I'm so glad that you included the footage of your emotions. This is EXACTLY WHY Metallica wrote this song. I've listened to this since it was released in 1988 (I had just turned 13) and have watched dozens of reactions to it. You hit it dead on.
I was 17 when One came out in 1988, and being a huge Metallica fan I loved it. I thought the video was cool, but it really didn't have any effect on me. I'm 51 now, and every time I see it I am in floods of tears with the recognition of how incredibly powerful it is. Thank you so much for sharing your feelings so openly.
It’s amazing how you can leave with a different impact after revisiting something from your youth. I remember growing up listening to this song and many others as a child and simply not grasping the sheer magnitude of their meanings until much later and now listening to some of them can bring me to tears.
Huge props for posting a video showing vulnerability. Can we just celebrate how amazing music is. The emotion it can provoke with a mere 'collection of sounds' is incredible
I first read "Johnny got his gun" in junior high school. Didn't know it was ever a movie until this video came out. The book broke my heart and influenced me deeply. Still haven't had the courage to watch the movie. Metallica used it masterfully and made a very emotional statement.
Thank you for that heartfelt viewing. After Serving 22 years in the military and being deployed several times to foreign countries wondering if this trip, this month, this day will be the one that the grim reaper visits. Seeing your brothers in arms injured or maimed even killed it burn deep to the core every emotional response imaginable. Please continue with your reactions whether or not you do not seem it right. Please continue. Btw Five Finger Death punch has several videos covering the same sacrifices of our troops.
I'm so glad you kept this in, you've never shied away from being honest and genuine about what the music does to you, which I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you, and I'm honoured you let yourself be so vulnerable with us, this is a REAL reaction to something so powerful, you have a great heart. Thank you Ken, really.
Hi Ken. Thank you for going through the deep valley of emotions this song can force you down, and making this video. It's comforting to see someone else experiencing some of the same feelings. Hope it doesn't ruin your weekend but make you appreciate it more, like it did me. Best wishes from Norway ;)
I believe this is the most moving song I've ever heard in my life. When this came out i was blindsided and beside myself. God bless & God speed to all our patriots who have given all.
This was the first song that ever made me cry, dunno how old I was, maybe like 13-14. I had heard it before but I borrowed the CD and read the lyrics while listening for the first time. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I think that experience made me a more empathic human, it triggered some growth in a young man for sure.
Ken, this was one of the best reactions I have seen you do. Thanks for not editing out the pain and realization you went through. This piece proves once again that there are some "metal" bands out there that can create real works of art with genuine meaning.
Mad props for sharing a more vulnerable side.really glad you included the tough stuff because I am sure it was hard. It is feelings that many have had. Thanks Ken
I feel you when you said "that could be me". I tried to enlist in the Marines in 2011, all of my cousins and uncles were in the military. I was denied because i had 3rd degree burns on my hand as a kid. My cousin had ptsd and a wrecked shoulder, the other was a medic during operation freedom in iraq treating iraqi kids blown up by landmines, the medic truck in front of him hit a landmine. When i looked back i am so glad i was denied but that career path can serve greatly. We should be treating all veterans and making damn sure war is not an option.
I only had the album version of it when I was younger, so distracted by the playing it wasn't until seeing the video I realised what was being sung . It hits VERY different as an adult.
Glad you decided to show the video. Showing emotion to great music is nothing to worry about. Music should make you feel something. I was in the Marines for 10 years. And this song always made me think about what if this happens to my men or myself. There’s definitely fates worse then death. and some of us have had to see it. Live it. Or inflict it. Im glad I found your channel. Always nice seeing people who can relate to music. And feel the words.
I love how you stop and really open up about the power of this song, juuuuussst before Kirk Hammets solo that takes it to the moon. This is a great reaction video, thank you.
Two things: this is the best non-orchestral song ever written, in my humble opinion. And this is a rare case where the video absolutely dwarfs the audio-only version. It is emotional, raw, poetic, historical, and powerful. My #1 “modern” song. Love the reaction.
"Really powerful peace of storytelling" is spot on Ken. I didn't understand this song fully at first but I do now and it also drove me to tears... absolutely no shame in that.
As an 18yr old seeing this on MTV I simply heard the music and I became a Metallica (and Metal) fan..... As I grew in years and life experience the tears flooded from me too 😞
I AM SO WITH YOU! POWERFUL MASTERPIECE!! 30 Years after I heard and saw the video. I was so distracted with other metal bands but then all of sudden saw this whole video. The academics of this song, A definitely piece of art.... and I am speechelsss. Why didnt't I see this video before for what is what. DUDE! I with you!! PEARL FROM HEAVEN!
Most heartfelt reaction I have seen you do yet. Your reaction to Chris Cornell's cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a close second. Love your work and your honesty. There will only ever be one Ken Lavigne.
Great song to re-visit and react with Ken. I hope you get a chance to react and comment on Baby Metal's new single "Metal Kingdom". Su-metal's vocals seem to me, very much improved range and I'm looking forward to what a vocal coach/teacher thinks.
It's like the vocals are the desperate pleas, the drum and bass the fast beating hard as breath is held & the guitars the endless pain. He is fully awake but he has no face.
Thank you for your honesty with your comments and for deciding to share them publicly for the world to see. It takes a lot to do that. Very moving song. Obviously it's not nice to see someone in distress but the fact this music and its messages quite clearly affected you shows how much you care about the medium, and about humanity ❤️
Great reaction and share Ken... it's such an emotional song on its own, but paired with the video it is hard not to get emotional, especially with all that is going on in the world today and the reminder of those we've lost in so many prior conflicts... this is what brilliant music can do and why it drives me crazy when people try to minimize the impact and value of music... I saw this tour (Queensryche was the opener) and i remember walking out of the venue just drained...
There's something about this song/video combination that brings tears to my eyes every time. It's unbelievably harrowing and real, particularly the "kill me" part always gets me. My favourite music video ever, nothing moves me the same way. Absolutely genius and powerful.
This song and it’s music video are a great encapsulation of what metal does best: take a very uncomfortable emotion turn it up to 11, and force you to confront it and start to contend with your feelings about it. It’s a masterpiece.
You are quite brave for leaving the footage in sir. Life stinks.... sometimes it just takes people longer to realize it. I do my best every day and God knows it. good for you Ken... hello from Cody Wyoming by the way. Metallica is my third favorite band behind Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
Thank you for putting this video out. This is indeed how many of us felt growing up, and if we were lucky enough we get this perspective before our lives were thrown away. My brother and I, and many of our friends, joined the military straight out of school, and I can tell you most of us have a very different perspective on things after seeing that side of it.
The footage is from one movie only, Johnny Got His Gun, but the film distinguishes between Johnny’s reality and fantasy with black-and-white for the hospital, and color for his dreams and memories. It is a very good movie! Thank you for the video!
Oh bless your cotton socks, your emotional response blew me away. It’s a great song and storyline. I am a nurse and this song keeps me humble and motivated to understand my patients journey. I have cheered, fought, prayed, advocated, and cried my heart out.
Thanks for putting out this video. This song has a special place for me. In 1994, I was a sophomore in highschool. I was in a horrific car accident. I got hit in the head very hard. I had a traumatic brain injury. While in the hospital, after I was all patched up. I was out of it. So much so that I vaguely remember anything at all about even being in the hospital. Except one thing. In my room, before I came to. I assume my brother or my mom knew I liked MTV. Someone had turned it on the TV in my room. That song came on, I don't know when, but it must have been before I came to. I just remember hearing it. I couldn't open my eyes, but I could heard that song. I wasn't necessarily a Metallica fan at the time but it was like that song melted into my head. Like somehow it was the perfect description of what I was experiencing at the time. After that, I became quite the Metallica fan. Weird how things work out sometimes. Thank you!!
The song and video are based on the 1971 Movie starring Jason Robards as the soldier's dad. The move is an adaptation of Dalton Tumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" (1938). Trumbo wrote the adaptation and directed the movie. I got my hands on a copy back in 88/89 when this video came out. Read it in like 6 hours. Amazing book. Dark, for sure; but well worth the read. It's on Amazon for like $8.99. Great reaction. Thank you for not editing out the emotional bits. Authenticity is appreciated.
There's not a lot that gets to me but.... The older I get music can bring it out of me. I watch all the reaction videos to this song because I remember how mind blowing this video / song is. I love the genuine reactions to this perfect song / video. I wish I could go back and watch this for the first time all over again. The keep the home fires burning song at the end to me is the creepiest part. It also shows how insane and senseless war as a whole is too. I'm rambling. Awesome video
There's something that pops up on my social media from time to time, it says that metal music is classical with updated instruments, or something along those lines. I love classical and metal, makes sense to me😁😁😁😚 Loved this reaction
The song, the video, and everything about it is a total masterpiece. I can never get through it without crying no matter how many times I watch it. The part that really gets me in the video is that this poor guy can only communicate through morse code by moving his head. Gets me right in the gut. My dad was in WW2 and was in active duty in the Philippines. He and his best friend were running for a trench to jump in, but before they could reach a safe place a grenade came flying their way and killed his best friend. My dad suffered from shrapnel but lived. He had survivors guilt, and always told me that he wished it would have been him. Thank you for deciding to put this on here..
My grandfather always instilled in me two things. 1. "If you want to take a life, start with yourself." and the second was: " There's no hole you've dug that you can't dig your own way out. You are the man with the shovel at the bottom." He was in two world wars and was a participant in the second (and third in some circles, ((continuity war)) But he never held any hatred in his heart. Those two things have gotten me so far. Even he said " You've gone trough more than a man could bare. But you made it."
Thank you for sharing this Ken, no shame or anything in crying with this, you're human and you feel. I'm ex-military, joined up after 9/11 and prior to that I didn't even consider danger, I had never heard One until about 6 months into my training when a friend introduced me. I saw the video not long after and what you describe here describes what quickly happened to me - the realisation of our mortality. To this day I get the goosebumps, the hairs stand up on back of my neck and I get a lump in my throat with this song. You're not alone in this one, alot of us feel this and it's good that we do.
Thank you for letting it impact you so profoundly. It gave me the opportunity to explore my own emotions and the impact that the song had on me. Well played.
Thank you for leaving the heartfelt honest emotions in the reaction. I too felt those pains, for I have actually been through a multi-month damaged body and coma but was partially aware and dreaming but they assumed I was out. It's quite the harrowing experience indeed, and I'm really happy that people like you have empathy to understand what we went through. My friend died right next to me, and although we were both victims in the car accident, I still have survivor's guilt, but his neck was broken so thank God my neck was still intact, though many other parts weren't. Anyway, thank you again for the heartfelt reaction. It's nice to know that someone else opens up and feels for the worlds of both physical and emotional pain that such an excruciating situation can invoke. God bless you Kevin.
Thank you so very much for leaving in your raw emotional reaction. It was so powerful and matched the song and clip. I was on the emotional ride right there with you. thank you.

A powerful song that always brings me close to tears every time I hear it along with ffdp's song wrong side of heaven.
SAME 🥺
When we were just kids, this was just a song. All grown up we learn, its not just a song.
Congratulations my dear, you're a human being, if you don't feel anything with this song, you can't be helped
Greatest reaction. Glad you posted this Ken.
Thank you, my friend. Glad I'm not alone.
Lot deeper then I was expecting man. Great reaction. That song is so powerful.
When i was a teenager i could watch this wideoclip alright. Being in my late 30's i just cannot do this without crying. Yeah, i just feel it more...
Now I’m crying. Amazing song. It’ll do that to you. You have empathy. Don’t worry, a lot of us do.
Ken, this was one of the best reactions I have seen you do. Thanks for not editing out the pain and realization you went through. This piece proves once again that there are some "metal" bands out there that can create real works of art with genuine meaning.
'Its so clean. The bass hasn't even entered yet.'
The whole album in two sentences 😂
Mad props for sharing a more vulnerable side.really glad you included the tough stuff because I am sure it was hard. It is feelings that many have had.
Thanks Ken
I'm with you brother..it puts me intears too!
“The bass hasn’t even entered yet”
It enters directly in the next album Sir
I feel you when you said "that could be me". I tried to enlist in the Marines in 2011, all of my cousins and uncles were in the military. I was denied because i had 3rd degree burns on my hand as a kid. My cousin had ptsd and a wrecked shoulder, the other was a medic during operation freedom in iraq treating iraqi kids blown up by landmines, the medic truck in front of him hit a landmine. When i looked back i am so glad i was denied but that career path can serve greatly. We should be treating all veterans and making damn sure war is not an option.
Respect through the roof. Keep being a genuine human, Ken
Truly, one of the greatest songs ever made, by anyone. Timeless classic for all...
I only had the album version of it when I was younger, so distracted by the playing it wasn't until seeing the video I realised what was being sung . It hits VERY different as an adult.
Good for you reacting to it as a vet
Big Heart love you Man! Thanks for that React
Listen, friend... AMAZING reaction , mein Herr! This song gets to me as well...
I would love you to do a deep dive on the lyrics of DISPOSABLE HEROES. Another amazing anti war piece
Love you
I’m late to the party, just saw this reaction video for the first time. Thank you for sharing this. Greatly appreciate it.
And yet when you hear the version with the orchestra included it adds so much to it
Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, still fight back tears
Thank you for not sugarcoating your reaction, sharing the raw human emotion this piece evokes. Anyone with a working heart feels it with you.
"Really powerful peace of storytelling" is spot on Ken. I didn't understand this song fully at first but I do now and it also drove me to tears... absolutely no shame in that.
As an 18yr old seeing this on MTV I simply heard the music and I became a Metallica (and Metal) fan.....
As I grew in years and life experience the tears flooded from me too 😞
The soldier did get his wish granted. The nurse pulled the plug and his family honored him.
Thank you for sharing your reaction. This song is one I seldom revisit, its just so strong
Most heartfelt reaction I have seen you do yet. Your reaction to Chris Cornell's cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a close second. Love your work and your honesty. There will only ever be one Ken Lavigne.
"The bass hasn't even entered yet." Welcome to And Justice For All.....
😅😅
So much energy, so much feelings.. this song is one of the most pure expressions of what Metal is.
That was the Best reaction video I’ve ever seen!! Thank You for being real.
What a beautiful and powerfully honest reaction. Much love Ken.
I love classical and metal, makes sense to me😁😁😁😚
Loved this reaction
It's a brilliant depiction of the aftermath of war. I have frineds that feel this same way and they still have their appendages.
I’ve got a little teary nearly every time I’ve watched this over the last 30 yrs .. touching stuff
Best reaction ever..
this video and song makes us all that means it’s doing it’s job. Take care 😘🏴
Love your channel Ken. I don't think I've clicked on a vid faster in my life.
Wow, thanks!
My pleasure. ❤️ from Australia.
This comes to heart now being a military life and chronic illness. The kill me kill me part broke me😢😢😢
I'm almost certain anyone with enough life experience cries the first time they hear this song. Absolutely nothing to be ashamed about.
I subbed to you because this was the realist reaction to this song I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this.
Still goose Bumps after 30 years and 100000x times i heard ONE🤘
You're not alone in this one, alot of us feel this and it's good that we do.
i like that you need so much time to find the right words. a break can say more than thousand words.
I was on the emotional ride right there with you. thank you.
Thank you for releasing this heart felt reaction‘I’m watching this on Poppy Day New Zealand, respect to all fallen soldiers and the ones who return, thank you ❤
I was about 10 or 11 when this came out and they played it on the weekly music show on TV, it really had a major impact on me, musically and emotionally
