    The song was based off of a Novel/movie called Johnny got his gun. It's about a soldier that was hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. Left In hospital, with basically a fate worse than death. He lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He's fully conscious but unable to communicate, and unable to tell the difference between a dream and the waking world.

      They wrote the song based off of the book. When they decided to make a music video (their first) they then found out there was a movie based off the book so they decided to used clips from the movie. They were going to pay on a per clip basis then found it was cheaper to buy rights to the entire film.

    Let’s go Rob!!! There’s 2 guitarists in Metallica- James hetfield and Kirk Hammett. James is the rhythm guitarist and Kirk is the lead guitarist meaning Kirk played the cool guitar solo near the end (as for the rest of the guitar it’s a mixture of them both im not sure whose part is whose though). James hetfield is also the singer. Lars Ulrich is the drummer. During this time their bassist was Jason Newsted although interestingly I believe they muted his bass on every song of this album. So I don’t think this song has any bass although it was originally supposed to.

    • @FyreofShadow
      @FyreofShadow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      IIRC, the bass tracks weren't muted entirely, but it was decreased to a level where you essentially couldn't hear it over the guitars. You might be able to catch a few weird noises in Dyers' Eve and Shortest Straw that are actually the bass, if you're paying attention!

      The bass on this album is basically just matching the rhythm guitars. Nothing especially crazy, to be honest. I never minded the mix, personally. The multi-tracked guitars just carry so much weight to me.
      Newstead is a damn good bassist, though fr. He's the architect of a ton of great bass lines for Metallica.

      The mix is divisive, but it changed music at the time and I love the sound of the album. If anyone really wants the truth, however, go listen to “…and Justice for Jason”. He played his ads off on the album and Lars buried it.

    Thanks for the energy. This was a pleasure to share.
    i would advice the following non so mainstream songs if you liked the zic +lyrics +originality +mood combo on these two previous:
    _coma by guns and roses (i feel it every time)
    _the "qwerty" musical by murshroomhead ( quite wtf and wich made me want to discover them more )

    9:55 this is my standard for art since like 1996. I knew the song word 4 word, note 4 note, beat 4 beat for a few years before I saw the video. Its a true masterpiece

    Haha I love how generally accurate your impressions of instruments and singing are during the pauses sometimes. As a musician, I enjoy hearing what you recall melodically/structurally on a first pass of a song. Also, distinguishing bass from guitar def took me some effort at first. Even harder for stuff like Rage where the bass often uses guitar effects and plays synchronized parts with Tom. It’s even more challenging when you hear what sounds like guitar, but the guitar is actually playing a siren noise in the background or some shit 😂

    I have seen reactions where the reactors didn't watch the video and only listened to the audio which is a huge mistake for the first time because the clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" add a whole new depth to the message.
