ever create beauty musical or otherwise and they sure as hell wouldn't know war is bad... War is just what you do to wrong thinkers apparently or so I was told... I mean isn't beauty and meaning considered too modern and thus repugnant for today and uncool to the kids who will be voting in a year or two? I say this because of the music my nieces asked for for Christmas but my God, I truly fear that musical genius of any import is now dead. Hooray for propaganda killing it wherever it rears it pristine and immaculate head 😞 And if I seem bitter... Then you should have to listen to your nieces music for a dozen hours too. This isn't the same old "it was better in our day" trope... this was diametrically opposed to anything good anywhere, everywhere at all times to everyone I may just buy them Metallica "and justice for all" to spite them. If my sister won't set them straight then I will!!!! Lol
I am 45...and have been listening to Metallica since junior high. This song is what got me hooked. They have some of the most BEAUTIFUL music ever. "Nothing Else Matters," "One," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" are my favorites.
I'm the same age, became totally Met addict at 13. Even though I listen to/play diverse music styles since then, these guys genial music is linked to lot of great memories!
The most fascinating part of the structure of this song is the guitar riff and double bass drum. It was meant to sound like a machine gun. Just masterful composition.
08:15 it was at that exact moment as a teenager, I realised I would be a life long metal head. I had never heard anything so sonically pleasing in my life up to that point. Really blew my mind and I remember that feeling like it happened yesterday.
Mine was megadeth. I had a neighbor that was years older than I was and he would blast this stuff out of his garage. My parents were always complaining about how loud it was. I remember being like 10 years old going up to him to ask about and the next 4 hours was him curating so much music for me to listen for the first time. Miss you Steve, I was just a kid and you showed me my life before I knew it was mine.
I’m 53 and had the pleasure of going through my formative years with these guys. My 18 year old is also a huge fan which translates to their appeal. Check out Fade to Black and my personal favorite Whiplash!!! Incredible songs
Yo POLO, This was the first Metallica song that enjoyed a "tiny" bit of commercial success and airplay. This song was the first "heavy" metal song performed live at the Grammys. I was 12 or 13 at the time and already aware of what the PMRC was trying to do to hard rock and rap, because of this I got the feeling you get when you watch an underdog win the big game. I was so happy for the culture in general. The cutaways are indeed from a movie called JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN. The movie was based of the book by the same name. The storyline of the song is the storyline told in the book and movie. Fun Fact: The movie became much more well known, developing the status of a "cult" film classic. Metallica eventually bought the film rights in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees. Cheers POLO.
A "tiny" bit? Sarcasm? Sorry, hard to tell on the internet sometimes. I'm just a few years older than you, I was 16 when "..And Justice For All" was released. I'd discovered Metallica a couple of years before through a school friend that had moved here from the Bay Area. THIS was Metallica's first music video, and the minute it debuted, EVERYONE knew who they were.
@@deejayturtle come on dude. The way you wrote that made it appear as though you were a master Metallica fan who new all and could spout facts. Dude you cut and pasted or word for word copied 3/4 of your comment. There is no ill will I thought it was funny so called you out a bit. All good bud
No matter how many times I hear the song. It still gives me goosebumps. It chokes me up when he is calling out to his mother. Saying mother please help me I'm having a terrible dream and I can't wake up
I watched Johhny Got His Gun in grade 8 (35 years ago). A few years after that I heard One for the first time and eventually linked the two. Still gives me incredible chills nearly 2 decades later.
You are correct sir. The video clips are from 1971 movie Johnny Get Your Gun. Metallica essentially made this song off that movie. Genius. And you have to watch it multiple times to get the full impact. If you don't tear up at least once, you're dead inside. Best song and video ever. So many layers
The book was banned for fear it would prevent men fighting in war. It took place during the first WW. Before DNA could identify bodies and modern medicine. These men were sent through meat grinders of trenches, artillery, and mechanized war. Tons of munitions are unearthed every spring by Europes farmers from that war over 100 years ago
When Metallica wanted to use Johnny Get Your Gun for the video, they purchased the rights to the movie so that they wouldn't have to pay royalties every time the video aired. Not only great musicians, but smart businessmen as well!
I'm so glad you found out the meaning of this song. So many people don't understand it. It's like Master of Puppets by Metalica. Many don't understand the meaning of the songs. Great reaction.🥰
I always love watching people react to this song. It doesn't get old, even after the hundreds of times that I've listened to it. This song was the reason that I started actually listening to music to begin with, and it will reign as my favorite song of all time until the day I die.
This song was my first Metallica experience when I saw it on MTV as a teenager. Few videos have ever impacted me as much. The definition of living Hell! Nearly thirty years later as a Veteran who has fought in war. I am fortunate not to have had a similar fate.
'hold my breath as I wish for death'! Damn!! Song brings me to tears everytime. God damn wars! So glad you did this song, brother. This is deep, but masterful. 'Dosposable Heroes' won't disappoint. I also hope you dig into gojira and opeth, both live are indescribable!
2nd Disposable Heroes. Yes war is clearly the front end theme, but a lot too is something like "when does science/medicine go to far". He is a product of 'their' profession, as he would be dead and gone and done suffering through just the warrior side of things.
For the longest time I thought he was saying 'hold my breath inside, wish for death' same meaning, but didn't know what he was really saying til I read the lyrics after buying the album in the 80s'
The lyrics are actually hold my breath as I wish for death..Metallica is one of the best out there, probably one of the best live concerts I've ever seen ❤
Metallica at their finest , I am 66 and still headbang to them . Had the pleasure of seeing them perform live .Love to feel the loudness of their music ❤️
I saw them live several times in the early 90’s. When they perform ONE it is intense. It’s like you are in the middle of a combat zone. The bass rattles you to your core. 30 years of listening to them & this song still sends chills down my spine. The line you couldn’t make out is Hetfield singing, “hold my breath as I wish for death.” The reason they are so appealing is their lyrics tell stories while their instruments convey raw emotion. You’ll find many of us that listen to metal also love rap. Another genre of story telling. Lars Ulrich is a master on drums. If you have a chance to see them, go. You won’t regret it.
Yeah man, the majority of metal heads I know, myself included, are also rap heads. The two genres are very much intertwined by a fan base that has the same tastes. And it works both ways too. I’ve introduced so many of my rap head friends to metal and they almost universally get hooked to it. If you love hard music, you love hard music, no matter the genre.
When ever people say metal is just screaming an noise, I always tell them to listen to this song, and pay attention to the lyrics, it’s such a powerful song and with huge meaning.
people ignore the lyrics a lot who don’t like the genre. Some of the most “screaming” bands have important lyrics. Nuclear assault for example. the Lyrics are almost more relevant today than when they wrote them. Metallica and Megadeth always great. Slayer have amazing well written wordy lyrics. DRI-lots of Angry environmentalism.
It’s absolutely beautiful to see and hear someone that did some background on the song featured and give it open range to play and not just jump up and down because it’s a “metal band performance” Metallica has plenty more that should be reviewed by this gentleman
Now listen to this song and think about a veteran with Depression, PTSD or lost a limb to an IED. This song still relates to what veterans today are going through. Like the Vid, cheers
And this is precisely why there's a group of us that check in on other guys we served with just to make sure everybody is heard and knows there's still people that have their backs.
@@hootie6787 hey G. Thanks for your service. Do you guys check up on the peeps you invaded based on intelligence your government gives you? Like there must be some kind of regret, no? @@jcon2060 you talk as though the military gets a say in where they're deployed. However, in the times I was there I did try and make sure people were alright. I doubt there are many who went through it could honestly say that they were there for the greater good but, Iraq is different to Afghanistan. Regret? No. I don't regret it, I don't feel guilty about any of the roles I played because I accepted it and to be honest, I don't honestly care what anybody thinks but acting like the military were doing their jobs. Its down to politicians not listening and denying their own intel. Everybody knew there weren't any WMDs.
Love that look of pure disgust on someone's face the first time they hear these incredible metal riffs. It's the best compliment you can give these artists.
This was there 1st video they ever made and it is a classic, To see this video and to see how young they all are and how they have changed over the years is amazing.
This song is a masterpiece. Instrumental, lyrical, visual, everything. Metallica and whoever directed this video are geniuses. Check out No Leaf Clover next. So glad you did this reaction!
It's surprising how many of the loud, grinding metal songs, that are so dark, can have a very strong "anti-war" message. From Ozzy's "Crazy Train" to Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" and Metallica's "One"
@@pennydaytreasures8173 Interesting, I grew up on the same music and I wouldnt classify myself as anti-war. I'm probably a bit more anti-government, but it's not due to music.
One of the most perfect songs ever .. from the lyrics showing his descent into despair and pain, to the way the drums and guitars act as battle sounds in the background during the crescendo.. absolutely perfect
It sucks that I grew up listening to these guys so I couldn’t have a genuine first reaction but every time I hear those 4 opening note I get goosebumps down my spine, this song is truly they’re last masterpiece since Cliff burton. Rock on boys🤘🏽
This is my favorite Metallica song. It is a masterpiece that will stand the test of time. The song is based on a book “Johnny Got His Gun” written in 1938 by an American author Dalton Trumbo.
This is a hard song, but it is the reality of war. Sometimes preserving life at all costs is not the best decision. Quality of life has to play into this as well. That is a big part of this song. This is one of the few heavy metal songs that made me cry.
It's always nice to see when music that I grew up with reaches a new audience and that new audience can appreciate it for all that it is. A *true* metal masterpiece!💓💓
This song was also my gateway entrance to metal. So many memories with this song and the whole genre when I discovered how much I loved it. Still one of my faves.
I'm 33 this song has been a life long favorite at the end she locks the locking hemostats on his breathing tube and he drifts off into death the guitar portrays so we'll the panic and anxiety he's feeling as he dies. I'm glad you did the official video it gives all that extra dialogue you would've missed out on otherwise.
My friend Dave drove me to the local record store at the time so that we could purchase this record. It was actually 2 records, I at first couldn't understand how they had only 9 songs but needed two records to fit them. I, and basically all my friends were absolutely obsessed over And Justice For All, much like Master of Puppets before. To this day, I get chills from this video and song. Metallica is still my favorite band. It makes me happy to see folks seeing this for the first time all these years later and seeing what we saw. This song is a masterpiece.
this one brought many on board and is still the best. glad you experienced it. my kids did live when they were 7 and 5. 2019 tour open in madison wisconsin. keep the metal content rolling.
I have honestly heard this song so many times and love it.. not until watching you react to it did I actually fully listen to the lyrics and understand what the song is actually about!
The video is so much more impactful if you're already familiar with the song and the lyrics. Then you can appreciate both. The video can be overwhelming if it's your first exposure to ONE.
@@FuckTH-camAndGoogle I watched the OG video, 'we' had a VHS named "2 of 1" of Metallica's, I was aged 15 years old & had no problem understanding this video, I "got" the song/video! I watched it twice with my elder brother & cherish the 80's & finding Metallica back then!
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS is my favorite Metallica song. The riffs and tempo changes so much that it's like 4 different songs in one! And the echoing of his voice makes it feel multidimensional. You HAVE to hear it if you already haven't! 🔥🖤
I think you’re the only worthwhile react channel around. You do a good job of actually breaking down the content, and contributing with your own perception on whatever it is you’re watching. Much respect. Keep it up.
This was my first Metal-CD I bought in 1988 when I was 14. And I bought 4 times more since then, because I wrecked them all from hearing it so much. And still I get goosebumps every time I see the video. "...and justice for all" changed my music taste.
One of the best songs to video ever done. The director/producer nailed the video... Fitting the song nearly perfectly. The thrust...the emotions you feel and hear, from this video/music is absolutely amazing... it has never been repeated or duplicated. Some of the best music was done in the late '80s & '90s.
On one hand, I'm so proud to be a long time fan of Metallica (+30 years) but on the other hand, I'm so envious of you hearing this band for the first time! Great reaction! Metallica are the kings of metal as far as I'm concerned! 🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
Metallica released a VHS way back the day called "Two of One" where the band presents the song and video with full commentary of the inspiration for this song. We watched it so many times! Here at 50 and no longer a "metalhead" but I still listen to this one often enough. A masterpiece yes!
Man heard it a thousand times and still got chills just when you read out the google explanation. Incredible track and if you immerse yourself in it you going to end up either in tears or just silent in utter awe. Incredible track.
He's saying "Hold my breath as I wish for death." I read the book Johnny Got His Gun many years ago then saw the movie. Its one of the best anti war stories out there and Metallica brilliantly brought the feelings in their music! They are amazing musicians!
I listened to this song a ton and used to love it just for the instrumentals. My english wasn't always great so I didn't pick up on the lyrics until way later in life and also saw the video. I already loved it and it blew my mind that the whole meaning had gone over my head haha. You hit it spot on, these rock reactions are awesome man. Much love.
"Hold my breath as I wish for death, oh please God help me!" is the line you're trying to understand. The movie used, which this song was inspired by, is "Johnny Got His Gun". This song was actually Metallica's first foray into making music videos. A pretty interesting way to get into making videos. However, it makes you wonder what kind of videos would have been made for songs like "Master of Puppets" or "Creeping Death". I love the line the priest has, "He's the product of your profession, not mine." Another song that covers what Veterans feel like when coming back from war is Five Finger Death Punch's "Wrong Side of Heaven". That song hits me in the guts more than "One" does.
Metallica hits home to me on so many levels. One of the closest to home is UNTIL IT SLEEPS.......As a victim of child abuse, this song really tugs at my heartstrings.
The song, according to Hetfield, was actually about his mother dying from cancer. She wouldnt accept treatment, because as a hardcore christian she didnt believe in medicine. The “it” in the title is her cancer. The message of the song is basically that he wants to be with her until she dies.
one of the greatest songs and music videos of all time. And their very first music video. The director of this video killed it. The song amd imahes kill it. You have to rewatch it 100 times and catch learn new conmections every time . *masterpiece*
As a guy who grew up in Metallica, Pantera, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, and Nirvana, I can confidently say that the first times one listens, and groks, these bands, one gets scarred. You look back at yourself later, and you find deep, permanent, discoloured grooves in your soul. You don't remember the pain of the growing and FEELING at the time, but, you end up understanding that this music forever altered the landscape of your spirit and mind. I, for one, feel blessed for the exposure and change.
You neeeeeed to watch live versions, from Seattle 1989. No matter which track, this is the best metal concert in history. Also Moscow 1991 will be mindblowing too
Metallica's James Hetfield reveals another layer of personal meaning to the lyrics for One. Must watch. Btw, SO cool watching you blown away by this for the first time.
It's good to see people broaden their horizons.. especially music they're not used to.. reading lyrics opens our eyes and hearts, Thanks for sharing this Masterpiece with others who may have never known it existed my brother!
@@mattsowder7978 That you can say that after listening to this song shows that you don't understand music at all. This is one of the best drum parts ever recorded.
Wow - it would be so cool to hear this song for the first time (again...). Caught this live in '92, these guys put on a hell of a show. Try Leper Messiah, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Disposable Heroes, or for their early, more raw sound Four Horsemen or Whiplash.
A masterpiece. I believe it got “best guitar solo ever”… back in the 90’s. I still get chills the instant I hear the gunfire intro. No matter what I’m doing, this song stops me in my tracks.
I grew up in an abusive household and would lay on my bed with headphones on playing this album or Pantera over and over until falling asleep. Crazy how calming something so in your face could be. Great song
So if you're interested in more stuff from that general era of theirs, one of my favorite tracks is Creeping Death from their Ride the Lightning album, it has less...flair to it, just gets right to the point of what they do best. If you want a classic song from them, one that is one of their best compositions of all time, I suggest Nothing Else Matters, from their self titled (Black) album. It'll hit ya in the feels big time.
Now that you heard the recorded version,... watch a live performance (a more recent one). Metallica's performance quality just went up with the years. I've seen them do this song live. It's amazing. And their fan base,... you see grandparents with their grandchildren at their concerts.
Took all my sons and son-in-law last time they came to Houston.....your right...there were generations there. If nothing else I had to take the boys to see a Metallica concert..my third...Avenged Sevenfold was just a bonus
Another beautiful meaningful song is Welcome Home Sanitarium!! I suggest you react to it from their 1989 Seattle concert or just the studio version. It's an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G track! Inspired by the jack Nicholson movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! James talked about it in an interview many years ago.
This song came out when I was in high school, it was my introduction to Metallica and heavy metal as a whole. I loved it, it was loud, it was fast, it was in your face. Now I'm 50 and a veteran. I spent 5 years of my life in the middle east witnessing first hand the atrocities that people can commit to each other and the result of it all. I can tell you right now, after not hearing this song for probably 30 years, it hits differently. It hits a whole lot deeper now than it did when I was just a kid and it was just loud, fast, and in your face.
When I first saw this video I was with my grandfather who was a WWII vet. To see the tears stream down my grandfather's face let me know that this song had more significance than any other song ever....
What you gotta remember about Metallica and a lot of other thrash bands of their era is that they are a product of their time. These are the children of the Cold War. Where nuclear annihilation was a very real and constant threat. So they, in their early music especially, are totally anti war. This, Blackened, Disposable Heroes etc all have very strong anti war messages. Thrash and a few other metal genres were really the only musicians exploring the horrific consequences of war. Everything on the radio was “let’s party and have a good time” to distract from the dark reality of the times. If you got an anti war song on the radio it was candy coated in symbolism or platitudes. Metallica, on the other hand, wanted to rub peoples noses in the horror of war until they fucking did something about it.
this is 100% correct. and this goes for the thrash metal bands of the 80’s along with the earlier heavy metal bands that were coming out during the late 60’s and early 70’s, like black sabbath. the pioneers of metal had been born in the aftermath of the WWII and were now entering the time of the vietnam war, leading up to the cold war. from what i’ve heard when listening to different bands and songs, metal music has always been pretty anti-war.
Ah, yeah, the Good Old Days. When we sat in class at school and any minute there might be a random bomb drill. Blaring alarm goes off and we all have to jump under our desks. Cause, you know, a school desk will protect you from a bomb.
Metallica was my intro to metal. It's such a broad genre but so well worth putting time into listening. I'd suggest pantera's domination live. Or even some Slayer next.
Nah, Slayer would definitely be too much and I don't believe polo would appreciate that type of metal. I only like a couple of their songs, actually tolerate a couple of their songs. Pantera, yes but maybe start out with 5 minutes alone or cemetery Gates first.
Master of Puppets! That jam will take you through a twisted, dark, euphoric and fu**ed up place that you can't and won't be able to get enough of 🔥🤟💯❤️
@@jamesdconstantine.838 going through addiction right now! I don't know how I went from a professional, upper class citizen to a fiend of my demons. Something happened when my dad died unexpectedly two years ago. I just wanted the pain to go away. I just wanted to erase his memory so the hurt could stop. I figured if I could obliterate myself on the daily, then somehow amnesia would make him go away. But he still haunts me. He is everywhere. He is in my dreams. I can still hear his laugh. As you watch the music video, which person had the most compassion towards the soldier? Do you think it was the doctors that wanted to keep him alive no matter what he has to go through the rest of him life? Do you think it was the military officers that wanted him to live long enough for them to pat him on the back and say ''Good job soldier''? Or was it the nurse that was overhearing everyone in the room being selfish to the point of not even caring about what the soldier wanted as long as they get their way? She actually helped him die so that he wouldn't have to live like a vegetable the rest of his life!
If you really enjoyed this song, I would encourage you to experience the entire album from start to finish. And the song "To live is to Die" on the B side is one of the most moving songs that they ever recorded next to "Orion" which if you have not viewed, please do so with a live version with Cliff Burton (the original Bassist) playing.

The clips in the video come from the movie titled 'Johnny Got His Gun'
I've been listening to this since I was a kid and it still give me chills. Every. Time.

@6:57 "Hold my breath as I wish for death"
This is not just one of the top Metallica songs, it is a masterpiece of music. One of the top song of all genres.
Total agree 🤟🇬🇷
I couldn't agree more
It’s a beautiful emotional masterpiece
Hold my breath asI wish for death. Oh please God help me!!!
It was a movie they made the song about.
the crazy thing is these guys were like 21 years old when they wrote this song.. insane talent.
24-25, but still it’s ridiculous
Hooray for propaganda killing it wherever it rears it pristine and immaculate head 😞
And if I seem bitter...
Then you should have to listen to your nieces music for a dozen hours too.
This isn't the same old "it was better in our day" trope... this was diametrically opposed to anything good anywhere, everywhere at all times to everyone
I may just buy them Metallica "and justice for all" to spite them.
Same here. Went to my 1st concert of theirs in 89 when I was in 7th grade
I'm the same age, became totally Met addict at 13.
Even though I listen to/play diverse music styles since then, these guys genial music is linked to lot of great memories!
Thankyou ms. Griffin!!😙us too
Same age and same exact feeling!
Did they play Enter Sandman at High school football games as the players came out. I walked out four years straight to it in the mid 90's.
This song is a masterpiece. That middle section is one of the best bits in Metal ever recorded.
yeah, I've heard it hundreds of times and it still gets my head banging.
That outro has also been goated
Best band 2 come out of the states
Masterpiece. Yes.
Absolutely a true masterpiece indeed!💯💯💯
The most fascinating part of the structure of this song is the guitar riff and double bass drum. It was meant to sound like a machine gun. Just masterful composition.
08:15 it was at that exact moment as a teenager, I realised I would be a life long metal head. I had never heard anything so sonically pleasing in my life up to that point. Really blew my mind and I remember that feeling like it happened yesterday.
Same here except im still 19
Same here except I'm 25
You're damn right!!!
Same here. I think I was 12. I went from Nirvana to this and never looked back.
@@Bryan-T lol I went from Pennywise (punk) To Metallica, then quickly to Slayer..

That’s a great song also !!!
I've never been able to like Jethro Tull due to what happened at the Grammy's when ...And Justice For All was nominated.

"Johnny Got His Gun". 😊
The book is even more graphic
The book was banned for fear it would prevent men fighting in war. It took place during the first WW. Before DNA could identify bodies and modern medicine. These men were sent through meat grinders of trenches, artillery, and mechanized war. Tons of munitions are unearthed every spring by Europes farmers from that war over 100 years ago
Fkn A
When Metallica wanted to use Johnny Get Your Gun for the video, they purchased the rights to the movie so that they wouldn't have to pay royalties every time the video aired.
This song has probably the most well known transition/break in any metal song ever recorded. Even people who weren't fans got behind that ending run.
That ending was mind blowing
Korns freak on a leashe
I think this is the greatest song I have ever heard. After hearing it for 35 years it still blows my mind.
And “i can not live, i cannot die
For the longest time I thought he was saying 'hold my breath inside, wish for death' same meaning, but didn't know what he was really saying til I read the lyrics after buying the album in the 80s'
Read the book, it is even more powerful.
@@mwfmtnman on my list!
The lyrics are actually hold my breath as I wish for death..Metallica is one of the best out there, probably one of the best live concerts I've ever seen ❤
I’m 43 and was introduced to Metallica in the mid 80’s. Seen them live in Montreal and it’s still my #1 rock metal band
Metallica at their finest , I am 66 and still headbang to them . Had the pleasure of seeing them perform live .Love to feel the loudness of their music ❤️
it started with kill Em All.....hooked 52
The detail in this song has always blown my mind. Even down to how Lars' drumming at certain points sounds like gun shots. Pure perfection.
Saw it live, also. Took my daughter as a gift for straight A grades! Incredible concert….Also love Unforgiven!
Lars Ulrich is not a master on drums. Not even close. Even Lars Ulrich wouldn't say Lars Ulrich is a master on drums.
And some of us would rather stick q tips through our ears and into our brains than ever have to endure rap....
@@Buleril1 mind you .... masters don't go blabbing about being masters.
When ever people say metal is just screaming an noise, I always tell them to listen to this song, and pay attention to the lyrics, it’s such a powerful song and with huge meaning.
Death metal and the like gives metal a bad name. How many people ignore metal as a genre because " its just noise" :(
people ignore the lyrics a lot who don’t like the genre.

This is my favorite too- as dark as it is, it is absolute ART. It’s so bitterly beautiful.
Written by KIDS almost (early 20s)
It's surprising how many of the loud, grinding metal songs, that are so dark, can have a very strong "anti-war" message. From Ozzy's "Crazy Train" to Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" and Metallica's "One"
War pigs, BYOB, fortunate son. Lots of anti-war sentiment.
One reason I’m so anti war is because of the music I grew up on.

Amazing music all of them are so talented
This is a hard song, but it is the reality of war. Sometimes preserving life at all costs is not the best decision. Quality of life has to play into this as well. That is a big part of this song. This is one of the few heavy metal songs that made me cry.

My friend Dave drove me to the local record store at the time so that we could purchase this record. It was actually 2 records, I at first couldn't understand how they had only 9 songs but needed two records to fit them. The video is so much more impactful if you're already familiar with the song and the lyrics. Then you can appreciate both. The video can be overwhelming if it's your first exposure to ONE.
The video is legitimately horrible. It's completely redundant because it just reiterates the lyrics and only serves to distract from the actual song.

Metallica released a VHS way back the day called "Two of One" where the band presents the song and video with full commentary of the inspiration for this song. We watched it so many times! Here at 50 and no longer a "metalhead" but I still listen to this one often enough. A masterpiece yes!

I love the line the priest has, "He's the product of your profession, not mine."
Another song that covers what Veterans feel like when coming back from war is Five Finger Death Punch's "Wrong Side of Heaven".

Also Moscow 1991 will be mindblowing too
YES! That concert is fucking incredible. I had just discovered Metallica in 2009 and watched that show. It left me in complete awe.
I've always loved this song but never knew the meaning behind it until watching your reaction. Thanks for making these reaction videos, I love them!
The part that amazed me is they sounded just as good in concert
Metallica's James Hetfield reveals another layer of personal meaning to the lyrics for One. Must watch. Btw, SO cool watching you blown away by this for the first time.
It's good to see people broaden their horizons.. especially music they're not used to.. reading lyrics opens our eyes and hearts, Thanks for sharing this Masterpiece with others who may have never known it existed my brother!

Heck yeah. Those are all among Metallica's best in my book. I would also add The Frayed Ends of Sanity.
One of the best songs ever. To those who gave all and to those who have given so much. Much love. Semper Fi
A masterpiece. I believe it got “best guitar solo ever”… back in the 90’s. I still get chills the instant I hear the gunfire intro. No matter what I’m doing, this song stops me in my tracks.
The book it’s based on, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, is also excellent. I read it in high school when this song came out, and it changed me.
I have always loved this song, my daughter when she was a teen taught herself the guitar and this song for me, thank you boo for that memory.
I always said Sanitarium was about One flew over the cuckoo’s nest, it’s obvious
This song is a blast at a show live.

The drugs I seek and take make me at least in that moment numb my reality. And I'm not using it as a crutch. I see the damage it is causing to my family, my marriage, and even my work. I need help. Deep down, I am fearful because I don't know what else I can do to lean on his memory. I am a hot mess. My family doesn't trust me anymore.. really I was just looking for something to make me not hurt... And I can see myself spiraling. I'm watching bridges burn as I stand on them. How about you?
I love seeing your reaction to these songs. I have been listening to Metallica forever and I love to see someone "get" just how talented these guys are and that metal is not just noise! It's beautiful, deep, and thought provoking. Thank you for being open minded & appreciative of true talent!! ❤️
He is not a vegetable he is fully conscious, awake and as aware of his environment as possible with only the sense of touch /pressure
