    I started watching your channel late 2022, and after binging on older videos, I just wanted you to hear a compliment about how far you've come, not just in your job as a sheep farmer, but also as a videographer! I noticed things you've learned and implemented to be a better farmer like using a heating pad and dextrose to save cold or small lambs, using thicker tubes to cast legs, using gloves when checking your ladies. Even your camera angles, editing and adding words to the screen has gotten SO MUCH BETTER!
    You have a lot to be proud of! ❤️

    Very interesting to see your set up. Here in Scotland we do very similar procedures, The main differences being all lamb navels are iodine dipped to prevent joint ill and all lambs receive 1ml of a drug called Spectam which prevents watery mouth a condition common to housed lambs. Triples are recorded and wet fostered to singles. Down ewes are given 60ml sub-cute calcium along with Ceto for twin lamb.milk fever. Wonky joint lambs receive 1ml of vit E to encourage stronger muscles in response to stimuli from movement. I lamb 30 sponged pedigree ewes and typically visit them every two hours from the last time I walked out the shed. Lambing time is the golden time of the year for me. I trust you'll have a wonderful season.

    Hi Sandi, that little black and white lamb is so cute. Uncle has sheep also, we see that leg problem a lot. We call it 'wobble legs'. You don't know me from spit, but may I make a suggestion for treating it? We use a figure 8,wrapped 3times from one shoulder to the other across the back, then wrap down the leg with splints back up then a figure 8 under the chest also 3times with a spreader between the legs and chest. Down the other with splints, up and wrap to the top and end the wrap behind the neck. Think of the way that wrap for a human with dislocated shoulder. Same idea.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Love to see a picture of this! Would love to try!!

    • @FeatheredLife
      @FeatheredLife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@SandiBrock hi Sandi I don't have a picture. I wish I did. I can ask if uncle has one, but if you look at human pictures of dislocated shoulder splints it might help. You do primary wrap before the splints, correct? That is when you do over the shoulder figure 8, 3times around ending at the neck area. Splints, wrap with spreader tube right under breast bone, the bottom figure 8 holds tube in place. 3 times under the chest area. You don't want too tight or too loose. The lamb should be able to get up and down without friction from vet wrap or spreader tube. It's a two person job until you get use to doing it. Hope this helps.

    What a great knowledge base for anyone who is thinking about starting out in sheep. The unvarnished truth, lambs will die, occasionally a ewe. You can feel like you got kicked in the guts one minute, the next have a pair of cracking lambs and be smiling. I have a small flock and lambing once a year is enough for me, so well done and keep making the vlogs

    hey .
    you make a very nice video of the lambing time .
    i am a cow farmer in North West Germany nearly from the city Emden .
    other times .we milked 95 dairy cows in a playpen barn .
    we stopped dairy farming since two an half years .because in 2016 was the basic milk price for 7 months only 18 Euro cents !!!
    we change our sales into natural programms for the pasture which financed from the state and europian union .
    we have 80 suckler cows on 240 acres pasture .
    the cows are 6-7 months at pasture an winter times in the barns.
    it is lot of work .with lambs i see it in your video and it is a lot of work with new born calfs especially by the heifers .
    nice greatings and good luck for the next time to you from Bert from North West Germany !!!

    Hi Sandi,
    Recently found your channel :) Love your setup. Just wanted to pass along a tip (you probably already know). I use Arbico Organics fly predators in the barn and compost piles. I thought these were just another gimmick until I tried their free sample. I'm totally sold on these predators and will never go through another season without them. No more fly sprays, no more fly traps, no more sticky tape wohoo. Thank you for these vlogs. Keep up the great work.

    • @vondacourtney1786

      That's not right what TH-cam is doing. Why have they singled her out? There are other channels on TH-cam that actually show alpacas, goats giving birth. The whole actual process. So why are they harassing this woman? Definitely a hard worker. Loves what she does. We all need to find out why TH-cam has singled her out. They let other channels do whatever they want and show torturing monkeys is a big one I don't condone but TH-cam let's all that go on. I am going to find out why they have singled this woman out. She does not deserve to be treated like this from TH-cam. I'm sorry they are doing this to you.
      I'm sorry you lost so many babies. How did your sheep get this clamedia? I know I didn't spell it right but do all of them have it?

    For all the trolls and nick pickers who get bent out of shape because they think you help your ewes too much I say that they are full of it. Just watching how the ewes seek you out when they are struggling or come over for comfort after you have helped save their lambs is proof that you are doing what is right for your ewes. It is the same in each lambing season. You have been letting more and more ewes do their thing and only help when it’s clear they need it. I actually think it’s pretty awesome how various ewes actually come over to ask for help and others then want to show off their babies and show what a great job they did. They know that you care about them and it makes a huge difference no matter what species they are.💚🐑🐏👍🏻

      Don’t laugh but you can diaper (size 4 to 6 with a “tail hole” cut into it) the special ones like B & W ewe lamb and bring them into the house where u hv the time to bottle feed every 2 hrs and stand it up on a carpeted surface (better traction). Also a sling or jolly jumper helps to hold them upright and strengthen the legs. After a couple days u should see a big improvement. A little more work but what’s a few days inside worth compared to the value of the lamb in the long run. This is my experience. Maybe not for everyone but it works lol

    I have said before people have no clue what it takes to get the food we consume to the market .
    Also, it's important to show not every animal survives. It's part of life, you do what you can but sometimes it's not meant to be.

      My first daughter, when my waters broke they were horrible coloured because my daughter had pood, so I was induced straight away and doctors on hand because of all the risks it can have on your unborn baby. Luckily my daughter was fine, but it's always considered high risk when there is maconiam in the waters because of the risk it has on bub. So I was wondering if it was the same for lambs or really any animal in general

    I know this is a few months late (I just found your channel recently & currently binging on them 😁) but the lamb leg splaying issue resembles swimmer syndrome in puppies. There is a hobble method that can be used that prevents the legs from splaying outwards & remedies the problem. I know lambs aren't puppies, but it seems like a logical solution to a similar birth defect.

    Yeah @24:09 if a lamb has a bent limb like that and it keeps putting weight on the end of that limb, it does 2 things: rips open the skin and infection and causes nerve damage and only surgery/splinting fixes it. Split a little past the suspected bend.

    On your retained placenta, have you ever infused them with Benodine? We did that with out Dairy cows that retained their placentas. Just squirt in some in a quart container containing water until the water is light brown. Then us a sheath gently guided in the vagina and push some Benodine solution in with a syringe. We haven’t had a retained placenta yet, but we will definitely do this if we have one.

      After more thought on the subject, I wasn’t thinking...cows and sheep have entirely different cervix’s. On cows, we insert a pipette through the cervix then into the uterus to dispense the Benedine solution. Unless a person can get through the sheep cervix, it won’t get where the infection is...

    Good idea to separate ewes when beginning lambing, if possible preventing stealing. Must be difficult not becoming so attached to all lambs, as you are raising them for meat. I would want to keep them all! 💓

    Hello Sandi like your videos. We had that when ewes would abort early or just have there lambs to early and just wasn’t stronge enough to live. It was very depressing to go down to the barn and see that every day. We ended up feeding 4gr aureomyicin and it took care of all the problems. But I can’t get it in the states now unless my vet gets it for me. Damn government

    Easy as when the sheep are inside. We had 45,000 ewes lambing outside, in rain, snow and sunshine. They lamb themselves unless we spot one having difficulties. Estimate around 60,000 lambs.

    Hey....not sure if it'd work for sheep, but it might be worth looking into in the case that it could help, but Angelica root tincture helps to expel sticky/retained placenta in humans, so I don't see why it wouldn't in sheep....also, shepherd's purse helps stop bleeding after birth in humans.

    Could you have performed a manual removal of the placenta when you first realised she had not passed it. I’m a human midwife and work birth suite and here I am watching sheep give birth.
    Nipple confusion ☑️
    Retained Placentas☑️
    Meconium liquor ☑️
    Stealing newborns ✖️ but I did laugh at the mumma sheep steeling babies and you telling her off. Then you go steel a baby from the maternal death and give it the the mum of the stillborn. Mother Nature at its best with the little lamb and mumma both excepting each other. Gotta love the pregnancy hormones.
    Thankyou for your beautiful videos

      So many things in common, I'm sure!! I was told very early in my sheep career to never pull the placenta from a sheep... I'll have to ask my vet again why that was!

    • @RoyalBlue4486
      @RoyalBlue4486 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sandi Brock pulling can cause hemorrhage, I’ve pulled only once I think, from a ewe that aborted and her placenta started to get rotten. Didn’t have an oxytocin shot, so I gently pulled and gave an antibiotic. She made it with no other problems. But typically, no pulling is not recommended.
